How would we do that? Sp0nge80b (talk) 19:25, 6 March 2017 (EST)

A discussion with Matt Simmonds over the changes to the OST

Here are some DMs I had with Matt Simmonds on Soundcloud back in 2017, mostly asking about the creative process of making the music and why some tracks were changed.

Matt Simmonds music

Hi,

No problem I can answer some questions.

For research I was given some show episodes to watch to get the feel of the music and sound fx.

We weren't allowed to use any music from the series or the theme. In game dev there are varied reasons why this happens, as an example if the music isn't owned wholly by the franchise owner then that's separate license terms and payment to deal with. Sometimes because it's just one element of the game development it's preferred to write something 'in the style of' the show but wholly original melody-wise. I don't know the details of why we couldn't use the music for this project, I was just told to write new music. :)

Didn't have any direct feedback from Nickelodeon, with licensed titles the rights holder will usually have an ongoing list of things they want tweaked across the whole game, to keep the project "on brand" and to a level of quality they're happy with. So I guess they were happy with the music. PS1 was the lead title as far as I know, the reason we went with sequenced samples was so we could use the disc for streaming speech instead. We did the same thing with the first Power Rangers game soundtrack.

Can't really remember much about working on the soundtrack except the new theme was written in an hour or so, had to do it at the last minute.

Hope that's useful,

thanks, Matt.

[Asked a question about the arrangement of the shows theme found on dev discs, and other motifs using music taken from the show absent in the final game]

Ah yeah I remember doing that instrumental version, there were a couple other tracks from the series I converted too but we weren't allowed to use them in the end. That's also why the options music has different samples now because we couldn't use authentic instruments out of the real soundtrack. It also meant I had to go back and re-factor a couple of the game melodies that had nods to the theme song in them, just changing a few notes here and there. The new title track was done in about an hour right at the end of production.
