Proto:Splatoon 2/Global Testfire
This is a sub-page of Proto:Splatoon 2.
Before Splatoon 2's release, there was a demo released called the Splatoon 2 Global Testfire which allowed players to experience the online multiplayer of the game in several one-hour sessions.

Early Icons
Salmon Run Icons
An early version of the Salmon Icon shown in the menu where you select what mode you want to go to! It's colored to look more like a salmon, unlike the final where it's all one specific color.
The Egg also has an early icon! It has less detail than the final.
Tutorial Icons
Let's start off with an early Joy-Con Grip icon! Interestingly, the Joy-Cons themselves are black, despite there not being an official black variant of the Joy-Cons.
The early Switch icon looked more like a square than the proper shape.
Main Menu Icons
A few of the main menu icons differ from the final.

An early render of the Splat Dualies is also in the game.
Early Gear
The Testfire includes early versions of gear present in the final game.
Headgear
Hed_COP000~Hed_COP003
Early versions of the headgear worn by players in the Salmon Run game mode, all 4 files are the same but colored diferently.
Clothing
Clt_COP000
An early version of the gear used in the Salmon Run game mode. Unlike the headgear, this gear only exists in the orange color.
Clt_HAP001
A placeholder version of the Splatfest Tee Replica featuring the kanji for temporary (仮).
Early Weapons
This page or section needs more images. There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this. Specifically: Get model images and in-game screenshots. |
To do: Add explanations for all weapons. Possibly videos as well? |
Data for several early versions of weapons (and entirely cut weapons) are still present in the Testfire, with varying degrees of completion.

Playable Octolings
To do: Redo the renders. Also are these present in the final game as well? |
The playable Octolings that were later released in the Octo Expansion have early models present in the files for the Global Testfire. Both models seem to resemble the enemy Octolings from Octo Valley.
Octoling Boy
The Octoling boy uses a placeholder Inkling boy model with the rival Octoling eyes, along with unique eyebrows not seen in any of the other models. Although hard to see, it can be discovered that said eyebrows lack a special form of mapping used on most Inkling/Octoling playermodels, which is used to simulate lighting causing the eyebrows to take on a flatter appearance, although this can only be properly seen when viewed up close with certain colors applied to it such as slightly darker shades of greens and blues. An early version of the Octoling boy hairstyle also exists for it. The textures for the rival octoling boy hair are often found to be blurry and not of the same quality as most models. Because of these models and textures, we can assume that with some major edits to the models, this is what a male rival octoling would look like, something never before seen in the history of Splatoon, neither in concept art or in any iterations of the first or second game.
It can be loaded in-game using the debug menu, its appearance is shown below.
Octoling Girl
For whatever reason, like the Octoling boy, the Octoling girl also loads a placeholder Inkling model as well. Even stranger, the Octoling girl borrows the inkling BOY assets.
Same with the Octoling boy, the Octoling girl can also be loaded in-game with the debug menu, and is shown below. Like the rival male, the hair textures are also shown to be blurry and of a somewhat lower quality compared to the final counterparts. Unlike the rival male, the eyebrows and other smaller details appear to be intact
Early Map Previews
An early version of the map shown on the main menu.
Early Stage Previews
All the main new stages got their icons changed from this version to release.
The Reef
Early icon shows the layout from reveal footage, alongside having a different skybox and lighting setting, which bears a striking resemblance to how it was seen during the October 2016 Switch reveal trailer.
Testfire | Final |
---|---|
Mussleforge Fitness
Different lighting between the early and final icons, with the layout seemingly staying the same.
Testfire | Final |
---|---|
Starfish Mainstage
The early icon interestingly shows the stage with Sunset lighting, something that is normally only seen with Stages used in Missions during Single Player. The aiming reticle is also visible in it.
Testfire | Final |
---|---|
Humpback Pump Track
Different lightning and layout differences can be spotted in the early icon compared to the final.
Testfire | Final |
---|---|
Inkblot Art Academy
Main differences include the stage being a lot brighter, the main display platform being rotated differently, and the clam statue being made out of GeneralBox objects instead having an actual model.
Testfire | Final |
---|---|
Sturgeon Shipyard
Different lightning and layout differences can be spotted in the early icon compared to the final.
Testfire | Final |
---|---|
Spawning Grounds
Last but not least, Spawning Grounds also has an early picture! If you look near the center, you can see early Salmon Run gear.
Testfire | Final |
---|---|
Early Music
Early versions of battle themes by the in-game band Wet Floor could be heard in the Global Testfire. The version of "Inkoming!" that played in a match was an instrumental version, while the version with vocals played on the title screen. "Turf Master", the victory theme, is missing the guitar lick right before the song loops.

There are also several unused news quotes in the file TalkNewsStage.msbt. Marina was slightly sassier in the Testfire version.
The Reef

But I don't remember going to a cake shop.... | But I don't remember going to a cake shop... |
An interesting piece of unused dialogue found exclusively in Japanese. Not only seems does it seem to mention the Switch Event demo, but it also gives an apparent canonical reason as to why The Reef was revamped for the Testfire. In the final release, this was replaced with a completely different conversation.

Some of these seem to have been made in the middle of translating, as this quote still refers to Pearl by her Japanese name, "Hime," as well as including "Stay cool" instead of "Don't get cooked."

Early Weapon Kits
To do: There are some third (and fourth?) weapon kits listed in Param.pack for specific weapons. I'm not sure what they're for. |
Early weapon kits for every weapon in the game are listed in Param.pack. Every single weapon kit was changed in some way, with only a couple (Splattershot Jr., Jet Squelcher, Dynamo Roller) being exactly the same in the final. Some are unfinished, and use the Splat Bomb and Sting Ray as placeholders.
