Proto:Pokémon Gold and Silver/Spaceworld 1997 Demo/Pokémon

This is a sub-page of Proto:Pokémon Gold and Silver/Spaceworld 1997 Demo.

Despite only being a demo, this build of the game contains data for 251 Pokémon: the returning original 151 as well as 100 newcomers. While only a handful are obtainable through the demo, all of them have front and back sprites, names, typing, and the like. For the sake of accuracy, the "Final" sprites shown here are from the game's original Japanese release. A handful of sprites underwent further changes during the localization process prior to the game's international release, the full details of which can be seen here.

Moreover, there exist a handful of differences when it comes to the Pokémon menu sprites. Indeed, not only do some Pokémon use different icons, but some menu sprites are also completely absent from this build, with those being denoted by asterisks in the tables below.

Pokédex

Original 151

All of the original 151 Pokémon received brand new sprites, with both front and back sprites being completely original. Interestingly, many of the front sprites come from the Japanese release of Pokémon Blue. This is due to both Blue and Gold and Silver being developed side by side with Blue being completed first and ultimately making use of these sprites first. Oddly enough, the back sprites seen here are exclusive to this build, as for some reason Blue reused the original Generation I sprites, and so did Yellow, despite itself receiving a set of brand new front sprites. These back sprites already follow the same design philosophy as the final Gold and Silver ones, with them being drawn in full resolution instead of being stored at half size like in Generation I.

Another thing worth noting when it comes to the relationship between this build of the games and Pokémon Blue is that the former shares the latter's changes made to Nidoqueen and Geodude's weights, as well as Porygon's Pokémon category. The category change and Nidoqueen's corrected weight would go on to be featured in the final versions of Gold and Silver, whereas Geodude's decreased weight was reverted in Japan starting with Yellow in 1998.

The 100 new Pokémon introduced in this prototype, of which only 60 were officially released as part of Generation II, with 29 of those released Pokémon undergoing anything from minor to major design revisions before the final releases. Also note that while somewhat organized, the order in which these Pokémon appear in likely reflects some sort of internal index. The final incarnation of these Pokémon (if known) will be provided for comparison.

The face markings are also more akin to freckles, evoking the numbers circling a clock. A wavy back pattern can also be seen, with it perhaps later inspiring the chest pattern from Noctowl's final design.

From 三 mi (three) and コンコン konkon (fox bark).
Water Scrapped Vulpix pre-evolution which was originally created for Generation I. Essentially a smaller, cuter Vulpix with messier hair and only three tails. Evolves into Vulpix starting at level 13. Typing is very likely a mistake caused by the Fire and Water types only having a one-byte difference in the code.

From もじゃもじゃ mojamoja (unkempt hair); shortened form of モンジャラ Monjara (Tangela).

From 跳ねる haneru (jump), 羽 hane (wing), and エイ ei (ray).
マンタイン Mantine Water/Flying Has a slimmer, more kite-like design, with a more refined tail, no horns, wing-like gills, and an angelic front face. The back face, meanwhile, is more evil-looking, contrasting with the front face. The final design instead goes with a more standard-looking manta ray, though the eye markings on it may be a remnant from this early design. The later introduced Mantyke would end up actually featuring a face marking on its back, though this one is a smile instead of a grin.

Water Scrapped Qwilfish evolution. Essentially a fat dopey-eyed sea mine-like fish with thick dull spikes, a large mouth, a lightning symbol on its forehead, power button-like eyes, and a stomach pattern as seen in its back sprite. May have inspired Whiscash from Generation III, which shares design similarities.

Water A scrapped sunfish Pokémon with a small lure resembling a childish "hair swirl". Its name ais clearly a placeholder, because as revealed in an interview Game Freak devs tends to use "[Basis][Evo Stage]" for Pokémon whose names haven't been finalized yet. Evolves into Ikari starting at level 19.

From 碇 "ikari" (anchor) and 怒り "ikari" (rage).
Water/Steel A scrapped shark Pokémon whose tail is an anchor on a chain. Possibly reworked from "Jagg", a cut shark Pokémon from Generation I. May have inspired Sharpedo from Generation III, which shares design similarities. Evolves into Gurotesu starting at level 38.
182 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSMagikarp.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 182.png PokeGoldDemo-front 182.png -- -- -- グロテス Gurotesu Grotesque Water/Steel A scrapped Pokémon seemingly inspired by the gulper eel and possibly the viperfish, with a small head lure trademark of the anglerfish. Interestingly, this line may have actually intended to be a split one, simply using back to back evolutions as a placeholder. This would be supported by Manboo 1 resembling Ikari in terms of colors and spikes, and Manboo 1 resembling Gurotesu when it comes to the anglerfish inspiration. The lure aspect may have ultimately inspired Chinchou and Lanturn, while the body type may have ultimately inspired Huntail from Generation III.

Bears some slight resemblance to the Slime enemies from Dragon Quest, which incidentally also come in a stronger metal form. Seeing how it was obtained after evolving a Ditto with a Metal Coat, this Pokémon may have influenced the Metal Powder item found in the final games.

Twins
ソーナンス Soonansu Dark/Normal Scrapped Girafarig pre-evolution. Essentially mischievous conjoined twin ghosts with ghastly spikes floating around them. This is where Girafarig gets its spikes. Evolves into Girafarig starting at level 29. Was eventually reworked into Wobbuffet, which, while ultimately being reworked into a Psychic-type fighting dummy, funnily enough wound up keeping the Ghost menu icon in the final games.

The "evil half" was later replaced by a standard backside, though side a small mischievous Chain-Chomp like tail. Even after being redesigned, this Pokémon would keep its palindrome name and contrasting typing. The first half of the front sprite matches final.

From coin, 子 ko (child), and にゃー nyaa (meow).
Normal Scrapped Meowth pre-evolution which was originally created for Generation I. When compared to its cut Generation I equivalent, this one has a different ear design, a short curly tail instead of a long straight one, and a forehead adorned with a 5-yen coin instead of a kōban. It's likely the three coins seen here weren't meant to actually be levitating, and that it was a either way of showing it surrounded by coins, or a way for the artist to sketch potential alternate coin designs. Evolves into Meowth starting at level 14.

Dark A scrapped sleigh bell-themed cat Pokémon. Evolves into Berurun starting at level 28. The idea of a Dark-type feline Pokémon would later be revisited in Generation V with Purrloin, though without the music theme. May have more directly inspired the Skitty line from Generation III, as seen by the tail concept.

From 三つ mitsu (three of something) and 星 hoshi (spot/star)
レディアン Ledian Bug/Flying Has a design more akin to its pre-evolution, retaining the eyes and overall body shape, though the round spots are now star-shaped. This likely stems from from a pun, as the word hoshi can refer to either a spot or a star. The final games would instead opt for a humanoid, Super Sentai or Tokusatsu Heroes-inspired design, though the star connection was retained, with both it and Ledyba being known as the "Five-Star Pokémon", and with the dex stating Ledian draws its strength from starlight.

Sprites were redrawn for the final; poses are the same. Despite the type change, even to this day some of Umbreon's Pokédex entries makes mention of it spraying poisonous sweat from its pores, either a reference to or a leftover from its original typing.

Water A scrapped Pokémon resembling the shell of both Slowbro (general anatomy) and Slowking (gem). Interestingly, while never seen in-game, several of Slowbro's Pokédex entries describe it capable of reverting back to a Slowpoke if its Shellder was ever to come off. The same canonically applies to Slowking, and interestingly enough, official artwork depicting such occurrences reveal that the Shellder itself remains unchanged. Doesn't have any direct relation to either the Slowpoke or Shellder lines.

The idea for a fish-gun hybrid may have been taken from the Gunfish, an enemy from Pulseman, which itself may have been inspired by the archerfish. The front half of the design was kept, albeit with smaller pupils, but the back half was made more fish-like.

From 綿 wata (cotton) and 猫 neko (cat).
ワタッコ Watakko Grass/Flying Once again has more cat-like features, no feet, and no arms. Its head cotton tuft also has a more hot-air balloon-like design, instead of just balloon-like. Is assigned a pink palette instead of a blue one.
217 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSHumanoid.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 217.png PokeGoldDemo-front 217.png -- -- -- バリリーナ Baririina
From barrier and ballerina.
Normal Scrapped Mr. Mime pre-evolution which reuses the name originally assigned to it. Essentially an egg-shaped little dancing jester. Its egg-like design was perhaps inspired by the concept of "egg registery". Evolves into Mr. Mime starting at level 15. Mr. Mime would later receive a pre evolution, Mime Jr., in Generation IV, with it even having a similar pose to the one seen here.

ムチュール Muchuuru Ice Has a design more akin to Jynx, complete with a long dress, a tidy hairstyle, and a black face.

220 240 Magby PokeGoldDemo-MSHumanoid.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 220.png PokeGoldDemo-front 220.png PokeGoldFinal-MSHumanoid.gif PokeGoldFinal-back 240.png PokeGoldFinal-front 240.png Identical ブビィ Bubii Fire Has a spikier head, a different facial expression, and a stomach pattern more akin to Magmar's.
221 182 Bellossom PokeGoldDemo-MSOddish.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 221.png PokeGoldDemo-front 221.png PokeGoldFinal-MSOddish.gif PokeGoldFinal-back 182.png PokeGoldFinal-front 182.png Identical キレイハナ Kireihana Grass/Poison Is larger overall, is surrounded by scent particles much like Gloom, and has more elaborate head flowers. Interestingly, its skin is also dark, much like the rest of the Oddish line, something which was changed quite late in development.
222 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSOddish.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 222.png PokeGoldDemo-front 222.png -- -- -- ツボミット Tsubomitto
From 蕾 tsubomi (bud) and mitt.
Grass/Poison Scrapped Weepinbell branched evolution, meant to be a parallel to Bellossom. The "mitt" from its name may hint at a baseball theme, with this Pokémon somewhat resembling a pitcher, which would make sense given how the Bellsprout line is based on pitcher plants.
223 241 Miltank PokeGoldDemo-MSQuadruped.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 223.png PokeGoldDemo-front 223.png PokeGoldFinal-MSQuadruped.gif PokeGoldFinal-back 241.png PokeGoldFinal-front 241.png Identical ミルタンク Miltank Normal A rounder, more imposing Miltank, complete with a very slightly different head design and perkier nipples. Is assigned a brown palette instead of a pink one.
224 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSLapras.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 224.png PokeGoldDemo-front 224.png -- -- -- ボムシカー Bomushikaa
From bomb, アシカ ashika (sea lion), and seeker.
Water/Fire A scrapped dual Water/Fire Pokémon resembling a circus seal balancing a magma ball on its nose. The Water/Fire typing would remain unutilized until the introduction of Volcanion in Generation VI, and the idea of a circus seal Pokémon then revisited in Generation VII with Popplio, though without the fire theme.
225 225 Delibird PokeGoldDemo-MSClefairy.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 225.png PokeGoldDemo-front 225.png PokeGoldFinal-MSRhydon.gif PokeGoldFinal-back 225.png PokeGoldFinal-front 225.png ギフト Gifuto

デリバード Delibird Water/Ice Has no eyebrows, a Santa "hat" on its head, and heart-shaped stomach spot.
226 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSAnimal.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 226.png PokeGoldDemo-front 226.png -- -- -- コトラ Kotora
From 子 ko child and トラ tora (tiger).
Electric Scrapped tiger Pokémon which was originally created for Generation I. Essentially an adorable round feline which appears to be based on tiger-shaped clay bells, with the crack from which the bell can be heard becoming the thunder symbol on its belly. Evolves into Raitora starting at Level 35.
227 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSAnimal.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 227.png PokeGoldDemo-front 227.png -- -- -- ライトラ Raitora
From 雷 rai (thunder) and トラ tora (tiger).
Electric Kotora's evolution, which was also originally created for Generation I, and retains the clay bell basis.
228 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSBird.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 228.png PokeGoldDemo-front 228.png -- -- -- マダーム Madaamu マダム Madame Normal/Flying Scrapped Farfetch'd evolution. Essentially an elegant swan/goose holding a wild onion. Given its elegant name, appearance, and pose, it may have been based on masquerade dancers. Evolves from Farfetch'd starting at Level 24. Farfetch'd would only receive an evolution, Sirfetch'd, in Generation VIII, though this evolution has been confirmed as being unrelated to this design.
229 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSGengar.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 229.png PokeGoldDemo-front 229.png -- -- -- ノロワラ Norowara
From 呪われる norowareru (to be cursed) and 藁人形 wara ningyō (straw doll).
Ghost A scrapped Pokémon based on both a voodoo doll and a bear. Was designed after its signature move, Nail Down, a predecessor to Curse. Evolves into Kyonpan starting at level 1.
230 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSGengar.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 230.png PokeGoldDemo-front 230.png -- -- -- キョンパン Kyonpan
From キョンシー kyonshii and panda.
Ghost A scrapped Pokémon based on both a jiangshi (a vampire-like mythological creature from Chinese mythology) and a panda. Given how Norowara resembles a teddy bear, then perhaps Kyonpan was based on a plushie, which would be supported by a cut item pairing related to sewing. If that's the case, then this line may have inspired the Shuppet line from Generation III, which is also based on haunted toys.
231 198 Murkrow PokeGoldDemo-MSBird.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 231.png PokeGoldDemo-front 231.png PokeGoldFinal-MSBird.gif PokeGoldFinal-back 198.png PokeGoldFinal-front 198.png Identical ヤミカラス Yamikarasu Dark/Flying Front sprite is very similar to the final, albeit with a longer tail, different eyes, a much witchier crest, and one less toe on each foot.
232 242 Blissey PokeGoldDemo-MSRhydon.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 232.png PokeGoldDemo-front 232.png PokeGoldFinal-MSClefairy.gif PokeGoldFinal-back 242.png PokeGoldFinal-front 242.png ハッピー Happii

ハピナス Happiness Normal Has a more Chansey-like design, though now with two egg pouches, fleshier hair, and a heart "hat".
233 212 Scizor PokeGoldDemo-MSBug.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 233.png PokeGoldDemo-front 233.png PokeGoldFinal-MSBug.gif PokeGoldFinal-back 212.png PokeGoldFinal-front 212.png シザース Shizaasu
Scissors
ハッサム Hassamu Bug/Flying Alongside the change to a Bug/Steel typing, this Pokémon would go on to be made more robotic, losing its mouth, detailing on its pincers, and becoming bright red instead green.
234 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSBug.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 234.png PokeGoldDemo-front 234.png -- -- -- プラックス Purakkusu
Plucks
Bug Scrapped Pinsir evolution. Essentially a larger, fiercer looking Pinsir with a face more akin to a mask. Evolves from Pinsir starting at Level 42. May have inspired Heracross, given the similar arm shape and the fact that there exists an early Heracross sprite whose face is similar to Pinsir's.
235 228 Houndour PokeGoldDemo-MSAnimal.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 235.png PokeGoldDemo-front 235.png PokeGoldFinal-MSAnimal.gif PokeGoldFinal-back 228.png PokeGoldFinal-front 228.png デビル Debiru
Devil
デルビル Derubiru Fire Front sprite had its pose tweaked and redrawn, while the back sprite was completely remade. Originally had a series of spine bones along its back.

237 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSRhydon.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 237.png PokeGoldDemo-front 237.png -- -- -- ウルフマン Urufuman
Wolfman
Ice A scraped Pokémon based on a mimic wearing a wolf pelt, making it look like a wolf itself, with its eyes poking out of its mouth and its hands emerging out of the fur. Evolves into Warwolf starting at level 35. The concept of a Pokémon disguising itself would later be revisited in Generation VII with Mimikyu.
238 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSRhydon.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 238.png PokeGoldDemo-front 238.png -- -- -- ワーウルフ Waaurufu
Warwolf
Ice Wolfman's evolution, with it now larger, its arms more defined and ending with claws. The concept of a Pokémon disguising itself would later be revisited in Generation VII with Mimikyu.
239 233 Porygon2 PokeGoldDemo-MSVoltorb.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 239.png PokeGoldDemo-front 239.png PokeGoldFinal-MSVoltorb.gif PokeGoldFinal-back 233.png PokeGoldFinal-front 233.png Identical ポリゴン2 Porygon2 Normal Has a more lion-like design, as opposed to a smoother interpretation of Porygon's design. Coincidentally shares a striking resemblance to Pon de Lion, the Mister Donut mascot, which didn't exist until 2003. Much like Manboo1, this Pokémon follows the placeholder naming scheme, though this name was ultimately kept, perhaps due to it evoking the idea of a V2 Porygon.
240 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSRhydon.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 240.png PokeGoldDemo-front 240.png -- -- -- ナメール Nameeru
From 舐める nameru (to lick).
Normal Scrapped Lickitung evolution. Essentially a large Lickitung seemingly styled after snake charmers. With a turban of sorts, a curly mustache, and using its tongue like both a flute and a snake. Evolves from Lickitung starting at Level 32. Lickitung would later receive an evolution, Lickilicky, in Generation IV.
241 208 Steelix PokeGoldDemo-MSSnake.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 241.png PokeGoldDemo-front 241.png PokeGoldFinal-MSSnake.gif PokeGoldFinal-back 208.png PokeGoldFinal-front 208.png Identical ハガネール Haganeeru Steel/Ground Front sprite is nearly identical to the final with minor shading differences, whereas the back sprite exactly matches the final.
242 230 Kingdra PokeGoldDemo-MSLapras.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 242.png PokeGoldDemo-front 242.png PokeGoldFinal-MSDragon.gif* PokeGoldFinal-back 230.png PokeGoldFinal-front 230.png Identical キングドラ Kingdra Dragon/Water Was made less dragon-like, and more akin to a leafy seadragon.

From 雷 rai (thunder).
ライコウ Raikou Electric Has a radically different design, with it depicting Raikou not as a tiger, but as a moody canine with spiky thunder-like hair. The battle scar-like body markings likely went on to inspire the final design's stripes.
244 244 Entei PokeGoldDemo-MSAnimal.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 244.png PokeGoldDemo-front 244.png PokeGoldFinal-MSAnimal.gif PokeGoldFinal-back 244.png PokeGoldFinal-front 244.png エン En
From炎 en (fire).
エンテイ Entei Fire Has a radically different design, with it depicting Entei not as a lion, but as a cocky canine with fiery fur.
245 245 Suicune PokeGoldDemo-MSAnimal.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 245.png PokeGoldDemo-front 245.png PokeGoldFinal-MSAnimal.gif PokeGoldFinal-back 245.png PokeGoldFinal-front 245.png スイ Sui
From 水 sui (water).
スイクン Suicune Water Has a radically different design, with it depicting Suicune not as a leopard, but as a moppy canine with messy hair and a tail tied together with a gem, not unlike Zoroark's ponytail. Already has spots, and the wavy pattern on its legs likely went on to inspire the final design's flowing ribbons.
246 215 Sneasel PokeGoldDemo-MSAnimal.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 246.png PokeGoldDemo-front 246.png PokeGoldFinal-MSAnimal.gif Pokemon Gold and Silver (J) Sneasel back.png Pokemon Gold (J) Sneasel.png Identical ニューラ Nyuura Dark Originally looked more like classical depictions of the Kamaitachi. The final games completely overhauled the design, but kept the brown palette. The sprites were then touched-up once again in the localized versions, before being "finalized" in Crystal.
247 250 Ho-Oh PokeGoldDemo-MSBird.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 247.png PokeGoldDemo-front 247.png PokeGoldFinal-MSHo-Oh.gif* PokeGoldFinal-back 250.png PokeGoldFinal-front 250.png Identical ホウオウ Ho-Oh Flying Originally lacked a counterpart, making it more akin to Mewtwo when it comes to its singular legendary status. Front sprite was completely redrawn, whereas the back sprite only had its shading tweaked.

250 190 Aipom PokeGoldDemo-MSAnimal.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 250.png PokeGoldDemo-front 250.png PokeGoldFinal-MSRhydon.gif PokeGoldFinal-back 190.png Pokemon Gold (J) Aipom.png テイル Teiru
Tail
エイパム Aipom Normal Dex placement indicates a late addition. Originally looked more like a standard monkey. Has defined hands which are cream- instead of fur-colored, much like its ears. Its tail is also smaller, less stylized, and has four fingers instead of three. Uses a brown palette as opposed to a purple one.
251 -- -- PokeGoldDemo-MSAnimal.gif PokeGoldDemo-back 251.png PokeGoldDemo-front 251.png -- -- -- リーフィ Riifi
Leafy
Grass Dex placement indicates a late addition. Scrapped Grass-type Eeveelution obtained after exposing an Eevee to a Leaf Stone. Was later reworked into Leafeon, a Generation IV Pokémon which even reused the name "Riifi" early in development.

Base Stats

Data Structure

The data structure is 31 bytes long, compared to Generation I's 28 bytes, and the final Generation II games' 32 bytes. The base stats data table is in Pokédex order (starting with Bulbasaur), and begins at address 0x50f10. The demo lacking the egg groups byte reveals that while breeding had already conceived, it had yet to be actually implemented.

Other than that, the data structure is essentially the same as the final Gold and Silver one, with the only remaining difference is that the final table lacks the address of the front and back Pokémon sprites for the Pokémon, unlike Generation I and this demo. Interestingly enough, however, the final table does have a zero-filled four-byte section where these addresses were.

Original 151

Of the 151 returning Pokémon, 95 of them received changes to their Special Attack or Special Defense between the demo and the final version. In general, Pokémon have higher Special Attack and lower Special Defense in the final version. The Bellsprout, Magnemite, and Tangela evolutionary lines received the most drastic changes.

The Pokémon's demo stat is listed first, and its final stat is listed second.

Demo 152-251

All of the new Pokémon have a placeholder catch rate of 255, along with a base experience of either 100 or 64, and many of them use 50s as a placeholder. They virtually all share a Medium Slow growth rate, with the only exceptions being Crobat, Slowking, and Elekid, which have a Medium Fast rate. The entirety of the new roster is assigned the same TM flag data, with them being able to learn TMs 1, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 24, 25, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38, 40, 44, 45, 46, 49, 50, 54, and 55.

Interestingly, some stats appear to have been cloned from Gen 1 Pokémon during development, with the SpD dummied out.

  • Slowking and Politoed's stats were cloned from Slowbro and Poliwrath respectively.
  • Rai and En's stats were cloned from Zapdos and Moltres.
  • Sui appears to use a previous revision of Articuno's stats, with the Special Attack still being 125 from before it was swapped.

Gender Ratios

Despite gender having been implemented, it is still in a visibly early state. Namely, only the 50/50, purely Male, purely Female, and Gender Unknown ratios have been implemented, and even there differences are abound. Unless specified, the Pokémon mentioned below use the default 50/50 ratio:

  • The starter, Eevee, Kabuto, Omanyte, Aerodactyl, and Snorlax lines were ultimately given the 87.5 Male/12.5 Female ratio.
  • The Growlithe, Abra, Machop, and Magby lines, as well as Electabuzz, were ultimately given the 75 Male/25 Female ratio.
  • The Cleffa, Vulpix, Wigglytuff, and Igglybuff lines were ultimately given the 25 Male/75 Female ratio.
  • The Tauros line, as well as Tyrogue and Hitmontop, were ultimately given the Male Only ratio.
  • The Chansey, Smoochum, and Miltank lines were ultimately given the Female Only ratio.
  • The Staryu, legendary birds, Mewtwo, Mew, Unown, Porygon2, legendary beasts, and Ho-Oh lines were ultimately given the Gender Unknown ratio.
  • Elekid is Male Only and Snubbull is Female Only, while in the final games they were ultimately given the 75 Male/25 Female and 25 Male/75 Female ratios respectively.
  • Interestingly enough, the scrapped Pokémon Rinrin is Female Only, but its evolution, Berurun, has a 50/50 ratio.

Evolutionary Requirements

The various ways in which Pokémon which did make it into the final games can evolve in this prototype. Evolutionary stones work as intended, except for the newly introduced Heart and Poison Stones. Happiness-related evolutions don't yet exist at this point of development, whereas all items necessary for a trade evolution are functional.

Interestingly, the demo uses a rather odd, possibly placeholder evolution method for Tyrogue, where it evolves into Hitmonlee upon reaching level 15, then immediately proceeds to evolve into Hitmonchan, and then Hitmontop right after. The evolution can be stopped at any point, thus letting you choose which Pokémon you want, albeit in a somewhat clumsy fashion. If left untouched, you will end up with a Hitmontop, though all three Hitmons will be recorded in the Pokédex. Meanwhile, Eevee evolving via a Leaf Stone was ultimately implemented into Generation VIII as the way to obtain Leafeon, due to the lack of a Moss Stone in those games.

It's also worth noting that here, Quagsire, Marill, Sunflora, Togepi, and Snubbull are all single-stage Pokémon. This is due to Wooper, Azumarill, Sunkern, Togetic, and Granbull being missing from this build of the games.

Shinies

Shiny Pokémon already exist in this build, albeit in a rather rudimentary form. Unlike in the final games, the DV requirement for shininess is simply to have 10 or higher in each non-HP stat, yielding an appearance rate of 81/4096 or ~1.977% (considerably higher than the final's rate of 1/8192). Upon encountering one in the wild, no special animation will play out; the proper send-out animation used for shiny Pokémon in the final games is actually implemented, but for some reason it is only assigned to non-shiny Pikachu and Sunflora.

Due to this build being for the Super Game Boy as opposed to the Game Boy Color, the array of colors available is incredibly limited. As such, in addition to the 10 Pokémon palettes returning from Red and Green, another 10 were added as their shiny equivalents. Thus, all Pokémon of a given palette also share the same shiny coloration.

Oddly enough, the shiny palette applied to pink Pokémon has the lighter pink turned to a baby blue, while the darker pink becomes the same shade as the lighter one. This improper palette causes the sprites to which it is assigned to look messed up, and so it's likely that this second shade was instead supposed to be a darker shade of blue, as seen below:
