Proto:Pokémon Gold and Silver/Spaceworld 1999 Demo/Pokémon
This is a sub-page of Proto:Pokémon Gold and Silver/Spaceworld 1999 Demo.
This article is a work in progress. ...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes. |
While the Pokédex is starting to resemble the final game's, there are plenty of unusual differences to note. Several Johto Pokémon also use placeholder sprites (or even leftovers from the Spaceworld '97 demo) and/or cries. Please note that for a more accurate comparison of how the sprites evolved throughout the game's initial development, the Final sprites shown on this page are from the game's original Japanese release. A handful of sprites underwent further changes during the localization process prior to the game's international release, full details of which can be seen here.

This early design's prominent use of pink may have influenced Furret's Shiny palette in later games. |

Gold sprite almost matches the final, albeit missing the yellow around its eyes and having a wider body. Silver sprite is a duplicate of the Gold one. The name "Mitei", used here as well as for a few others such as Celebi, means "undecided" in Japanese, indicating that these are simply placeholder names. Cry is unfinished, it is Normal-type, instead of Water/Electric-type, and only knows Tackle. It does not evolve. Chinchou's Dex number is 170 in the final game, while Lanturn is the one occupying 171. Uses the clawed bug icon instead of the fish icon. |

Uses the placeholder "Mitei" name. Uses a yellow color palette that would end up being used for Azumarill's shiny palette in the final. The Gold design also overall bears a much closer resemblance to Marill itself compared to the final design. Backsprite would be used by Marill in the final. Silver design uses a placeholder sprite based on this proto version's Igglybuff's sprite. Uses the backsprite of Marill, but with a yellow palette applied. Uses the name and backsprite of Tsubomitto, the unused Weepinbell split evolution from Spaceworld '97, and also uses its typing, Grass/Poison, and its moveset, implying Tsubomitto was originally supposed to be here. Silver sprite has a totally different pose, and uses Aipom's design from the Spaceworld 1997 demo. Interestingly, the backsprite appears to depict an earlier or alternate version of the early Gold design, as the ears are again differently shaped, and Aipom's tail is shown having five fingers, instead of three like in the final game. Uses the name, backsprite, and menu sprite of Madame, the unused Farfetch'd evolution from Spaceworld '97, and also uses its typing, Normal/Flying, and its moveset, implying Madaamu was originally supposed to be here. ツインズ Tsuinzu |
Uses the name of Tsuinzu, the unused Girafarig pre-evolution from Spaceworld '97, and the backsprite shows another unused pre-evolution of Girafarig. Its moveset is similar to Girafarig's and it even evolves into it at level 24. Its red palette seems to be a leftover of Tsuinzu's previous design, and it's a Psychic/Normal type. Unfortunately, whatever this iteration was meant to represent is still little more than an outline. Interestingly, the temporary front sprite used matches the outline of Wobbuffet's final back sprite flipped upside down. In the final, Wobbuffet shares the Dex spot, Psychic type and a similar concept, and has various design similarities to the various Twins incarnations, suggesting that Tsuinzu was reworked into Wobbuffet. |

Noticeably, the wings and drill shaped tail are absent from these early sprites, as are the blue stripes, which are instead filled by small black spots on either side of its body on the Gold front sprite. Gold sprite matches the final. Silver sprite is a duplicate of the Gold one, while, in the final game, Silver has its own unique sprite. Uses the placeholder "Mitei" name. Uses the backsprite and typing of the Mr. Mime pre-evolution from Spaceworld '97, and its cry is unfinished. Corsola's Dex number is 222 in the final game, while Magcargo is the one occupying 219. |

Gold sprite has differently, more stereotypical "slug eyes" than the final design, in addition to lacking the magma-themed bubbles and "drool" seen in the final sprite. The color palette also bears a closer resemblance to Magcargo's final sprite palette than Slugma's. Silver sprite is a duplicate of the Gold one. Its backsprite is very crude and unrefined, indicating it wasn't quite finished at this point in development. Uses Magcargo's height and weight and uses the "Mitei" placeholder name. It is an Ice/Ground-type. Uses the quadruped menu icon instead of the slime icon. Corsola occupies this Dex number in the final game, while Slugma was moved to 218. |

Still uses its early name, "Haneei", from the Spaceworld '97 demo. Has a differently shaped "mouth" more in line with that of real-life manta rays. Additional differences between these front sprites and the final sprites can also be spotted in the patterns on its fins and chest, as well as its antennae being further spaced out. Also apparent are the fish on its underside, which appear to be torpedo-like featureless fish rather than the Remoraid seen in the final design, as well as having two as opposed to just one. Moreover, only the proto Goldsprite depict these "Remoraid" with a face. Its cry is shorter, and only repeats once, instead of twice. |

みてい12 mitei 12 |
Gold sprite and back sprite have a totally different pose and color scheme, and a design which appears to be based on Kokopelli, a fertility deity in some Native American cultures. Silver sprite is a duplicate of the Gold one. Uses the placeholder "Mitei" name. It also has a different species name, being listed as the "Plant Pokémon" instead of the "Time travel Pokémon", it is a Normal-type instead of a Psychic/Grass-type, and it is one kilogram heavier than in the final game. |
Footprint Changes
As it turns out, some of the footprint graphics differ between the ones used in this prototype and the ones used in the final game.
This placeholder graphic can be seen used in the Pokédex entries for Chinchou, Azumarill, Sunkern, Wobbuffet, Corsola, an Celebi. In the final game, all these Pokémon were given their own unique footprint, with exception of Sunkern, as its finalized design lacks feet of any kind.
Tentacool uses a footprint which is shaped like the extremity of its tentacles, while it doesn't have any footprint in the final game (and the rest of the franchise for that matter).
Tentacruel uses a small round footprint which seems a bit too small to represent the extremity of its tentacles. Much like with Tentacool, Tentacruel doesn't have any footprint in the final game (and the rest of the franchise for that matter).
Exeggcute, for some odd reason, uses a medium-sized round footprint despite it not having feet of any kind. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't have any footprint in the final game (and the rest of the franchise for that matter).
Interestingly, the footprint used by Lanturn appears to have been intended for Tsubomitto, as it matches the general shape of its feet. This makes sense as Lanturn was built off Tsubomitto, reusing its name, typing, and back sprite, while Tsubomitto itself was apparently still planned to be included in the final game by June of 1999, making it clear it had received a footprint of its own by then. Meanwhile, in the final game, Lanturn doesn't have a footprint.
Also worth noting is the footprint used by Wooper, which appears to have been intended for Madame, as it matches the general shape of its feet. This makes sense as Wooper was built off Madame, reusing its name, typing, back sprite and menu sprite, while Madame itself was apparently still planned to be included in the final game by June of 1999, making it clear it had received a footprint of its own by then. Interestingly enough, Wooper still uses this exact same footprint in the final game, despite having totally different feet. This oddity/oversight would later be fixed in subsequent games.
Piloswine | Slugma |
---|---|
Interestingly enough, the Spaceworld '99 version of Slugma (known there as "Mitei10") uses a footprint which appears to be a larger version of the one used by Piloswine. This could reinforce the theory that Slugma was built off of a short-lived cut Piloswine evolution, as in this build it also uses the "Quadruped" menu sprite and the Ice/Ground typing, much like Swinub and Piloswine. Further proof could also be found in the Gold CBB Scratchpads, with Slugma's entries containing a larger Piloswine sprite, and Swinub's containing a smaller Piloswine sprite (which could mean the developers were trying to repurpose Piloswine as a middle stage evolution). Meanwhile, in the final game Slugma doesn't have a footprint, and Piloswine would only get an evolution in Generation IV in the form of Mamoswine.
SW'99 | Final |
---|---|
Raticate has a slightly different footprint, with it incorrectly showing a four-toed foot instead of a three-toed one.
SW'99 | Final |
---|---|
Mew has a slightly different footprint, with it being slightly longer than in the final game.
SW'99 | Final |
---|---|
Murkrow has a slightly different footprint, with it showing a three-toed foot instead of a four-toed one. Interestingly, as can be seen in Murkrow's Spaceworld '97 design as well as its Spaceworld '99 Silver sprite, Murkrow was originally intended to only have two front toes instead of three like it does in the final game. The footprint graphic was updated in the final game to reflect the updated foot design.
