From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of Proto:Illusion of Gaia.

A majority of text in the game was altered for the final international releases, with Nintendo publishing the game rather than Enix. The changes range from fixing grammatical and spelling errors to changing characters' personalities.

Global Changes

  • All characters referenced in text use their Japanese names.
  • Many instances of "herb" are referred to as "herbs" in the prototype.
  • "Edward's Castle" is called "Edward Castle" in the prototype.
  • "Edward's Prison" is called "Edward Prison" in the prototype.
  • "Mystic Statues" are sometimes called "Mystic Dolls" in the prototype.

Character Names

Many of the character names differ from the final international release in that they have their original Japanese names. The final names are on the left, and the prototype names are on the right.

  • Will - Tim
  • Kara - Karen
  • Hamlet - Peggy
  • Lance - Rob
  • Seth - Morris
  • Erik - Eric
  • Jackal - Black Panther

Prototype Final USA
Tim: Right.

a Jewel will appear.
Will:

the enemies around you,
a Jewel will appear.

Said after obtaining the first Power Jewel. Will confirms Gaia's advice with "Right." in the prototype, but not the final.

Jeweler Gem

Prototype Final USA
I am the Jeweler Gem.
I control the 7 seas.
I am the Jeweler Gem.
I control the Seven
Seas.

The Jeweler Gem's dialogue uses the actual number seven instead of the word.

Prototype Final USA
Once you hold up the

Once you hold up the
Red Jewels, you'll
have to come running

me in another town,

The final inserted a comma again.

Prototype Final USA
I'm holding #of the

NOTE: Replace # with the number of Red Jewels you have.

The final adds a space after the Red Jewel count.

Prototype Final USA
Mmm...This is a great
jewel. Let me hold
it for you.
Mmm...This is a rare
jewel. Let me hold
it for you.

The Jeweler Gem refers to it as just a great jewel in the prototype, but in the final he says it's a rare jewel.

Prototype Final USA
You've collected more
than 3 Jewels! According
to the list, you get
the herbs!
You've collected more
than three Jewels!
Prototype Final USA
You got the herbs! According to the list, you get the herb!
Prototype Final USA
You received the herb!

Due to how herbs are referenced in the prototype, it makes it sound like you got more than one herb when you didn't. Furthermore, in both versions the jeweler says you collected more than three even if you collected exactly three.

Prototype Final USA
You've gotten more than
5 Jewels! According to
the list your Defense
Power will be raised.
You've collected over
five Jewels! According to
the list, your Defense
Power will be raised.

The final adjusted the wording and changed the number five to its word form.

Prototype Final USA
You've gotten more than
8 Jewels! According to
the list your Life
Power will be raised.
You've collected over,
eight Jewels! According to
the list, your Life
Power will be raised.

Aside from the usual number change, the final adjusted the wording a bit, added a comma in the second sentence, and oddly introduced its own misplaced comma.

Prototype Final USA
You've gotten more than
12 Jewels! According to
the list your Strength
will be raised.
You've collected over
12 Jewels! According to
the list, your Strength
will be raised.

Minor changes to the first sentence in line with several of the previous rewards' text. A missing comma in the second sentence was fixed.

Prototype Final USA
You've gotten more than
20 Jewels! According to
the list your Psycho
Power will be raised.
You've collected over
20 Jewels! According to
the list, your Psycho
Power will be raised.

Minor changes again, including the added comma.

Prototype Final USA

30 Jewels! According to
the list your Dark
Power will be raised.
You've collected over
30 Jewels! According to
the list, your Dark

The same changes as the previous few rewards.

Items

The prototype has a space at the start of the text box that the final removed. Both versions have the same grammatical error when referring to the Jeweler Gem.

Prototype Final USA

The same past to present tense change as many other items. The final fixed a grammatical error by choosing a better word after the comma.

Prototype Final USA
He tried using the key
to the mine.
He tries using the key
to the Seaside Palace.
Prototype Final USA
The key turned, making a
strange sound.
The key turns, making a

The prototype reused the mine key use text for the Palace Key. When you actually use the key on the keyhole, the second text box is interrupted by Lilly's text as soon as it finishes.

Statue of Hope

Prototype Final USA
He raised the
Hope Statue.
He raises the
Statue of Hope.

Aside from the name change, the final once again changed the tense from past to present.

The grammar was fixed by adding a subject after the comma.

Prototype Final USA
P.S.:

P.S.:
By the way, Lilly
has left me.

The word Lance uses to describe Lilly rejecting him was changed.

Past to present...again. This time, the final also changed the standard "nothing happened" text to present tense.

Prototype Final USA

He puts one petal of
the Gorgon Flower into
the statue's mouth.

The same past to present tense change, and a line break was moved later.

Aside from Lance's name change, "page" was changed to "entry" in the final. And of course, our favorite Mystic Doll to Mystic Statue change is present here as well.

Prototype Final USA
The Mystic Dolls... The Mystic Statues...

Mystic Dolls to Mystic Statues.

The same change is present when leaving from Mt. Temple.

Prototype Final USA

Push the Start Button

your enemies.
Prototype Final USA
Find the demons
and defeat them.

Said in the first Dark Space in Edward's Prison; minor changes in the first text box.

The second text box is more interesting, as it stops after "area" and requires another input to progress despite the lack of a marker indicating so; the rest of the text scrolls up to fit everything else. The final, on the other hand, manages to fit everything nicely without needing to scroll.

The third text box is more direct in the final. Its last sentence was slightly modified and put into a fourth text box in the final.

Prototype Final USA

Prototype Final USA
Tim gradually loses

This text appears when first turning into Freedan. The prototype duplicates the first text box but with sound for Freedan talking in the second, making it an odd thing to say to someone. As a result of the duplication, the prototype has an extra text box. A missing comma in the prototype's fifth text box was added in the final's fourth text box.

Prototype Final USA

South Cape

Prototype Final USA
I'm the only one who
returned safely...
Somehow, I made it
back to South Cape...

In the prototype, Will says he was the only one to return back from the voyage. The final drops this and adds some mystery to him returning.

In the prototype, their mothers will know their children were kept after school instead of think they were. Oh, and the final added yet another missing comma.

Prototype Final USA
You have a habit of
jumping down from
places. Well, nothing I
can do about that.
You have a habit of
jumping down from
places. Well, I guess
I can't really stop you.

The final has a bit more personality in this dialogue.

Prototype Final USA
You look like a fast
runner. When running,
push the Control
Pad twice.
You look like a fast
runner. To run, push the
Control Pad twice.

The prototype fails to tell you how to actually run.

Prototype Final USA
We live in troubled
times, but I can't sell
a weapon to a child.
We may live in troubled
times, but I won't sell
a weapon to a child.

The final makes it clear that the Salesman is capable of selling a weapon to you but just won't do so. The final also adds "may" in the dialogue.

Prototype Final USA
I feel sorry for Morris. I feel sorry
for Seth.

Aside from the character name changes, the final oddly adds a line break despite Seth being shorter than Morris.

Prototype Final USA
I understand why, he
hates to see
his parents fighting
every day.
I understand why.
He hates to see
his parents fighting
every day.

The final fixes the run-on sentence.

Prototype Final USA
No sooner was the door
to Morris's house opened
than a jar came flying out
from inside!
No sooner was the door
to Seth's house opened
than a jar came flying
out!

Character name differences aside, the final changed this text to be less awkward.

Prototype Final USA
What's wrong with my
having a little fun on
my hard-earned money!!
What's wrong with
having a little fun with
my hard-earned money!!

Seth's father says some amusing Engrish that was fixed in the final.

Prototype Final USA
I put up with it for
Morris's sake, but if it
weren't for him I'd have
left long ago!
I put up with it for
Seth's sake, but if it
weren't for him, I'd have
left long ago!

An added comma, again.

Prototype Final USA
My astronomer friend
said something very ,
strange: a star is
approaching the Earth.
My astronomer friend
said something very
strange: a star is
approaching the Earth.

This time, the final removed an unnecessary comma.

Prototype Final USA
I envy you when I see
the sea breeze blowing
your hair like that...
I, under this scarf....
I envy you when I see
the sea breeze blowing
your hair like that...
Prototype Final USA
Not like mine,
under this scarf....

This woman doesn't finish her last sentence in the prototype. This sentence was replaced in the final with a second text box that finishes what she was talking about, even if it is oddly worded.

Prototype Final USA
My friend Eric
lives here.
My friend Erik
lives here.
Prototype Final USA
This is the biggest
house in South Cape.
I envy people born
to rich families...
This is the biggest
house in South Cape.
Will envied people born
to rich families...

For whatever reason, the final changes the second text box from first person, present tense to third person, past tense.

Prototype Final USA
It's the little things
in life that make you
rich or poor. Well, any
good stories around?
It's the little things
in life that make you
rich or poor.
Prototype Final USA
Well, heard any good
stories?

The last, unrelated sentence was put into another text box in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Just cleaning this big
house makes my
shoulders ache...
Cleaning this big house
all day makes my
brain ache...

Erik's mom mentions her shoulders aching in the prototype, while the final changed it to her brain aching.

Prototype Final USA
It's strange.
This game is like
( Red Light,
Green Light )....
It's strange. This
game is like
"Red Light,
Green Light"....

The final replaced the parenthesis with quotation marks.

Prototype Final USA
How long have we been
playing this....
How long have we been
playing this?

The girl seems more ticked off from playing the game in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
I'm worried. There's
been a lot of strange
merchants lately...
I'm worried. There's
been a lot of strange
merchants lately
doing business...
Prototype Final USA
Doing business when
demons are about and
people are scared...

This woman's text in the prototype is more elaborate than what the final has.

Prototype Final USA
Mmmm, nice smell.
There's no stove, so
I'll cook in this pot.
Mmmm, nice smell.
There's no stove, so
I'm cooking in this pot.

The man is already cooking his food; the final made sure to state that.

Prototype Final USA
This is my house.
The pie that
Grandma Lola is making
smells really good.
This is my house.
The pie that
Grandma Lola is making
smells really great.

The pie smells better to Will in the final version.

Prototype Final USA
Lola: Welcome home,
Tim. Dinner isn't ready
yet. Go outside and
play for a while.
Lola: Welcome home,
Will. Dinner isn't ready
yet. Go outside and
play for a while.

Name changes.

Prototype Final USA
Hey hey. Outside
the town many ghosts
prowl around.
Hold it! Many demons
are prowling around
outside the town.
Prototype Final USA
Didn't your teacher warn
you not to spend so much
time outside of town?
Didn't your teacher warn
you not to leave town
without your parents?

In the prototype, the man blocking the exit talks about ghosts while everyone in town talks about demons; the final changed his dialogue to be consistent. The second text box makes more sense in the final, as you haven't left town yet.

Prototype Final USA
It's natural for us to
call this seaside cave
our second home.
It was natural for the
four friends to call
this seaside cave their
second home.
Prototype Final USA
Usually when lessons are
done at the school we
gather here and talk
until sundown.
Usually, when lessons
were done at the school,
Prototype Final USA
they gathered there to
talk and play games
until sundown.

The final again changes the text to third person. It also adds a third text box to mention that they also play games in the cave.

Prototype Final USA
Rob:
What is it, Tim?
It's late.
Lance:
What is it, Will?
It's late.
Prototype Final USA
I'm playing cards
with Morris.
Wait a minute.
I'm playing cards
with Seth.
Wait a minute.

Name changes, again.

Prototype Final USA
The Princess of Edward
Castle is lost! They say
she came to this town!
The Princess of Edward
Castle has run away!
Prototype Final USA
They say she came to
South Cape!

In the prototype, Erik mentions the Princess is lost. In the final he says she ran away. The final mentions she's in South Cape in another text box.

Prototype Final USA
Rob: What is it?
You came in such a hurry
I thought something big
had happened!
Lance: That's all?
Prototype Final USA
The princess is probably
that spoiled girl Karen.
Why do you like her
so much?
You came in such a hurry
that I thought something
really big had happened!
Prototype Final USA
The princess is probably
that spoiled girl, Kara..
The one you like so much!

The final's dialogue flows much better and makes more sense. Erik never mentions that he liked the princess beforehand, so Lance asking why he likes her so much is confusing.

Prototype Final USA
Eric:
Maybe so, but soldiers
will be coming to the
village looking for her.
Erik: LIAR!
Maybe the soldiers
will come here
looking for her!
Prototype Final USA
The soldiers from
Edward Castle look cool.
I want to see them.
The soldiers from
Edward Castle look so
cool. I want a steel
helmet, too.

Erik's dialogue in the final has more flavor to it.

Prototype Final USA
Rob:
Tim, come over and
sit next to Eric.
Lance:
Will, get over here and
sit next to Erik.

Lance is more demanding in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Morris: I'm not
interested in girls.
I like reading better.
Seth: I'm not
interested in girls. I
like adventures better.

The first major character difference! Seth is a bookworm in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Rob:
What, Tim?
Going home already?
Lance:
What, Will?
Going home already?
Prototype Final USA
It's not dinner time
yet, let's play a little
while longer.
It's not dinner time
yet. Let's play a little
while longer.

The final fixed another run-on sentence.

Prototype Final USA
Rob: He moved
the statue that's in the
corner of this cave.
Lance: He moved
the statue that's in the
corner of the cave.
Prototype Final USA
Tim.
Show me again.
Will.
Show me again.

Minor differences.

Prototype Final USA
Eric:
Last time he moved
the statue a long way.
Erik:
Last time you moved
the statue a long way.

Erik is talking to you in third-person when you interact with him at this point in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Rob: He draws it to him
by waving the Flute
around like a baton.
Lance: Draw it to you
by spinning the Flute
around like a baton.

Same with Lance.

Prototype Final USA
Morris:
Face the statue and
push the LR Buttons.
Seth:
Face the statue and
push the L/R Buttons.

The prototype makes it sound like you have to push both L and R; in reality, pressing either one (or both) works.

Prototype Final USA
Morris: No matter how
many times I see it
I'm still amazed.
Seth: No matter how
many times I see it,
I'm still amazed.
Prototype Final USA
But why can you move the
statue when you can't
move anything else...
But why can you move the
statue when you can't
move anything else...?

The final added a question mark. Also, another added comma, yet again.

Prototype Final USA
Eric:
If I could do
that, too...
Erik:
If I could only
do that...

Minor changes.

Prototype Final USA
Rob:
Next. Pick a card.
Lance:
Next. Pick a
card, any card.
Prototype Final USA
I'll put four cards
face down.
I'll put four cards face
down. Pick the one
you think is the
Ace of Diamonds.
Prototype Final USA
Pick up the one you think
is the Ace of Diamonds.

The final condenses all the text into two text boxes.

Prototype Final USA
Rob: Pick up the one
you think is the
Ace of Diamonds.
Lance: Pick the one
you think is the Ace of Diamonds.

More minor changes.

Prototype Final USA
Tim picked up a card. Will picks up a card.
Prototype Final USA
It was obviously an
Ace of Diamonds.
It is the Ace of
Diamonds, of course!

The final changes it from the past tense to the present tense. It also makes it seem like more of an impressive feat.

Prototype Final USA
Eric:
I'm speechless...
Erik:
I'm speechless...
Prototype Final USA
Morris.
This is called a
supernatural power, right?
Hey, Seth.
This is some type of
psychic power, right?

In the prototype, Erik asks if it's a generic supernatural power rather than a psychic power. Due to Seth being a bookworm in the prototype, it makes more sense why Erik asks him this question.

Prototype Final USA
Morris:
It's a supernatural
power.
Seth: Yeah, it must be
some kind of psychic
power thing.
Prototype Final USA
Just like the word says,
it's super-natural....
If I didn't know any better,
I'd think it was magic.
Prototype Final USA
The human senses are seeing,
Most people have
five senses...
sight,
Prototype Final USA
hearing, hearing,
Prototype Final USA
taste, taste,
Prototype Final USA
smell, smell,
Prototype Final USA
and touch.
Five in all.
and touch.
Prototype Final USA
I thought a supernatural
power was a kind of
sixth sense.
I think Will's psychic
power is some kind
of sixth sense.

Seth is more sure of Will having supernatural powers in the prototype. What he says about the senses flows better in the final.

Prototype Final USA
It was already
dark by the time we
left the cave.
It was already
dark by the time Will
left the cave.

Will is the only one who left the cave at this point; the final made sure to state that.

Prototype Final USA
The pig's wrecking
the room!
The pig's wrecking
the room!
Prototype Final USA
But why is a pig
in my house...
But why is there
a pig in my house?

The ellipsis was replaced with a question mark.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
Becky! You shouldn't be
cruel to strangers!
Kara:
Hamlet! You shouldn't
snort at strangers!
Prototype Final USA
Is this your house? Is this your house?
Prototype Final USA
Tim:
Yes...and so??!
Will:
Yeah...so?

The prototype makes more sense since Hamlet was wrecking the house and literally pushed Will out of the way when he attempted to go up the stairs. Will also has a stronger reaction to a stranger being in his house in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: You look
a little shabby....
Kara: Frankly, you look
a little shabby....
Prototype Final USA
Tim:
Well, excuse me...!!
Will:
Well, excuse me...!!
Prototype Final USA
Karen: Your father?
Mother? Not here, eh?
Kara: Your father?
Mother? Not here, huh?

Kara is very slightly less rude in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: I know. Olman,
the explorer. He met
with an accident.
Kara: I know. Olman,
the explorer. They say
he was lost.
Prototype Final USA
Tim: He'll come
back some day.
Will: He'll come
back some day.
Prototype Final USA
Karen:
Are you mad?
...No.
Kara:
Are you sad?
...No?
Prototype Final USA
I'd be sad, if it were
me.
I'm sorry...
I'd be sad, if it were
me.
I'm sorry...

Kara is really trying to get on Will's nerves in the prototype. Asking if Will is mad is a typo, since she talks about being sad in the following text box.

Prototype Final USA
Lola: Welcome home,
Tim. When I sing opera
I lose track of time...
Dinner's not ready yet.
Welcome home,
Will. When I sing opera,
I lose track of
the time...
Prototype Final USA
Dinner's not ready yet.

You guessed it, another comma added in the final. The final also added a second text box to better fit the change in subject.

Prototype Final USA
Bill:
Oh, my! I haven't sung
this well in a long time.
Bill:
Oh, my! I haven't sung
like this in a long time.
Prototype Final USA
Your grandmother Lola
used to be a singer.
Your grandmother Lola
used to be a singer.
Prototype Final USA
I fell in love with her
voice.
That's why I proposed to
her.
I fell in love with her
voice. That's why I
married her.

Bill says he proposed to Lola because of her voice in the prototype. In the final, he says her voice is why he married her.

Prototype Final USA
Soldier: Princess! I've
been looking for you!
Soldier:Princess! I've
been looking for you!
Prototype Final USA
Karen:
I don't know you.
Get out!
Kara:
I don't know you.
Be gone!
Prototype Final USA
Soldier: What are you
saying? If I don't take
you home I lose my head.
Soldier: What are you
saying? If I don't take
you home,
I'll lose my head?

The final enigmatically adds a question mark at the end of the soldier's text. And what else? Another added comma, again!

Prototype Final USA
Karen: You're mistaken.
I'm Bobongo, the
flower seller.
Kara:
What do I care if you lose your head?
Prototype Final USA
Soldier: Princess! Soldier: Princess!
Prototype Final USA
Do you think
I'd be taken in by such a
bold-faced lie?
Do you think I have
nothing better to do
than chase you down?
Prototype Final USA
I must take you home,
it's the King's orders!
I must take you home.
It's the King's orders!

A very interesting change. Kara lies about her identity in the prototype, whereas she states she simply doesn't care about the soldier in the final. The prototype's dialogue here is more entertaining as a result. Even more interesting is that Kara's text color changes in the prototype when she tries to conceal her identity.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: I'm sorry I lied
to you. I'm King
Edward's daughter Karen.
Kara: I'm sorry I lied
to you. I'm King
Edward's daughter, Kara.
Prototype Final USA
Your name is Tim?
I don't think this is
our first meeting. Let's
be good friends.
Will.
I feel as though we've
met before, as if we
were good friends.

The final's dialogue is worded better overall, but what she says is addressed to Will and she didn't lie to him at all in the final. In the prototype, Kara suddenly making friends with Will while being physically dragged by soldiers is a bit odd. Also, another comma.

Prototype Final USA
Bill: It's that girl who
likes to play practical
jokes. Heh heh heh.
Bill: So, that girl
likes to play practical
jokes. Heh heh heh.

While Bill is referring to Kara in the prototype, Kara isn't present at this point. The final fixes this, but the part about joking has less of an impact since she didn't lie about her identity.

Prototype Final USA
Lola: Edward Castle...
There's an big viaduct
under the castle.
Lola: Edward Castle...
There's a big viaduct
under the castle.
Prototype Final USA
I'm the one who built
that waterway maze.
Your grandfather designed
it.
Prototype Final USA
Tim:
What! Really?
Will:
What! Really?

The prototype incorrectly uses "an" to refer to the big viaduct. Lola mistakenly mentions she built it in the prototype; in the final, she says Bill (Will's grandfather) built it. In the prototype, Lola also mentions it's a maze.

Prototype Final USA
There's a prison
under that castle.
There's a prison
under the castle.
Prototype Final USA
It's built like a maze
to keep the prisoners
from escaping.
It's built like a maze
to keep the prisoners
from escaping.
Prototype Final USA
I feel bad that I built
a prison where people
are punished...
I feel bad that I built
a prison where people
disappear and are never
heard from again.

Minor changes until the last text box.

Prototype Final USA
Bill: Tim, do you think
Lola's meals have been a
little strange lately?
Bill: Will, do you think
Lola's meals have been a
little strange lately?
Prototype Final USA
Last night soybeans and
rice. Before that fish
curry. Can't stand it!
Last night, licorich and
rice. Before that, mouse
fritters.
I can't stand it anymore!
Prototype Final USA
Sometimes old people,
if they're surrounded by
problems, get a little
forgetful.
Sometimes old people,
if they're surrounded by
problems, get a little
forgetful.
Prototype Final USA
Maybe there's something
bothering her that she
can't talk about...
Maybe there's something
bothering her that she
can't talk about...

The prototype mentions a different array of foods that are merely odd, which the final changes to recipes that are outright absurd. Additionally, there's not one, but two commas missing in the prototype!

Prototype Final USA
Tim: Finally, we had
meat pie for dinner.
With whipped cream...
Will: We sat down to
a feast of snail pie...
with whipped cream!
Prototype Final USA
I only got one piece,
but Grandpa Bill ate three pieces.
I only got one piece,
but Grandpa Bill ate
half the pie.
Prototype Final USA
That night I dreamed
that Karen and I took a
trip around the world...
That night Will dreamed
that Kara and he took a
trip around the world...

Will's family had a meat pie for dinner in the prototype, whereas they had a feast of snail pie in the final, and the amount of food Grandpa Bill ate in the final was changed to be relative to the whole pie. The final's last text box was changed to third person.

Prototype Final USA
And the next morning
something began to
happened...
And the next morning
something began to
happen...

The prototype contains a morning dose of Engrish.

Prototype Final USA
Bill: Morning. I had
to eat Lola's pie again
this morning. Hmphh.
Bill: I had more snail
pie for breakfast.
I left you a slice.

Bill greets Will in the prototype. The final makes it a bit more clear that he ate leftovers from last night.

Prototype Final USA
Lola:
Good morning, Tim.
A letter has come for
you from King Edward.
Lola:
Good morning, Will.
A letter has come for
you from King Edward.
Prototype Final USA
This is what is written
in the letter.
This is what is written
in the letter.
Prototype Final USA
Bring the Crystal Ring
from Olman's effects
to Edward Castle.
              King Edward
Bring the Crystal Ring
from Olman's things
to Edward Castle.
              King Edward

The prototype mistakenly calls Olman's "things" his "effects."

Prototype Final USA
Lola: I've been in a
bad mood ever since I
saw this letter.
Lola: I've been in a
bad mood ever since I
saw this letter.
Prototype Final USA
Oh, Tim. I'll teach
you a spell.When I'm
upset, humming this tune
makes me feel better.
Oh, Will. I'll teach
you a spell. When I'm
upset, humming this tune
makes me feel better.

Aside from name differences, there's a space missing between the second and third sentences of the second text box in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Even though I'd never
heard it before, it
seemed oddly familiar.
Even though Will had
never heard it before,
it seemed oddly familiar.

The final once again changes first person text into third person.

Prototype Final USA
Bill:
A crystal ring...
Never heard of it.
Bill:
A crystal ring...?
Never heard of it.
Prototype Final USA
There was nothing
like that in the luggage
your father, Olman,
left behind.
There was nothing
like that in the luggage
your father, Olman,
left behind.
Prototype Final USA
Maybe we could go to
Edward Castle. We could
see the princess from
yesterday. Heh heh.
Maybe we could go to
Edward Castle. We could
see the princess.
Heh heh.

Relatively minor changes overall.

Prototype Final USA
Rob: It's a day off
from our studies.
Let's do something.
Lance: It's a day off
from school.
Let's have some fun.

The final fixed the second sentence, as Lance says this when already playing at the usual hangout spot.

Post-Edward's Prison

Prototype Final USA
Tim:
My Grandpa and Grandma?!
Will:
My Grandparents?!

Will refers to both his grandparents at the same time in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
Grandpa  Bill!
Kara:
Grandpa Bill!

An extra space was removed in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Ooooh!!! Tim!!
Come here! Save me!
It's terrible, terrible!
Kara: Ooooh!!! Will!!
Come here! Quick!
It's terrible, terrible!

Kara is crying for help for some reason in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Look at this wall!
This mark, a black
panther...
Kara: Look at the wall!
Prototype Final USA
The Black Panther's
been here!!
This mark, a jackal...
The Jackal's here!

Some text was moved into the second text box. The Jackal is called the "Black Panther" in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:He's an
assassin hired by
my mother!!
Kara: He's the
hunter hired by
my mother!!

Another assassin to hunter change.

Prototype Final USA
Once he starts after you
there's no stopping him.
Once he starts after you,
there's no stopping him.

Localization was probably annoyed at having to look out for so many missing commas.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: It's OK.
Your Grandpa Bill and
Grandma Lola are safe.
Lilly: It's OK.
Your Grandpa and
Grandma are safe.

Lilly mentions their actual names in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly:
The Itory village.
Lilly:
Itory village.

The final removed "the" from this text.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: I've never been
to a village like this!
Kara: I've never heard
of this village!

Kara's text in the prototype is odd since the party never went to Itory village yet.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: Naturally. Lilly: Naturally. My
village has a barrier
around it.
Prototype Final USA
My village has a barrier
around it. Ordinary
people can't see it.
Ordinary people like you
can't see it.

Text was moved around in the final. Lilly also calls Kara ordinary in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
I'm going too!
Kara:
I'm going, too!

Commas, gotta love 'em.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: It's dangerous
for a princess.
Lilly: It's far too
dangerous
for a princess.

The journey is made out to be more dangerous in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Nothing can stop
me! I do whatever
I want!!
Kara: You can't stop
royalty! I do whatever
I want!!

Kara defends herself with her royalty in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: Before we go to
my village should we
meet the townspeople?
Lilly: Before we go to
my village, should we
meet the townspeople?

I'd like another comma with that, please.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: Is that OK?
To see how things are
in the village?
Lilly: Is that OK?
We should see how
things are in the village.

Minor changes.

Prototype Final USA
Rob: What happened, Tim?
You look so gloomy.
Lance: What happened,
Will?
You look so gloomy.

The final added a line break.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: Are you
determined to go?
 Yes
 No
Lilly: Are you
ready to go?
 Yes
 No

Lilly's question makes more sense in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: Are you ignorant
of the world!?
Lilly: Are you totally
ignorant of the world!?

A word was added in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Hey, Tim is
my friend!?
 Yes, of course.
 I don't understand...
Kara: Hey, Will,
aren't you my friend,
too!?
Prototype Final USA
 Yes, of course.
 I, umm,  I'm going
 to the village.

The final moved the options to a second text box and has a different second option.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
I'm glad, Tim.
Let's go hand in hand.
Kara:
I'm glad, Will. Let's
go hand in hand.

The second line break is at different points in both versions.

Prototype Final USA
The three set off for
Lilly's village together.
Together,
the three set off for
Lilly's village.

Edward's Castle

Prototype Final USA
This is King Edward's
castle. Be courteous.
Even so, the King
is very strict.
This is King Edward's
castle. Be courteous
and know that the King
is very strict.

The soldier's dialogue flows better in the final.

Prototype Final USA
In exchange I will give
you one Red Jewel.
In exchange, I will give
you one Red Jewel.

A missing comma in the prototype was added in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Recently an assassin was
hired. I wonder what the
King is thinking...
Recently, a hunter was
hired.
I wonder what the King
is thinking...

The maid refers to the assassin as a hunter in the final. The overall meaning doesn't change, but it's less clear what kind of hunter was hired in the final. And yet another missing comma was added in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Soldier:
This is the underground
prison. Ordinary people
can't enter.
Soldier:
This is the underground
prison. Innocent people
can't enter.

The soldier's text makes a bit more sense in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Who...who are you... I... I love... you...

The soldier doesn't show that he likes the maid very much in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Well, he's
embarrassed...
Well, he's
shy...
Prototype Final USA
I'm sure that somewhere
in the world there is
someone who is
thinking of me.
I'm glad that somewhere
in the world there is
someone who is
thinking of me.

The prototype's text implies that the soldier doesn't like the maid and the maid is hopeful, whereas the final shows the maid's gratitude because the soldier confessed his love to her.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: My guest? Kara: A guest?

Kara implies that she was expecting Will in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Soldier:
This is just a poor boy.
Soldier:
This is just a shabby boy.
Prototype Final USA
Tim:
It's me, Karen!
Will:
It's me, Kara.

The soldier calls Will "poor" in the prototype but "shabby" in the final. Will also seems more excited to see Kara in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Recently something very
strange has happened in.
the castle.
Recently, something very
strange has happened in
the castle.
Prototype Final USA
My mother has hired
an assassin.
It's ominous...
My mother has hired
a famous hunter.
It's ominous...

The final adds a comma and fixes the period in the middle of the sentence. Another assassin to hunter change; this time, the hunter is famous in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:   I feel uneasy.
My father and mother
seem to have changed.
Kara:   I feel scared.
My father and mother
seem to have changed

Kara's concern is more serious in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
Please come here, Tim.
Kara:
Please come back, Will.

The final makes more sense since Will is already there.

Prototype Final USA
Soldier: So you are
Tim. Sorry to have kept
you waiting. Let's go
see King Edward.
Soldier: So you are
Will.
Prototype Final USA
Sorry to have kept
you waiting. Let's go
see King Edward.

The text is the same, but the final separated the dialogue into two text boxes.

Prototype Final USA
Queen Edward:
The king sent you the
letter. Talk to him.
Queen Edwina:
The King sent you the
letter. Talk to him.

Queen Edwina is called "Queen Edward" in the prototype. King was capitalized in the final.

Prototype Final USA
King Edward:
You are Tim?
You look so shabby.
King Edward:
You're Will?
You look so...shabby.

Minor grammatical changes in the first sentence. King Edward pauses before calling Will shabby in the final.

Prototype Final USA
King Edward:
Hmm?
Are you lying to me?!
King Edward:
Hmm?
Are you lying
to me, young whelp?!
Prototype Final USA
That's what I thought!
Guards!! Throw this
scoundrel in prison!!
Guards!! Throw this
impudent weasel in
prison!!

King Edward somehow knew Will wasn't going to bring the ring in the prototype. This was changed in the final along with the names he calls Will.

Prototype Final USA
Queen Edward:
Did you say Ma'am??!
Queen Edwina:
Did you say Ma'am??!

Queen Edwina is called "Queen Edward" in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Don't let the King find
you... Then I'll take
care of the Princess.
Don't let the King find
you... Please take
care of the Princess.

The maid considers if you fail in the prototype and if you succeed in the final.

Prototype Final USA
You've escaped many
times from the prison...
You've escaped
from the prison...

Will escaped only once from the prison, so this doesn't make as much sense in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Was the guard asleep
outside? His nickname is
"Old Sleepyhead".
Sleeping again.
Was the guard asleep
outside? His nickname is
"Old Snorehead."
Sleeping again.

The guard's nickname is different between versions. A period was moved inside the quotation marks in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Her name is
Peggy. Cute, isn't she?
Kara: His name is
Hamlet. Cute, isn't he?
Prototype Final USA
Karen: She's very smart.
She has some kind of
strange power...
Kara: He's very smart.
He has some kind of
strange pig power...

Another major change! Hamlet is named Peggy in the prototype and is female instead of male. Kara mentions a generic strange power that is a more specific "strange pig power" in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Oh, wait!
It will be a long trip,
we should take food!
Karen: Oh, wait!
It will be a long trip,
we should take food!
Prototype Final USA
Would you go to the
cellar for me?
Would you go to the
cellar with me?

Localization forgot to change Kara's name in the first text box! Yet, they changed the second to mention that she wants to go with Will instead of have him go alone.

Prototype Final USA
You have the large
roast!
You've found a large,
yummy roast leg of yak!

The final mentions that you actually got something and is more detailed about what it is. Interestingly, the item description for this in the final is "Large Roast from Edward Castle."

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
At last we leave.
Kara:
At last, we leave.

You guessed it; another comma.

Edward's Prison

Prototype Final USA
Anyway, we have to
think of a way
to get out of here.
Anyway, I have to
think of a way
to get out of here.

Will's alone at this point in the game, so the plural reference in the prototype was changed to be singular.

Prototype Final USA
Those prisoners must
have been encouraged
by this moss....
Those prisoners must
have been encouraged
by any sign of life....

The final makes it more clear why the prisoners would be encouraged.

Prototype Final USA
For some reason he
really misses Grandma
Lola's pie...
For some reason, he
really misses Grandma
Lola's creative cuisine...

The final mentions that Will misses Lola's cooking, whereas the prototype only talks about the pie. Another missing comma added in the final.

Prototype Final USA
A familiar voice from
the Flute resounds in
his hollow ears...
A familiar voice
speaks from the flute.

The final is more direct about what is happening. Flute is capitalized in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Tim:
Father! Where are you?!
Will:
Uh, sure, Dad!
Where are you?!

Minor changes.

Prototype Final USA
I have something to ask
of you. Listen...
  Yes, if it's your wish,
  I won't forsake you!
I have something to ask
of you. Listen...
  Yes, if it's your wish!
  No! You deserted me!

The first option in the final replaced the comma with an exclamation mark. The final's second option is a harsh no answer that the prototype doesn't have.

Prototype Final USA
I, too, was once
connected with this
prison. Look at the
left-hand wall.
I, too, was once
held in this cell.
Look at the
left-hand wall.

The use of "connected" in the prototype gives off an unintended meaning; the final fixes this. Line breaks are also used differently between versions here.

Prototype Final USA
Flute: Have you
heard anything
from your Grandpa Bill?
Flute; Have you
heard anything
from Grandpa Bill?

Another minor change.

Prototype Final USA
Tim:
Grandpa?
He was an architect ...
Will:
Grandpa?
He was an architect...

A space before the ellipsis was removed.

Prototype Final USA
Flute: Starting now
you will encounter
a terrible thing.
Flute: Starting now,
you will encounter
a terrible thing.

Yep, another comma.

Prototype Final USA
Tim:
A terrible thing...?
Will:
Do I have to...?

Will questions what the terrible thing is in the prototype; in the final, he questions if he has to encounter it.

Prototype Final USA
Flute: Pick up the
stone your enemy left.
The power of the Crystal
is contained there.
Flute: Pick up the
stone your enemy left.
Prototype Final USA
That power will prove
to be your ally....
The power of the
Crystal is contained there.
Prototype Final USA
That power will prove
to be your ally....

The final moved text around and added a third text box.

Prototype Final USA
You must make a
pilgrimage to the ruins
of the world to find
the Mystic Dolls.
You must make a
pilgrimage to the ruins
of the world to find
the Mystic Statues.

The Mystic Statues are called Mystic Dolls in the prototype. The name was likely changed to sound more engaging.

Prototype Final USA
The closer you get to
the Crystal the stronger
the evil power is ...
The closer you get to
the Crystal,
the stronger the evil
power will be...

The final is more coherent. Another comma added, yet again.

Prototype Final USA
Time... No time...
Quickly... First
to the Inca ruins...
Will... No time...
Quickly... First
to the Incan ruins...

The Incan ruins are called the Inca ruins in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
The flute's voice gets
softer and disappears.
The flute's voice fades
and disappears.

Yet another minor change.

Prototype Final USA
What? There's a
letter and a key tied
to its tail...
What luck! There's a
letter and a key tied
to its tail...

Will is more excited in the final.

Prototype Final USA
I was surprised to hear
that you're in prison.
  Sorry to hear
  that you're in prison.

Kara apologizes in the final. The prototype forgets to add a space between each line to reflect that it's a letter.

Prototype Final USA
  I also am imprisoned
  in a way. Tonight I
  will leave the castle.
  I too am a prisoner
  --in a prison of silk
  and gold.
Prototype Final USA
  You also will
  be free.
                          Karen
  But tonight I
  will leave the castle
  forever.
Prototype Final USA
  You also will
  be free.
                          Kara

The final elaborated on how Kara felt she was imprisoned. It also moved the part about leaving the castle into another text box, totaling 3 text boxes.

Prototype Final USA
Hey! What did you do!! Hey! What are you doing!!

Lilly says this when you damage her in her flower form. The final reworded it to make it clearer that she's talking about hitting her.

Prototype Final USA
When you defeat the
enemies a shiny silver
Dark Gem will appear.
When you defeat the
enemies, a shiny silver
Dark Gem will appear.
Prototype Final USA
If you collect 100 of
these you gain 1 life...
If you collect 100 of
these, you gain
one life...

A comma was inserted, again. The final referenced the number one in its word form and added an extra line break.

Prototype Final USA
Strange Voice: The door
won't open unless you
push both switches at
the same time.
Strange Voice: The door
won't open unless you
push this switch on
the count of three.
Prototype Final USA
When I shout, push
the switches.
When I shout, push
the switch.

The instructions are clearer in the final, as there's no way to push both switches at the same time on your own.

Prototype Final USA
When the enemies are
destroyed Tim can return
to his original shape...
When the enemies are
destroyed,
Will can return to
his original shape...

Another added comma and an extra line break in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Why... why do you know
a melody you could only
have heard from us?
How... How do you know
a melody you could only
have heard from us?

Lilly asks why in the prototype and how in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: I have had
some of her pie, with
the unusual taste.
Lilly: I have had
some of her pie. It
tastes rather unusual,
doesn't it?

Minor changes, again.

Itory Village

Prototype Final USA
The melody, carried on
the wind, spread out
over the meadow.
The melody, carried on
the wind, spread
over the meadow.

The word "out" was removed in the final.

Prototype Final USA
There's a barrier around
this Itory village. Most
people can't see it.
There's a barrier around
this village. Most
people can't see it.
Prototype Final USA
She's getting to be
a bother....
The princess is
getting to be
a bother....
Prototype Final USA
On the road all I heard
was "My feet hurt, I'm
thirsty".
On the road, all I heard
was "My feet hurt, I'm
thirsty." I'm tired
of hearing it.
Prototype Final USA
I'm tired of hearing it.

Itory was removed from the first text box in the final. Who Lilly is talking to in the second text box was also cleared up. Lastly, the final fixed a grammatical error in the third text box and combined the prototype's fourth text box with the third.

Prototype Final USA
Lola: Tim! Tim!
Here!
Lola: Will! Will!
Over here!

Name differences aside, the final added a word.

Prototype Final USA
A man called the Black
Panther came here with
some soldiers...
A man called the Jackal
came to the house
with some soldiers...

The final fixed the dialogue, as the Jackal clearly didn't come to Itory Village.

Prototype Final USA
Lola: Grandpa
is panicking.
Lola: Grandpa
panicked.
Prototype Final USA
I destroyed their
stomachs with a
poisoned apple pie.
I destroyed their
digestion with a
poisoned marsupial pie.

Grandpa shouldn't be panicking since he's safe and sound. The final fixed this. The poisoned pie Lola fed them is different between versions.

Prototype Final USA
Lola: Right. Lilly,
thank you. I didn't
know that Princess
Karen came, too.
Lola: Lilly,
thank you. I didn't
know that Princess
Kara came, too.

Lola remembers to thank Lilly in the prototype whereas she just does it in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Tim. This is my house. Will. This is my house.
You can look around
the village, but then
come back here.
Prototype Final USA
You can look around
the village, but then
come back here.

The two text boxes were merged into one in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: The Elder is in
the flower garden.He's
very old, but very wise.
Shall we go see him?
Lilly: The Elder is in
the flower garden. He's
very old, but very wise.
Shall we go see him?

The final added a space after the first sentence.

Prototype Final USA
The Incas who lived here
were a tribe without
a written culture.
The Incas who lived here
were a tribe without
a written language.

A "written culture" doesn't make much sense, so the final fixed it.

Prototype Final USA
Even in seemingly
meaningless melodies
there is meaning.
Even in seemingly
meaningless melodies,
there is a message.

The comma adder strikes back. The last word was changed to sound better.

Prototype Final USA
The ruins are an ancient
tomb.Why can't you
leave it alone....
The ruins are an ancient
tomb. Why can't you
leave them alone?

The woman doesn't ask a question in the prototype, and there's a space missing after the first sentence. The final referred to the ruins in plural form.

Prototype Final USA
Many people have
come here to gather
Inca gold.
Many people have
come here to gather
Incan gold.
Prototype Final USA
But many who set foot
in the Inca ruins have
never returned...
But many who set foot
in the Incan ruins have
never returned...

Inca was changed to Incan in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Then all around the
world persons with
strange diseases and
lost people increased...
Then, all around the
world, disease and
famine began to increase...

The final improves the weirdly phrased sentence. Also, more added commas.

Prototype Final USA
It's said a messenger
appeared here when the
ancient world was about
to be destroyed.
It's said that a messenger
appeared here when the
ancient world was about
to be destroyed.

Minor word addition.

Prototype Final USA
Elder: It's here.
In the flowers.
I've lived too long.
Elder: I'm here.
In the flowers.
I've lived too long.

The Elder's dialogue was fixed to mention what "it" is.

Prototype Final USA
Elder: Your mother Shira
was your grandparents,
Bill and Lola's only
daughter.
Elder: Your mother, Shira,
was the only daughter
of your grandparents,
Bill and Lola.

Even more commas were added. The text was also rewritten to sound less awkward.

Prototype Final USA
All of the Itory tribe
have a strange power,
All of the Itory tribe
have a strange power,
but Shira's was
especially strong.
Prototype Final USA
but Shira's was
especially strong.
She made a barrier to
hide the town, but
your father came
through it easily.
Prototype Final USA
She made a barrier to
hide the town, but
your father came
through it easily.
Come to think of it, he
was unusual, too...
Prototype Final USA
Come to think of it, he
was unusual, too...
Were you summoned
by your father?
 Yes
 No
Prototype Final USA
That's why you were
summoned by your father?
 Yes
 No

The final merged two text boxes together. The question asked is slightly different between versions.

Prototype Final USA
Elder: An obedient
son, unlike your father.
Elder: A disobedient
son, unlike your father.

The Elder oddly praises Will after answering no to his second question in the prototype. The final fixed this.

Prototype Final USA
Elder: Good. I will
entrust you with the
Inca Statue handed down
to the village.
Elder: Good. I will
entrust you with the
Incan Statue handed down
to the village.
Prototype Final USA
The statues are the key
to the Incan riddle.
Untouched by human hands
for hundreds of years.
The statues are the key
to the Incan riddle--
untouched by human hands
for hundreds of years.
Prototype Final USA
One statue is enshrined
in the cave below.
Use all your skill to
get it.
One statue is enshrined
in the cave below.
Use all your skill to
find it.

More Inca to Incan changes. The final continues the sentence in the second text box with hyphens and mentions using skill to find it. The last change might have been made to hint at obtaining Psycho Dash before entering the cave.

Prototype Final USA
You have Inca Statue A. You've found
Incan Statue A.
Prototype Final USA
You've found Inca
Statue A! But your
inventory is full!
You've found Incan
Statue A! But your
inventory is full!

Once again, the prototype fails to mention that you obtained something, although its full inventory version of the text does. Even more Inca to Incan changes.

Prototype Final USA
Elder:
Oooh, that's the
Inca Statue!! Good job!
Elder:
Oooh, that's the
Incan Statue!!
Good job!
Prototype Final USA
I wonder if you were
put on this earth to
solve the Inca riddle...
I wonder if you were
put on this earth to
solve the Incan
riddle.

Inca to Incan, again. More line breaks were added in the final.

Prototype Final USA
I'll tell you a legend
handed down here.
I'll tell you a legend
handed down by our
people.
Prototype Final USA
Put the statue on the
Larai Cliff below the
ruins, where spirit's
breath cannot reach.
Put the statue on the
Larai Cliff below the
ruins, where the spirits'
breath cannot reach.

Minor changes in both text boxes.

Prototype Final USA
Elder:
It's said the Moon
Tribe has one more.
Elder:
It's said that the Moon
Tribe has one more.

Another minor change.

Prototype Final USA
Bill: Was the Elder
still fine?
Bill: How is the
Elder?
Prototype Final USA
When you fought the
demon at Edward Castle
did you find a shiny
silver stone?
When you fought the
demon at Edward Castle,
did you find a shiny silver stone?

Bill didn't meet the Elder very long ago, so the final changed the dialogue to match. And our good old friend, commas, were added. Again.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: No!
It's too dangerous
for young girls!
Lilly: No!
It's too dangerous
for princesses!

It's easy to see why this was changed: Lilly is a young girl herself.

Moon Tribe Camp

Prototype Final USA
Strange Voice:Guess who?
 Cotton candy's relative
 Bird man,
 Old man's ghost...
Strange Voice: Guess who?
 Cotton candy's relative
 Bird man
 Old man's ghost...

A space was added on the first line and the comma on the third line was removed.

Prototype Final USA
Strange Voice: Eeeh,
wrong! Actually, we are
the Moon Tribe.
Strange Voice: Wrong!
Actually, we are the
Moon Tribe, also
known as "Shadows."
Prototype Final USA
Also known as "Shadows".

The final combined the two text boxes into one and moved the period inside the quotation marks.

Prototype Final USA
We saw the destruction
of the Inca Empire.
We saw the destruction
of the Incan Empire.
Prototype Final USA
The Inca Statue sleeps
in the cave below...
If you like, we'll give
it to you.
The Incan Statue sleeps
in the cave below...
If you like, we'll give
it to you.

Yet even more Inca to Incan changes.

Prototype Final USA
It's come 4 times, every
800 years. The more
light reaches you, the
stronger the Dark Power.
Moon Tribe: It comes
once every 800 years.
This is the fourth time.
Prototype Final USA
What will be born of the
light this time....
The more light that
reaches you,
the stronger the Dark
Power.
Prototype Final USA
What will be born
of the light this time...

The final added a speaker to the text, rewrote it to be more coherent, and moved some text into another text box.

Prototype Final USA
One of my party has
been kidnapped.
Moon Tribe: One of my
party has been kidnapped.

The prototype forgot to mention the speaker again.

Prototype Final USA
Moon Tribe:
Yes.You're bright, but
you're still immature.
Moon Tribe:
Yes. You're bright, but
you're still immature.

The final added a space after the first sentence.

Prototype Final USA
Horrible creatures whose
hearts are filled with
hatred and destruction.
They are horrible
creatures whose hearts
are filled with
hatred and destruction.
Prototype Final USA
If you can destroy them
within 20 seconds, I'll
give you the Inca
Statue. Ku ku ku...
If you can destroy them
within 20 seconds, I'll
give you the Incan
Statue. Ku ku ku...

The final added a few words and added a line break to compensate for the extra text. You guessed it; another Inca to Incan change.

Prototype Final USA
Tim:
 (I can't go without the
 Inca Statue...)
Will:
(I can't go without the
Incan Statue...)

The prototype interestingly has Will's thoughts in a letter format for this text box. The final removed the spaces at the start of the second and third lines and changed Inca to Incan.

Prototype Final USA
Moon Tribe:
In that case I can't
give you the statue.
Ku ku ku...
Moon Tribe:
In that case, I can't
give you the statue.
Ku ku ku...

Another comma the localization team added.

Prototype Final USA
Then I'll give you
the Inca Statue.
Then I'll give you
the Incan Statue.

Inca to Incan...you probably guessed when you saw a capital I.

Prototype Final USA
You've got Inca Statue B! You've got
Incan Statue B!

And again! This time, the extra letter forced a line break in the final's.

Prototype Final USA
You've found Inca
Statue B! But your
inventory is full!
You've found Incan
Statue B! But your
inventory is full!

This is the same as Incan Statue A's inventory full text aside from "A" being changed to "B."

Prototype Final USA
There are 2 statues.
Go to the Inca ruins?
 Yes
 No
There are two statues.
Go to the Incan ruins?
 Yes
 No

And yet again! The number two was referenced by its word form as well.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly:
I know you're lying.
I know Tim's  going,
no matter what you say.
Lilly:
Will, I know you're.
lying. You must go
no matter what you say.

The final tidied up this text a bit but mistakenly placed a period where it shouldn't belong in the process.

Prototype Final USA
I don't want to fight
the demons, but if my
father's alive I'll risk
anything to see him.
I don't want to fight
the demons, but if my
father's alive, I'll risk
anything to see him.

More late night comma additions for the localization team.

Prototype Final USA
They headed to
the Inca ruins.
They headed to
the Incan ruins.

We all knew this one was coming.

Inca Ruins

Prototype Final USA
They say that this is
where the puzzle of the
Inca legend is hidden.
They say that this is
where the puzzle of the
Incan legend is hidden.

Yup, more Inca to Incan changes.

Prototype Final USA
That's probably the Inca
Gold Ship in the story.
That's probably the Incan
Gold Ship in the story.

Yup, more Inca to Incan changes. Again.

Prototype Final USA
I see. I'll wait for
you here. OK?
I'll wait for
you here. OK?

Minor change.

Prototype Final USA
"Put the statue on the
Larai Cliff below the
ruins, where the spirit's
breath cannot reach.
"Put the statue on the
Larai Cliff below the
ruins, where the spirits'
breath cannot reach.
Prototype Final USA
The valley wind will
lead you to the
Gold Ship". Remember?
The valley wind will
lead you to the
Gold Ship".

The final changed it to refer to multiple spirits. It also dropped the last word.

Larai Cliff

Prototype Final USA
You found the
diamond-shaped Block!
You found
the diamond-shaped block!

A line break was added earlier, and block was changed to lowercase.

Prototype Final USA
Father, please come
back alive.
Father, please come
back alive.
                        Nana
Prototype Final USA
Nana When you find the
Gold Ship, buy a Kruk.
                               Sabas
When you find the Gold
Ship, buy a Kruk.
                           Sabas

The prototype accidentally had Nana's signature in the second text box.

Prototype Final USA
If I can move that gold
statue I can pass...
If I can move that gold
statue, I can pass...

Another instance of the prototype missing a comma.

Prototype Final USA
Stepping on a gold
tile emits a sound.
Stepping on a gold
tile emits a sound.
Prototype Final USA
There are 4 gold tiles.
Stand on each of the four
tiles at the same time.
There are
four gold tiles.
Prototype Final USA
Stand on each of the
four tiles at the same
time.

The final splits up the text into another text box and references the first four in its word form.

Prototype Final USA
I have succeeded in
deciphering the Inca
Melody of the Wind.
I have succeeded in
deciphering the Incan
Melody of the Wind.

Inca to Incan.

Gold Ship

Prototype Final USA
Tim: This is the
Inca Gold Ship?!
Will: This is the
Incan Gold Ship?!

Originally, Inca. Now, Incan.

Prototype Final USA
Look, look!
The King has returned!
Look, look!
The King has returned!
Prototype Final USA
Tim:
(I'm the King???)
And he's much shorter!

A rather significant change. The final replaced Will's thoughts with another sentence from the Incan. The "(I'm the King???)" text is shown after interacting with another Incan in both versions but not for this one in the final.

Prototype Final USA
The Queen is in her
stateroon. Please show
her that you're OK.
The Queen is in her
stateroom. Please show
her that you're OK.

The final fixed a typo.

Prototype Final USA
Through the darkness a
bright light is visible
in front of the cave...
Through the darkness, a
bright light is visible
in front of the cave...

The final fixed a grammatical error. As expected, a missing comma.

Prototype Final USA
Since then she has
thought of nothing
but him.
Since then, she has
thought of nothing
but him.

Aaaand again.

Prototype Final USA
As you were told,
until now I've been
guarding the Mystery
Doll of the Wind.
As you were told,
until now I've been
guarding the Mystic
Statue of the Wind.
Prototype Final USA
That's the statue you
were awarded
by the spirits.
That's the statue you
were awarded
by the spirits.
Prototype Final USA
It's in the jewel box in
the storehouse below,
look for yourself.
It's in the jewel box in
the storehouse below,
Look for yourself.

The Inca Queen refers to the Mystic Statues as the "Mystery Doll" in the prototype for some reason. The final is 1 out of 2 steps away from completely fixing the run-on sentence in the last text box.

Prototype Final USA
This is the King.
The Mystic Doll is
in this box.
The Mystic Statue is
in this box.

Everyone is referring to Will as the King instead of the Incan saying this, so it's no surprise the final omitted the first sentence. This Incan refers to the Mystic Statue as the Mystic Doll.

Prototype Final USA
It's a Mystic Doll! It's a Mystic Statue!

Another Doll to Statue change.

Prototype Final USA
Guard: King, look
there. The ship is
coming out of the cave!
Guard: Oh short King,
look there. The ship is
coming out of the cave!

The Guard on the crow's nest points out that Will is short in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Tim: I was in a deep
sleep, and was pulled
deep inside a dream.
Will: I fell into a
deep sleep, and was
pulled inside a dream.

The final words this text better.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: Wait. Don't call
it a strange town. I
was I was born there.
Lilly: Wait. Don't call
it strange. I
was born there.

The final fixed an error and omitted a word from the second sentence.

Prototype Final USA
Rob:
It's strange enough.
It's invisible.
Lance:
It's invisible.
Prototype Final USA
Tim. You can't
go on a journey
without telling us.
I'd call that pretty
strange.
Prototype Final USA
Since we're friends we
have to share good times
and bad.
Will. You can't
go on a journey
without telling us.
Prototype Final USA
Since we're friends, we
have to share good times
and bad.

The final spiced up Lance's dialogue a little and moved the changed text into its own text box.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: They perished
waiting for the
Inca King's return...
Kara: They perished
waiting for the
King's return...

The final dropped the word Inca.

Prototype Final USA
There's a gold ring
on her long slender
finger...
There's a gold ring
on her long, slender,
bony finger...

This text was changed to be more descriptive. The final added commas in between the adjectives.

Prototype Final USA
This is the shiniest
of all the artifacts.
This is the most valuable
of all the artifacts.

The prototype's text doesn't make the ring sound as valuable as it is.

Prototype Final USA
I want this ring.
It's so pretty, I
really like it.
I want the ring.
It's so pretty. I
really must have it.

The final fixes a run-on sentence and changed the text to show how much Kara wants the ring.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly:
Maybe it's Riverson!
Lilly:
Maybe it belongs to
Riverson!
Prototype Final USA
In this part of the ocean
there are fish that are
as dangerous as demons!!
In this part of the
ocean, there are fish
that are as dangerous
as, well, sharks!!

In the prototype, Lilly talks about what's attacking the ship. The final oddly changed it to talk about the ring. The final also toned down how dangerous Riverson is.

Prototype Final USA
A big fish ran into the
ship! Sob...
A huge, enormous, giant
fish ran into the ship!
Sob...

Riverson's size was emphasized more in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Morris has been eaten!
Sob...
He was swallowed!
Gulp...Sob...

Erik presents the situation a bit differently in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Eric: Aaaaah! That
fish again! We'll
be eaten!!
Erik: Aaaggh! It's that
fish again! We'll
all be dessert!

Same here.

Will's Dream

Prototype Final USA
Tim's Mother Shira:
Look in the sky. The
comet is so beautiful.
Will's Mother, Shira:
Look in the sky. The
comet is so beautiful.

A comma was added to show that Shira is Will's mother.

Prototype Final USA
Some say it's an
unlucky star, some
say it's a lucky star...
Some say it's an
unlucky star. Some
say it's a lucky star...

The final fixed the run-on sentence.

Adrift

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Of course. You
were unconscious for
more than half a day.
Kara: Of course, you
were unconscious for
more than half a day.

The two sentences were combined into one.

Prototype Final USA
Don't think about the
future, let's just enjoy
drifting.
Don't think about the
future. Let's just enjoy
drifting.

A run-on sentence was fixed.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Beautiful.... Kara: Beautiful....
Even after seeing it
all day, I still never
get tired of it.
Prototype Final USA
Even after seeing it
all day, I still never
get tired of it.

The final combined everything into one text box.

Prototype Final USA
Karen just stared at
the fish all day.
I couldn't stand it.
Kara just stared at
the fish all day.
Will couldn't stand it.
Prototype Final USA
I walked around on
the raft, and talked to
Karen many times.
He walked around on
the raft and talked to
Kara many times.
Prototype Final USA
A minute seemed like
forever. But I could
hear the march of time.
A minute seemed like
forever. But he could
hear the march of time.

The final changed the dialogue from first person to third person and removed a comma in the second text box.

Prototype Final USA
If anyone reads this
please save us...
                            Samas
If anyone reads this,
please save us...
                             Sam

Sam's name is "Samas" in the prototype. The final also added a comma. There is a pause before displaying Samas' name in the prototype that isn't present in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Tim: Karen didn't
say anything to me
all day.
Will: Kara didn't
say anything all day.

The final removed the fact that Kara's silence was directed at Will.

Prototype Final USA
Tim: Drifting.
First week.We saw
a school of fish....
Will: Drifting.
First week.
A school of fish....
Prototype Final USA
I've reached the end
of my rope.
He reached the end
of his rope.
Prototype Final USA
If I don't
eat more I think
I will starve...
If he didn't
eat more, he thought
he would starve...

The final once again changed the perspective of the dialogue to third person out of the blue.

Prototype Final USA
I found I was starting
to develop feelings
for Karen...
Will found that he was
starting to develop
feelings for Kara...

And...again!

Prototype Final USA
Karen: There seems to be
one extra star recently
near the constellation
of Cygnus.
Kara: There seems to be
one extra star near the
constellation of Cygnus

The prototype's text scrolls up to fit an extra line and stops after "recently" until the player progresses the text. The final also reworded the text a bit.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
We've been adrift for
almost 3 weeks now.
Kara:
We've been adrift for
almost three weeks now.

Another case of a number changed into its word form.

Prototype Final USA
We could be eaten....
What should we do...
We could be eaten....
What should we do?...

A question mark was added.

Prototype Final USA
Tim: Then what we're
doing is not like usual
human behavior.
Will: Then what we're
doing is not usual
human behavior.

A word was removed from the final.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: That's right.
They're going.
Goodbye, sharks...
Kara: That's right.
They're Going.
Good-bye, sharks...

A hyphen was added for unknown reasons.

Prototype Final USA
The sunset was so
beautiful from the
corridor of the castle..
The sunset was so
beautiful from the
corridor of the
castle...

The final added an additional line break, likely to fit the full ellipsis.

Prototype Final USA
After the sun has set
the darkness comes...
After the sun has set,
the darkness comes...

Another comma added in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Tim: Suddenly I fell
over, unconscious...
Will: Suddenly Will
fell over,
unconscious...

This is just silly; the final changes the perspective to third person but keeps the speaker's name, so now it looks like Will is talking to himself in third person.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
Tim!  Tim!!
What's wrong!!
Kara:
Will! Will!!
What's wrong!!

The final removed an extra space.

Diamond Coast

Prototype Final USA
When it gets worse the
blood gets bad and the
skin turns black.
When it gets worse, the
blood gets bad and the
skin turns black.

Comma addition.

Prototype Final USA
You should thank
the dog outside, he
found your raft and
came to get me.
You should thank
the dog outside, He
found your raft and
came to get me.

The final almost fixed the run-on sentence. Again.

Prototype Final USA
Man: This is the south
outskirts of Oakland.
Man: This is the south
outskirts of Oakton.
Prototype Final USA
The city of
Freesia is a half-day
to the north.
The city of
Freejia is half a day
to the north.

It looks like Oakland was around in the Age of Exploration in the prototype; the final renames it to Oakton. Freejia is called Freesia in the prototype, and the final removed the hyphen.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: At any rate,
let's go to Freesia.
Kara: At any rate,
let's go to Freejia.

Freesia to Freejia again.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: This dog's
name is Turbo.
A cute dog.
Kara: This dog's
name is Turbo.
Isn't he cute?

Kara asks Will if Turbo is cute in the final; in the prototype, she simply states he's cute.

Prototype Final USA
So they went to
Freesia....
So they went to
Freejia....

Freesia to Freejia, yet again

Freejia

Prototype Final USA
People who live in such
a pretty place must also
have beautiful hearts...
People who live in such
a pretty place must
have beautiful hearts...

The final removed a word.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
Don't you like it,Tim!!
Let's go! !
Kara:
Don't you like it, Will!
Let's go!!

The final added a space after the comma and removed one between the exclamation marks.

Prototype Final USA
The freesia is the city
flower. Smells good,
doesn't it?
The Freejia is the city
flower. Smells good,
doesn't it?

Freesia to Freejia once again, and the final also capitalized the city's name.

Prototype Final USA
I don't say bad things.
You'd better not go
on the back streets.
Listen to me carefully.
You'd better not go
on the back streets.

The first sentence was tidied up in the final.

Prototype Final USA
I learned how to
compress my body and
dive. I brought
you something.
Thanks for showing
me that impressive
dive. I will give
you something.

It doesn't make sense how the man could have learned that in the prototype since all he saw was Will land on the ground in front of his window. The final fixed this.

Prototype Final USA
This kid! If you do
something this dangerous
again, you'll be in
big trouble!!!
Kids! If you do
something this dangerous
again, you'll be in
big trouble!!!

The man scolds Will in the prototype and complains about childish behavior in the final.

Prototype Final USA
The old man secretly put
something in Tim's bags!
The old man secretly put
something in Will's
bags!

Due to Will's name being different and longer in the final, an additional line break had to be added.

Prototype Final USA
It wasn't like a robber
had come in.
It's not like a tornado
came through here.

The final removed the mention of a robber and replaced it with a tornado. The prototype's text is more fitting since Freejia has crime all over.

Prototype Final USA
I've tried not to think.
The more I think the
more empty I become...
I've tried not to think.
The more I think, the
more empty I become...

The prototype lacks a comma that was added in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
Lilly? Is it Lilly?!
Kara:
Lilly?
Is it Lilly?

The final added another line break.

Prototype Final USA
Rob's in the room on the
right, go in there...
Lance is in the room
on the right,
go in there...

The final removed the apostrophe since it's the way it's being used is a grammatical error.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
I finally met you
safely, but...
Kara:
I am glad everyone
is safe, but...

Kara is trying to say that she's glad Lance is safe in the prototype, but she ultimately fails to do so in a coherent way. The final changed it to show her gratitude towards everyone's safety.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: Rob hit his
head escaping from
the Inca ship...
Lilly: Lance hit his
head escaping from
the Incan ship...

The Inca to Incan change: in a new town this time.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: Also, I haven't
seen Eric since
last night.
Lilly: Also, I haven't
seen Erik since
last night.
Prototype Final USA
What's happened.... I wonder what's happened?

Lilly phrases her concern for Erik differently in each version.

Prototype Final USA
Soon a great king will
come from above... Then
mankind will die out.
Soon a great power will
come from above... Then
mankind will die out.

"king" was changed to "power" in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Please!
Let me go!
Please!
Don't tell!

Since Will now knows the location of the runaway laborer, the final made his response more fitting.

Prototype Final USA
I am Remas. Our game
disappeared and we had
nothing to eat.
I am Remus. Our game
disappeared and we had
nothing to eat.

Remas' name was changed to Remus in the final.

Prototype Final USA
I am Samus. I am Sam.

The prototype has inconsistent spelling for his name; first it was "Samas" and now it's "Samus." The final simply made his name Sam, which in turn fixed the inconsistencies.

Prototype Final USA
Tim? Is that Tim's
voice? Save me...   Bonk!
Will? Is that Will's
voice? Save me...  Bonk!

There's an extra space after the ellipsis in the prototype that was removed in the final. The final also added a pause before displaying the "Bonk!" text.

Prototype Final USA
The man ran away,
startled.
The man ran away,
scared.

The man was changed from being startled to scared.

Prototype Final USA
I'll tell you where,
please save them!
I'll tell you where.
Please save them!
Prototype Final USA
Tim asks the location
of the mine!
Will learns the
location of the mine!

The final fixed a run-on sentence in the first text box. The final's second text box makes more sense because Erik literally just said he was going to tell Will where the mine is.

Prototype Final USA
Eric: I met safely with
Tim's group, but I could
hardly cry for joy.
Erik: It is good to be
among friends again.
If only I wasn't so sad.

The final completely changed the text and fixed the Engrish.

Post Diamond Mine

Prototype Final USA
The most important thing
in my life was gone, I
didn't know what to do.
The most important thing
in my life was gone. I
didn't know what to do.

Another run-on sentence fix.

Prototype Final USA
Rob: What? What have I
been doing? What's
happened to everyone?
Lance: What? What have I
been doing? What's
Prototype Final USA
happened to everyone?

The final moved the rest of the text into a separate text box. The town music does not start up before this is said in the prototype but instead after all the cutscene text is over.

Prototype Final USA
Eric: Well, there's an
eccentric inventor in
the woods nearby.
Erik: Well, there's an
eccentric inventory in
the woods nearby.
Shall we go?
Prototype Final USA
Shall we go? I think his name
is Neil...
Prototype Final USA
I think his name
is Neil...

The final merged the first and second textboxes.

Diamond Mine

Prototype Final USA
Tim:
The Diamond Mine was
quiet as a tomb.
Will:
The Diamond Mine was
as quiet as a tomb.
Prototype Final USA
A chill ran down my
spine when I heard the
screams from the
back of the cave.
A chill ran down Will's
spine when he heard the
screams from the
back of the cave.

A missing word was added in the first text box. The second again was changed to be in a third-person perspective for the final; like the Adrift instance, Will is the speaker so this doesn't make much sense.

Prototype Final USA
There are 8 laborers
including me forced to
work in the mine.
Please save us.
There are eight
laborers including me
forced to work in the
mine.
Prototype Final USA
Please save us.

Due to the number eight being changed to word form, another text box was added to fit the remaining text.

Prototype Final USA
Of course it would blow
fine hair like yours
around. Then you'll
understand.
Of course, it would blow
fine hair like yours
around. Then you'll
understand.

The final added a comma.

Prototype Final USA
Without both keys
the door won't open...
Without both keys,
the door won't open...

Another comma.

Prototype Final USA
Imas: Thank you.
All living things in our
home country have
gotten strange.
Imas: Thank you.
All living things in our
home country have
grown strange.
Prototype Final USA
People have turned to
stone, some are sick
with unknown diseases...
People have turned to
stone. Some are sick
with unknown diseases...

Better wording in the first text box. The run-on sentence in the second text box was fixed.

Prototype Final USA
Remus: Thank you. Our
home village is far away
across the ocean.
Remus: Thank you. Our
home village is far
across the ocean.

A word was omitted to improve readability.

Prototype Final USA
Samus:
Cut the chain!
Sam:
Cut the chain!

Name differences.

Prototype Final USA
Samus:
Thank you.
Sam:
Thank you.
Prototype Final USA
I heard from Eric that
your friend has lost
his memory.
I heard from Erik that
your friend has lost
his memory.
Prototype Final USA
Legend says that there
is a song that brings
back the past. Please
let him hear it.
Legend says that there
is a song that brings
back the past. Please
let him hear it.
Prototype Final USA
Samas hums a
strange melody.
Sam hums a
strange melody.

Name differences again. The prototype introduces another inconsistency in Sam's name...in the same series of text boxes!

Prototype Final USA
Samas:
I need a favor...
Sam:
I need a favor...

Yet another name difference.

Neil's Cottage

Prototype Final USA
There's a wonderful
smell here in
this room, isn't there?
There's a wonderful
smell in this room,
isn't there?

The final omitted a redundant word.

Prototype Final USA
When you're wrapped up
in inventing something
you don't care
about your appearance.
When you're wrapped up
in inventing something,
you don't care
about your appearance.
Prototype Final USA
I don't think the smell
is that bad. Not
enough to hate me for.
I don't think the smell
is that bad. Not enough
to hate me for it.

Localization knew commas were invented, so they added one where it belongs. They also added an earlier line break and another word in the second text box.

Prototype Final USA
Rob: I've only had mine
on for 3 weeks.
I guess I lose!
Lance: I've only had mine
on for three weeks.
I guess I lose!

Number to word form again.

Prototype Final USA
With this you can
breathe underwater, but
there's only 1 minute's
worth of air inside.
With this you can
breathe underwater, but
there's only one minute's
worth of air inside.
Prototype Final USA
Compressing the air
would let you stay
underwater longer, but
I don't know how.
Compressing the air
would let you stay
underwater longer, but
I don't know how to do it.

Number to word yet again. The prototype's second text box makes it sound like Neil doesn't know how compressing the air lets you stay underwater longer. The final clarified that Neil doesn't know how to compress the air.

Prototype Final USA
When I used it the
eyes turned bright red
like a rabbit.
When I used it, the
eyes turned bright red
like a rabbit's.

Another comma added. The final compared the camera lens to a rabbit's eye instead of the rabbit itself.

Prototype Final USA
Tim tells Neil about
hearing his father's
voice,
Will tells Neil about
hearing his father's
voice, and visiting
Prototype Final USA
and visiting the world's ruins in
his search to
find the Mystic Statues.
Prototype Final USA
the world's ruins in
his search to
find the Mystery Dolls.

The text boxes are laid out oddly in the prototype, which was fixed for the final. The prototype still can't make up its mind on whether it wants to call them Mystic Dolls, Mystery Dolls, or Mystic Statues.

Prototype Final USA
Neil:
That's right!
You know a lot!!
Neil:
That's right!
You know a lot! !
Prototype Final USA
The red star in Cygnus,
Tim's interest in ruins,
The red star in Cygnus,
Will's interest in ruins.

The final erroneously added a space between the final two exclamation marks. The final replaced the comma with a period in the second text box, but neither version has correct grammar.

Prototype Final USA
Fortunately, the Naska
ground paintings are
a week's walk east
of here.
Fortunately, the Nazca
ground paintings are
a week's walk east
of here.

Naska was changed to Nazca. We'll likely be seeing more of those.

Prototype Final USA
Rob:
We're going, too!
Lance: We're going, too!

The final removed the line break.

Prototype Final USA
The group went to the
Naska Desert...
The group went to the
Nazca Desert...

Naska to Nazca. Called it.

Nazca Plain

Prototype Final USA
This is the most famous
of the ground paintings,
the Condor. Have you
ever heard of it?
This is the most famous
of the ground paintings--
the Condor. Have you
ever heard of it?

The comma was replaced by two hyphens.

Prototype Final USA
Tim:
Naska is huge, so
don't go too far....
Will:
Nazca is huge, so
don't go too far....

Naska was changed to Nazca again.

Prototype Final USA
Eric:
Scary... I'll stay
with Neil.
Erik:
It's scary... I'll stay
with Neil.

The final added an additional word at the start.

Prototype Final USA
Maybe the ancient Naska
people ran the 100 yard
dash here.
Maybe the ancient Nazca
people ran the 100 yard
dash here.

Yup, this again.

Prototype Final USA
Eric:
What's going to
happen... It's exciting!
Erik:
What's going to
happen? It's exciting!

The final made the question an actual question.

Prototype Final USA
The Mystery Doll Tim
spoke of is somewhere
on this plain?
The Mystic Statue that
Will spoke of is
somewhere on this
plain?

Mystery Doll was changed to Mystic Statue. The final added an additional word and another line break to fit everything.

Prototype Final USA
When we look at it we
see Cygnus, but ancient
people probably just
saw a condor ...
When we look at it, we
see Cygnus, but ancient
people probably just
saw a condor...

More commas were added, and a space before the ellipsis was removed.

Prototype Final USA
Neil:  Of course!
Cygnus has 9 stars, and
there are 9 stones...
Neil: Of course!
Cygnus has nine stars,
and there are nine
stones...

The final removed an extra space after the speaker's name. More number to word changes.

Prototype Final USA
When Tim's Flute
touched it, there
was a huge sound!
When Will's Flute
touched it, there
was a rumbling sound!

The type of sound was made more descriptive.

Sky Garden

Prototype Final USA
Tim: There's a strange
garden floating in the
sky over Naska...
Will: There's a strange
garden floating in the
sky over Nazca...
Prototype Final USA
On the ground Neil and
his group look like
grains of rice going
to and fro.
On the ground, Neil and
my friends look like
tiny ants going
back and forth.

Naska to Nazca, a comma was added, and most of the second text box was rewritten.

Prototype Final USA
There are 4 Crystal
Balls in 4 locations.
Find each one in
clockwise order...
There are four Crystal
Balls in four locations.
Find each one in
clockwise order...

Number to word.

Prototype Final USA
Moon Tribe: Drop off the
cliff at the front and
back, and there's an
up-side down world...
Moon Tribe: Drop off the
cliff at the front and
back to find the
up-side down world...

Confusing text was made slightly less confusing.

Prototype Final USA
Defeating the huge bird,
the body gives you
a Mystic Doll!!
You have defeated the,
huge demon!
Look! A Mystic Statue!!

The prototype calls the Viper, the boss of Sky Garden, a huge bird. The final just calls it a huge demon and accidentally keeps the comma that was there previously. Mystic Doll was changed to Mystic Statue.

Post Sky Garden Cutscene

Prototype Final USA
Over the sound of the
propeller, Neil's voice
comes shouting from
a loudspeaker!
A strange noise fills
the air around you.
From out of nowhere,
you hear Neil's voice!

Neil doesn't have a loudspeaker, and it doesn't make sense for his voice to shout, so the final fixed those and made everything else more coherent.

Prototype Final USA
Neil:
Tim! We're close
to the ground!!!!
Neil:
Will! You're falling
to the ground!!!!

Neil's dialogue was changed to sound more urgent.

Prototype Final USA
Neil:
Shoot!!
I made a mistake!!
Neil:
Shoot!!
I dropped a contact!!

Neil has an excuse for mistiming catching Will the first time in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: You fool!!!
Tim has taken his
last breath!
Kara: You what!!!
Idiot! Will is
doomed for sure now!

Kara's response was changed accordingly. The prototype is still inaccurate since while Will is in peril, he's still alive.

Prototype Final USA
Rob: Neil! It's still
a little ways to the
ground.  Once more!
Lance: Neil! It's still
a little ways to the
ground.  Try again!

Minor changes to Lance's dialogue here.

Prototype Final USA
Neil:
Good!
Next time you'll see!!
Neil:
Okay!
I'll get him this time!!

Some interesting changes to Neil's dialogue. The prototype makes it sound like he's irritated at the others.

Prototype Final USA
Neil:
It was a narrow escape.
Neil:
That was a close one!

The whole thing was rewritten to be more relevant for the current situation in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: But you were
great. Using something
like that.
Lilly: Neil, you were
great. This invention
saved Will's life!

Lilly's dialogue is incredibly vague in the prototype. The final makes it clear what exactly she's talking about.

Prototype Final USA
I'll take you to the
next ruins the same way.
We should try and
locate the next ruins.

The prototype's dialogue makes it sound like Neil knows exactly where the next ruins are.

Prototype Final USA
I guess there's no such
thing as a perfect
human being.
I guess nobody's
perfect,  including
Neil.

The final's text was changed to be directed at Neil.

Seaside Palace

Prototype Final USA
Tim: Next thing I knew
I was standing in a
huge palace.
The next thing he knew,
Will was standing in a
huge palace.
Prototype Final USA
I couldn't remember
anything since my water
landing...
Will: I couldn't
remember anything since
my water landing...
Prototype Final USA
Is everyone safe? Is everyone safe?

The final changed the first text box from first person to third person, added a comma, and moved the speaker's text to the second text box.

Prototype Final USA
Tim: Something's odd.
Even if I touch it
no damage shows...
Will: That's odd.
Even if I touch it
no damage occurs...

Mostly minor changes.

Prototype Final USA
Strange Voice:
This is the palace where
the vampires live...
Strange Voice:
This is the Palace of
Vampires...

The final gave the palace a better name.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: Hey...
Don't startle me!!
Lilly: Hey...
You scared me!!
Prototype Final USA
It's all your fault my
heart's in my throat!!
I practically had a
heart attack!!

Lilly is startled in the prototype but scared in the final. The final worded the second text box better.

Prototype Final USA
Let's do it together.
We don't know what
will happen.
Let's stick together.
We don't know what
will happen.

The final clarified what Lilly wanted to do.

Prototype Final USA
Strange Voice: The
Purification Stone.  .  .
in the castle .  .,ED
Strange Voice: The
Purification Stone...
in the castle...
Prototype Final USA
Tim: What? A sign of
life from the
right-hand room...

This text box is completely messed up in the prototype. Aside from the many redundant spaces, you have only one or two frames to glimpse the full text before it automatically moves onto the next text box. The final fixes all the issues with it.

However, while the text for the second text box is used in both versions, the trigger for both text boxes is in the same spot in the prototype! This might explain why the first text box automatically progresses. The final removed the trigger for the second text box in this instance, as there's no right-hand room on this floor.

Prototype Final USA
I could get in through
the hole. Should I
have a look?
I could get in through
the hole. I better
have a look.

Lilly asks a question in the prototype while she states what she's going to do in the final.

Prototype Final USA
You've got the
Purification Stone!
You've found the
Purification Stone!

Minor change.

Prototype Final USA

I was brought to this
palace from Freejia and
changed to a demon...

Freesia to Freejia.

Prototype Final USA
You know, I felt the
moment of death.  I
hadn't realized that
death was so scary...
I know now what
it feels like to be
close to death.
Death is terrifying!
Prototype Final USA
You are so innocent.
But  I wonder if the
animals we eat for food
feel that way.
I wonder if the
animals we eat feel the
same way I felt right
before death.

Most of this woman's dialogue was greatly revised in the final to improve readability.

Prototype Final USA
The man sleeping in
this coffin is surely a

The man sleeping in
this coffin is surely a
vampire. They're
plotting something...

A space was added after the first sentence.

Prototype Final USA
A vampire couple lives
in these coffins.
A vampire couple lives
in the coffins.

There is no coffin near this man, so the final changed the text. Perhaps he was originally intended to be near them?

Prototype Final USA
We were almost changed
to demons. I'm afraid of
what might have happened
if you had come later...
We were almost changed
into demons. I'm afraid of
what might have happened
if you had come later...

Minor change.

Prototype Final USA
I overheard the vampires
say that the doll called
the Mystery Doll can
be found in Mu.
I overheard the vampires
say something like
the Mystic Statue can
be found in Mu.

Mystic Statue. Mystic Doll. Mystery Doll. The confusion never ends; localization must have had fun.

Prototype Final USA
You've got the key to
the seaside palace!
You received the key to
the Seaside Palace!

The final mentioned someone gave you the key and capitalized the name of the palace.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly spoke from
his pocket.
Lilly spoke from
his pocket.

Shown after using the Palace Key to open the door. While the text is the same, the prototype uses Will's color text while the final uses Lilly's color text.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: A passageway...
I wonder if it goes
clear to Mu...
Lilly: A passageway...
I wonder if it goes
clear to Mu?

The final replaced the ellipsis with a question mark on a phrase that isn't an actual question.

Mu

Prototype Final USA
They will probably

thousands of years...
They will probably
welcome us after waking
from a sleep of
thousands of years...

The final removed a comma!

Prototype Final USA
Meditation Room Room of hope

Interestingly, the prototype calls the Room of Hope the Meditation Room. Considering the Statue of Hope's select menu name is Prayer Statue in the prototype, this makes a lot of sense and reveals the removal of a religious reference.

Prototype Final USA
Doesn't this statue
look like it's staring
at something?
It appears as if
the treasure chest is
in the exact spot where
Prototype Final USA
The lines of vision of
the statues meet at
that treasure chest.
the line of vision
between both the
statues cross.
Prototype Final USA
The other statue is also
staring at something.
Maybe I worry too much.
I wonder if this is
suppose to mean
something? Maybe not?

Lilly's hint was completely rewritten for the final.

Prototype Final USA
You've found the
Hope Statue!
The Hope Statue...
Was there another room
with the same name...?
You've found the
Statue of Hope!
The Statue of Hope...
Was there a room
with the same name...?

The Statue of Hope is called the Hope Statue in the prototype. The last sentence was rewritten because the player encounters only one Room of Hope at this point.

Prototype Final USA
You've found the Hope
Statue! But your
inventory is full!
You've found the Statue
of Hope! But your
inventory is full!

Same Hope Statue to Statue of Hope change here.

Prototype Final USA
It looks like we can get
down from somewhere.
It looks like we can now
explore new areas.

Lilly says this after putting in the first Statue of Hope and going outside. Her hint was made less vague.

Prototype Final USA
You've found the
Hope Statue!
The Hope Statue...
Was there another room
with the same name...?
You've found the
Statue of Hope!
The Statue of Hope...
Was there aanother room
with the same name...?

The same Hope Statue to Statue of Hope change when obtaining the second Statue of Hope. This time, it kept "another" at the end because the player already encountered a Room of Hope.

Prototype Final USA
It looks like a cemetery
of the Mu people.
This looks like an
ancient burial ground
for the people of Mu.

The final got the same message across in a more interesting way.

Prototype Final USA
Go ahead and stare.
You can probably see
wandering spirits.
If you look closely,
You can probably see
wandering spirits.

The text was changed to make more sense but erroneously kept the "Y" capitalized.

Prototype Final USA
Family and friends

before our eyes.We
fought through tears...
Family and friends
turned to monsters
before our eyes. We
fought back the tears.

The spirit says they fought through the tears in the prototype and fought back the tears in the final. A space was also added after the first sentence.

Prototype Final USA
Many couldn't take it,
and thought we should
flee from here.
Some couldn't take it,
and thought we should
flee from here.

The prototype better emphasizes how much more desperate the situation was. The improperly placed comma was still kept in the final.

Prototype Final USA
We saw no point in
living if this thing
continued...
Many saw no point in
living if this thing
continued...

Same desperation change. The final overall tones down text relating to misfortune.

Prototype Final USA
Please take this
Mystic Doll.
Please take this
Mystic Statue.

Yup, this again.

Prototype Final USA
Eric:
Heeeeelp!
Someone save me!!
Erik:
Heeeeelp!!
Someone save me! !

The final added another exclamation mark and a space between the last two exclamation marks.

Prototype Final USA
Vampire Man:

Mystic Statue!
Prototype Final USA
I thought the guy who

right to let him go.
I thought that guy who
came to the palace was
strange....We were
right to let him go.

Oh boy, this again. Interestingly, the prototype mentions whether the male or female vampire is talking in a different way. Minor changes to the second text box.

Prototype Final USA
Vampire Woman:
What are you saying?
You were drooling
when he was here!
Vampiress:
What are you saying?
You were drooling
when he was here!
Prototype Final USA
You're always like that
when young ones come!
Is food all you
think about?
You're always like that
when young ones come!
All you ever think about
is food!

The Vampiress is called Vampire Woman in the prototype. The second text box was modified slightly.

Prototype Final USA
Vampire Man:
You,  too!!
Vampire:
So do you!!

This was touched up a bit in the final.

Prototype Final USA
First let's get that
Mystic Doll!
Get ready!!!
First, let's get that
Mystic Statue!
Get ready!!!

Mystic Doll to Mystic Statue. A comma was added (after quite a while!).

Prototype Final USA
First defuse the bomb!
Hurry! Hurry!
First, defuse the bomb!
Hurry! Hurry!

A comma was added here too.

Prototype Final USA

The final added more periods.

Prototype Final USA

with whom they lived.
Prototype Final USA

Others remaining under

The wording was adjusted.

Prototype Final USA
Neil: If we go through
the tunnel maybe we can
reach the mainland.
Neil: If we go through
the tunnel, maybe we
can reach the mainland.

A comma was added and a line break was moved earlier.

Prototype Final USA
Rob: Good! If it's
decided, let's go now!!
Lance: Good idea!
Let's get out of here!!

Lance takes more initiative in the final.

Seaside Tunnel

Prototype Final USA
Five days have passed

Five days have passed

the tunnel.
Prototype Final USA

The same scenery goes
on and on. It's hard to
keep track of time...

Will's thought about losing consciousness was rewritten to mention keeping track of time.

Prototype Final USA
Neil:
Let's try to
rest here today,
Neil:
Let's rest here
today.

Neil says to try to rest in the prototype whereas he suggests resting in the final. The comma was replaced with a period to correctly finish the sentence.

Prototype Final USA
Eric: I'm tired.
I must have walked
500 miles today.
Erik: I'm so tired.
I must have walked
500 miles today.

Erik has slightly more emphasis on how tired he is in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Rob:
It's crazy for people
to walk so far.
Lance:
This is crazy!
Having to walk so far!

Lance's text was changed to be more specific to the party's situation.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Stop!! You've
been tired ever since
we started this trip.
Kara: Enough!! You've
been tired ever since
we started this trip.

Minor changes.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: We're all
thinking it, you don't
have to say it!
Lilly: Lance's right, Kara
I think all of us feel the
same way!

An interesting change. Lilly focuses solely on lashing out at Kara in the prototype whereas she agrees with Lance in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly:
People are strange...
Lilly:
People are strange...
Prototype Final USA
When you have to, you
can tell which are
edible and which are
poison at a glance.
I am afraid the longer
we travel in this tunnel,
the easier it will be to
forget why we are here.
Prototype Final USA
Maybe all ancient
peoples were that way.
Maybe all ancient
people were that way.

In the prototype, Lilly talks about the mushrooms in the second text box which makes it sound like she's promoting cannibalism. The second text box was rewritten entirely, and a minor change was made in the third text box.

Prototype Final USA
My skin has gotten dry
from eating only
strange food...
My skin has gone dry
from eating
weird food...

More relatively minor changes. Kara mentions she's only been eating strange food in the prototype.

Prototype Final USA
Somehow when I think
of the distant past I
feel so insignificant.
Somehow, when I think
of the distant past, I
feel so insignificant.

A grand total of two commas were added in the final.

Prototype Final USA

boiled mushroom.
Yesterday baked
mushroom.
Prototype Final USA
Before that, raw.
Awfully tasteless...
The day before,
boiled mushroom.
Prototype Final USA
We can't ask too much.
I'll do it to live,
we have to eat...
Before that, raw.
Awfully tasteless...
Prototype Final USA
We can't ask too much.
I'll do it to live.
We have to eat...

The second sentence in the first text box was moved into its own text box in the final, causing the final to have an extra text box. The grammar from the prototype's third text box was improved in the final's fourth text box.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Oh, no!
Tim has found
mushrooms again...
Kara: Oh, no!
Will found more
mushrooms...

The prototype's text actually seems more fitting here.

Prototype Final USA
In this way another day
passed slowly...
In this way, another day
passed slowly...

However, the prototype's cutscenes are always missing commas.

Prototype Final USA
Unable to sleep,
I stared at an
underground river.....
Unable to sleep.
I stared at an
underground river.....

The comma was replaced with a period.

Prototype Final USA
Tim: No.
I'm hungry.
No, just kidding.
Will: No.
I'm looking for more
mushrooms, just kidding.

Will's joke was touched up in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Somehow you've
become an adult.
Somehow you've
grown up.

Will clearly isn't an adult yet, so the text was changed to reflect his personal growth.

Prototype Final USA
The change in my body
seems to have started
when my father went
to the Tower of Babel.
The change seems to
have started when my
father went to the
Tower of Babel.

More polished text again.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: At first it was
just for fun, but now
it's a secret. Heh heh.
Lilly: At first it was
just for fun. But now
it's a secret. Heh heh.

Another comma to period replacement.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Wait.
I hear it again!!
What is that sound...
Kara: Wait.
I hear it again!!
What is that sound...?

A question mark was added at the end.

Prototype Final USA
Eric:
Maybe Riverson...?
Erik:
Maybe it's Riverson...?

A word was added.

Prototype Final USA
The length of the
sound becomes words.
The length of the
sound indicates letters.

The final is more accurate about how Morse Code works.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly:
Shh. Quiet!
Neil continues.
Lilly:
Shh. Quiet!
Neil continues.

The text is the same, but there is a pause before the last sentence in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Carry on, please figure

comet and the ruins...
You must figure
out this riddle of the
comet and the ruins...

Seth's dialogue was changed slightly.

Prototype Final USA
Well,

Well,

Angel Village

Prototype Final USA
Neil: We're here
at last.
Neil: We're here
at last. We've walked
through the tunnel for
almost a month...
Prototype Final USA
We've walked
through the tunnel for
almost a month...

The final merged the two text boxes.

Prototype Final USA
Rob:
What? A notice board!
Lance:
Look! A sign!

The notice board was changed to a sign, as it looks more like a sign in-game.

Prototype Final USA
Neil: Angels live in a
place like this...
Neil: Angels living
in a place like this?

Once again, the final replaces ellipsis with a question mark.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: What!
(Let's go, Tim).
Kara: What!
Will! Come with me!
Prototype Final USA
Tim, what are you
grinning about?
What are you grinning about?
Prototype Final USA
I'll explore this place
myself. Don't
try to come with me!
I'll explore this place
myself. Don't
try to follow me!

An interesting change. Kara whispers to Will in the prototype, while she tells him to come with her out loud in the final. Minor changes to the other text boxes.

Prototype Final USA
Rob:
Always a lady's
whim. Leave him alone.
Lance:
Maybe she's just tired.
Let her be for now.

Lance refers to Kara as a male in the prototype. This was fixed in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Tim: But you've spent
a lot of time together.
It's only natural.
Will: But you've spent
a lot of time together.
It seems only natural.

A word was added.

Prototype Final USA
Tim: Of course
something she'd wear
would be nice.
Will: Of course,
something she'd wear
would be nice.
Prototype Final USA
When she sees it she'd
think of you.
When she sees it, she'll
think of you.

The final added commas and changed the tense of a word.

Prototype Final USA
Rob: It might be too
sudden, but if you think
it's OK I'll try it.
Lance: It might be too
sudden, but if you think
it's OK, I'll try it.

More commas were added.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: Angels live in
such a dark place? It
feels so gloomy...
Lilly: Why do angels
live in such a dark
place? Feels so gloomy.

Lilly's question was phrased to be more like an actual question. A word was omitted from the last sentence to fit everything.

Prototype Final USA
Eric: The sun was really
bright. I'd never
noticed that before.
Erik: The sun is really
bright. I never
noticed that before.

The final fixed the tense Erik speaks in.

Prototype Final USA
Angel City Entrance
Angel Village Entrance

On top of the added line break, the final changed Angel City to Angel Village.

Prototype Final USA
This is the Angel
Village.
This is the Angel
Village. If our bodies
are exposed to the sun
for long, we'll perish.
Prototype Final USA
If our bodies
are exposed to the sun
for long we'll perish.

Text boxes were merged and commas were added; it was a good day.

Prototype Final USA
It's also been said that
we are the form that
humans evolved into.
It's been said that
we are the form into
which humans evolve.

The text was reworded slightly.

Prototype Final USA
But when I look at the
ocean my heart aches.
But when I look at the
ocean, my heart aches.

A comma was added for the final.

Prototype Final USA
I dance to have feelings
like a human, but
nothing changes...
I dance to remember
what it feels like to be
human. But...

The final changed the dialogue; the prototype reveals what this Angel woman is trying to say.

Prototype Final USA
But the model in the
painting was later lost.
But the model in the
painting was lost.

A word was omitted.

Prototype Final USA
After that, people
wanting to be drawn
flocked here.
After that, people
wanting to be painted
flocked here.

Ishtar doesn't draw; he paints. The final fixed this.

Prototype Final USA
The person I danced with
is now in that picture.
I used to dance with the
person in that picture.

This text box was modified possibly to avoid revealing what Ishtar does with his paintings.

Prototype Final USA
Once a human woman named
Karen came here.
Once a human woman
named Kara came here.

Aside from the name difference, the final placed the line break earlier.

Prototype Final USA
It's also been said that
we are the form that
humans evolved into.
I'll show you the way to
the studio. Remember it.
Prototype Final USA
Go with the wind.
Prototype Final USA
If you look at which
way the torch flame
bends,
you'll understand.
Prototype Final USA
Down the dark street,
through where the wind
blows, to where you can
hear the waterfall.
Prototype Final USA
Then look for the place
where the sound of the
waterfall is loud.
Prototype Final USA
Ishtar's studio is
in front. Be careful.

This NPC says generic text that several NPCs share in Angel Village. In the final, the NPC provides hints to Ishtar's studio.

Prototype Final USA
Tim: There's no
consciousness, like the
spirit's drawn out...
Will: She appears to be
sleeping. It's like the
spirit's drawn out...

The final toned down the morbidity; this Angel is very clearly exposed to the sun, so there's a high chance it's dying.

Prototype Final USA
Do you know
the painter Ishtar?
 Yes
 No
Do you know
the painter, Ishtar?
 Yes
 No

A comma was added again.

Prototype Final USA
You should listen to
everyone's conversation.
You should speak
with everyone.

The text was made more direct about what you should do.

Prototype Final USA
But in front creatures
with hate in their
hearts are writhing.
But in front, creatures
with hate in their
hearts are waiting.

Aside from the comma, the last word was changed.

Prototype Final USA
Ishtar: I wonder if they
brought Karen back.
Ishtar: I wonder if you're
here to get Kara.
Prototype Final USA
Go into this room. If
you solve all the riddles
I'll give back the girl.
Go into this room.
Prototype Final USA
If you solve all the
riddles, I'll give back
the girl.

Ishtar's first text box makes no sense at all in the prototype, given the context. The second text box's second sentence was moved into a new text box to fit the comma.

Prototype Final USA
When you've learned it
leave the room.
When you've learned it,
leave the room.

A comma was added.

Prototype Final USA
Tim: It's terrible!
So awful!!
Will: Kara!!
You make me so mad!!
Prototype Final USA
Stop bothering people
all the time!!
You are not the only
person on this journey!

Quite a drastic change. It was changed to be more specific to the situation in the final.

Prototype Final USA
Tim: Naturally! It's a
big mistake to think you
can control everything!!
Will: Naturally! It's a
mistake to think you
can control everything!!

Due to Will's longer name in the final, the word "big" was omitted to fit everything.

Prototype Final USA
When I'm far away I feel
close to it.
When I'm far away, I feel
close to it.
Prototype Final USA
When I'm close
I feel far away.
I realize that now...
When I'm close,
I feel far away.
I realize that now...

More commas.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
Tim scolded me
about that.
Kara:
Will already yelled
at me about that.

The text box was rewritten.

Prototype Final USA
Neil: She understands
now, we should
forgive her.

now. We should
forgive her.

City, many houses
are built on rafts.

Commas again.

Prototype Final USA
Eric: OK. I think I saw
a Red Jewel
in the Angel Village.

a Red Jewel
in the Angel Village.

The first sentence was removed.

Prototype Final USA
Rob: Lilly will have her
birthday while we're in
the Floating City...
Lance:
Lilly will have her
birthday while we're in
the Floating City...

A line break was added.

Prototype Final USA
Neil: Can I go now?
 Yes
 Wait a minute
Neil: Can we go now?
 Yes
 Wait a minute

Neil's not the only one leaving, so the final fixed that.

Watermia

Prototype Final USA
Freesia was the same
way, but beautiful
things always have
another side to them...
Freejia was the same
way, but beautiful.
Things always have
another side to them...

A minor but interesting change that places more emphasis on the last statement.

Prototype Final USA
Neil: The house on this
raft is a hint to a new
invention...
Neil: The house on this
raft gives me an idea
for a new invention.

The prototype makes it sound like the house was placed to give Neil a hint for a new invention. The final changed it to say that Neil has an idea for a new invention based on what he's seen.

Prototype Final USA
Go outside and look
behind the house. I feel
a little guilty but ...
Go outside and look
behind the house. I feel
a little guilty, but ...

A comma was added in the last sentence.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: I heard that
Rob saw someone he
knew in the town.
Lilly: I heard that
Lance saw someone he
knew in town.

Aside from the name change, a word was excluded.

Prototype Final USA
X Month  X Day
After a long journey we
arrive in the Floating
City, Watermia.
X Month X Day
After a long journey we
arrive in the Floating
City, Watermia.

A space was removed in the first line.

Prototype Final USA
Kyaah!! ... kyaah!!... Kyaah!!... kyaah!!...

Even the Kruks have changes in their dialogue, though minor.

Prototype Final USA
Rob's father:
I went on an expedition
with Olman.
If was scary but fun.
Lance's father:
I went on an expedition
with Olman.
It was scary, but fun.

I'll take seconds on the comma, please.

Prototype Final USA
Rob: He seems to have
lost his memory...
Lance: He seems to have
lost his memory.

The ellipsis was removed, making it sound more bland, given the situation.

Prototype Final USA
Child: If you're bitten
by a snake you should
run around like crazy
and he'll let go.
Child: If you're bitten
by a snake, you should
run around like crazy
and he'll let go.

Yup, another comma.

Prototype Final USA
Nana: We haven't
heard from your father
since his last letter
six months ago...
Nana: We haven't
heard from our father
since his last letter
six months ago...

Nana and Sabas don't even know Will, let alone his father, so this was fixed.

Prototype Final USA
The crazy old man came
here two years ago. He
just talked on about
the Tower of Babel.
A crazy old man came
here two years ago. He
just talked on about
the Tower of Babel.

"The" was changed to "A" in the first sentence.

Prototype Final USA
They say his body fluids
can cure anything.
They say fluid from it's
body can cure anything.

The text box was rewritten slightly but introduced possession where it didn't belong.

Prototype Final USA
He was with the explorer
Olman on his expedition
to the Tower of Babel.
He was with the explorer,
Olman, on his
expedition to the
Tower of Babel.

Two commas and a line break were added.

Prototype Final USA
Child: We
drink this water,
cook with it,
wash with it.
Child:
We drink this water,
cook with it,
wash with it.

A line break was moved earlier.

Prototype Final USA
Man: This animal
is called a Kruk.
Man:
This animal is called
a Kruk.

Same change here. Another line break was added as well.

Prototype Final USA
Lilly: Huh?
What's that?
Lilly: Huh?
I wonder what?
Prototype Final USA
Lilly:
Sorry.
Let's go.
Lilly:
Excuse me everyone.
I'll be right back. .

Minor changes to the first text box to fit the situation better. Lilly's second text box makes no sense in the current context in the prototype, so it was changed.

Prototype Final USA
That day Lilly didn't
come back to her room.
That day, Lilly didn't
come back to her room.

Commas again.

Prototype Final USA
When I awoke Rob
had disappeared...
When I awoke, Lance
had disappeared...

Neil: If you go
west of here, there's
a huge desert.
Prototype Final USA

A comma was added in the first text box and removed in the second.

Prototype Final USA

The way the man asks the question is a little different.

Prototype Final USA

Tonight, some young man
will lose his life...

A comma was added.

Prototype Final USA

Opponent:
Shoot! I forgot my
lucky Kruk's foot.
Prototype Final USA
The rules are simple.

The rules are simple.
One of the five glasses
contains poison.

The first text box was rewritten because this is the first time Will ever plays Russian Glass. The second text box had a number to word change.

Prototype Final USA
Opponent:
Waaaaaah!!
Opponent:
BAAANZAII!!

The Opponent's reaction to drinking a glass was changed.

Prototype Final USA
Tim:
I closed my eyes and
drank it in one gulp!
Will:
Will closed his eyes and
drank it in one gulp!

The localizers' once again overlooked a character talking out loud about him or herself in third person!

Prototype Final USA
Opponent: No...
I'm the underdog, I
will not be disgraced.
Opponent: No...
I'm the champion. I
will not be disgraced.

The prototype's text is hilarious; underdog was changed to champion, and the run-on sentence was fixed.

Prototype Final USA
Ignoring the spectator,
he drinks the glass.
Ignoring the spectator,
he downs the drink
in a shot.

This dialogue was changed to add more detail in how he drinks the glass.

Prototype Final USA
Eric:
Here's where Rob and

Prototype Final USA
Of course I don't feel

After entering Euro once

Prototype Final USA
Tim gets a Red Jewel! Will gets a Red Jewel!

Name differences aside, like with Ann's text in Euro, the prototype shows this message in Lance's yellow text as if he's speaking. The final shows it in the neutral text color often used when you use or get an item (fix color if needed).

Great Wall of China

Prototype Final USA
The defeated Sand
Fanger gives
up a Mystic Doll!

attacked by a demon!
What if you'd been
attacked!

Lilly's text was made more general.

Neil:
To live for yourself or

Natives' Village

Prototype Final USA
The statue of the girl

The statue of a girl
stands silently.

All the girls turned to stone have the prototype's text when inspecting them except the leftmost one in the final. It must have been overlooked when they considered changing it.

be so noisy...

Wait was changed into what and made a question.

very hungry...

The final changed the text to indicate that the natives are hungry.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Look. Those

Prototype Final USA
Tim: That's right...

Will: That's right...
The servant boy said
that in Freejia.
Prototype Final USA

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Those bones are the
bodies of people who've
been frighten to death.
Kara: Those bones are the
bodies of people who've
starved to death.

Given the context, there's no reason for Kara to think what she does in the prototype. The final fixed it.

Prototype Final USA
Karen: Peggy...
Such a sad look...
Kara: Hamlet...
Why such a sad look?
Prototype Final USA
As if you to will soon

An exclamation mark was added.

Prototype Final USA

Prototype Final USA
They frighten their
captives to death.
Brothers, sisters...
husbands, wives...
How do they cope?
Prototype Final USA
They even frighten their
own tribe...they're not
people, they're animals.

Erik is very harsh on the tribe in the prototype, saying they frighten people to death. This either hints at an earlier turn of events or is a result of poor translation. Given the situation in-game, it's more likely the latter.

Prototype Final USA
The man seems to stare
right into his heart...
The man seems to look
right into your heart...

Minor changes.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
They jump in the fire

Kara can't forgive them in the prototype and can't believe them in the final. The text was also touched up to be more readable.

Prototype Final USA
Go to the labor
trader's village?
 Yes, let's go!
 Wait a while.
Travel to the labor
trader's village?
 Yes, let's go!

The final censored the natives killing the explorer's friends, replacing the cause of their deaths with hunger. Several improvements were made to the grammar, and the final moved a sentence into a separate text box.

Prototype Final USA

The final omitted the fine details of where the journal is.

Prototype Final USA
Tim.. I've been waiting
for you to come for
thousands of years...
Will.. I've been waiting
for you to come for
thousands of years...

This dialogue is the same; however, the spirit's prototype text color is the standard neutral one used when opening a chest whereas it's Lilly's blue text color in the final. This color change applies to all of this spirit's text until a certain point (noted below).

Prototype Final USA
Tim:
Now? What is it?
Will:
Huh? What was that?

Will's reaction to what the spirit showed him was changed slightly.

Prototype Final USA
It's a new world... That is the new world...

The spirit's text here changed a bit. This is when the spirit's prototype text boxes start using its final color (Lilly's text color).

Prototype Final USA
Tim: Me? Such an
ominous world?!
Will: Me? Such a
strange world?!

Will calls it ominous in the prototype and strange in the final.

Prototype Final USA

Prototype Final USA
Neil: Tim!! I never
thought I'd meet you
in a place like this!

Prototype Final USA
Somehow your inventory

Somehow, your inventory

This shows up when you answer yes to the man playing the pipe outside and have a full inventory. The final added a comma.

His eyes were

They was changed to he since you're speaking to only one person.

Prototype Final USA
Squeak...squeak... Kiaaa...kiaaa...

The Kruks in Dao say squeak in the prototype. Since Kruks are a type of horse, this doesn't make sense, especially since they make a different sound in Watermia. The final made the sound more consistent with previous instances.

Prototype Final USA

Prototype Final USA
You've hit # snakes.
Try again!

NOTE: Replace # with the number of snakes you hit.

The prototype allows you to play the snake game after failing without having to re-enter the building, so the man doesn't say this text.

Ending

Prototype Final USA
Karen:
What's happened to
the comet...?
Kara:
What's happened to
the comet...?

The prototype adds an extra line break with the text scrolling up after. Important to note is during the ending while on the comet (minus the part where it shows the world map), the prototype's text box has a transparent background while the final still has a black background to make it easier to see text.

Prototype Final USA
Tim's father:
The comet's power
has disappeared.
Will's father:
The comet's power
has disappeared.

The same line break and text scrolling change is present here.

return to Earth, will
we be separated?

A comma was added.

Prototype Final USA
Karen:  Tim...
Come here....
Show me your face...
Kara: Will...
Come here....
Show me your face...

The final removed the extra space on the first line. Importantly, the music that starts at this text box in the final doesn't start here in the prototype; it starts when Will starts speaking.
