To do:
  • Add all unmentioned stuff from each software update.
  • Stage icons for Spawning Grounds were changed in 3.0.0 because the pre-3.0.0 icon had some decorations in the top-left partly transparent. This also changed all the ink in the icons.
  • Verify that the 2.1.1 Crater/Alterna exit text is correct (in the 3.0.0 unlisted changes section).
  • Unused dummy stage icons were updated in 3.0.0 to be displayed in place of Fresh Season 2023's stage icons in the schedule after updating, but before the season began proper. The new icons are just a "???" in front of a black background.
    • 4.0.0, Sizzle Season 2023 did not use these dummy icons in-game after the update, but before the season began. SplatNet 3 did use the icons though. Jammin' Salmon Junction in-game before 4.0.0 used a unique placeholder image of a "?" in front of a squid and octopus pattern.
  • Wave Breaker effects were changed in version 5.1.0?
  • Add unused content in the game's files that was added/removed in the game's updates.
    • Sky_Test02 was a sky presumed to be for Big Run added in 1.2.0 and removed in 2.0.0. (OatmealDome)
    • The sky for Um'ami Ruins was added in 1.2.0, then removed in 2.0.0, and then readded again when its stage debuted in 3.0.0.
  • The copyright year was removed at some point.

1.1.0 (2 September 2022)

The initial preload release of Splatoon 3, which like in the day 1 patch of the previous game, added a majority of the data outside of single-player and activated online functionality. To see all the changes between 1.0.0 and 1.1.0, check out the version differences page for changes made between 1.0.0 and 1.1.0. Be warned, it's a LOT.

1.1.1 (16 September 2022)

The first post-launch software update, fixing several bugs related to online multiplayer, Salmon Run, and single-player.

Changes to Splatfests

  • The rate of Tricolor Battle occurrence has been adjusted. From the defending team’s perspective, they will trigger somewhat less frequently than before.
    • This was done due to a coincidence with old Sturgeon Shipyard Tricolor being unbalanced (as seen below). Therefore, the chance of Tricolor Turf War occuring was lowered from 22% down to 2% for the first post-launch Splatfest (Gear vs. Grub vs. Fun).

Changes to Player Controls

  • Fixed an issue where it was possible to jump farther than usual with a Squid Roll by performing a certain input while charging a Squid Surge.
  • Fixed issues that appeared when playing for a long time without closing the software, such as shots from the player’s main weapon not firing correctly.
  • Fixed an issue where the player could move through the surface of the water or stand on water when moving quickly. For example, when performing a Dodge Roll with Splat Dualies.

Changes to Multiplayer

  • Fixed an issue where connection errors occurred with high frequency at the end of battles due to connection environment.
    • (Added 9/19) Note: As a result of this fix, there may be cases where a player’s Rank Points or rank seem to be unchanged when viewed in the lobby after a match. That information will be updated if the player exits and reenters the lobby.
  • Fixed an issue with the Bloblobber where the collision detection of the third and fourth blobs of a single volley became extremely small.
  • Fixed an issue where cash and experience were not being awarded in certain circumstances when a battle ended early due to a lack of players.
  • Fixed an issue where, in certain modes, a player would be unable to cancel matchmaking when not enough other players were gathered. Matchmaking will now be canceled automatically after a certain amount of time has passed (180 seconds).
  • Fixed an issue in Sturgeon Shipyard in which it was possible to enter the back side of certain drawbridges.

Changes to Salmon Run

  • Fixed an issue where connection errors occurred with high frequency at the end of jobs due to connection environment.
  • Fixed an issue with Mudmouth Eruption events in which Mudmouths moved in unintended ways.
  • Fixed an issue that caused some players with identical titles to be considered “rank supporters” and not gain Rank Points.
  • Fixed an issue where continuously damaging a submerged Maws with certain special weapons would cause the game to crash.
  • Fixed an issue where players were becoming trapped within the stage terrain.
  • Fixed an issue where, at the end of battle, the amount of Grizzco Points earned would be shown as smaller than the amount actually added to save data, which caused cases where the player could not collect rewards.
  • Fixed an issue where the messages at the beginning of Wave 3 could change based on whether or not a King Salmonid would appear.

Changes to Story Mode

  • Fixed an issue where, after clearing the final stage, a communication error would occur in the middle of a certain scene and return the player to the square.
    • The post-clear cutscenes can be viewed by clearing the final stage again.
    • In cases where this error occurred, the final stage is treated as cleared, and the stage can be skipped from the pause menu when reattempting.

Other Changes

  • Fixed an issue when starting the game for the first time in which the game could get stuck and not advance from the black screen after the screen where yellow and blue ink mix together.
  • Fixed an issue when downloading a battle replay that occasionally caused the game to not advance.
  • Fixed an issue in which the game would crash when the schedule was updated while attempting to join a friend.
  • Fixed a rare issue where the game would crash while the player was visiting a shop.
  • Fixed an issue where a communication error could occur while a player traded in gear at a shop.
  • Fixed an issue where a connection error could occur when buying a weapon. A player would seem to then have the weapon equipped despite not having been able to buy it, which would cause a connection error if the player attempted to join a battle.

Unlisted Changes

Fixed the issue of the Octoling Boy amiibo's Octobrush having the wrong ink color on it (yellow instead of neon pink).

1.1.2 (30 September 2022)

The second post-launch software update that introduced additional fixes to multiplayer, player controls, and connectivity.

Changes to Connectivity

  • Implemented additional measures to reduce the frequency of communication errors following battles and job shifts.

Changes to Player Controls

  • Fixed an issue where players using dualies would stop attacking and enter swim form at the end of a Dodge Roll regardless of whether they were holding the ZR Button.
  • Fixed an issue with the Drop Roller gear ability where the player would enter swim form at the end of their Drop Roll if they pressed the ZR Button while holding the ZL Button during the Drop Roll, regardless of whether they continued holding the ZR Button.
  • Fixed an issue with splatanas that caused players to perform two sequential horizontal slashes following a charged slash even if they only pressed the ZR Button once.

Changes to Multiplayer

  • Fixed an issue where players would not take damage for a certain amount of time after their Booyah Bomb armor was broken.
  • Implemented measures to prevent issues where players would clip through and get stuck in terrain when turning from swim form into humanoid form near a Tacticooler placed in the corner of certain maps.

Other Changes

  • Fixed an issue where the game would crash when the player finished editing their locker with a photo stand placed in the locker.
  • Fixed an issue with receiving a new catalog after reaching catalog level 100, where a communication error happening or the game crashing could result in the catalog-receiving event not triggering.

(In cases where this issue has already occurred, the catalog-receiving event will play again once the player has restarted the software and entered Hotlantis.)

  • Fixed an issue relating to Super Sea Snails. If you were unable to receive Super Sea Snails from the first Splatfest (Gear vs. Grub vs. Fun), the final-results news broadcast will replay and you will now be able to collect your Super Sea Snails.

Unlisted changes

This update introduced a bug in which the game may crash and return players to the HOME Menu when receiving a communication error during Salmon Run matchmaking, or when attempting to reconnect to the Internet via Grizzco Industries after a loss of connection to the server during a shift. This was not fixed until version 2.0.0.

1.2.0 (26 October 2022)

This patch introduced balance adjustments, bug fixes, and general improvements. It also added support for the first wave of Splatoon 3 amiibo.

Changes and Feature Improvements

Changes to amiibo

  • Added support for the Inkling (Yellow), Octoling (Blue), and Smallfry amiibo.

Changes to Communication

  • Made improvements to data transfer between players.
    • On average, data will be transferred about .05 seconds more quickly than before.
    • Users can expect to see a reduction in the time it takes from a player being dealt damage to them being defeated, the time it takes from touching a Golden Egg to actually picking it up, and other similar actions.
    • These improvements cannot fully compensate for a slow or unreliable internet connection.
  • Despite these changes, the tick rate remains unchanged.

Changes to Multiplayer

  • Specifications for some of the sub weapons have been changed.

Changes to Splatfest

  • Made it so that when players from each team appear during Open and Pro Splatfest Battles, each team’s affiliation is also displayed, making it easy to know which Splatfest team they’re on.
  • Made it possible to report “Fresh!” hand-drawn pictures that appear in the sky above Splatsville during a Splatfest.

Other Changes

  • Information like the name of the current mode and progress through a challenge will now be displayed when opening the lobby menu during matchmaking in the lobby or Grizzco.
  • When playing alone, immediately after choosing “Keep Going” or “Change Gear, Then Go!” the player can now use the – Button in the lobby or Grizzco to cancel matchmaking, depending on the game mode selected.
  • In the lobby or Grizzco, when the player can select “OK!” or “Yeah” when joining a friend, a sound effect will now play and the controller will vibrate to notify the player.
  • Improved the efficiency of matchmaking for Anarchy Battles (Open), Anarchy Battles (Series), Splatfest Battles (Open), and Tricolor Attack.
    • These changes mean that a pair of players joining an Anarchy Battle (Open) or Splatfest Battle (Open) can expect shorter wait times.
  • When reading amiibo with a Freshest Fit saved on the equip screen, there will now be an exclamation point where “Freshest Fit” is displayed on the bottom right of the screen.

Bug Fixes

Fixes to Player Controls

  • Fixed an issue where, when another player’s movements were unable to be reproduced smoothly due to the terrain, a process to instantaneously move them would not run, causing them to stay in their displaced position for a long time.
  • Fixed an issue where Super Jumping to a distant location and attacking just before landing would cause shots to travel farther than intended.
  • Fixed an issue where the gear ability Ink Saver (Main) was not being activated when using brushes and holding ZR to ink while moving.
  • Fixed an issue that was making it easier to interrupt the player’s attack and turn back into swim form when repeatedly pressing ZR to attack while holding ZL when using brushes or sloshers.
  • Changed the player’s pose when they attack right after a Squid Surge or a Squid Roll away from a wall while having a charger or stringer equipped so that the direction they are facing and the direction the shot actually travels are not as different.
  • Fixed an issue where, when aiming a charger with a scope attached while pressed up against an obstacle, obstacles would become transparent in some cases when they shouldn’t be.
  • Fixed an issue with sloshers where the weapon-use sound effect would not be played correctly when attacking immediately after “Low ink!” is shown.
  • Fixed an issue with the Bloblobber where some of the blobs would not be lobbed when used while submerged and aiming upward.
  • Fixed an issue with the Ballpoint Splatling when firing at long range where the variation of the speed of the ink fired was greater than intended.
  • Fixed an issue when firing the Glooga Dualies and Dodge Rolling repeatedly where low-damage shots would be fired at the moment of the second slide.
  • Fixed an issue with the Tenta Brella where its launched umbrella’s hit detection was farther forward than intended, bringing it closer to the position it had in Splatoon 2.
  • Fixed an issue with splatanas where the width inked would be larger than intended depending on the number of swings.
  • Fixed an issue where certain control inputs with the Splatana Stamper would cause horizontal slashes to be repeated faster than intended.
  • Fixed an issue with moving long distances with the Zipcaster where certain inputs could allow the player to use their main weapon even while moving.

Fixes to Multiplayer

  • Fixed an issue where inking certain terrain with a bomb or the Rainmaker explosion would award more points than intended.
  • Fixed an issue where inking the walls of some objects in a stage would charge the special gauge.
  • Fixed an issue where some objects in a stage would not be applied toward inked area in Turf War battles.
  • Fixed an issue where blaster shots would produce the same shock wave as a midair explosion when hitting a Tacticooler or Ultra Stamp.
  • Fixed an issue where rollers would ink surfaces they weren’t touching when rolling in a way that clips into certain terrain.
  • Fixed an issue where the Sloshing Machine’s spiral would deal damage when hitting an opponent on the other side of thin terrain even though they were hidden by the terrain.
  • Fixed an issue where the Sloshing Machine’s spiral would deal damage when hitting an opponent inside an Ink Vac’s vacuum area despite the opponent being entirely inside the area.
  • Fixed an issue where a bomb would remain in its location when hitting a brella at the moment it closes, regardless of damage dealt to the umbrella.
  • Fixed an issue where using a splatana when in close contact with the Tower Control tower would cause the ink to disappear when it hit the tower.
  • Fixed an issue where Burst Bombs would disappear without activating when hitting certain terrain.
  • Fixed an issue where a Point Sensor or Toxic Mist would disappear without activating when hitting certain terrain or an Ultra Stamp.
  • Fixed an issue where a Splash Wall would immediately disappear if placed in a certain location.
  • Fixed an issue on some stages where a Booyah Bomb’s blast would not ink the ground correctly.
  • Fixed an issue where the Ultra Stamp would not block enemy bombs’ blast waves.
  • Fixed an issue where the Ultra Stamp would not block fully charged shots from a charger.
  • Fixed an issue with the Ultra Stamp’s repeated stamping attack where there would be moments in which direct attacks could not deal damage to the opponent.
  • Fixed an issue that would prevent the Ultra Stamp’s repeated stamping attack from properly inking the ground.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed the Ultra Stamp’s repeated stamping attack to deal damage to enemies on the other side of thin walls.
  • Fixed an issue where the Ultra Stamp’s midair spinning attack could not deal damage to opponents on the ground.

  • Fixed an issue where placing a Wave Breaker overlapping an opponent’s Splash Wall would cause the Wave Breaker to disappear on the opponent’s screen.
  • Fixed an issue where a Tacticooler activating at the same moment a previously placed Tacticooler disappears would cause both to disappear.
  • Fixed an issue where the appearance of a placed Tacticooler that inclines at an angle due to moving terrain would differ from its collision detection.
  • Fixed an issue where, when a player is splatted directly before a Tacticooler’s effect runs out, the special-gauge reduction would remain normal even though the player still has a shortened respawn time.
  • Implemented measures to prevent players clipping into terrain when a Tacticooler is placed in certain corners.
  • Fixed an issue where the gear ability Comeback was also activating for respawns from the player falling off the stage or into water.
  • Fixed an issue in Splat Zones mode where the borderlines of the zones were difficult to see on certain stages.
  • Adjusted Rainmaker so that if the player is splatted right at the moment they place the Rainmaker at the goal, the count will be at 1.

  • Fixed an issue in Rainmaker where the tops of signboards that show areas the Rainmaker is restricted from entering would block ink shots.
  • Fixed an issue in Rainmaker where a player would get the Rainmaker at the instant its barrier is broken if the Rainmaker was returned to the center just as someone was trying to touch it.
  • Fixed an issue in Clam Blitz where a Tacticooler placed on top of the clam basket would disappear.
  • Fixed an issue in Clam Blitz where overtime would be entered when the time limit is reached even if the team with the lower score has no existing power clams.
  • Fixed an issue in the Scorch Gorge stage in Turf War, Splat Zone and Clam Blitz battles where squeezing into the gap between certain terrain would cause the player to enter into the terrain.
  • Removed the box on top of the grating in the Undertow Spillway stage in Splat Zones because of an issue where attacks would pass between the box and the terrain despite looking like it blocked attacks from below.
  • Fixed an issue in Mincemeat Metalworks where part of a player’s model would clip into certain terrain.
  • Fixed an issue in Mincemeat Metalworks where players could unintentionally climb on top of certain terrain at the edge of the stage.
  • Fixed an issue in Hagglefish Market where the position of the box placed on the metal grate near the starting point was displaced from the grate.
  • In the Hagglefish Market stage in Tower Control mode, slightly adjusted the route of the tower and fixed an issue where the player would become unable to move on top of the small gap between the tower and terrain.
  • Fixed an issue in Inkblot Art Academy where a Wave Breaker placed along a certain wall would break immediately after being placed.
  • In the Inkblot Art Academy stage in Tower Control mode, slightly adjusted the route of the tower and fixed an issue where the player would become unable to move on top of the small gap between the tower and terrain.
  • Fixed an issue in the Mahi-Mahi Resort stage in Tower Control mode where an area impassable to players would appear midair when the water level dropped.

Fixes to Salmon Run

  • Fixed an issue where player hit boxes in life-ring form were smaller than intended.
  • Fixed an issue where multiple arrows would appear within the screen if the same player signaled “Help!” or “This way!” repeatedly and made it so that there will only be one arrow from a single player.
  • Fixed an issue where a launched umbrella would have a large rebound when making contact near a Salmonid’s head.
  • Fixed an issue where game movements would slow down if a player used a jet pack to reach the top of the egg basket.
  • Fixed an issue where bombs thrown into a Flyfish’s weak point would then come out.
  • Fixed an issue where a player attacked by Maws near the water or certain terrain would be blown far into the air.
  • Fixed an issue where a player that touched the side surface of Maws during its attack would be splatted.
  • Fixed an issue where the player’s respawn point would be in midair and leave them unable to return to the stage. This could happen when jumping into the water from the top of a Fish Stick just before it disappears.
  • Fixed an issue where players could avoid taking damage by jumping when a Flipper-Flopper attacked, regardless of whether they were in the attack area or not.
  • Fixed an issue where a Slammin’ Lid may have become unable to move if it touched a Fish Stick.
  • Fixed an issue where a player riding on a Slammin’ Lid would rarely be launched far away.
  • Fixed an issue where a player would be pushed into stage terrain when attacked by a Cohozuna.
  • Fixed an issue where players could avoid taking damage by jumping when a Cohozuna did its jump attack, regardless of whether they were in the attack area or not.

Made it so that Cohozunas will not attempt to do jump attacks against players on top of a Fish Stick.

  • Fixed an issue in the Cohock Charge event where players were unable to mount the cannons.
  • Fixed an issue in the Goldie Seeking event where a launched umbrella wouldn’t activate a gusher it touched.
  • Fixed an issue in the Griller event where the Griller’s red laser sight wouldn’t be shown if a player was resurrected by a bomb at the last second before a crew wipe.
  • Fixed an issue in the Mudmouth Eruptions event where players would clip into a Mudmouth right after it spawned and be splatted.
  • Fixed an issue in the Giant Tornado event when playing in a bad communications environment where a box containing Golden Eggs wouldn’t appear or be positioned as intended.
  • Fixed an issue where players would not be able to get their special badge upon arriving at an Xtrawave at MAX hazard level.
  • Fixed an issue where players would not be able to receive Grizzco Points correctly when the shift schedule was updated while playing a job.
  • Fixed an issue with reporting a player from the Grizzco terminal where their number of delivery assists was not shown correctly.
  • Fixed a problem where simultaneously pressing certain buttons at the reward-pickup window would cause the game to crash.

Fixes to Story Mode

  • Fixed a rare issue where ink wheels would not reappear.
  • Implemented measures to prevent the game from crashing on stages where Octoling enemies appear.
  • Fixed an issue where using a Splashdown on the edge of a cliff would cause player controls to stop working.
  • Fixed an issue where collecting a canned special attack while using the Zipcaster could cause player controls to stop working.
  • Fixed an issue on stages with time limits where, after the player lost their armor due to an enemy attack and time ran out at the same time as the player’s armor was restored, the player would lose control of their character but the stage wouldn’t be counted as a loss.
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent the game from progressing when entering a pipeline immediately after throwing Smallfry at a Fuzzball.
  • Fixed an issue where touching an upward dash track repeatedly could move the player outside the stage, counting as a loss.
  • Fixed an issue where the player being splatted or restarting the stage while Smallfry was thrown onto a Flooder would cause the Flooder to no longer ink the ground.
  • Fixed an issue where the player being splatted or restarting the stage just before a balloon fish exploded would cause the bomb fish’s area to shift and, depending on the stage, make clearing the stage difficult.
  • Fixed an issue where quickly moving a lift on a stage where Octodiscos appear could cause the game to crash.
  • Fixed an issue in Alterna Site 1 Stage 6 where enemies originally meant to appear were not appearing.
  • Fixed an issue in Alterna Site 4 Stage 6 where breaking a certain target just before falling out of the stage would prevent the next target from spawning and make the stage impossible to clear.

Fixes to Splatfests

  • Fixed an issue where players not pledged to any team could still earn conch shells.
  • Adjusted the color of ink when Color Lock is on during Tricolor Battles.
  • Fixed an issue when a team had a synergy bonus related to hairstyles where the name displayed would differ from the actual hairstyle.

Other Changes

  • Fixed an issue where ability changes due to secondary gear abilities would not be immediately reflected when changing gear in the lobby.
  • Fixed an issue where, after finishing a battle and choosing “Change Gear, Then Go!” reading amiibo just before the countdown timer ran out would prevent the game from proceeding.
  • Fixed a number of issues relating to the player’s species changing when reading amiibo on the Equip screen.
  • When buying gear from Murch, the purchased gear will now be marked as New and will appear at the top of the list in the Equip screen.
  • Fixed an issue when buying gear from Murch where the price would become 0.
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent the game from proceeding while talking to Murch. This could happen when repeatedly pressing the B Button while the ability-chunks screen was displayed.

  • Titles for certain Freshness flags were changed in English, Dutch, French (Canada), and Spanish (Latin America).
  • Chinese (Simplified):
    • Two signal messages were re-translated.
    • The "Influencer" title, which had been erroneously translated as "influenza" prior, was corrected.
    • Names for the Party Hard Hat and the Airflow & Hustle Jacket were changed.
    • Names for the Squid 3 logo and Octopus 3 logo stickers, which had been switched with each other prior, received their proper names.
  • Spanish (Latin America):
    • The wording for the message that appears when a player disconnects within the first minute of a match was adjusted.
  • Spanish (Spain):
    • The message for getting a WIPEOUT!, which was previously translated as "Rivals wiped out!" regardless of who got wiped out from the player's point of view, was changed to make more sense in both contexts.
  • Dutch:
    • Certain quotes of Mr. Grizz in Salmon Run Next Wave were changed.
  • Three new Emotes were added: You're Welcome, Robo Steppin', and Your Move. They were not released until Chill Season 2022, although the Your Move emote was teased by Nintendo in the Pokémon Splatfest trailer.

Sturgeon Shipyard's Tricolor Turf War layout was revised in preparation for the Pokémon Splatfest (Grass vs. Fire vs. Water) in November 2022. This change was done because of the fact that its design seen in the Splatoon 3: Splatfest World Premiere demo was unbalanced for the defending team, especially for the fact that Team Scissors was leading at halftime in all regions and became dead last in Open clout for the final results.

Minor bug fixes, especially for one major bug in the previous update: in Rainmaker, the team's score counter would jump to 1 after breaking the opposing team's checkpoint, forcing Nintendo to ban the mode temporarily from Anarchy rotations before then.

  • Fixed an issue in Rainmaker that caused the player who placed the Rainmaker on a checkpoint to appear motionless to other players.
  • Fixed an issue in Rainmaker where the goal distance count would go to 1 even when the Rainmaker had not reached the goal.

Added Features, Feature Improvements, and Adjustments

Season and Catalog Changes

Chill Season 2022 began on 1st December 2022 at 00:00 UTC, and thereby added the following:

  • A new catalog, and with it the new gear, titles, Splashtags, decorations, stickers, and emotes included therein.
    • 75 pieces of gear (16 new, 59 returning).
    • 9 new titles and 3 new Splashtag banners.
    • 48 new locker customization items (10 decorations and 38 stickers).
    • 6 new emotes were added.
  • Two new battle stages: Brinewater Springs and Flounder Heights.
  • A new Salmon Run stage: Marooner's Bay.
  • Three new main-weapon types: Splattershot Nova, Big Swig Roller, and Snipewriter 5H.
  • Ten new sets of existing main weapons paired with different sub and special weapons.
  • Thirteen new Tableturf Battle cards.
  • Ability to look at the content of the season's catalog. Players can check this by opening the main menu with X, going to the Status tab, and selecting Catalog.

  • Specifications for some main weapons have changed.

Changes to X Battles

  • X Battle, a new battle mode, has been added.
    • X Battle is a battle mode where players of ranks S+0 and up can compete in battle for X Power.
    • X Power is calculated separately for each battle mode like Splat Zones or Tower Control.
    • Players battle until reaching three wins or three losses, whereupon X Power is gained or lost based on the results.
    • The world is divided into two divisions in which X Battles are held to compete for the highest X Power: Takoroka Division, comprising Japan, Hong Kong, S. Korea, Australia, and New Zealand; and Tentatek Division, comprising the Americas and Europe.
    • The division a player is affiliated with is determined the first time they play in an X Battle each season. Once this is determined, the division cannot be changed during that season.
    • X Battles will become available to play on November 30th at the same time as Chill Season 2022 begins.

Changes to Ranked

  • Added a feature allowing players to purposely reset their rank.
    • This feature can only be used once per season by players of rank B or higher.
    • What rank a player is reset to is determined automatically by their estimated ability based on their battles up to that point.
    • Players can use this feature by opening up the Lobby menu, moving their cursors to Anarchy Battle, and pressing ZL.
  • Some values of the initial cost in Rank Points spent to enter an Anarchy Battle (Series) have increased.

Changes to Salmon Run

  • Data relating to the Big Run event has been added.
    • Big Runs are limited-time events in which the Salmonids invade the stages used by Inklings and Octolings for Turf War and Anarchy Battles, allowing players to partake in Salmon Run on those stages. Whenever a Big Run is happening, the affected stage will be unavailable in other rotations until the Big Run ends, though it's still playable in Private Battles.
    • At the end of each Big Run event, exclusive locker decorations are awarded based on the highest team-wide Golden Egg total the player achieved in any one shift. This score is ranked relative to the high scores of all participating players, with different decorations awarded to players whose high score is in the top 5%, top 20%, or top 50% of scores. Players not in the top 50% still receive a basic version of the decoration.
    • The same bonuses are granted, with additional bonuses and superbonuses added to the bar. Additionally, a 1.2x multiplier is applied to Catalog Points earned from shifts during the event.
  • Added a feature to save and replay job scenarios.
    • A job scenario is the collected overall data comprising elements of a single job shift like stage, weapon array, appearing Salmonids, and special events.
    • Players can save job scenarios from the Recent Jobs screen at the Grizzco terminal.
    • Players can reproduce a scenario and attempt it as many times as they like by creating a Private Job room, then pressing the ZL Button to select a scenario.
    • Job scenarios can be shared with other players via the code issued when the scenario is saved.
      Note: By entering a code at the Grizzco terminal, you can also download and save other players’ scenarios.
    • When a new update is released, job scenarios from previous versions may become unable to be used.
  • The conditions for using the Reset Rank feature have been changed to being above Go-Getter 40.
  • When a player with a rank higher than Eggsecutive VP 100 uses the Reset Rank feature, they are not reset all at once to rank value 40. They will be reset in stages of 100 points at a time.
    • When the stage changes, rank will be reset to Eggsecutive VP 40 as it has been before now.
  • Some Boss Salmonid abilities have been changed.

  • Movement speed is now about 30% slower than before.
    • In addition to lowering the Big Shot's attack frequency, this also lengthens the amount of time it spends walking on land, increasing the players' window of opportunity to attack.
  • The animation played as the Big Shot's shot comes flying in will be shown for longer than before, making it easier to determine where the shot was fired from.
  • The performance of some special weapons has been changed.

  • The number of Boss Salmonids that can appear at once has been capped at 15.
    • When defeating Boss Salmonids at a regular pace, even at high hazard levels, players will not reach this limit. This change was made because, in cases where players are chased down by bosses they cannot splat, the appearance of too many bosses can slow the game down and make it more difficult than necessary to get things back under control.

Changes to Splatfest

  • Tricolor Battles have been modified so that all players can play on the attacking or defending team regardless of the halftime results.
    • Players can join by themselves or in a pair with a friend. When playing by themselves, they will be paired with another solo player, same as before.
    • A group of eight will be created from four pairs, and a 2 vs. 4 vs. 2 Tricolor Battle will commence.
    • Players do not know whether they will be on an attacking team or the defending team until the battle begins.
    • Players have a fifty-fifty chance of being on an attacking team or the defending team, regardless of their Splatfest-team affiliation.
    • Depending on population ratios for Splatfest teams, there may be Tricolor Battles where all eight players are on the same Splatfest team. In these cases, Clout will not be calculated.
  • Clout earned in Tricolor Battles will now be calculated in the Final Results, and the points awarded for each category have been adjusted as seen in the table below.

    • Increased the victory bonus for the defending team (3000 → 9000).
    • When the team in first place at halftime is the defending team and the attacking teams are from the second- or third-place teams, 1.5 times more Clout will be awarded for a victory.
  • When you win a 10x, 100x, or 333x Battle, it will be shown at your Pledge Box.
  • After winning a 100x or 333x Battle, you can board your team's float from your Pledge Box to take commemorative pictures.
    • However, this was quite bugged as it would cause Octolings to incorrectly appear as Inklings with the Octoling hair and eyebrows, which was not fixed until version 3.0.0.

Changes to Lockers

  • T-shirt gear items can now be folded for storage by pressing the L Stick while placing the shirt.
  • When pressing B to cancel placement, the locker will now return to the immediately previous state before you grabbed anything.

Other Changes

  • Players can now enter Photo Mode from Recon Mode.
    • Players can use Photo Mode not only by themselves but also when entering Recon Mode with multiple people by way of Private Battles.
  • When walking a stage in recon by oneself, a player can call an amiibo to take pictures with.
  • Added a feature to temporarily use a different player name than usual when playing Private Battles over the internet.
    • The idea is, for one example, to be able to add a team name into one’s player name, only in Private Battles.
    • When creating or joining a group for a Private Battle, you can temporarily set a different name by pressing the L Button.
  • The song title and artist of the background music will now be shown at the beginning of battle on the bottom right corner of the screen. This also revealed the names of three battle songs that were not previously revealed by Nintendo, which included the following:
    • Headhammer - C-Side
    • Triple-Dip - C-Side
    • Sandy Side Up - Front Roe
  • In the Equip screen, when a player has a lot of weapons or gear, it will now be clear what page of items is being shown.
  • In the Equip screen, when sorting by gear ability, abilities that do not exist on the items being sorted will no longer appear as sorting options.
  • Added a feature for listening again to Sheldon’s weapon explanations in Ammo Knights.
    • Players can use this feature by putting their cursor over the weapon they want to hear the explanation for again and pressing the ZR Button.
  • Added a badge related to using the Shell-Out Machine.

  • Fixed an issue where standing on the edge of a sponge of the opponents’ color and jumping would let players do a jump of the same height as the regular ground.
  • Fixed an issue where a player being moved involuntarily by things like a Splash Wall or a Salmonid’s attack would cause them to not be shown in the proper position on another player’s screen.
  • Fixed an issue where players going into swim form on thin floors could allow some attacks to damage them from the opposite side of the terrain.
  • Fixed an issue where swimming on a wall and quickly doing a Squid Surge would allow the player to jump higher than intended when wearing gear with a lot of Intensify Action abilities.

  • Two new Tricolor Turf War stages were added to be used for both of Chill Season 2022's Splatfests: Undertow Spillway and Mincemeat Metalworks.
  • New Salmon Run rare weapon: Grizzco Splatana.
    • It's an illegally modified Splatana Stamper that has the least range of any weapon, but does extreme damage with each swing. The uncharged attack deals 200 damage and can be used to repeatedly hit a wide swath in front of the user. The charged swing takes around 2.5 seconds to fully power up, but is devastatingly strong, dealing 1200 damage while piercing armor, making it capable of destroying any Boss Salmonid in one hit whether or not they are in a normally vulnerable state.
  • The defending team will no longer earn a Synergy Bonus in Tricolor Turf War battles if they win, likely due to the new change.
  • When matchmaking is cancelled due to player(s) disconnecting, the game will display a message saying, "One or more players disconnected."
  • Fixed the Salmon Run communication error crash bug that was introduced in version 1.1.2.
  • The animation of unlocking a sub ability on a piece of gear was updated.
    • When gear gets enough EXP to level up, the whole part of the UI containing the gear will now pulsate and a sound will play.
    • After the animation of the sub ability cycling through random icons finishes, the sub ability will now pulsate with an arrow pattern breifly appearing in the ability's circle icon.

Bug fixes, and added support for the Splatoon 3: Expansion Pass DLC; players who ordered it will receive an in-game battle boosting bonus of 123,000 cash, three double XP tickets, one of each drink ticket, and a banner of the Squid Sisters. These bonuses were added to the game when pre-orders were made available in this, though the banner was not added until Wave 1 released in Version 3.0.0.

    • Due to this change, you will now be able to pass through the Tacticooler—even in Inkling or Octoling form—while performing an action that causes you to move quickly, such as a Dodge Roll while using a dualie weapon.
  • Fixed an issue in Brinewater Springs where players could get onto rocks outside the stage.

Other Fixes

  • Fixed an issue that occurred while replaying Tricolor Turf War battles where the cheers from Deep Cut would sometimes be for teams other than the ones in the battle.
  • Fixed an issue that occurred while replaying job scenarios in the Shoal. If the replay contained weapons labeled with a question mark, it could cause the screen to go black and prevent the game from starting.

Unlisted Changes

For some unknown reason, the Tricolor Turf War layout of Mincemeat Metalworks had a bug in version 2.1.0 where the line-of-sight blocking car poles would be invisible, despite the collision still being there. This update fixed this bug in preparation for the upcoming Splatfest (Dark Chocolate vs. Milk Chocolate vs. White Chocolate), even though said Tricolor stage was not yet playable in-game before then.

Added Features, Feature Improvements, and Adjustments

Changes to DLC

  • Added support for Inkopolis DLC. When this update data is downloaded, Deep Cut will announce that the train station has reopened.
    • Players who have purchased the Splatoon 3: Expansion Pass can now travel between Inkopolis and Splatsville using the train station in the square.
    • Inkopolis has the same shops and features as Splatsville, with the same lineup of products. If you buy something in one location, it will be sold out for the day in both locations.

Season and Catalog Changes

Fresh Season 2023 began on 1st March 2023 at 00:00 UTC, and thereby added the following:

  • A new catalog, including new gear, titles, Splashtags, decorations, stickers, and emotes.
  • A new gear brand, Z+F.
  • About 126 new items added to store product lineups.
  • Two new battle stages: Um'ami Ruins and Manta Maria.
  • Two new special weapons, one new and one returning from the original Splatoon game:
    • Kraken Royale — transform into a huge squid or octopus and attack by pressing the B Button to jump or by holding and releasing the ZR Button to do a charge attack. The user is vulnerable for a moment before and after transforming but will not take damage from attacks while transformed.
    • Super Chump — aim and launch destructible decoys that Super Jump to a specified area and explode a short time after landing.
  • 12 new sets of existing main weapons paired with different sub and special weapons.
  • 23 new Tableturf Battle cards.
  • Salmon Run gear items that can be obtained by trading fish scales at Grizzco.
  • Ability to earn more Catalog Points than usual during the week before the end of the season thanks to a special Closeout Bonus.

Changes to the Notifications Feature

  • Added the Pool feature.
    • The Pool feature allows players to send and receive notifications with other players in the same Pool.
    • Players can enter a phrase to join a Pool by opening the Lobby menu, selecting the Notifications tab, and pressing the + Button.
    • For example, if you enter “Turf War Fans,” you’ll be able to send and receive notifications with players who have also entered “Turf War Fans,” and you will be able to join or drop in on each other’s games using notifications.
    • While there isn’t a limit on how many people can join the same Pool, there may be cases in which notifications won’t be sent to all members if a large number of players are connected to the same Pool simultaneously.
  • When you receive an invitation to play or a “Fresh!” notification, it will be displayed on the screen.

Changes to Salmon Run

  • A new King Salmonid called Horrorboros may appear.
    • Whether a Cohozuna or a Horrorboros appears will depend on the schedule at the time.
  • Data relating to the upcoming Big Run event has been added, with Inkblot Art Academy as the Big Run stage.
  • Data relating to the limited-time Eggstra Work event has been added.
    • In Eggstra Work, players can assemble a group of two to four friends or members from the same Pool and then compete against other teams—all using the same job scenario—to collect as many Golden Eggs as possible during five waves.
    • Both the initial hazard level and the job scenario for Eggstra Work are fixed, which means that every team will face off against the same Salmonids under the same conditions every time. However, if your team manages to exceed the Golden Eggs quota by enough, your hazard level will go up, making it possible to get a higher score.
  • You will now be able to preview items when exchanging fish scales, similar to how you can preview items at Hotlantis, etc.

Changes to Connectivity

  • Made it so that players will be notified when their connection is unstable. If the connection continues to be unstable, player controls will temporarily be disabled.

Changes to Splatfests

  • Changed the amount of XP required to level up a Splatfest Tee; the XP requirement to level up said gear has been fixed at 7,500 XP, just like in the previous game.
  • Winners of 10x Battles, etc., will be announced during the Anarchy Splatcast.
    • This announcement will display automatically when in the lobby. It is not related to the timing of stage changes that happen every two hours.
  • Slightly adjusted ink colors during Tricolor Turf War battles when Color Lock is turned ON.
  • When you win a 10x Battle, a notification will be sent to your friends and members from the same Pool.

Changes to Lockers

  • Added a feature to store all items placed in your locker at once.
    • Press the – (Minus) Button while editing your locker to use this feature.

Changes to Tableturf Battle

  • It is now possible to play Tableturf Battle against friends and players in the same Pool.
    • You can create a room for Tableturf Battle in the lobby.
    • Up to 10 players can join a room for Tableturf Battle.
    • If two players in the same room take a seat at the Tableturf Battle tables on the second floor of the lobby, a game between the two will commence.
    • You can watch a game between two players by approaching them and pressing the A Button.
    • You can also play with nearby friends via the same process at the Shoal. Up to eight players can join a room for Tableturf Battle at the Shoal.
  • Increased the responsiveness to quick inputs made on the Edit Deck screen.

  • Added a jukebox to the lobby.
    • You can use 100 cash to temporarily change the music playing in the lobby to a song of your choosing.
    • You’ll gain more songs to choose from as you progress in the game.
    • When using the jukebox in a Private Battle room, the music you choose will also play in the lobbies of other players in that room.

  • Italian:

  • Russian:
    • Names for the Fashion Splash Shirt and the Zekko Baseball LS were changed.
  • Two new Tricolor Turf War stages were added: MakoMart and Eeltail Alley. The latter was not used in Fresh Season 2023 as it was unfinished before then, and would not be updated until version 4.0.0.

  • When getting stickers from the Shell-Out Machine, there is now a white background displayed.

Unreleased Salmon Run content; the stage became Jammin' Salmon Junction, with the weapons being S-Blast '92 and Painbrush respectively.
  • Starting from this update onwards, any unreleased stages will be hidden from the stage schedule in SplatNet 3 with dummy icons until said season begins. This includes any supplied Salmon Run weapons whose main weapon has not yet been released for multiplayer, although those will be hidden from the schedule in-game until said update containing the new content is released.

Due to the addition of the Neo Sploosh-o-matic and Neo Splash-o-matic in this update, the original Sploosh-o-matic and Splash-o-matic had their designs graphically updated, with the formerly silver parts of the design now being black. The 2D icons of the Rapid Blaster and Rapid Blaster Pro were fixed to better match their in-game counterparts. Interestingly, the existing Tableturf card for the Sploosh-o-matic matches the new coloring, while the cards for the Rapid Blaster and Rapid Blaster Pro don't, suggesting the golden components of the former two comprise the weapons' early designs.

  • Fixed an issue that made it look like special-ability activations didn’t get replenished for an Xtrawave if the player had used up their special abilities already and were wearing the “Gloopsuit” series of work suits.

    • Color Lock combination number 2 is a greater adjustment that provides support for cases where it was still difficult to play with Color Lock enabled previously.
      • The color combination will be different from when Color Lock was enabled previously, both when battling with two teams and during Tricolor Turf War battles.
  • Adjusted the animation when a Reppin' Inkopolis emote was performed with a splatling equipped.

Changes to Challenges

  • Data relating to a new multiplayer mode called Challenges has been added.
    • Challenges are limited-time battles with special rules. They can also serve as online-tournament qualifiers.
    • Players can participate solo or form a group with friends and join together.
    • Challenges can be broken up into as many as 3 time slots so that players from various regions can join. Each time slot will be two hours long.
    • As players battle, their Challenge Power will be calculated, which changes based on the player’s wins and losses during the time slot.
    • Challenge Power will be calculated individually for players who participate solo and as a group for players joining as a group.
    • If a group’s members change, the group will be considered new and Challenge Power will be recalculated.
    • Once a certain amount of time has passed since the end of the Challenge, players will be able to check the lobby terminal to see how high their Challenge Power power was overall.
    • Challenge Power distribution is measured in three divisions: solo, duos, and teams.
      • 3-player groups are considered part of the teams division.
  • Made it possible to use the Shell-Out Machine with Shell-Out Tokens.
    • Players who win 5 battles within a Challenge will receive a Shell-Out Token.
    • Players can only earn 1 Shell-Out Token per Challenge.

Changes to Anarchy Battles

  • Made it so that Anarchy Power will be calculated for your team as a whole when participating in Anarchy Battle (Open) with friends.
    • Anarchy Power changes based on wins and losses and is reset when modes or stages switch.
    • If a group’s members change, the group will considered new and Anarchy Power will be recalculated.
    • Once a certain amount of time has passed since the mode or stage switched, players will be able to check the lobby terminal to see how high their Anarchy Power was overall.

  • Greatly changed the matchmaking mechanism in Anarchy Battle (Open) to improve matchmaking efficiency for groups of 2 players.

    • We will consider adding a fix in a future update that prevents a communication error from occurring even if players stay in the same room for an even longer period of time.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the spectators and players to see different things for an extended period of time when the connection was unstable in online battles.

Fixes to Splatfests

  • Fixed an issue in the “Splatfest Top 100” part of “Splatfest Stats” in SplatNet 3 where, if 2 or more players were tied to the nearest decimal point, the player who recorded their score first would be displayed beneath any players who recorded their scores later.
    • This fix will also be applied to the ranking order of Splatfests that were held in the past.
  • Fixed a rare issue that caused the conversation about Splatfest results to not display when tuning into the Anarchy Splatcast at the exact time that the Splatfest result announcement began.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the game to crash if the player selected “Watch Splatcast” while a Splatfest news flash was playing somewhere other than the lobby.

    • That song will play in the Splatsville and Inkopolis common areas as well as the lobby from the end of the Splatfest until the Splatfest results are announced.
  • Added badges players can get based on the number of 10x Battles they participate in or win during Splatfests; they all share the same unlock requirements, regardless of the team of their choosing.

Changes to Tableturf Battle

  • Made it possible to sort cards by “Rarity.”
  • Changed the default sorting for Edit Deck and Test Placement to “Sort by Spaces.”

Changes to the Lobby

  • Made it so that players will receive a notification when a friend uploads a battle replay.
    • By opening the notification, players can download the battle replay without entering a code.
    • These notifications will only be sent to friends.
  • Made it so that friends and players in the same Pool will be notified when one gets a rare prize from the Shell-Out Machine.
  • Made it possible to use the Shell-Out Machine while in a Private Battle room, as long as the teams have not yet been decided.
  • Made it so that when one player begins matchmaking and members have gathered but there is a communication error, matchmaking is automatically reattempted once instead of being suspended as a result of the error.

  • Fixed an issue where pressing the L Button to open the menu at certain times while using a weapon in the lobby, Grizzco, or the Shoal sometimes caused the player’s controls and weapon-related animations to cease working properly.

  • Fixed an issue where the sound effect that indicates that the special gauge is full wouldn’t play when the player closed the Turf Map at the same time as the special gauge filled.

Changes to Anarchy Battles

    • A player’s five-win streak will increase each time they finish a series with five consecutive wins.
    • The number will reset to 0 when players reset their rank, finish a series with three losses, attempt a Rank-Up Battle, or when the season changes.

  • Fixed an issue where, if a battle occurred between members of the same team during a special Splatfest, the special ink color would glow more than intended.
    • In other words, special ink colors will be disabled during mirror matches.

Unlisted Changes

  • In accordance with the change to Big Run scoring, the badges associated with Big Run were given new unlock requirements (the purple 'top 50%' badge is now instead obtained when rewarded with a bronze decoration, the silver 'top 20%' badge is now instead obtained when rewarded with a silver decoration, and the gold 'top 5%' badge is now instead obtained when rewarded with a gold decoration). The descriptions of the badges have been changed accordingly.
  • Two new Tricolor Turf War stages: Crableg Capital and Bluefin Depot.
  • Disconnect ban timers can now only start upon receiving the pop-up message when attempting to join a match.
  • Two new videos were added to the hub and lobby jumbotrons, with one serving an in-universe advertisement for Brinewater Springs and the other for Mahi-Mahi Resort.

Fixes to Player Controls

  • Fixed an issue that sometimes caused the screen to freeze for a short while during battles or work shifts.
  • Fixed an issue that sometimes caused players who activated their Triple Splashdown special after performing certain actions to appear in a different location on the screens of other players.

Fixes to Salmon Run

  • Fixed an issue in Big Run that caused the news to not appear correctly when the event ended and prevented players from receiving a badge or decoration according to their high score.
    • Players who have already been affected by this issue can see the news play properly and also receive the badge or decorations they were supposed to receive by applying this update.
  • Fixed an issue that caused shots from the Crab Tank’s cannon to do less damage than before when hitting the body of a Steelhead while it’s growing a bomb from its head.

Other Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where, if a player’s system went into sleep mode and disconnected from the internet, then came out of sleep mode and the player restarted the game, the player would return to the square instead of where they were before.

Fixes to Multiplayer

  • Adjusted the change in color when affected by the Splattercolor Screen to make it more natural. The screen brightness of the effect itself has also been dimmed.

Fixes to Salmon Run

  • Made it possible for those who participated in the Big Run held from 12/2 to 12/4 and did not properly receive the decorations or badges for their scores to acquire the decorations and badges they should have received.
    • You can acquire them by entering the lobby after applying this update.

Other Fixes

  • Fixed an issue that sometimes caused a communication error to occur when players who have seen the news about the start of a new season and players who have not seen it communicate in the Shoal.

Fixes to Player Controls

  • Fixed an issue while charging a Fizzy Bomb that sometimes indicated the number of charged explosions had increased approximately 1/60 seconds faster than when they had actually increased.
  • Fixed an issue that sometimes caused the jumping animation to be omitted when the player activated the Kraken Royale while swimming in ink on a wall.
  • Fixed an issue that sometimes caused the Rainmaker to become embedded in the wall if a player carrying the Rainmaker was splatted while submerged in ink on a wall.

Fixes to Multiplayer

  • Fixed an issue in Bluefin Depot that caused players who activated the Zipcaster near certain areas on the elevators to clip into the terrain when they returned to their original spot after the effect ended.
  • Fixed an issue in Bluefin Depot that caused Tenta Missiles and Ink Storm to get cut off by things like the elevators or the metal bridge.
  • Fixed an issue in Bluefin Depot in Turf War and Tower Control modes that allowed players to unintentionally reach higher terrain by using Triple Splashdown in certain areas.
  • Fixed an issue in Bluefin Depot in all modes except Tower Control that allowed players to unintentionally land on certain terrain.
  • Fixed an issue in Bluefin Depot in Tower Control mode that allowed players to get inside certain terrain.
  • Fixed an issue in Bluefin Depot in Tower Control mode that prevented certain walls near the center of the stage from being inked correctly.
  • Fixed an issue in Bluefin Depot in Rainmaker mode where certain areas would not allow players to swim, even if those areas appeared to be inked.

Fixes to Salmon Run

  • Fixed an issue when replaying job scenarios recorded in past versions where a different King Salmonid would sometimes appear than the King Salmonid that appeared originally.
  • Fixed an issue that sometimes prevented players from being able to splat Boss Salmonids with a charged swipe using a Grizzco Splatana if another player on their work crew had a Splatana Stamper or Splatana Wiper.
  • Fixed an issue in Spawning Grounds that caused slowdown when players were on top of certain terrain.

Other Fixes

  • Fixed an issue on the locker editing screen that sometimes caused the name of a selected weapon to not display correctly when the weapon icons were arranged in a certain order.

Unlisted Changes

The new corrupted version of the blue metal barrel locker preview modded to display in-game
  • The "blue metal barrel" locker decoration item's unused preview image was corrupted in this update. Hacking the game to display it now results in a broken, garbled image.
