The 1.0 RC1 Wii Menu has several text changes when compared to the final version 1.0.

US

1.0 RC1 Final
Erase. Erase?

Minor fixes for grammar.

1.0 RC1 Final
Copy to the Wii System Memory. Copy to the Wii System Memory?

Ditto.

1.0 RC1 Final
The answer to your secret question must be more than three letters. The answer to your secret question must be at least six letters.

Originally you could have a trivially short secret question answer. At least that's one thing they got right, considering the numerous security holes all over the darn console. Slight rewording has also been done.

1.0 RC1 Final
Please input the five digit Master Key. Please input the five digit master key.

Minor capitalization changes.

1.0 RC1 Final
Error Code: 00000 Error Code:

The placeholder error code was removed for some reason.

1.0 RC1 Final
Download new channels and Virtual Console games. Shop for Virtual Console games and new Wii Channels.

Reworded. Perhaps there wasn't enough branding.

1.0 RC1 Final
Unable to read the disc.

For details, read the Wii

Operations Manual.
Unable to read the disc.

Check the Wii Operations Manual

for help troubleshooting.

Slightly reworded to be a bit less formal and more friendly.

1.0 RC1 Final
An error has occurred. Press

the Eject Button and remove the disc, then turn the Wii console off and refer to the Wii Operations Manual for

help troubleshooting.

Press the Eject Button and remove the disc, then turn the Wii console off and refer to the Operations Manual

for further instructions.

1.0 RC1's text is identical to final version 1.0 found in some early executables, documented on the main Wii page.

1.0 RC1 Final
The Wii system memory is

damaged. Refer to the Wii Operations Manual

for further instructions.

I guess the Wii Operations Manual isn't ordering you around anymore. That's good.

1.0 RC1 Final
Add Register

This is for the Wii Message Board and was presumably retranslated for greater accuracy.

Pretty much every single error string was updated to implore the user to contact support.nintendo.com for assistance.

in the Wii System Memory. At least X blocks are required to

perform the Wii system update.

in the Wii System Memory. Unable to perform a Wii system update. Visit

support.nintendo.com for assistance.

For some reason, the exact number of blocks that needed to be freed to install the update was removed; it is worth noting that the X is improper string interpolation and would not easily work without directly replacing it once loaded.

Unable to connect to the Internet. Unable to connect to the Internet. Visit support.nintendo.com for assistance.

Seems slightly dubious that Nintendo could fix your Internet connection for you over the phone, but I guess some users were so hapless as to not be able to connect their Wii to the Internet to update it.

1.0 RC1 Final
No network connections have been

configured. Choose Internet settings,

then choose a connection.

Slightly more complex and here - "choose" in RC1 (which also doesn't really work in the context of this string) becomes the more contextually correct "set up" in 1.0.

This string is repeated three times for some reason. Perhaps used for hardware failures or some issue on IOS side.

"conencting". That's a new one. Typo was fixed.

Strangely, this has been made less formal.

Untranslated Strings

Some strings had simply not been translated from the original Japanese strings yet as of this build of the System Menu.

1.0 RC1 1.0
?0010_ENG_nunchaku? Please connect a Nunchuk to the Wii Remote.
1.0 RC1 1.0
?0011_ENG_classic? Please connect a Classic Controller to the Wii Remote.
1.0 RC1 1.0
?3104_ENG_UPDATE_BEGIN? Initiating a Wii system update. to the Wii Remote.
1.0 RC1 1.0
?3200_ENG_NO_Mii? No Miis have been registered.

Please use the Mii Channel to

create a Mii.

The latter is merely a placeholder for an untranslated string. For some reason the Nunchuk is called the "Nunchaku".

Strings added in 1.0

There are several strings that are simply not present in 1.0 RC1.

Wii Message Board data was
corrupted. The data has been
repaired, but some messages or
addresses may have been lost.
Hmmm...
To do:
Test corrupting the Wii Message Board data on RC1 and 1.0 to test this.

Perhaps the Wii did not have the automatic Wii Message Board repair capability in RC1?

:

Not sure what this is used for - perhaps simply as an hours/minutes separator?

Back

Not sure about this either.

Nintendo's Internet-based services
have not yet launched. Please check
back at a later date.

This string was never used - not even in Wii Menu 1.0. Perhaps the "launch it at 2.0" plan was only very briefly instituted?

There are no updates available for
this Wii since it already has the
most current system software.

It appears, based on the large number of nonexistent update-related strings, that the update functionality was substantially unfinished in 1.0 RC1.

Performing a Wii system update. Please wait
a moment. In some cases it may take up to
xx minutes. Do not turn the power off.

Ditto.

Unable to load Mii Channel data.
Please access the Mii Channel
and check Mii Channel data.

Presumably this diagnostic functionality wasn't implemented yet.

The information you entered
is incorrect. Please check the
information and try again.

Just an error string.

Aim the Wii Remote at the TV. Press
⊕ and ⊖ to adjust sensitivity
until only two blinking lights appear.

Calibration possibly unimplemented?

Enter a nickname for your Wii console.
Please enter something besides blank spaces.

More generic error strings.

Japanese

Hmmm...

  • Add the Japanese text differences here.
