This is a sub-page of Proto:Tomba!.

Volume 8 of PrePre includes a very early demo of Tomba!, featuring some vastly different elements. Only Village of All Beginnings areas are playable, and the interior of the 100 Year Old Wise Man's house does not exist.

General

The title screen has a completely different background. Unlike the other demos, you can't view the movie from this menu.

  • The intro cutscene is shorter, and has an earlier version of Paradise (without vocals) playing.
  • The event screen has a few differences. For one, events not found appear as "...", whereas in the later editions they're blank. The font color used for "Event" is a single color, and a few touch ups have been made with positioning. You can't view the event information, since they've been blanked out. Exit is also part of the main box, and the Map has been crossed out. Most importantly, the event order is different, and a couple have slightly different titles.

  • The status screen has a couple of changes, including a lack of shadowing on the text. Most noticeably, this demo features the unused body type icon.

  • The 'A Lost Child' event icon lacks the tears found on the final.

  • The laugh and cry icons are a little bit different. The cry icon has a sad face that was later removed, and the laugh icon changes the eyes to appear more rounded.

Gameplay

  • The man who usually appears at the very beginning of the game is missing entirely. Instead, The 100 Year Old Wise Man quest begins immediately.
  • Using Up and Down on the D-Pad allows you to move the camera slightly in those directions. This was removed completely from all future demos and the final product.
  • Items cannot be used by the player. They are used by the game automatically.
  • Due to this, the tornado automatically attaches itself to Tomba, and follows him until it's used.

  • The map is missing from the menu. If forced into the option, the game retrieves a blank blue screen.
  • Tomba starts at the maximum 8 health. When hit, the entire segment disappears, instead of becoming hollow like in the final.
  • Tomba's sprite is different.

  • Tomba's jump cry is different from both the final and the other prototype.
  • Charles is not present, but the platform he rests on is. You can't reach this normally though, since the branch you swing off in the tree has also been removed (or maybe it hasn't been programmed just yet).

  • You can open the 100 Year Old chests even without the key.
  • When losing a life, Tomba does not roll onto his back. The tune doesn't play as long, either.
  • If Tomba is hit by an enemy with only one health point left but rolls into a health restore item, the game will play the usual 'life lost' tune but Tomba will get straight back on his feet. The enemy that hit him will lose all collision and become stuck in whatever pose he would have been in after the try again screen should have arrived.
    • Tomba will also not be able to enter doors after this, and certain events (such as the screen revealing the fog) will not activate.
  • The Peach Gas won't change a Koma Pig.

  • The fisherman has a completely different sprite. He has three frames (one for idle/speaking, plus two more for throwing the bananas to Tomba which go unused), whereas his final version has four for throwing and three for idle/speaking.

  • The Kokka Birds use a palette seen in an early video. Their sprites were overhauled for the final game. Good thing too, since some of their sprites have no eyes on them whatsoever.

  • Yan also has a completely different appearance which closer matches his official artwork. He also seems to gaze and talk to the player rather than Tomba.

  • The game ends when you reach the 100 Year Old Man's house, regardless of whether you picked up all the baby chicks or not.

Unused Graphics

  • Although Charles isn't actually in the demo at all, a single sprite for him is loaded in the VRAM for the Village of All Beginnings. It's similar to his final sprite, although several touch ups were made.

  • The fisherman has two additional arm sprites for when he throws the bananas to Tomba, but he never uses them.

Unused Events

Tomba-UnusedEvent-1.png One of the events, 大きな水たまり? (A big puddle?), is completely absent from the final, icon and all. It seems to suggest that Tomba would have to investigate a pool of water and listen in some way.

Tomba-UnusedBell.png This event icon goes unused.

Unused Text

PLAY DEMO and RANKING DEMO can be found with the rest of the demo's title text, but neither are used.

Oddities

There's a couple of strange textures underneath "Behind the Hut". They can only be seen by modifying the camera.
