Proto:Pokémon Gold and Silver/Spaceworld 1999 Demo/Pokémon
This is a sub-page of Proto:Pokémon Gold and Silver/Spaceworld 1999 Demo.
While the Pokédex is starting to match the one seen in the final games, there are still plenty of unusual differences to note. Several Johto Pokémon also use placeholder sprites (or even leftovers from the Spaceworld '97 demo) and/or cries. Speaking of sprites, it is clear that Silver having its own unique sprites was a relatively recent addition, given how virtually all of them are unfinished. Moreover, a couple of sprites here clearly use SGB ("Spaceworld 1997-style") shading, which tell us that some of those sprites were older assets being reused, with some of them ultimately being redrawn for the final game.
For the sake of accuracy, the "Final" sprites shown here are from the game's original Japanese release. A handful of sprites underwent further changes during the localization process prior to the game's international release, the full details of which can be seen here.

Uses the name, backsprite, and menu icon of Tsubomitto, the scrapped Weepinbell split evolution from Spaceworld '97, as well as its typing and moveset, revealing that Lanturn was built off of Tsubomitto. Lanturn's Dex number is 171 in the final games, while Yanma is the one occupying 193. | ||||||||
194 | Aipom | エイパム Aipom |
Gold sprite features an earlier version of Aipom's design, with a different ear design and a missing tuft of hair. Silver has a completely different pose, and uses Aipom's design from the Spaceworld 1997 demo. Interestingly, the backsprite appears to depict an earlier or alternate version of the early Gold design, as the ears are again differently shaped, and Aipom's tail is shown having five fingers instead of three. Aipom's dex number is 190 in the final games, while Wooper is the one occupying 194. Uses the Animal icon instead of the Rhydon icon. | ||||||||
195 | Wooper | マダーム Madaamu |

Uses the name of Tsuinzu, the scrapped Girafarig pre-evolution from Spaceworld '97, whereas its backsprite depicts another cut pre-evolution of Girafarig. Its moveset is similar to Girafarig's, and it can even evolve into it. Its red palette seems to be a leftover of Tsuinzu's previous design. The fact Wobbuffet has design similarities to the various Tsuinzu incarnations, in addition to sharing their Dex spot, and Psychic type suggests that Tsuinzu was reworked into Wobbuffet. Uses the Rhydon menu icon instead of the Gengar icon. | ||||||||

206 | Dunsparce | ノコッチ Nokocchi |
Both sprites showcase much simpler designs, which appear to be closer to classical depictions of the Tsuchinoko. Lacks the wings and drill tail, and the blue stripes are instead small black spots. The eyes are also much simpler, and the Gold sprite features a blue tongue which is never seen anywhere else. | ||||||||

216 | Teddiursa | ヒメグマ Himeguma |
Gold sprite appears to be a redrawn version of Honooguma's from the Spaceworld '97 demo. This, in addition to the similar Japanese names, suggest that Teddiursa might have been based on Honooguma's design. Silver has a completely different pose. Backsprite is similar to final, but was refined. All sprites use a yellow palette as opposed to a light brown one. | ||||||||
217 | Ursaring | リングマ Ringuma |
Both sprites match final. | ||||||||

Corsola occupies this Dex number in the final games, while Slugma was moved to 218. | ||||||||
223 | Remoraid | テッポウオ Teppouo |
Similar poses to final, but still using the Spaceworld '97 design. | ||||||||

Also apparent are the fish on its underside, which appear to be torpedo-like featureless fish rather than the Remoraid seen in the final design, as well as having two as opposed to just one. Moreover, only the proto Gold sprite depicts these "Remoraid" with a face. Uses the bird menu icon instead of the Magikarp icon. | ||||||||

Pokémon Species
Some of the Pokémon in this prototype use different species names when compared to final games.
Pokémon | Early Species | Final Species | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Ledian | ななつぼし Seven Star |
いつつぼし Five Star |
Only has five spots, though with its wings deployed it does appear to have seven of them, as one gets cut in half. |
Crobat | エックス X |
こうもり Bat |
Crobat was known as "エクシング" (X-ing) in the Spaceworld 1997 build of the games, hence the different species name. Was ultimately given the same category as Zubat and Golbat. |
Politoed | かわず Frog |
かえる Frog |
Uses a different, less common term for "frog". |
Wobbuffet | シャドー Shadow |
がまん Endurance |
Wobbuffet was originally a Girafarig pre-evolution named Tsuinzu, as seen in the Spaceworld 1997 build of the games, hence the different species name. |
Shuckle | やきも Pottery |
はっこう Fermentation |
Originally had a more vase/pot-like shell, hence the different species name. |
Sneasel | いたち Weasel |
かぎづめ Claw |
Originally looked more like a weasel, hence the different species name. |
Piloswine | いのぶた Pig-Boar |
いのしし Wild Boar |
Reuses Swinub's species name. |
Remoraid | ジェット Jet |
ふんしゃ Propulsion |
Uses a different term for jet. |
Octillery | ジェット Jet |
ふんしゃ Propulsion |
Uses a different term for jet. |
Suicune | あまのがわ Milky Way |
オーロラ Aurora |
The Japanese term for "Milky Way" is "Heavenly River", meaning that its wavy tail was originally meant to evoke the flow of water. In the final games, this was changed to the undulating form of an aurora borealis. |
Celebi | プラント Plant |
ときわたり Time Travel |
It appears to have already been envisioned as a Pokémon which has a relationship with nature. In this build of the games, however, it uses the Normal type as a placeholder. |
Footprints
As it turns out, some of the footprint graphics differ between the ones used in this prototype and the ones used in the final games.
This placeholder graphic can be seen used in the Pokédex entries for Chinchou, Azumarill, Sunkern, Wobbuffet, Corsola, and Celebi. In the final games, all these Pokémon were given their own unique footprint with the exception of Sunkern, as its finalized design lacks feet of any kind.
Tentacool uses a footprint which is shaped like the extremity of its tentacles, while it doesn't have any footprint in the final games (or in the rest of the franchise, for that matter).
Tentacruel uses a small, round footprint which seems a bit too small to represent the extremity of its tentacles. Much like with Tentacool, Tentacruel doesn't have any footprint in the final games (or in the rest of the franchise, for that matter).
Exeggcute, for some odd reason, uses a medium-sized round footprint despite it not having feet of any kind. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't have any footprint in the final games (or in the rest of the franchise, for that matter).
Interestingly, the footprint used by Lanturn appears to have been intended for Tsubomitto, as it matches the general shape of its feet. This makes sense as Lanturn was built off of Tsubomitto, reusing its name, typing, and back sprite, while Tsubomitto itself was still in the games' Pokédex as of June 1999, making it clear it had received a footprint of its own by then. In the final games, Lanturn doesn't have a footprint.
The footprint used by Forretress, meanwhile, appears to have been intended for Purakkusu, as it matches the general shape of its feet. This makes sense as Forretress was built off Purakkusu, reusing its name and back sprite, while Purakkusu itself was still in the games' Pokédex as of June 1999, making it clear it had received a footprint of its own by then. In the final games, Forretress doesn't have a footprint.
The footprint used by Wooper appears to have been intended for Madame, as it matches the general shape of its feet. This makes sense as Wooper was built off Madame, reusing its name, typing, back sprite, and menu sprite, while Madame itself was still in the games' Pokédex as of June 1999, making it clear it had received a footprint of its own by then. Interestingly enough, Wooper still uses this exact same footprint in the final games, despite having totally different feet. This oversight would later be fixed in subsequent games.
Piloswine | Slugma |
---|---|
Interestingly enough, the Spaceworld '99 version of Slugma (known there as "Mitei 10") uses a footprint which appears to be a larger version of the one used by Piloswine. This is due to Slugma having been built off of a short-lived cut Piloswine evolution, as seen by Piloswine evolving into it starting at Level 30. This is further seen by it also using the "Quadruped" menu sprite and the Ice/Ground typing, much like Swinub and Piloswine.
In the final games, Slugma doesn't have a footprint. Piloswine wouldn't get an evolution until Generation IV, in the form of Mamoswine.
SW'99 | Final |

Raticate has a slightly different footprint, incorrectly showing a four-toed foot instead of a three-toed one.
SW'99 | Final |
---|---|
Mew has a slightly longer footprint than in the final games.
SW'99 | Final |
---|---|
Furret has a slightly shorter footprint than in the final games.
SW'99 | Final |
---|---|
Marill has a slightly longer footprint than in the final games.
SW'99 | Final |
---|---|
Murkrow has a slightly different footprint, showing a two-toed foot instead of a three-toed one. This matches Murkrow's design in the Spaceworld '97 build and Spaceworld '99 Silver one. The footprint graphic was updated in the final games to reflect the updated foot design.
SW'99 | Final |
---|---|
Sneasel has a radically different design, namely with it featuring three toes instead of just two, as seen in its early design.
Evolutionary Requirements
Unlike the Spaceworld 1997 build of the games, this prototype does feature all the Pokémon seen in the final games. However, a handful of them were quickly built upon scrapped Pokémon, leaving a few entries with the sprite of one Pokémon, but the name and other data of another. This leaves Chinchou, Quagsire, Magcargo, and Pineco as single-stage Pokémon, due to Lanturn, Wooper, Slugma, and Forretress all retaining leftover evolutionary data. Sunkern also lacks an evolution method altogether, due to it then being a recent addition (as evidenced by its placeholder name, typing, and sprites).

Pokémon Types
A handful of Pokémon still have different types, mainly due to them being either placeholders or leftovers.
Pokémon | Early Typing | Final Typing | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Chinchou | Normal | Water/Electric | Uses the Normal type as a placeholder. |
Lanturn | Grass/Poison | Water/Electric | Reuses the typing of Tsubomitto. |
Sunkern | Normal | Grass | Uses the Normal type as a placeholder. |
Wooper | Normal/Flying | Water/Ground | Reuses the typing of Madame. |
Misdreavus | Ghost/Dark | Ghost | Reuses the updated typing of Norowara. |
Wobbuffet | Normal/Psychic | Psychic | Reuses the typing of Tsuinzu. |
Pineco | Grass | Bug | Has a completely different typing. |
Shuckle | Rock/Ground | Bug/Rock | Its Ground typing was replaced with the Bug typing. |
Slugma | Ice/Ground | Fire | Reuses the typing of the scrapped Piloswine evolution. |

Ho-oh | Normal/Flying | Fire/Flying | Uses Normal instead of Fire as its first type. |
Celebi | Normal | Psychic/Grass | Uses the Normal type as a placeholder. |
Cries
Unsurprisingly, some Pokémon cries are not yet finalized, with pitch differences and even some placeholders here and there.

Palettes
Unsurprisingly, most Pokémon had their palette finalized by the time this demo was compiled, with the only few outliers being the handful of Johto Pokémon which still had to be finalized. Namely, Furret, Azumarill, and Wobbuffet all reuse the palette of the Pokémon they overwrote (in that case, Gyopin, Hinaazu, and Tsuinzu respectively). As for the Slugma line, its case is a bit special, as Slugma and Magcargo pretty much swapped everything with one another, which also relates to their color schemes, with the latter originally being orange, and the former being pink (the exact same palette as the one used by Magcargo in the final games).
Shinies
Virtually all shiny Pokémon have been finalized by now, though a few outliers still remain. Interestingly, it's worth noting that Oddish, Gloom, Sunkern, Murkrow, Dunsparce, Corsola, Larvitar, and Pupitar all lack an actual shiny palette, as the one they are assigned to just consists of their base colors. This also happens to Azumarill, whose base palette was coincidentally later repurposed as its shiny palette. Magcargo, meanwhile, is rather interesting, as it is assigned Slugma's final shiny palette and vice-versa.
Oddly enough, the shiny palette assigned to Chansey has the lighter pink turned to a deep blue, while the darker pink stays the same. This improper palette causes the sprites to look messed up, and so it's likely that the darker pink was instead supposed to become blue, as seen below:
Standard | Shiny (Normal) |
Shiny (Mock-up) |
