In the demo, Goombella calls the area Petal Plains despite it being called Star Crystal Field on the main menu. She also refers to the Crystal Stars as Star Crystals; this name is kept everywhere else in the demo. Additionally, in the final game's official strategy guide, Petal Meadows is mistakenly referred to as Petal Plains on page 29, where the answers to the first Super Fun Quirk Quiz are given.

Dialogue from a Koopa NPC. There are a couple of instances where Hooktail is referred to as a male that were changed to be gender-neutral in the final game. Hooktail is still referred in a few places as male in the final game, but it's likely unintentional.

Demo Final

stg1_nok_10

Again, it's dialogue from Dupree. "Chérie" refers to a female "loved one", while "Chéri" refers to a male "loved one". As this dialogue is spoken to Goombella, the demo dialogue is actually correct.

Demo Final

In addition to another "he" to "it" change, the Bub-ulb also uses the incorrect usage of the word "fortune". stg1_nok_22
Boy, the mayor has been so

stg1_nok_22
I'm actually worried the old

This question comes from a Koopa NPC near Koops's house. This and the next message are some of the only ones completely changed for the final. It's unknown if the noises he's referring to are an element that was removed, a mistake by the localizers, or a hint at Koops' nature of being a crybaby.

For the record, the final Japanese version also uses the same lines as the final English version, only with "my name" instead of "my face".

Demo Final

stg1_nok_22_01
I'm actually worried the old

This message appears after defeating Hooktail and talking to the very same Koopa. However, since that isn't possible in the demo...

You might also notice that the message for the final English version is the same exact thing as the previous entry - it is, in fact. However, this entry is where the final Japanese version switches to "my face" like in English instead of "my name", so it seems that the previous entry being identical was a mistake by the localizers.

This dialogue reveals that Koops' Power Shell ability was once named Shell Strike. It was likely renamed for consistency: Kooper's default FP ability in Paper Mario was also named Power Shell.

Amusingly, this dialogue is spoken by Koopie Koo. In the demo, she calls him her boy - the editor probably mistook it for something Koopley was saying.

...Of course, it's not like you can even see this in the demo without poking around in the files anyway...

stg1_nok_94

Koops also says this. There's a few differences here. For one, this is a pretty big hint that they hadn't even an idea for the game's final English name. The "Thousand-Year Door" is instead referred to as the "Great Door," The Magical Map is instead referred to as just a plain old magic map, and there's yet another instance of Star Crystal shenanigans. There's also a couple minor edits to the wording of the paragraphs.

This text belongs to a Trouble Center side-quest in which you listen to Kroop rant. The reward at the end is a Turtley Leaf, which he forgot to simmer in tea.

In the demo, the reward seems to have been the actual tea - cold tea, specifically. Or maybe it's just a mistranslation. Or, a placeholder?

irai_14_00

irai_14_00
Tee hee hee! I wonder who

This dialogue refers to a Trouble Center sidequest concerning Merlee, who asks Mario to talk to a Toad named Toce T. to obtain a recipe for the Heartful Cake. The dialogue contains several early names and concepts.

For starters, the Toad's name is Dain T. in the demo. Why it was changed is anybody's guess. It also appears Merlee was once referred to a variation of her Japanese name (Sandēru.) It's a good thing that they caught it, since it was a reference to the Paper Mario character of the same name.

Finally, the Heartful Cake was named Cupid Cake - and the recipe to create it was different.

irai_17_01

This dialogue references a Trouble Center sidequest for Mayor Dour; he tasks you with having several different characters sign a slip for him. One of them turns out to be Kroop, the mayor of Petalburg. The slip was renamed the Silver Club approval slip for the final, and some pronoun choices were changed.

The real meat of it all is that Twilight Town is called "Spectralia." It's likely a placeholder name, but unlike Glitzville's, it's an entirely original one.

Demo Final

In the demo, Kolorado's father notes that the noise Hooktail detests is that of a frog. However, in the final version, it's a cricket.

Incidentally, the period here was moved from inside to outside the quotation marks in the final, rather than outside to inside as with other examples we've seen. Perhaps for clarification's sake as the quotes here are incomplete parts of a single word?

This message is spoken in the same place in both the demo and the final: after safely making it out of the spike room with the key. This one only shows up if Goombella is your active partner.

For whatever reason, Goombella seems to be referring to the curse Mario is given - but that hasn't happened yet. This was fixed in the final.

For some reason, the demo calls the Crystal Star a Star Stone - instead of a Star Crystal - during the end of chapter sequence. It also states that Mario learns the move Earth Tremor... Which, in the final game, is given after clearing Chapter 1.

However, the text for Hooktail Castle in the demo also states that Mario is rewarded Earth Tremor for clearing Chapter 1. Hmm.
