Couple things to mention
First off, I'd like to mention that the creators of Plok (The Pickfords), contacted Nintendo at the same time of this prototype. They wanted to see if Nintendo wanted to assist with the SNES game's development, but got turned down due to a similar game with a similar concept (this very prototype) being in development. Otherwise the company would have definitely picked up Plok.
Second, Stage 2 doesn't have sprite scaling. It's actually a background effect, which can be seen by disabling BG Layer 1. In other words, it's very likely just a rotating flat 3D object.
