Proto:The Getaway (PlayStation 2)
This page details one or more prototype versions of The Getaway (PlayStation 2).
PAL Demo
The PAL demo version of the game is dated 2 months before release and there are several notable changes between this build and the final builds.
The most obvious difference is the car that the kidnappers of Alex drive and is featured in the first cutscene - a modified Jaguar XJ12 in an attempt to avoid licensing the Jaguar XJ12. Other differences are the Ford Fiesta police cars seen blocking off various inaccessible streets throughout the city and the paintjobs of various traffic cars, from which the more noticeable differences are on the Toyota MR2. It also doesn't have the Rover 75 featured in the final builds of the game.
Mercedes-Benz 560SEC
Ford Fiesta (Royal Parks Constabulary Police Car) - Replaced completely by a police Peugeot 306 with the same livery in the final game.
Ford Transit (Metropolitan Police Van) - Different lightbar and no riot shield
Toyota MR2 - Minor differences in the model, very different textures and paintjobs, different wheels.
Vauxhall Vectra (Metropolitan Police Car) - Different textures and lights pattern, reused as cutscene model in the final game.
Preview Build
Built on Oct 25th, this is the earliest available full build. Dated almost one month after the first demo and one month before the final version, it has some relatively minor differences and unfinished pre-rendered cutscenes, as well as stability issues all around as crashes are a very often occurrence. There are some general similarities to the earlier demo such as more aggressive honking by the traffic cars, no police radio can be heard when you're near a police car and harsher damage settings. Gangs are directly shooting you on sight and wanted level is increased in free roam mode, on par with the missions. The Jaguar from the first mission cutscene is already replaced by the Rover 75 and none of the BMW's can be spawned, but the Police Fiesta is still available as it was replaced by the Peugeot really late on. Most of the cars are already replaced by their final counterparts, but MERC560 is still the same as the demo version, with the badge on the grille.
The pre-rendered cutscenes in this build are really early and it's possible that some are dating back to the August build.
