This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.

This page sucks.
If you could make it suck less, that would be awesome.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Check PS2 demo versions (possibly compiled in late July).
  • Document Alpha 98 (March 7th 2002)

July 3, 2002

General Differences

  • Compiled a month before the final build.
  • Behind the senses using black box intro as placeholder.
  • Save file has different name BASLUS-20362NFS6 while final is BASLUS-20362HP2.
  • Car unlocks for NFS edition are different NFS Points, it has required more millions than final.
  • Dash models for all Ferrari cars still exist in this build and can accessible in event 31 (Ferrari F50 in Championship and Ferrari 550 Barchetta in Ultimate racer) and 32 (Ferrari 360 Spider) with completely locked camera cockpit. In final, only event 31 can change any camera. Also there is a unused dash model for Ferrari 360 Modena.
  • Outback track has a bit different skybox

Menus

  • Final build shows loading screen before and after cinematic, when prototype does it only before video. The loading screen in prototype is almost the same version of loading screen, that used by final build before cinematic.

The only differences is copyright text at the bottom and string "Loading" slightly moved to the left in prototype.

Debugs

  • Press L1 when in select cars to unlocks all or choose an locked/unlocked event to unlock/win an event in Ultimate racer/Championship menu or choose an locked track to unlock in select tracks.
  • Debug menu enabled during gameplays.

  • When opening this menu it has title DEBUG.not pretty and consists from 10 options:
  • Finish in Nth position (where N=0-8) - instant finish race with selected position.
  • Speedline mode - seems doesn't to do anything.
  • Car-to-car collisions - by default enabled, disabling this feature doesn't show any changes.
  • Screen Print - by default disabled, possibly make screenshots of game.
  • Environment - has only value <default>, seems doesn't to do anything.
  • removed - Removed "Track map" feature (Found in alpha 98).
  • Rearview Mirror - by default enabled, duplicates the same option from Options/Display.
  • ENV MAPPING - by default enabled, disabling it affects reflections to broke.
  • Show debug info - by default disabled, when enabled shows FPS counter, coordinates of player on map and driven distance.
  • Load All Language (press X) - seems doesn't to do anything.

  • This debug menu also existed in different PlayStation 2 demos.

Demos

  • Several demo builds from Official UK PlayStation 2 Magazine Demo Disc 24 (and 83) and Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine Demo Disc 61 exists.

  • Demo builds contains debug camera. To activate it, connect 2nd controller and press select, to change camera and press start with the second camera to display the car
  • They also have same debug menu, as aforementioned July 3rd Prototype.
