Hmmm...
To do:
  • Internal project name is "Hippo"
  • English, Spanish, and French text differences between the US and European versions.

After fifteen long years of waiting, Punch-Out!! was finally brought into stores again, bringing the all-familiar boxers back into the ring once more. It also introduced a two-player mode and a few internet memes.

Under the art/fe folder is a file called mc_banner.tpl, which features the GameCube banner image for Super Mario Strikers (also developed by Next Level Games).

Unused Music

An unused looping track. Like many of the game's tracks, it's loosely based on the main Punch-Out!! theme. Its purpose is unclear, but it sounds as if it could be related to the Wii Fit Tutorial.

Remasters of the jingles from the NES version of Punch-Out!! for winning and losing a fight that doesn't come to use at any point. They seem to be related to the Minor Circuit, which is odd since circuits don't normally have winning or losing themes; the character-themed songs are used instead.

Localization Note

Found immediately after the copyright notice string ("All Rights, including the copyrights of Game, Scenario, Music and Program, reserved by NINTENDO.") in ukenglish.loc is a note for the game's localization teams:

Do not edit this. Only english is needed.

Obscured Graphics

PunchOutWii-SMPanelsLeft.png PunchOutWii-SMPanelsRight.png

Between rounds in Title Defense, Piston Hondo is shown reading the Sailor Moon manga, but the panels are not arranged exactly like its source material. However, the camera never gives a clear focus on the panels in question, thus the Sailor Moon panels are never fully visible in-game. This was changed to a generic manga in the Japanese release a few months later.

Oddities

  • Disco Kid's files are internally labeled as "kidquick", which has led some to believe that he is actually Kid Quick from the original Arcade game, despite promotional materials treating him as a "new character".

Regional Differences

In the NTSC version, title defense Soda Popinski can be knocked out, just like his contender counterpart. This however cannot be done in the PAL version of the game for some reason (the player has to TKO him or win by decision), making this fight harder.
