...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.

Several localization prototypes of Super Mario 64 were found in the iQue Player leak, these builds mostly have only texture and model differences to accommodate the Chinese release. These builds seem to be uncompiled, but can be built using N64_SDK_RHL9_v2.iso on Red Hat 9 (shrike-i386).

General Differences

  • Being an early localization prototype, most of the game's script is left in English.

Title Screen

The logo retains its English title, albeit without the "64". The screen is also taken from the Shindou version.

The title screen's background is completely different compared to the final, and the "Press Start" text is still intact. Interestingly, the background texture has "BB" on it.

Pictured here is the Sound Select from this prototype, the colored text is from the Shindou release, though this difference is seen in every other option in this build.

Peach's Letter

The "桃花公主" is positioned differently, and Mario's name uses different characters.

Thank You Screen

The Thank You screen in this prototype is just the one from the Shindou release, which was edited for the iQue version.

The text on the Sound option is finalized, but the Score option's text was changed. The textures for the Colored letters are with the style of the original game, but are different.

The Options' Colored Text has been updated to Chinese, though the textures are still different from the final.

The logo used in this prototype is the exact same as the previous prototype.

The Title Logo's model has been finalized, albeit with different, corrupted-looking textures. It's still positioned to make space for the "64" seen in the original game and the copyrights are the same as the previous prototypes.

The File Select is the same as the previous prototypes, except that the Check Score text was changed back to it's earlier state, becoming finalized.

The Title Logo's textures have been changed to more closely resemble the original game's, though the darker outline on the colors are thicker than the final.

File Select

Everything seems to be the same as the previous build.

August 18, 2003

It is the same as the previous prototype, but has removed polygons on where the outline of the previous prototype was to edit the textures, and the model is now centered into its final position.
