Proto:Gran Turismo 2/Demo Discs/Cars
This is a sub-page of Proto:Gran Turismo 2/Demo Discs.
This page documents cars that are present in the various demos of Gran Turismo 2, ranging from those that had just some minor (such as color) changes to being completely removed from the game. See also the notes page for the whole car list in the demo builds.
Each demo disc build contains the following number of car files (a set of object and textures files for day and night tracks each, consisting of four files per car) in the carobj folder:
- July build: 419
- August (US) build: 1049
- Euro Demo builds: 1063
- Test Drive demo: 1071
Removed Cars
To do: Document the following cars:
|
A number of car models and texture sets were removed by the time the game was released in Japan. The "early version" cars are duplicates of other cars in the demo but with unique models, textures, and different references and codes (see roster below).
As well as cars, a non-car model (internally named t000n) exists in addition to the arcade loading background that is still in the final; it is possible it was an earlier version of it. It revolves much faster than any cars.
Car Differences
Apart from being removed, some cars had design and/or texturing changes before release. Cars whose changes amounted to different wheel images are not included below, as that would be nearly all cars.
To do: There are several other cars that has differences, all of them are documented in this video |
Demo | Final | Notes |
---|---|---|
Originally the Mazdaspeed AZ-1 A-Spec had the same color scheme as the Mazda AZ-1 '91. | ||
The ill-fitting wheels on the Mazda Familia/Protegé/323 GT-X were fixed. This also happens on some other cars in the demo builds, because they used hexagonal style wheel textures as used in the first game (GT2 uses circular wheel textures instead). Originally the car had a yellow color instead of the blue one. | ||
The Lister Storm had more color choices in the demos. | ||
Just a few color options were available in the earliest version of the Mini Cooper 1.3i. | ||
The Citroen Xantia got two more colors (red and brown) in the demos. | ||
A purple color was present in the demo version of the Citroen Xsara, but three others (black, red and gold) weren't added until the final version of the game. | ||
In the Test Drive disc the Citroen Xsara Rally Car had an extra red color scheme. It was removed in the final version probably because it is too similar to the Kit Car F2 version. A red color option would eventually appear in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, but the black color option was removed from that game. (Even then, the Xsara Rally Car still lacked the white roof the real car/GT3 version had). Additionally, the rear wing was strangely moved to the roof. | ||
The Renault Clio 16V got just a few colors in the demos. | ||
A light gold color was present in this early version of the Renault Laguna V6. Just a few colors were available during development. | ||
Two more green colors were present in the demo version of the Jaguar XK8 while the red and Alpine Metallic colors were still not available. | ||
Similar thing happened to the Jaguar XKR, a dark green color was present in the demo but two other colors weren't (grey and Topaz Metallic). | ||
The Jaguar XJ 3.2 Sport got 10 less colors in the demos. | ||
The Jaguar XJ220 Race Car (Without Racing Modifications) had just one color option (gray) compared to the full version where many more colors are available. | ||
The "Silverstone Insurance Services" text was removed from the front in favor of some "Jaguar" text (possibly due to licensing issues). Some occlusion errors regarding the "Jaguar" text on the back were fixed. | ||
Just two colors were available at this stage of development of the Venturi Atlantique 300. | ||
A darker logo was put on the front and sides of the Corvette 427 Stingray '69 and the grill on the underside was darkened as well. The nameplate was changing color according to the body color chosen. | ||
The Dodge Concept Car LM originally reused the Special Color variation of the original GT's Dodge Concept Car. These two color schemes returned in the final GT2, for the Concept Car's racing modification. | ||
During the development of Gran Turismo 2, the Dodge Charger got a gray color but it was later on replaced by another blue color. | ||
The Dodge Challenger lost only its "Shaker" hood scoop but two colors (gold and gray) were added. | ||
The "Stratus" script on the rear bootlid was missing on the early version's model. The player could choose 5 more colors originally. | ||
The STP Taisan Viper in this version appears as the racing modification for the Viper GTS Coupe, a.k.a. the Viper GTS-R. The STP Taisan Viper does appear alongside the GTS-R. | ||
Due to the fact Dodge possibly wanted their Viper to be based on the 1999 model (as the Viper GTS' Blue/Stone White paint job was only a color option in 1996/97), only Viper Red and Viper Black were available to choose in-game in the final version. | ||
Same as above. | ||
The Ford Cougar came with only one color in the demos. Same thing happened to the Mercury Cougar. | ||
Originally the Ford Focus 1.8i Zetec had two light blue colors but they were deleted and replaced by two purple colors in the final version. The front license plate was also black no matter what color you chose, while in the final it's body-colored. | ||
The Ford Ka had two extra dark blue colors and two extra green colors in the earliest demos. | ||
The license plates were changed to always reflect the body color, instead of being black regardless. Body plates were curves more around the wheel arches. | ||
Most colors of the early Audi A3 were much brighter. | ||
The Audi A4 2.8 quattro lost two green colors in the final version of the game. However, a dark red and a brown color were added. | ||
Trim around the bottom of the body and the license plates were recolored to that of the body as opposed to just black. Wheels were added, while the grill on the front was made into a single piece rather than multiple. | ||
The front license plate of the Mercedes C43 had AMG text added to it, while the rear of the car had AMG and C43 badges added to it. Various factory colors were removed, for unknown reasons. | ||
The demo version of this car had the white color instead of the grey one plus the dark blue color was still not present. | ||
In the demo version, the Peugeot 206 S16 had just 4 color options. | ||
Two brown colors were available to choose in the Vauxhall Astra SRi 2.0i 16V of the first demo. However, the dark red color was still not implemented. | ||
The 1998 Castrol Mugen NSX had car number 16 added to all the blank white spots on its body. Its white color scheme was removed. A similar fate happened to the 1999 version of the car. | ||
"Civic" and VTEC logos were added to the rear of this Civic. | ||
Another car that ended up getting a spoiler was the Honda Prelude SiR-T '98. | ||
The Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evo was downgraded to just the Lancia Delta HF Integrale in Arcade Mode. | ||
The Evo version of the HF Integrale had its body lowered so it sat on its wheels properly, as the "jacked up" version implies that it is unfinished. | ||
A redesign of the Lancer Evo V RS's racing modification was made, which changed it from looking like the Evo V Rally car to a green Puma livery similar to what is seen on the 3000GT racing modifications. (Both Puma-liveried Mitsubishi cars were Super Taikyu race cars.) | ||
The Lancer Evolution VI (the RS and GSR versions) had a plate proclaiming their name added to the front. | ||
The Pajero Mini '97 was another car given a major facelift. Front headlights, bars on the top and above the bumper and an extra logo on the front were all added or changed just to name a few. | ||
The Mitsubishi GTO / 3000GT VR-4 had its third brake light removed. | ||
The Falken Tires paint scheme was finished on the Mitsubishi Mirage Cyborg R '92, adding the infamous Falken green color and Falken Tire logos. (Without the Falken logos, this car is simply the same one from GT1.) | ||
The Nissan Stagea RS Four V '98 racing mod livery was refined between demo and final. Nismo logos were changed in favor for Nissan logos, a Bridgestone logo was added to the front, and the name along the side was shrunk, along with various other changes. The racing mod of the '97 version of the car was also changed accordingly. | ||
Potenza and Bridgestone logos were added to the rear window of the Stagea 260 RS '98 racing mod, while the body colored spoiler was made thinner. Also, Nismo text on the windshield was changed to the Stagea logo. Again, the '97 version of the car experienced a similar fate. | ||
The Nismo 270R had more color options in the Test Drive Disc. | ||
The early Nissan Pulsar/Almera VZ-R N1 seemed to be in an unfinished state. It had an uncolored VZ-R stylized along the side, white holes on the back where lights should be, no wheels and two identical color schemes. Two more definitive VZ-R logos are present in the textures but aren't present on the car. (The car does appear finished with fully colored VZ-R logo in later demo builds, however.) All these things were changed or removed for the final. | ||
The Nissan R390 '98 Road Car had its number plate changed in the final. Additionally, the car's internal name was changed from n240n to n24nn (n240r being the name for the race car). | ||
More Nismo text and logos were removed from the R32 Skyline '91, replaced again with Nissan text and logos. The Skyline text down the side, however, was made worse in the final. The black color scheme shows it has a blocky white outline that wasn't there in the demo. Other racing Skyline variations (R32, R33, R34, V-Spec, GT-R, etc) have similar changes. | ||
The Nissan Skyline R32 NISMO racing mod started out in the demo looking like other racing Skylines, with Nismo logos intact. By the time of release however, the paint job was completely changed with BP and Trampio logos being most prominent to the detriment of all Nismo logos. The same fate happened to the '91 and GT-R V-Spec versions of the R32 Skyline, though the generic Skyline demo paint job was traded for a Calsonic blue paint job and fancy black/pink/purple Trampio job respectively. | ||
The Daihatsu Move Aero C '98 had its license plate changed from grey to body-color, a "Move" logo was added to the rear and rendering errors on the Move logo along the side were fixed. | ||
Reminiscent of the Gran Turismo 3 Daihatsu placeholder, the outsized and detached wheels on the Subaru 360 were thankfully fixed for the release. The car, rendered on this phase, was shown on the UK PlayStation Magazine, on their article about GT2. | ||
Changes for the Subaru Impreza WRX '98 amounted to the WRX and Subaru logos on the back being made less distinctive. That and the body-colored license plate having its WRX text removed, in favor of an empty black plate. The body was also made rounder. | ||
The Impreza WRX Type R STi '96 lost a small stripe from its sides, but gained a more defined WRX on the back, and its blue color was made more lively. | ||
The livery for the racing mod of the Altezza RS200 changed significantly. Initially looking like another Castrol-sponsored cars, it transformed to a much plainer design. This design was retained for Tom's tuned version of Altezza. | ||
The Celica text on the GT-R '91's license plate was removed and turned into a logo while the wheels were made rounder and less transparent. The car wasn't completely fixed for the final, though, as the "Twin Cam 16" logo on the side flickers as the car rotates. | ||
The garnet red color in the Suzuki Kei S was removed in the final version. | ||
Originally, the Suzuki Cappuccino had many more colors. In the final, just three colors are available. | ||
Instead, the Racing Modification of the Cappuccino just had 2 color options in the Demos. | ||
A new racing mod design was called for on the Suzuki Alto Works RS/X '90. Whitewashed windscreen and wheels were fixed, the spoiler was deleted, and the heavy Advan detailing was removed in favor of a more understated solid-color-with-a-few-logos design. (The Advan variant was used in RS/Z '97 model instead; however, the alternate paint color is white/red instead of black/yellow.) |
String-Only Cars
To do: Document car filename changes? (especially for the RUF cars and efe2n being originally for Ford ESCORT RS2000) |
These cars do have a proper name but the model of the car itself lacks and uses a placeholder one instead (mostly a Toyota Altezza for road cars and a racing modified Toyota Altezza for race cars). All of these car are not present in any way in the final version of the game.

Some notes regarding these cars:
- The filenames used by the proposed racing versions of the RUF cars do not necessarily reflect the filename used by the final RUF road cars; only bub2n was used consistently as the 993-based BTR2, while bucrn went from the Turbo-R (which ended up using buthn) to the CTR2 Sport.
- The Ford ESCORT 1.8 Gti in particular is notable for having an appearance in the Ford dealership in the demos.
- The VW Beatle 1.9 (note the typo) contains parts and physics data, but the engine part will not work properly as the game's engine was not designed for engines with redline lower than 5000 rpm, as it causes problems with the power/torque calculation and automatic transmission behavior.
- The n-15r filename was previously used by the Silvia LM Edition in GT1, suggesting a possible return of the car, although the car's body never appeared.
- The scrapped JGTC Toyota cars can be found as racing modifications; a similar behavior exists with the Castrol MUGEN ACCORD (h2car), which also appears as a string-only car in the demos and retail game (the latter with a car logo, but no replay name):
- The racing modification of 1996 MR2s are based on the [R]KOSEI & Buddy club MR2 '98, albeit based on the 1997 specification.
- The TRD3000GT's racing modification is based on the [R]FET SPORTS SUPRA'98, albeit based on the 1996/1997 car.
- The [R]TSUCHIYA MR2 '98 ended up being the racing modification for the Toyota MR2 GT-S '98, having originally planned as TRD2000GT's racing modification, as described above.
- This game would have been the debut for the Pagani Zonda in the series, except it never was and instead made its official debut in the following game.
- Some of the these string-only cars do include car logos, one of which do not have a car model file nor is registered on the .carinfo file:
