General Differences

  • Level name difference: this zone is called Green Hill here, but is known as Emerald Hill in the final. The CENSOR prototype changed the title cards to match the final's level names, and Beta 7 changed the names used in the level select to match the names used during normal gameplay.
  • This is the last known build to feature the Snail badniks. They were replaced by Coconuts in later versions.
  • This is the only zone in the prototype to have a boss. Its behavior is identical to the Nick Arcade prototype, and defeating it will send the player back to the Sega logo screen. Hacking in a signpost or loading object $3A (the results object) takes the player to Wood Zone.

  • The Simon Wai prototype is the last known prototype that has the Snail badniks; Starting with the August 21st, 1992 prototype, Coconuts enemies start popping up all over the place.
  • Three rings were added before the first Coconuts enemy.
  • The Buzzer was moved more to the left, and another Coconuts was put in its place.
  • A shield monitor was placed on top of the hill.

  • The first waterfall was broken up into two waterfalls for some reason.
  • A Coconuts was added after the wooden bridge, and a yellow spring and Buzzer were added to the first floating cliff.
  • The red spring here is partially embedded in the wall in the Wai build; This was fixed by September 14th.
  • Five more rings were added to the slope on the lower path.

  • A small floating island was added to the upper path in Beta 4. There's nothing here yet, but in later Betas there are a few rings and a checkpoint on the island.
  • The Buzzer on the right was removed, replaced with a Coconuts enemy on the first tree on the left. A Speed Shoes monitor was added below that Coconuts.

  • On the lower path, three super ring monitors (One of them hidden in a wall) were placed, along with a set of retracting spikes on the bottom-left and five rings on the quarter-pipe.
  • Another Buzzer was added at the bottom right.

  • There's a diagonal yellow spring in this section starting in Beta 4. Its purpose is to launch the player into the newly added nine ring group at the top-left of the screen.
  • The vertical yellow spring was removed, making the floating island on the right harder to access. A Coconuts enemy was added to the tree the spring was once placed by.
  • Four sets of spikes were added to the ceiling of the lower path. Not that threatening, but they do fill up the empty space.

  • The oddly placed Buzzers (Leftover from the Nick Arcade layout) were repositioned, and now have a chance to actually harm Sonic & Tails. An extra Buzzer and Coconuts were added before the checkpoint, which is also new.
  • Three monitors, an Invincibility and two super rings, were added to the cliff on the top-left. Now there's a a reason to make the trip!

  • 35(!) more rings were added to the top path, as were a Coconuts badnik, a checkpoint, and a diagonal yellow spring.
  • The tunnel, which worked correctly in the Nick Arcade prototype but was blocked off in the Wai build, is now working properly again. The extra life monitor was moved more to the left, off of the waterfall. Oh, and the tunnel was opened up as well, adding six more rings to the level.
  • A single super ring monitor was added to the end of the lower path. Consider it a consolation prize.

  • Standard fare: Snail replaced with two Buzzers, four rings added to a slope, another Coconuts badnik. No big deal.

  • Two Coconuts now flank the spikes in this section.
  • The rings are higher above the spikes starting in Beta 4.

  • And Coconuts.

  • There are two new floating islands with rings and things starting in Beta 4. Of course, to actually get to the islands, they added a yellow spring and a vertically-moving floating platform.
  • Three new Buzzers give this area some added danger.
  • Another checkpoint was added on top of the second loop.

Sonic2EmeraldHill2SectionEBeta4.png
  • On the upper path, a super ring monitor was added to the top of one of the loops. Don't worry, though, because there's now a moving platform to actually get on top of the loops.

  • On this section of the lower path, two rings were added, one snail was removed. Apparently they're only worth two rings.

  • An added checkpoint. An added Coconuts. What's not to like?
Simon Wai prototype Beta 4

  • Even more super ring monitors? Why, thank you, Sega.
  • An added Buzzer atop the waterfalls? Sure, why not.

  • The big and small floating platforms, uninhabited in the Simon Wai prototype, are now full of rings and Coconuts starting in Beta 4. As if that wasn't enough, they added a Shield monitor atop the loop, and a checkpoint on the small floating island.

  • There's a checkpoint before the boss starting in Beta 4, as well as it should be.
