Yellow shields
According to the article: "There is a bug which makes the Gold Shield a strange green/red color on some stages. They otherwise act normally."
I doubt this is a bug. The yellow shield sprite makes use of colors in the second object palette (fourth palette in CRAM, I think?). The zones that feature this shield have the relevant colors in this palette, but Rusty Ruins is not one such zone. In fact, the final version doesn't have any yellow shields at all, only blue and red ones.
Since the red shields are missing from this prototype, I'm going to guess that the yellow shield monitors were just placeholders. The red shield makes use of the same palette as the yellow shield, though it conflicts with some of its colors (meaning you can't have both shields in the same zone).
As for the monitor: those sprites are always using Sonic's palette, which is the same for all zones. That's why the monitor sprite has the right color even though the shield itself doesn't. Why didn't they use that palette for all the shields is beyond me.
If anybody agrees I may change the article accordingly (unless you do it first =P).
