This is a sub-page of Quest for Glory: So You Want to Be a Hero (1989).

Kobold Cave

The Kobold Cave went through a complete re-build, changing nearly everything in the text files, even re-defining what text files would be used.

Anything marked in red are duplicate lines. The rest are changes.

Hero's Quest Version

text.015
0 You seem to have bumped into an unseen object on the cave floor.
1 You examine it by touch. It feels like a wooden chest.
2 It must have been made invisible by the Kobold.
text.115
0 Uh oh! The Kobold doesn't look very calm.
text.118
0 The Kobold casts a spell with which you are not familiar.
text.122
0 Well, you THOUGHT all was calm. Maybe it was just YOU that got calmed. Or maybe the Kobold just CALMLY blasted you into oblivion. Maybe he really doesn't want to talk about it.
1 You lost your concentration when you contemplated changing fighting modes. The Kobold managed to blast you out of the game.
2 The power of the Kobold Wizard's magic overcomes you. The best defense against such power would have been a good strategy.
text.124
0 You now have the Kobold's key. Nice work!
text.125
0 As you look across this section of the cave, you see a Kobold resting on a ledge across from you.
1 "You go! You no stay here!"
2 "No talk! You GO!"
3 There is a strong aura of magic around the key you have taken from the Kobold.
4 There is a strong aura of magic around the key hanging from the Kobold's neck.
5 There is magic in the key left behind by the Kobold.
6 You see the outline of a chest glowing in a corner of the cavern.
7 You can detect faint glimmerings of magic from the remains of the exploded chest.
8 There is no magic here any more.
text.126
0 He's not a happy Kobold.
1 Quit sightseeing and watch what you're doing!
2 C'mon! He's not going to KILL you...
   is he?
3 Later! Later!
4 Of course!
5 In other words, keep fighting!
6 You're a little too busy at the moment.
7 Now??
text.129
0 You weren't able to take the full force of the blast from the magically booby-trapped Kobold's chest.
1 Wow! The chest must've been booby-trapped. You can really feel the damage from the blast.
2 The invisible chest's invisible lid lifts.
3 You add ten gold and sixty silver pieces to your money pouch.
4 You pry at the sealed lid of the chest, and...
5 You hack and pry at the chest, but it seems to be stronger than you are.
6 Your fingers shift slightly, and...
text.809
0 You've already opened all that can be opened in here.
1 You're too busy right now!
2 Now??
3 There are no spells left to trigger.
4 The Kobold is still blind from your last Dazzle spell. Act quickly!
5 Ding, dong, the Kobold's dead. Why bother?
6 One thing at a time, hero!
7 Just walk over and get what you want.
8 The Kobold's magic blocks your spell.
9 Shhhh! You'll probably just wake up the Kobold.
10 It'd just make the Kobold madder.
11 Perhaps something more potent than a rock is in order.
12 What for?
13 You're too close.
14 It would serve no purpose.
15 You have no weapon.
16 There is no one to fight here anymore.
17 You're already fighting!
18 Now's not a good time to attempt to communicate.
19 Who are you talking to?
20 Why bother?
21 Too late for that now!
22 Your footsteps echo loudly in this cave. You'd better practice some more before you'll be able to sneak in here.
23 They're like stalagmites, but they go the other way.
24 They're like stalactites, but they go the other way.
25 This part of the cavern is spacious and multi-leveled.
26 Resting on a rocky platform above the cave floor is a Kobold, one of the race of ugly, miserly magicians.
27 There seems to be a crude table at the base of the platform.
28 There is a lot of activity at present.
29 The Kobold seems agitated.
30 The stalactites grow slowly.
31 ...or are they stalagmites?
32 The stalagmites grow slowly.
33 ...or are they stalactites?
34 The stalactites, stalagmites, and cave walls glow from a phosphorescent fungus growing there.
35 Looking back the way you came, you see a faint reflection of the distant sunlight from the cave entrance.
36 Something is lying in a pile on the table. Mushrooms? Toadstools??
37 They look almost edible... if you're a Kobold.
38 There are numerous gold and silver pieces in the chest.
39 Where the chest was, you see many pieces of silver and gold.
40 The chest is invisible.
41 You don't see anything like that.
42 You once had a key.
43 The key around the creature's neck seems to emit light. You strongly suspect that it is magical in nature.
44 The key lies on the stone where you last saw the Kobold.
45 The key is no longer there! Perhaps you should have gotten it while you had the chance.
46 The strange creature is wearing ragged clothes.
47 There is what looks like a key hanging around its neck.
48 The creature does not seem pleased to see you.
49 This creature is DANGEROUS!
50 He's gone.
51 The key doesn't open the chest. It must be for something else.
52 What is the purpose?
53 How?
54 Huh?
55 You attempt to smash your way into the invisible chest!
56 You can see no lock to pick.
57 You have no way of doing that.
58 You attempt to pick the lock on the invisible chest. This'll be tricky!
59 You retrieve the key you dropped.
60 The key is no longer here.
61 VERY carefully, you remove the key from around the Kobold's neck.
62 You'll have to be careful if you want to get the key!
63 You'll have to kill the Kobold first.
64 You take the key.
65 The fungus is slimy and stuck tight to the cave walls.
66 You're kidding, right?
67 You pick up several of them and put them away.
68 It's too heavy.
69 It's gone.
70 How are you going to do that?
71 You add ten gold and sixty silver pieces to your money pouch.
72 There is no treasure to take.

Quest for Glory Version

text.015
0 You add ten gold and sixty silver coins to your money pouch.
1 You don't have time for that.
2 The Kobold seems more interested in frying you with Ball Lightning than in talking to you.
3 You'd better not. This cave is not recommended by the Michelin Guide.
4 You don't have time for that now.
5 You can't reach the key from here.
6 You take the Kobold's glowing key.
7 The Kobold won't let you near his key.
8 VERY carefully, you remove the key from around the Kobold's neck.
9 Uh oh. You weren't stealthy enough. You have awoken the Kobold.
10 You already have the key.
11 You retrieve the dropped key.
12 The key is gone.
13 The chest is far too heavy to move.
14 You've already taken the treasure.
15 You are too far away to get the Kobold's treasure.
16 You will have to open it first. The chest seems to be locked.
17 The key doesn't fit in the chest. It must be for a different lock.
18 You don't see any locks here.
19 The chest is already open.
20 You have no skill at picking locks.
21 You don't see a chest here.
22 No time for that now!
23 You pick up the Kobold's mushrooms and put them in your pack.
24 The fungus is slimy and firmly attached to the cave walls. You'd better leave it there.
25 Looking back the way you came, you see a faint reflection of the distant sunlight from the cave entrance.
26 The stalactites look much like the stalagmites, except that they go the other way.
27 This part of the cavern is spacious and multi-leveled. Phosphorescent fungus illuminates the cavern with an unearthly glow.
28 On a rocky platform above the cave floor is a Kobold, one of the race of ugly, miserly creatures known for their skill in Magic.
29 The Kobold's large, brass key glows slightly in the dark cavern.
30 Some sort of food (mushrooms?) sits in a pile on the stone table. It looks almost edible... to a Kobold.
31 The Kobold's dinner table is now bare.
32 The strange creature is dressed in ragged clothes. It has large, pale eyes. It must have spent its entire life in these caves!
33 A large, brass key hangs from a thong around the creature's neck.
34 The Kobold has disappeared entirely. You are not sure whether you killed him, or whether he escaped by some sort of spell.
35 Where the chest was, you see numerous pieces of gold and silver.
36 There is no sign of any other treasure in the cavern.
37 You don't *see* any treasure here.
38 The chest is empty.
39 The chest contains numerous pieces of gold and silver.
40 You will have to open the chest first. It seems to be locked.
41 Nothing useful remains of the chest.
42 You cannot see the chest, but it feels fairly large, and is too heavy to carry.
43 You don't *see* a treasure chest here.
44 The damp floor is too slippery for you to run safely.
45 Just try to walk out of the cave while you still have time.
46 That's what you're doing. Keep going!
47 There are no monsters here to attack.
48 How embarrassing. You don't have a weapon with which to fight!
49 You're too close to the Kobold for throwing to be practical.
50 You cannot make the arcane gestures to cast spells while carrying your shield.
51 There's nothing to open here.
52 There are no passive spells to trigger here.
53 You don't need to cast Fetch -- everything here is in easy reach.
54 You just bumped into something on the floor. It feels like a large wooden chest, but you don't see anything there.
55 Wow! The chest must have been booby-trapped. You can really feel the damage from the blast.
56 "You go! You no stay here!"
57 Your foot slips on the wet cavern floor and makes a scuffing noise.
58 The Kobold casts a spell with which you are not familiar.
59 Next time you swing at innocent inanimate objects, make sure you are strong enough to survive when they swing back at you!
60 You could not withstand the force of the blast from the Kobold's magically protected chest.
61 You are overcome by the power of the Kobold Wizard's magic. You need to either practice your skills more or plan a better attack strategy.
62 This section of cave has an eerie quality.
text.113
0 A strong magical aura radiates from the Kobold's key.
1 You see the outline of a chest glowing in the south end of the cavern.
2 You can detect a faint glimmering of magic from the shattered remains of the chest.
3 There no longer seem to be any magical effects or spells active in this part of the cavern.
text.114
0 The Kobold doesn't look very calm. In fact, it looks totally unaffected by your spell.
1 Uh oh, you've woken the Kobold.
2 You now have the Kobold's key. Nice work!
text.115
0 The invisible lid of the invisible chest lifts. A ripple of magical heat in the air informs you of a trap narrowly avoided by your skillful use of the Open spell.
text.116
0 You pry at the sealed lid of the chest, and...
1 You hack and pry at the chest, but you are not strong enough to force its lid.
2 You hear a very satisfying "Snick" as your pick catches the lock just right. Then you sense powerful magics dissipating around the lock, and your hands shake as you realize you have narrowly avoided some sort of Magical Doom.
3 Your fingers shift slightly, and you feel an odd prickling sensation coming from the lock. You have a bad feeling about this.

Everything Else

When lines are removed/added to text files, the line #'s are all adjusted to fit these changes. Example: If Line #20 is added to a file, the old #20 becomes 21, and everything below it also shuffles down one. Same for a removed file. #21 would become #20 and everything below it would also be shuffled up one. For purposes of organization, changes and edits will be mentioned before line removals/addons.
