Said in the final Dark Space of the game. The final combined some text to have 1 fewer text box. Commas were added, and some of the wording was changed.
South Cape
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I'm the only one who returned safely... |
Somehow, I made it back to South Cape... |

Yet another comma the prototype is missing.

Erik's dialogue is more detailed in the final.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
If you don't hurry home your mother will know that you were kept after school....Heh heh heh. |
If you don't hurry home, your mother will think that you were kept after school....Heh heh heh. |
In the prototype, their mothers will know their children were kept after school instead of think they were. Oh, and the final added yet another missing comma.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
You have a habit of jumping down from places. Well, nothing I can do about that. |
You have a habit of jumping down from places. Well, I guess I can't really stop you. |
The final has a bit more personality in this dialogue.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|

Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|

Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I understand why, he hates to see his parents fighting every day. |
I understand why. He hates to see his parents fighting every day. |
The final fixes the run-on sentence.

I put up with it for Seth's sake, but if it weren't for him, I'd have left long ago! |
An added comma, again.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|

This time, the final removed an unnecessary comma.

I envy you when I see the sea breeze blowing your hair like that... |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Not like mine, under this scarf.... |
This woman doesn't finish her last sentence in the prototype. This sentence was replaced in the final with a second text box that finishes what she was talking about, even if it is oddly worded.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
My friend Eric lives here. |
My friend Erik lives here. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
This is the biggest house in South Cape. I envy people born to rich families... |
This is the biggest house in South Cape. Will envied people born to rich families... |
For whatever reason, the final changes the second text box from first person, present tense to third person, past tense.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
It's the little things in life that make you rich or poor. Well, any good stories around? |
It's the little things in life that make you rich or poor. |

It's strange. This game is like "Red Light, Green Light".... |
The final replaced the parenthesis with quotation marks.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|

The girl seems more ticked off from playing the game in the prototype.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|

I'm worried. There's been a lot of strange merchants lately doing business... |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Doing business when demons are about and people are scared... |
This woman's text in the prototype is more elaborate than what the final has.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Mmmm, nice smell. There's no stove, so I'll cook in this pot. |
Mmmm, nice smell. There's no stove, so I'm cooking in this pot. |
The man is already cooking his food; the final made sure to state that.
Prototype | Final USA |

Lola: Welcome home, Will. Dinner isn't ready yet. Go outside and play for a while. |
Name changes.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|

Hold it! Many demons are prowling around outside the town. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Didn't your teacher warn you not to spend so much time outside of town? |
Didn't your teacher warn you not to leave town without your parents? |
In the prototype, the man blocking the exit talks about ghosts while everyone in town talks about demons; the final changed his dialogue to be consistent. The second text box makes more sense in the final, as you haven't left town yet.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
It's natural for us to call this seaside cave our second home. |
It was natural for the four friends to call this seaside cave their second home. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Usually when lessons are done at the school we gather here and talk until sundown. |
Usually, when lessons were done at the school, |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
they gathered there to talk and play games until sundown. |
The final again changes the text to third person. It also adds a third text box to mention that they also play games in the cave.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Rob: What is it, Tim? It's late. |
Lance: What is it, Will? It's late. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I'm playing cards with Morris. Wait a minute. |
I'm playing cards with Seth. Wait a minute. |
Name changes, again.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
The Princess of Edward Castle is lost! They say she came to this town! |
The Princess of Edward Castle has run away! |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
They say she came to South Cape! |
In the prototype, Erik mentions the Princess is lost. In the final he says she ran away. The final mentions she's in South Cape in another text box.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Rob: What is it? You came in such a hurry I thought something big had happened! |
Lance: That's all? |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
The princess is probably that spoiled girl Karen. Why do you like her so much? |
You came in such a hurry that I thought something really big had happened! |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
The princess is probably that spoiled girl, Kara.. The one you like so much! |
The final's dialogue flows much better and makes more sense. Erik never mentions that he liked the princess beforehand, so Lance asking why he likes her so much is confusing.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Eric: Maybe so, but soldiers will be coming to the village looking for her. |
Erik: LIAR! Maybe the soldiers will come here looking for her! |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
The soldiers from Edward Castle look cool. I want to see them. |
The soldiers from Edward Castle look so cool. I want a steel helmet, too. |
Erik's dialogue in the final has more flavor to it.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Rob: Tim, come over and sit next to Eric. |
Lance: Will, get over here and sit next to Erik. |
Lance is more demanding in the final.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Morris: I'm not interested in girls. I like reading better. |
Seth: I'm not interested in girls. I like adventures better. |
The first major character difference! Seth is a bookworm in the prototype.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Rob: What, Tim? Going home already? |
Lance: What, Will? Going home already? |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
It's not dinner time yet, let's play a little while longer. |
It's not dinner time yet. Let's play a little while longer. |
The final fixed another run-on sentence.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Rob: He moved the statue that's in the corner of this cave. |
Lance: He moved the statue that's in the corner of the cave. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Tim. Show me again. |
Will. Show me again. |
Minor differences.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Eric: Last time he moved the statue a long way. |
Erik: Last time you moved the statue a long way. |
Erik is talking to you in third-person when you interact with him at this point in the prototype.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Rob: He draws it to him by waving the Flute around like a baton. |
Lance: Draw it to you by spinning the Flute around like a baton. |
Same with Lance.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Morris: Face the statue and push the LR Buttons. |
Seth: Face the statue and push the L/R Buttons. |
The prototype makes it sound like you have to push both L and R; in reality, pressing either one (or both) works.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Morris: No matter how many times I see it I'm still amazed. |
Seth: No matter how many times I see it, I'm still amazed. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
But why can you move the statue when you can't move anything else... |
But why can you move the statue when you can't move anything else...? |
The final added a question mark. Also, another added comma, yet again.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Eric: If I could do that, too... |
Erik: If I could only do that... |
Minor changes.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Rob: Next. Pick a card. |
Lance: Next. Pick a card, any card. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I'll put four cards face down. |
I'll put four cards face down. Pick the one you think is the Ace of Diamonds. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Pick up the one you think is the Ace of Diamonds. |
The final condenses all the text into two text boxes.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Rob: Pick up the one you think is the Ace of Diamonds. |
Lance: Pick the one you think is the Ace of Diamonds. |
More minor changes.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Tim picked up a card. | Will picks up a card. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
It was obviously an Ace of Diamonds. |
It is the Ace of Diamonds, of course! |
The final changes it from the past tense to the present tense. It also makes it seem like more of an impressive feat.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Eric: I'm speechless... |
Erik: I'm speechless... |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Morris. This is called a supernatural power, right? |
Hey, Seth. This is some type of psychic power, right? |
In the prototype, Erik asks if it's a generic supernatural power rather than a psychic power. Due to Seth being a bookworm in the prototype, it makes more sense why Erik asks him this question.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Morris: It's a supernatural power. |
Seth: Yeah, it must be some kind of psychic power thing. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Just like the word says, it's super-natural.... |
If I didn't know any better, I'd think it was magic. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
The human senses are seeing, |
Most people have five senses... sight, |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
hearing, | hearing, |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
taste, | taste, |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
smell, | smell, |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
and touch. Five in all. |
and touch. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I thought a supernatural power was a kind of sixth sense. |
I think Will's psychic power is some kind of sixth sense. |
Seth is more sure of Will having supernatural powers in the prototype. What he says about the senses flows better in the final.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
It was already dark by the time we left the cave. |
It was already dark by the time Will left the cave. |
Will is the only one who left the cave at this point; the final made sure to state that.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
The pig's wrecking the room! |
The pig's wrecking the room! |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
But why is a pig in my house... |
But why is there a pig in my house? |
The ellipsis was replaced with a question mark.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Karen: Becky! You shouldn't be cruel to strangers! |
Kara: Hamlet! You shouldn't snort at strangers! |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Is this your house? | Is this your house? |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Tim: Yes...and so??! |
Will: Yeah...so? |
The prototype makes more sense since Hamlet was wrecking the house and literally pushed Will out of the way when he attempted to go up the stairs. Will also has a stronger reaction to a stranger being in his house in the prototype.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Karen: You look a little shabby.... |
Kara: Frankly, you look a little shabby.... |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Tim: Well, excuse me...!! |
Will: Well, excuse me...!! |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Karen: Your father? Mother? Not here, eh? |
Kara: Your father? Mother? Not here, huh? |
Kara is very slightly less rude in the final.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Karen: I know. Olman, the explorer. He met with an accident. |
Kara: I know. Olman, the explorer. They say he was lost. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Tim: He'll come back some day. |
Will: He'll come back some day. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Karen: Are you mad? ...No. |
Kara: Are you sad? ...No? |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I'd be sad, if it were me. I'm sorry... |
I'd be sad, if it were me. I'm sorry... |
Kara is really trying to get on Will's nerves in the prototype. Asking if Will is mad is a typo, since she talks about being sad in the following text box.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Lola: Welcome home, Tim. When I sing opera I lose track of time... Dinner's not ready yet. |
Welcome home, Will. When I sing opera, I lose track of the time... |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Dinner's not ready yet. |
You guessed it, another comma added in the final. The final also added a second text box to better fit the change in subject.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Bill: Oh, my! I haven't sung this well in a long time. |
Bill: Oh, my! I haven't sung like this in a long time. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Your grandmother Lola used to be a singer. |
Your grandmother Lola used to be a singer. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I fell in love with her voice. That's why I proposed to her. |
I fell in love with her voice. That's why I married her. |
Bill says he proposed to Lola because of her voice in the prototype. In the final, he says her voice is why he married her.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Soldier: Princess! I've been looking for you! |
Soldier:Princess! I've been looking for you! |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Karen: I don't know you. Get out! |
Kara: I don't know you. Be gone! |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Soldier: What are you saying? If I don't take you home I lose my head. |
Soldier: What are you saying? If I don't take you home, I'll lose my head? |
The final enigmatically adds a question mark at the end of the soldier's text. And what else? Another added comma, again!
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Karen: You're mistaken. I'm Bobongo, the flower seller. |
Kara: What do I care if you lose your head? |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Soldier: Princess! | Soldier: Princess! |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Do you think I'd be taken in by such a bold-faced lie? |
Do you think I have nothing better to do than chase you down? |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I must take you home, it's the King's orders! |
I must take you home. It's the King's orders! |
A very interesting change. Kara lies about her identity in the prototype, whereas she states she simply doesn't care about the soldier in the final. The prototype's dialogue here is more entertaining as a result. Even more interesting is that Kara's text color changes in the prototype when she tries to conceal her identity.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Karen: I'm sorry I lied to you. I'm King Edward's daughter Karen. |
Kara: I'm sorry I lied to you. I'm King Edward's daughter, Kara. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Your name is Tim? I don't think this is our first meeting. Let's be good friends. |
Will. I feel as though we've met before, as if we were good friends. |
The final's dialogue is worded better overall, but what she says is addressed to Will and she didn't lie to him at all in the final. In the prototype, Kara suddenly making friends with Will while being physically dragged by soldiers is a bit odd. Also, another comma.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Bill: It's that girl who likes to play practical jokes. Heh heh heh. |
Bill: So, that girl likes to play practical jokes. Heh heh heh. |
While Bill is referring to Kara in the prototype, Kara isn't present at this point. The final fixes this, but the part about joking has less of an impact since she didn't lie about her identity.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Lola: Edward Castle... There's an big viaduct under the castle. |
Lola: Edward Castle... There's a big viaduct under the castle. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I'm the one who built that waterway maze. |
Your grandfather designed it. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Tim: What! Really? |
Will: What! Really? |
The prototype incorrectly uses "an" to refer to the big viaduct. Lola mistakenly mentions she built it in the prototype; in the final, she says Bill (Will's grandfather) built it. In the prototype, Lola also mentions it's a maze.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
There's a prison under that castle. |
There's a prison under the castle. |
Prototype | Final USA |

Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I feel bad that I built a prison where people are punished... |
I feel bad that I built a prison where people disappear and are never heard from again. |
Minor changes until the last text box.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|

Bill: Will, do you think Lola's meals have been a little strange lately? |
Prototype | Final USA |

Prototype | Final USA |

Maybe there's something bothering her that she can't talk about... |
Maybe there's something bothering her that she can't talk about... |
The prototype mentions a different array of foods that are merely odd, which the final changes to recipes that are outright absurd. Additionally, there's not one, but two commas missing in the prototype!
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Tim: Finally, we had meat pie for dinner. With whipped cream... |
Will: We sat down to a feast of snail pie... with whipped cream! |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I only got one piece, but Grandpa Bill ate three pieces. |
I only got one piece, but Grandpa Bill ate half the pie. |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
That night I dreamed that Karen and I took a trip around the world... |
That night Will dreamed that Kara and he took a trip around the world... |
Will's family had a meat pie for dinner in the prototype, whereas they had a feast of snail pie in the final, and the amount of food Grandpa Bill ate in the final was changed to be relative to the whole pie. The final's last text box was changed to third person.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
And the next morning something began to happened... |
And the next morning something began to happen... |
The prototype contains a morning dose of Engrish.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Bill: Morning. I had to eat Lola's pie again this morning. Hmphh. |
Bill: I had more snail pie for breakfast. I left you a slice. |
Bill greets Will in the prototype. The final makes it a bit more clear that he ate leftovers from last night.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|

Bring the Crystal Ring from Olman's things to Edward Castle. King Edward |
The prototype mistakenly calls Olman's "things" his "effects."

Lola: I've been in a bad mood ever since I saw this letter. |

Oh, Will. I'll teach you a spell. When I'm upset, humming this tune makes me feel better. |
Aside from name differences, there's a space missing between the second and third sentences of the second text box in the prototype.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Even though I'd never heard it before, it seemed oddly familiar. |
Even though Will had never heard it before, it seemed oddly familiar. |
The final once again changes first person text into third person.
Prototype | Final USA |

Relatively minor changes overall.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Rob: It's a day off from our studies. Let's do something. |
Lance: It's a day off from school. Let's have some fun. |
The final fixed the second sentence, as Lance says this when already playing at the usual hangout spot.
Post-Edward's Prison
Prototype | Final USA |

Will: My Grandparents?! |
Will refers to both his grandparents at the same time in the final.
Prototype | Final USA |

An extra space was removed in the final.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Karen: Ooooh!!! Tim!! Come here! Save me! It's terrible, terrible! |
Kara: Ooooh!!! Will!! Come here! Quick! It's terrible, terrible! |
Kara is crying for help for some reason in the prototype.
Prototype | Final USA |

Kara: Look at the wall! |
Prototype | Final USA |

Some text was moved into the second text box. The Jackal is called the "Black Panther" in the prototype.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|

Kara: He's the hunter hired by my mother!! |
Another assassin to hunter change.
Prototype | Final USA |

Once he starts after you, there's no stopping him. |
Localization was probably annoyed at having to look out for so many missing commas.
Prototype | Final USA |

Lilly: It's OK. Your Grandpa and Grandma are safe. |
Lilly mentions their actual names in the prototype.

Lilly: Itory village. |
The final removed "the" from this text.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Karen: I've never been to a village like this! |
Kara: I've never heard of this village! |
Kara's text in the prototype is odd since the party never went to Itory village yet.

Neil doesn't have a loudspeaker, and it doesn't make sense for his voice to shout, so the final fixed those and made everything else more coherent.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Neil: Tim! We're close to the ground!!!! |
Neil: Will! You're falling to the ground!!!! |
Neil's dialogue was changed to sound more urgent.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Neil: Shoot!! I made a mistake!! |
Neil: Shoot!! I dropped a contact!! |
Neil has an excuse for mistiming catching Will the first time in the final.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Karen: You fool!!! Tim has taken his last breath! |
Kara: You what!!! Idiot! Will is doomed for sure now! |
Kara's response was changed accordingly. The prototype is still inaccurate since while Will is in peril, he's still alive.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Rob: Neil! It's still a little ways to the ground. Once more! |
Lance: Neil! It's still a little ways to the ground. Try again! |
Minor changes to Lance's dialogue here.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Neil: Good! Next time you'll see!! |
Neil: Okay! I'll get him this time!! |
Some interesting changes to Neil's dialogue. The prototype makes it sound like he's irritated at the others.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Neil: It was a narrow escape. |
Neil: That was a close one! |
The whole thing was rewritten to be more relevant for the current situation in the final.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Lilly: But you were great. Using something like that. |
Lilly: Neil, you were great. This invention saved Will's life! |
Lilly's dialogue is incredibly vague in the prototype. The final makes it clear what exactly she's talking about.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I'll take you to the next ruins the same way. |
We should try and locate the next ruins. |
The prototype's dialogue makes it sound like Neil knows exactly where the next ruins are.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I guess there's no such thing as a perfect human being. |
I guess nobody's perfect, including Neil. |
The final's text was changed to be directed at Neil.

Lilly: Hey... You scared me!! |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
It's all your fault my heart's in my throat!! |

Lilly is startled in the prototype but scared in the final. The final worded the second text box better.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Let's do it together. We don't know what will happen. |
Let's stick together. We don't know what will happen. |
The final clarified what Lilly wanted to do.

Strange Voice: The Purification Stone. . . in the castle . .,ED |
Strange Voice: The Purification Stone... in the castle... |
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Tim: What? A sign of life from the right-hand room... |
This text box is completely messed up in the prototype. Aside from the many redundant spaces, you have only one or two frames to glimpse the full text before it automatically moves onto the next text box. The final fixes all the issues with it.
However, while the text for the second text box is used in both versions, the trigger for both text boxes is in the same spot in the prototype! This might explain why the first text box automatically progresses. The final removed the trigger for the second text box in this instance, as there's no right-hand room on this floor.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
I could get in through the hole. Should I have a look? |
I could get in through the hole. I better have a look. |
Lilly asks a question in the prototype while she states what she's going to do in the final.

The final removed a comma!
Prototype | Final USA |

Meditation Room | Room of hope |
Interestingly, the prototype calls the Room of Hope the Meditation Room. Considering the Statue of Hope's select menu name is Prayer Statue in the prototype, this makes a lot of sense and reveals the removal of a religious reference.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|
Doesn't this statue look like it's staring at something? |
It appears as if the treasure chest is in the exact spot where |
Prototype | Final USA |

You've found the Statue of Hope! The Statue of Hope... Was there aanother room with the same name...? |
The same Hope Statue to Statue of Hope change when obtaining the second Statue of Hope. This time, it kept "another" at the end because the player already encountered a Room of Hope.
Prototype | Final USA |
---|---|

The final got the same message across in a more interesting way.
