Out of Bounds Objects
Scenery
"A Hazardous Path" has a bubble of lava impaled by a stalactice floating out of bounds. It can be found off to the right from the start of the level.
Pickups
A coin and a lucky charm can be found floating below the dojo in "Flame Fu!"
There is a coin stored below the level in "A Daring Rescue".
3 coins are stored directly below the tower in "Sinking Peril".
Alarms
| To do: Screenshots of these alarms |
In "A Strange Reunion", during phase three of the Clockwerk fight, a blaring alarm can be found below the lava. This is the alarm that controls the laser beams in the platforming section of the level.
There is also an alarm stored out of bounds in "The King of the Hill".
Unused Bentley Dialogue
Bentley has several voice lines that aren't used in the final game. These lines were not localized into any other languages.
Powerups
Short Range Teleport
This powerup would have allowed you to set a waypoint anywhere in a level and teleport to it at will. The filename is vapup2teleportbnt.vag, suggesting it may have been the second powerup unlocked. For some reason, the audio is repeated twice.
Sly! It's another page from the Thievius Raccoonus! Fantastic! You've uncovered Caroline Cooper's SHORT-RANGE TELEPORT POWER! Press &2T&. to set a tele-raccoon point, then hit &2T&. again to return to it. Looks like you need to have your feet on the ground to use this power. Switch between your power-ups using &2l&. and &2r&.
Spatial Relocator
This powerup would have allowed you to teleport between the checkpoints in a level. The filename is vapup9checkbnt.vag.
Fantastic! It's Hokyo Coo-poh's BIZARRE SPATIAL RELOCATOR! This move allows you to teleport between a level's checkpoints. Press &2T&. to return to your last checkpoint, and keep teleporting near checkpoints to move forward and backward through their order. You can move throughout a level in no time with this skill. It's incredibly useful for hunting down those few missing clues.
Clue Collection
This master thief technique behaves like coin magnet, but for clue bottles. While it is active, bottles will break when you get near them without actually touching them. The filename is vapup12cluebnt.vag.
This powerup is not unlockable in-game, but it can be enabled in the NTSC version by using a memory editor to change bit 0 at address 2027DC12 to 1.
Excellent! A special CLUE COLLECTION TECHNIQUE developed by Darrell de la Coopeur! From now on, you'll automatically collect any clues you come near. Which is nice.
Vaults
An unused vault combination, 3-2-0. Some background noise can be heard on the recording. The filename is vcom320.vag.
These lines feature Bentley telling Sly he needs to collect more clues before he can open a vault. They are called vgmt.vag and vgol.vag, respectively.
Treasure in the Depths
This audio file is called ripi09.vag, which is a reference to uw_rip_off, the internal name for the level "Treasure in the Depths". This line is unused because the number of chests you need to collect in this level never changes.
Unused Music
It is unknown where this music was going to be used.
Unused Text
This unused dialogue subtitle can be found in RAM in the level Prowling The Grounds. It answers Bentley's earlier question as to why Raleigh would want a storm machine. The line may have been scrapped due to the answer being obvious, or to leave it up to the player's intrepetation.
So that is what the storm machine is all about. By destroying ships at his front door, it's only a short hop to steal the cargo.
Debug Codes
Found within in the game's memory are several debug codes that went undiscovered for nearly 18 years.[1] There are 9 codes in total, and the developers have confirmed that these were debug features that were meant to be removed before the game's official release.[2]
All the codes start with Down L2 R2 X Down L2 R2 X Left Circle and the ending varies. The codes are as followsː
Unlock All Levels
Instantly unlock all worlds, all levels in map view, and set each hub to its final state (all keys unlocked). If you are in the Hideout, it will also automatically reload. Once you save, this is permanent on your file.
Down L2 R2 X Down L2 R2 X Left Circle Triangle
Unlock All Thief Moves
Instantly unlock all thief moves. You can still open vaults, but they will be empty and will not get marked as completed on your file. Once you save, this is permanent on your file.
Down L2 R2 X Down L2 R2 X Left Circle Down
Collect Clue Bottles
Instantly collect all clue bottles in the current level. The bottles will disappear from the world and you will be able to open the vault immediately. Once you save, this is permanent on your file.
Down L2 R2 X Down L2 R2 X Left Circle Up
Infinite Lucky Charms
Gives Sly infinite recovery from damage. The lucky charm may not appear on Sly’s back, but he will always get one automatically every time he takes damage.
Down L2 R2 X Down L2 R2 X Left Circle Circle
Slippery Objects
This code adds slippery physics to certain game objects. Currently, the only known effects are that clue bottles will slide down slopes, and barrels will slide on slopes or when pushed.
Down L2 R2 X Down L2 R2 X Left Circle Right
Reload + Slippery Guards
This code reloads the current level and lowers the gravity value for guards. The effect is very subtle, but you can observe it in action if you can get a guard to follow you close to a ledge and then run off. They will slip and fall off the ledge with you.
Down L2 R2 X Down L2 R2 X Left Circle Left
Reload + Disable Cheats
This code will reload the current level and disable the effects of the Infinite Lucky Charms, Slippery Objects, and Slippery Movement codes.
Down L2 R2 X Down L2 R2 X Left Circle START
Level Reload Code
This code will reload the current level. It does not change or do anything else.
Down L2 R2 X Down L2 R2 X Left Circle SELECT
"Chetkido" Password
Entering this code under very specific conditions will cause a message to popup in the corner of the screen that reads, "The password isː chetkido". The four conditions are:
- Be in the level Perilous Ascent
- Have 100% on your save file
- Have 99 coins
- Have 0 lives left
It it unknown what this password was ever intended to be used for. When asked what it means, one of the developers stated it was merely an inside joke among the dev team that was left in by mistake.[3]
Down L2 R2 X Down L2 R2 X Left Circle Square Square Square
God Mode
There is a debug flag in the game's memory that, when set, grants Sly total invincibilty. While this so-called God Mode is enabled, Sly will ignore all damage, he will never be knocked back by guards or level hazards, and he will always have Water Safety and Fall Safety.
The 2002 E3 demo build has a debug code to enable God Mode, but there is no known way to enable it in the final game without the external tools. To enable it in the NTSC version, use a memory editor to change bit 0 at address 20262C64 to 1.
Unused Developer Commentary
Developer commentary can be unlocked for a level by defeating the Master Thief Sprint (aka time trial) for that level. The following developer commentaries can be found in the game's data, but these levels do not have Master Thief Sprints to unlock them.

Regional Differences
The Japanese version has a demo reel of the game that plays after being inactive on the title screen. This was made an unlockable bonus in the American version.
A unique theme song called "BLACK JACK" by Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra can also be heard in the Japanese version, which plays both during the demo reel and the credits.
Anti-Piracy
If the game successfully finds a difference in the compiled code, or detects that the player is using an illegal copy, the following anti-piracy measures will take effect:
- Pressing the Circle button when jumping to grab a rope or hook does nothing, making climbing impossible.
- The Van's speed is decreased, preventing you from accelerating.
- The Hover Blaster's cannon is disabled, making the shooter levels impossible.
- 20% of clue bottles will disappear from the level, making it impossible to unlock vaults.
- The Key counter does not increase when collecting a key, making areas that require keys inaccessible.
- There will be an invisible wall of fire in "Into the Machine", making the level impossible to complete.
