Proto:Frogger (1997)/PC Alpha

This is a sub-page of Proto:Frogger (1997).

This disc seems to be the "Windows 95 Alpha" build. This is evidenced due to an internal document dated June 27th, 1997, which says the Windows 95 alpha is due on June 30th, and that it's on pace to be completed on time. The game files here (MWD) show that the build is dated June 29th, and the CD image has an Application ID set to "ALPHA".

The disc which this was found on is described as blank.

Compatibility

  • Must be run with Windows 95 / Windows 98 compatibilty.
  • Works on Windows XP VM in VMWare. (The installer fails to install DirectX, but if it's installed from the retail game you can just double click Frogger.exe on the disc.)
  • Runs on Windows 11 when dgVoodoo is used.
  • Should be installed.
  • Music may not work due to the audio issues present even in the final version.

Notes

  • Seems fairly crash prone. Sometimes it crashes on game over.
  • The installer uses a Frogger logo only before seen on internal documents.
  • Internal Documents say that the Windows 95 alpha build was going to be sent to the states at the same time as the build sent to Hasbro.
  • Froglets have their throats always visible.
  • Frogger's eyes don't load their texture.
  • It's possible to croak during demo playback.
  • Pressing space on main menu is equivalent to triangle.
  • Frogger's sounds?
  • This is the first build with the final music.
  • Cannot figure out how to pause, perhaps it can't be done.
  • Multiplayer crashes upon level selection.

Controls

  • Arrow Keys: Hop
  • Right Shift: Croak
  • Enter: Super Hop, Menu Select
  • LAlT: Cheat Key:
  • LALT + T: Timer Toggle
  • LALT + C: Enemy Collision Toggle
  • LALT + L: Infinite Lives
  • RControl: Tongue
  • Semicolon/Apostrophe: Rotate Camera
  • Escape: Exit

Cheats do not have an indication of them becoming active.

Levels

  • CAV1, CAV5 crash.
  • CAV3 has sliding physics, but is hard to see. Haven't seen this level before.
  • Pressing LALT is the cheat key.

SUB2

  • Peli's Island has been replaced with early Bow Wow Falls, but is still called Peli's Island.
  • There's a fence around the center area.
  • The level is just comprised of untextured flat colored parts beyond the starting area.
  • The trees use the bush texture.
  • There are flying turtles in the place of what are balloons & birds in the final.

SWP1

  • Starts you at the end of the level.

SWP2

  • Crashes

SWP3

  • Second Bang Bang Barrel
  • Clearly is for testing because it has a crusher and boxes just randomy lying around.

SWP4

  • First seen of Slime Sliding
  • Waterfall at end is yellowish, and you can walk on it.
  • Blue water, isn't actually marked as water?

SWP5

  • Start on lower level.
  • Possible to reach the upper level by spamming super hop up the slope.
  • The lower crusher area is accessible.

SKY1

  • Loony Balloons (Similar to other build, but with transparent textures)

SKY2

  • Airshow Antics (Hard to see)

SKY3

  • Airshow Antics Multiplayer

FOR1

  • Doesn't crash.
  • Water bank is now textured.
  • Yes, it's actually a hedgehog.
  • The outer ring has trees.
  • Bees show the wrong graphic.
  • Bees work properly, and stop if there's a treestump blocking them.
  • Beehives show wrong texture.

VOL1

  • No longer uses gruesome graphics pack. Looks a lot more like final.
  • Has platforms now, but the switches don't work.

DES1

  • Blue Lizards (Which make weird noises)
  • Beating this level starts DES3.

DES2

  • Boulder Alley
  • Yellow Frog is up on top of the pillar in the upper middle part of the level.

DES3

  • Inaccessible on level stack. (Can be played by beating DES1)
  • Tumbling Valley (First time we've seen it)
  • Barely textured
  • Beetles at the end instead of boulders.
  • No DES_CRACK yet.
  • Orange Frog cannot be reached.

DES4

  • DES1 but starting at the end with some weird terrain.

DES5

  • The water looks weird.
  • Croc heads were added.

CAV1

  • Crashes

CAV3

  • Unknown map with sliding. Early Frogger Goes Skiing?

CAV4

  • Webs Cavern
  • The firefly camera bugs exist, and when eaten cause the camera to go away.
  • The gold frog area has spiders.
  • Due to superhop not letting you choose direction, you can't reach the high areas.
  • There's a max brightness fly in the gold frog area.
  • Weird camera angles.

FrogLord

  • First build to include multiplayer map files.
  • They're all copies of singleplayer maps.
  • FORM is an even earlier version of Honey Bee Hollow.
  • CAVM is the map we saw as CAV1 in the 6/19 build.
  • Need to look over all levels.

TODO

  • Look for debugging features.
  • FrogLord support
  • Screenshots
  • Disc scan.
