Hmmm...
To do:
  • More regional differences.
  • Look into the prototype of the unreleased US build that has been dumped.
  • Look for the unused Chai model in the files.
  • A prototype build from Game Jam 2001 has been leaked, search for any unused content.
  • Document the early MAP0.
  • Look into the motion viewer.
So very stubbly.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

Shenmue II is the sequel to Shenmue. It released in 2001 for the Dreamcast in Japan and Europe, but not in America as Microsoft made a deal with Sega to have Shenmue II as well as other Sega games be released exclusively on Microsoft's upcoming console the Xbox. It would eventually come to the Xbox in 2002.

Warning Messages

Disc Japanese Audio

Similarly to the first Shenmue, there are unique warning messages for inserting the disc in anything other than the Dreamcast; unlike the first game, these only exist in Japanese releases. PAL copies of Shenmue II use a generic warning message.

Developer Text

A bunch of text for various debug aspects can be found inside 1ST_READ.BIN. Unless noted otherwise, all text below was found in the European version.

Unused Loading Screens

At one point in development, Shenmue II was supposed to have another area named Miao Village. A temple was going to exist in the area as well, but it got cut out due to it lacking any meaning to the actual story. Shenmue II's "Game Jam" prototype build from April 2001 also features a placeholder loading screen, which notably lacks any "Now Loading" text or in game time/date.

Regional Differences

European version changes

  • The CD warning messages from the Japanese version were replaced with a more generic multi-lingual warning message for the European version.
  • A statue of Mary holding baby Jesus was changed to just a statue of Mary.
  • An NPC named Hassan, an Arabian with a Muslim headdress, was altered to show no involvement in the Muslim religion. Given the existence of the near-final US localization build dated just about three days later with this particular change present, it is not certain if this was changed due to 9/11.
  • In the original Japanese version Yuan was a cross-dressing man, but was strangely changed to be a Japanese-speaking woman in this version.
  • In the Japanese version when Ryo is listening to the cassette tapes to find information, one of the recordings in the tape has a conversation that was deemed too sexual and was changed in later releases.

Bonus Content

An omake folder is present on the discs. Disc 1 contains HTML pages titled Shenmue Goodies 2 with small chibi portraits and animated images, like those the Shenmue 1 Passport provided online in its Shenmue Goodies part for a VMU and names of the included characters, including 2 unused characters, who do not have names listed. The names of their files are OSY and SIY
Disc 2 contains HTML pages with character profiles of Ryo, Shenhua, Xiuying, Joy, Fangmei, Ren, Lan Di, Guizhang and Wong, which include developer commentary and concept art.
Disc 3 contains HTML pages of a CG gallery, where you can download desktop wallpapers (1024x768) of various characters from Shenmue 1 and 2.
Disc 4 contains HTML pages of a movie gallery, where you can watch a "closing movie for the GAME JAM" and a special promotional use movie.
