One of the very first attempts at games being officially modified to cater for the Latin American market (outside of Brazil, that is), with a special Spanish-language version produced for sale in Mexico replacing Riddick Bowe with El Gran Campeón Mexicano himself, Julio César Chávez.

Copyright

In the Japanese version, an additional title card is displayed dedicated to Japanese publisher Micronet, before switching to a slightly simplified version of the normal copyright titlecard that replaces Malibu Interactive's logo with plain text.

In the Latin American version, Extreme Entertainment Group is bumped down to plain text in the copyright spiel, with American Softworks Corporation taking the logo spot.

Starting Boxers

Other than obviously changing the main boxer's face, for some reason the boxer on the left was turned white in Chavez.

Riddick Bowe Boxing Leftovers

Riddick Bowe Boxing showed Bowe's career statistics if you let the game sit in the title screen for a while. There's no such thing in Chavez, but the text is still present at 0xC3C3 in the ROM. The text is stored out of order.

Secret Boxers

In Bowe Boxing, there are two secret user-created boxers called RIKKY and IIIAN. These were changed to AXY and SPOT in Chavez. Axy and Spot were the pseudonyms of two popular Club Nintendo magazine editors. There's also a 3rd user-created character called FRIEDA, in Bowe Boxing it just results in a regular Riddick Bowe character, but in Chavez it creates a blue colored Chavez.
