This is a sub-page of Proto:Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium.
Birth Valley
Chaz, Alys, and Hahn enter the town of Zema to find that most of the citizens have been literally petrified. In Birth Valley, they find more of the same, including...

May Script
...An ancient curse? You mean someone is able to cast such a spell in this day and age?!
Final Script
An ancient curse? I can't believe someone is able to cast such a spell in this day and age!
Isn't there any way to restore them?
I've heard that a medicine called 'Alshline' is able to turn stone back to flesh.
I heard about it some time ago in a Motavian village... But, we're talking some time ago.
It's the village of Molcum, which is far south of here.
All right, then. Let's get going!
May Script
Let's see... if your're going to Molcum... I'll give you an extra good deal ... just 500 meseta.
August Script
Let's see... if your're going to Molcum... I'll make you a deal -- just 500 meseta.

Final Script
Let's see... if you're going to Molcum... I'll make you a deal -- just 500 meseta.

May Script
Final Script
Molcum
There's not much left of this native Motavian town; All of the building have been burnt down. A blue-haired man stands among the ashes.
Hey, Alys! Long time no see!
May Script
Alys, do you know this guy?
Final Script
May Script
Well, is shorty here is your current companion? He's still a kid.
Final Script
Is shorty here your current companion? He's still a kid.
May Script
Stop it, Chaz! More importantly, Rune, what's going on?
Final Script
Stop it, you two. More importantly, Rune, what's going on?
Translation Notes
Alys originally only tried to get Chaz under control - this rewrite becomes important a bit later.
This is all the handiwork of Zio.
May Script
Zio! Then perhaps the person who turned the people of Zema into stone is also...
Final Script
Zio! I bet the person who turned the people of Zema into stone is also...
Well, your brain seems to work a little bit.
May Script
Final Script
Translation Notes
Now, obviously, Chaz used a harsher word than "terd" in the Japanese script. Still, though. Rude.
May Script
Cut it out! Anyhow, it seems that everywhere we go, it's always Zio. Who is this Zio?
Final Script
Cut it out! It seems that everywhere we go, it's always Zio. Who is this Zio?
May Script
Final Script
Translation Notes
So in the May script, Rune definitely doesn't know who Zio is, but he might have some inkling in the later drafts.
May Script
But, how about Alshline? What's going to happen with Alshline?
Final Script
With the town destroyed, how are we going to find Alshline?
You're looking for Alshline? In that case, you'd better go to Tonoe.
May Script
Let's see...from here, it's kind of far. First, go to the village of Krup which is east of here... And from there if you go north, you'll find a valley that leads to Tonoe.
Final Script
Let's see...from here, it's kind of far. First travel east to the village of Krup. And from there if you go north, you'll find a valley that leads to Tonoe.
We don't have to pass by Krup, do we?
May Script
A...anyway, let's just head on towards Tonoe! Alys?
Final Script
Ah, let's just head straight towards Tonoe! Alys?
Translation Notes
Further evidence of nervous Hahn in the May script.
May Script
We have no choice. I guess we'll go!
Final Script
Translation Notes
Now this is a strange rewrite. In the May draft and the Japanese script, Alys has already settled on going to Tonoe. In later English drafts, she seemingly doesn't decide to go until Rune joins the party. Speaking of which...
I'm going to invite myself to join your group.
I've got some business there too.

Translation Notes
The editor(s) seem to play up Alys's apparent attraction to Rune a bit more in later English drafts.
May Script
Good, we're all set. And Shorty, try not to be a nuisance!
Final Script
Good, we're all set. And Shorty, try not to get in the way.

May Script

Final Script
Stop calling me Shorty! My name is...
May Script
Chaz, that's what you said your name was, right? Hmmph, what a cheap-sounding name!
Final Script
Chaz, that's what you said your name was, right? Hmmph, what a stupid name!
Translation Notes
The May draft is using the wrong pronouns - it should be "that's what she called you" or "that's what she said your name was."
Later drafts have inadvertently introduced a new error; Go back and read the final English dialogue, and notice that nobody has said Chaz's name by this point. Whoops.
Alys, I think he's going to be more trouble than he's worth!
May Script
Ha, I won't create problems for anyone.
Final Script
Ha, I won't get in anyone's way.
May Script
I'm a little uneasy about our destination. Ha, ha...
Final Script
Ah... I'm a little uneasy about our destination.
Translation Notes
More nervous laughter from Hahn, clearly out of his element here.
Krup
And so, the five-man band takes a visit to Krup. Well, technically they don't have to, but let's just assume they do for convenience sake.
Hahn! You've come home! I'm so happy!
May Script
Saya! I've missed you! ...Let me introduce you to everybody.
Final Script
Saya! I've missed you! Let me introduce you to everyone.

This is my...ahem... fi...fiancee, Saya.

It's a pleasure to meet you.

Saya beams.

Saya teaches children here in her home.

Oh, no, it's about the only thing I'm capable of doing...

Final Script
Alys and Chaz are hunters. They are assisting me in my task.

So you are hunters. It's a difficult job, isn't it, Hahn? Thank you for taking care of Hahn, Alys and Chaz.

It's a difficult job, isn't it? Thank you for taking care of Hahn.

Valley Maze Entrance
North of Krup, the party arrives at a dead-end.
May Script
Final Script
Translation Notes
This line was rewritten to match Rune's response below. "Is Tonoe further along?" "No sweat."...doesn't flow well.
No sweat. This should be a cinch! Everybody! Stand back!
Flaeli!
Rune lets loose a burst of fire, clearing the entrance to the cave. The rest of the party is confused by what he just did, but Rune clarifies that he's using something called "magic." Chaz is impressed.
Tonoe
Passing through the Valley Maze, the party of five reaches Tonoe, a town inhabited by native Motavians. At the back of the town sits the hut of Grandfather Dorin. It's question time!
I'm the information monger, Grandfather Dorin. What exactly do you want to ask? Is it about the secret of refining Titanium?
(The answer is the same in all versions, so let's move on to the next one)
You want to know why the path to this village is blocked by a rock?
If "YES" is selected:
May Script
Ah. In preparation of a possible assault by Zio we've closed ourselves off.
Final Script
In preparation of a possible assault by Zio we've closed ourselves off.

Otherwise:

May & August Scripts
Then do you want the measurements of that famous and beautiful hunter Alys Brangwin, also known as the 'Eight Stroks of Alys' ??
Final Script
Then do you want the measurements of that famous and beautiful hunter Alys Brangwin, also known as the 'Eight Stroke Warrior?'
Translation Notes
Here we go. In the Japanese version, Alys's nickname is "八ッ裂きのライラ". "八ッ裂き" translates to "dismemberer", though the characters used are nonstandard - it's normally "八つ裂き". So she's Alys the Dismemberer, which is why she objects to it later in the game as a ridiculous nickname.
It seems the translator got confused here and tried to translate the name literally; The kanji "八" can translate to "eight" by itself, and "ッ裂き" could translate to "split" or "tear." So they extrapolated from that and got "eight strokes".
Chaz is a rude boy so he answers "Yes."
May Script
Yes. Starting from the top, thirty-six, twenty...
Final Script
Now you're talking. Starting from the top, thirty-six, twenty...
Translation Notes
Another unit conversion error. The first measurement is 88cm in the Japanese script - this should be 34 or 35 inches.
Alys decks the blue geezer in his fur-covered face.
May Script
Yeow! Ouch!! Wh...what are you doing! How dare you strike me without warning like that!
Final Script
Yeow! Ouch!! Wh...what are you doing! How dare you strike me without warning!

It's at this point that Dorin realizes to whom he's talking.
Huh? Yikes! Alys Brangwin!
You blabbing old fart! Do you tell every single fool who comes here my measurements!?

Alys starts to wind up another punch...

Please excuse him, will you, Alys? The old man doesn't have any bad intentions.

Gryz is more reluctant to assist the party in the May prototype.

Tonoe Warehouse Basement
As always, the Alshline is all the way down at the bottommost floor. Very inconvenient.
OK! Let's hurry and return to Zema and help those people out!

Umm... Do you think I can go along? My own town was destroyed by Zio. I couldn't save my father or my mother! One way or another I need to get my revenge!

Hey, Gryz! We're not necessary making this journey for the purpose of conquering Zio.

Either way, I can't stay in this town forever! I'm coming along even if you refuse to take me!

C'mon, Chaz, there's nothing wrong with that. Gryz could be quite a help and... after all, no one knows what's going to happen from here on out.

Yeah, whatever. Let's get going.

Zema
So Chaz, Alys, Hahn, and Gryz go back to Zema and use the Alshline on everyone. The townspeople come back to life and it's all very heartwarming, but there are no text differences anywhere so it's getting skipped. Professor Holt comes back to life and he immediately wants to go back into Birth Valley, which is less heartwarming. After taking a break and discussing going back to the hunter's guild in Aiedo, the party is disturbed by a screaming citizen. At the entrance of Birth Valley...
May Script
Where is the professor, at a time like this?!
Final Script
How are we going to get in with that creature blocking the way.

The entire pre-boss conversation was rewritten. Kind of strange to start editing now after that long cutscene got by unscathed.

Translation Notes
"Here!" would have been a valid translation of "はいっ!!", but only if Alys were asserting his presence: "We're going in. Chaz?" "Here!"
Still beats him suddenly getting scared from the same monster he fought hours ago, though.
After dealing with the Igglanova again, one of the citizens suggests its appearance is related to Birth Valley. While Chaz wonders what's further inside, Hahn realizes that he's going to need to go in after the professor...and that he's going to need to pay Alys again...1000 meseta, a.k.a. his wedding fund. No text differences, so this summary is all you get.
Bio-plant
At the center of an area more mechanical than anywhere else up to this point, Professor Holt waits with a woman in shadow.
Professor! Thank goodness you're safe!
Oh, it's you, Hahn! You came to rescue me! Good job!
May Script
Well, it seems it's pretty safe here. But, how on earth were you able to escape on your own?

Final Script
Well, it seems pretty safe here,
but, how on earth were you able to escape on your own?

Alys is understandably startled at seeing a Numan in the May draft, but not so much in the later English scripts.
My name is Rika. Pleased to meet you.
Those ears... What on earth are you? And what is this place!?

Oh, yes. What's more, this isn't the only one. There are tons of other thousand year old systems that have maintained their functionality. And it's thanks to these systems which control Motavia's climate, soil, and ecology systems that the human race was able to avoid total destruction after the 'Great Collapse.'
Final Script
Oh, yes. What's more, this isn't the only one. There are many such systems that have maintained their functionality.
And it's thanks to these systems which control Motavia's climate, soil, and ecology systems that the human race was able to avoid total destruction after the 'Great Collapse.'
Translation Notes
The word Rika uses to count the systems in the Japanese version is "takusan" which means "many". "A ton" is overstating it - the later drafts are more accurate.
If that's the case, how come this recent environmental destruction is taking place?
May Script
Even though the control system is still functioning, it can only barely maintain the minimal conditions for your existence. Even now this system is starting to run out of control!

Yes, unfortunately so. ...If you want to know more, talk to 'Seed'. He's over there.
Heading further back, Rika and the others face a massive wall of computer terminals.
So, where's this person called Seed?
He's right in front of you.
I am 'Seed', the control computer for this Bio-plant.
Wow! An artificial intelligence!
May Script
That's right, this is no exception. here. It is out of control. The system is beyond my control. It is continuously breeding harmful monsters.
Final Script
That's right, this is no exception. Check my status here. The system is beyond my control. It is continuously breeding harmful monsters.
Translation Notes
The May draft seems to contain fragments of an even earlier English draft here.
If we leave each of these systems running out of control... along with the monster problem, we will have abnormal climate conditions and violent changes in the planet's surface. Motavia will be destroyed!
The group discusses what to do next. The system needs to be shut down, but then they wouldn't be able to maintain the ecosystem. Rika says they need to shut down "Nurvus", which supplies energy to each system, but Seed reveals that the control android for that plant, Demi, has been abducted by Zio.
Who on earth is this Zio!?
May Script
I myself don't know what Zio is all about. But, we do have positive information that Demi is being held by Zio.
Final Script
I myself don't know what Zio is all about.

Just restating known information here - a good candidate for editing.

Translation Notes
The later English scripts don't flow well at all here - Rika didn't mentioned a castle before this point. It's likely that Rika's response was supposed to be rewritten to "in a place called 'Zio's Fort'!", but the August script forgot to delete the first line. Then another editor changed the line back to what it was in the May script.
Is that by any chance... beyond the quicksand of Mile?

Oh, that sinister-looking castle! The castle is north of Zema.

Translation Notes
A rare difference in the October prototype script: It still uses "it", not "it's" for Alys's first line.

Hey! That's good! That's the spirit!

So, you will go? Please take Rika with you.
Who is this girl anyway? She seems curiously knowledgeable about these matters...
Are you saying that she is an artificial life form?
That's right. She is a product of a thousand years of improvement on genetic information from a prototype prior to the 'Great Collapse.' I have also given her a basic education. She will surely be a great help to you.

All right, Seed. We'll take her!

I must first go back to the academy! We have to spread this information as much as possible.
Everyone exits the computer room. Rika is the last to leave, taking one last look at Seed before she goes.
There is only one way for me to stem the outbreak of monsters. Now that I have sent into the world the fruit of a thousand years worth of research, there are no obstacles to its execution.
After a mysterious set of computer beeps, all of Seed's monitors turn red...
