This cactus is UNDER CONSTRUCTION
This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
Hmmm...
To do:
Check different European Demos and continue investigating game files

Despite a graphics downgrade and reduced campaign, this version of Quake II is closer to the PC original, while offering features of its own like colored lighting with lens flares, two exclusive enemies and using the soundtracks from both the original game and the Ground Zero expansion.

Unlike its sibling on the Nintendo 64, the levels from this version weren't included in the 2023 remaster. However, the exclusive Arachnid and Guardian enemies would be featured, but only the former was used in any levels with the later regulated to appearing in the id Vault.

Symbol File

Acactussayswhat?
Please elaborate.
Having more detail is always a good thing.

The US version contains symbol file MAIN.SYM, dated September 23, 1999.

Unused Text

The game executable (both from US and European releases) mentions some levels, which don't exist in game (the Gallery levels are probably leftover from the PC version)

Some weapons (and their ammo) from the expansions, namely the Ion Ripper from The Reckoning and the Antimatter Bomb from Ground Zero, which don't exist in the PlayStation port.

Hmmm...
To do:
Which weapons does "Discharger" and "FlameGun" refer to?

Development-related string about memory card bug (probably related to Ray Donelly).

Regional Differences

  • The US and European versions has changes in soundtrack (due to different QUAKE_A.XAI, other music files are the same). Both versions of QUAKE_A.XAI have Rage track, but other three tracks are different.
  • The US version uses counterpart of this file from February 22, 1999, and it also contains Kill Ratio (which presented only in US version) and duplicates of The Underworld and Descent Into Cerberon (these songs also exist in QUAKE_B.XAI).
  • The European version uses counterpart from July 16, 1999 (other music files have same date), and contains Climb, Showdown, Pressure Point 2, which presented only in this release.
