Streets of Rage 4/Unfinished Graphics

From The Cutting Room Floor

This is a sub-page of Streets of Rage 4.

Given the cartoonish/hand-drawn look of the game, it was to be expected that graphics drafts could be left in the game files since it is an important part of development. However, even considering that, the amount of unfinished graphics that was left in the game files is surprisingly big. From stage art to character art, there is a bit of everything.

And after the Mr. X Nightmare DLC update, a lot of unfinished frames of animation were added in almost every single enemy and playable character graphics folders. Since there is so much and a lot of them look alike, only the most relevant ones will be on this page.

Playable Characters

Their graphics folders are very disorganized, and most of them have several frames on different levels of production and testing.

Adam

All of the available Adam frames are simple lineart ones, without any coloring or shading. And some of them are plain unfinished.

Cherry

Like her father, all of Cherry's unfinished frames are simple lineart that lacks colors and shading.

Axel

Before the Mr. X Nightmare DLC update, a single frame of his scrapped run animation could be found in the game files. After the update, inside of Axel's alternate color palette folders, all of the missing frames were added.

Running is not present in the final game aside from Cherry, SoR2 Skate, and the Streets of Rage 3 characters. This tweet from before the update was released shows a running animation alongside an uppercut.

Blaze

She does not have much going on. Only some placeholders for the future alternate colors

Floyd

Floyd has a lot of unfinished frames in his graphics folders. It's worth noting that Floyd's cybernetic arms are located in another sub-folder and are assembled with the body during the game, which is why they are missing or sometimes just have a rough shape to be used as reference.

Estel

Estel's frames are kinda varied between each other, but most of them are simple linearts, except for the last two in this section that look to be some testing for future colors.

Max

Similar to Estel, but even more varied, with frames in various stages of development.

Shiva

Aside from the simple linearts, a couple of Shiva's frames have purple shading, probably to test his special effects.

Enemies

Almost all of the enemies have placeholder lineart frames with simple coloring for their variants, and sometimes some frames have different types of light testing going on. Below the images will be the specific variant name, which the frame was located on.

Y. Signal

Bronz

Feroccio (Cop)

Diamond

Diva

Donovan

Donovan is kind of a different case. For every single frame of animation he has, an identical unfinished one also exists in his graphics folder (except for the variants), and unlike most of the playable characters he isn't fully transparent inside.

Being one of the first enemies to be worked on, it probably had a different production process.

Dylan

Goro

Murphy

Raven

Stage Art

All of the stage arts are separated into small pieces on the game files, and during the game are all put together to give form to their designated stage. But for the sake of easier visualization, most of it was assembled together into a single image, and the black borders that come along in the background/foreground files were cut off whenever it was needed. There are also lots of identical-looking graphic files, so the redundant ones (or the files that didn't contain anything at all) were all left behind.

Stage 5 (Underground)

Drafts of the entire sewer section of Stage 5 were left in the files, which reveals some earlier hazard placements. The first images had to be separated into two pieces in order to be visible on the wiki.

Stage 6 (Chinatown)

Drafts from the Dojo section where you fight the Muay-Thai dudes.

Stage 8 (Art Gallery)

A single image related to the scrapped in-game sequence of the player breaking the wall.

Stage 9 (Y Tower)

Line art showing an early design for the elevator itself which has some little details not present in the final game and rough drafts for the background buildings.

Stage 10 (To The Concert)

Drafts for DJ K-Washi's Concert Area, which has a very different look for the background itself

Stage 11 (Airplane)

Line arts for almost the entire stage were left behind in the files, with the exception being the elevator at the start and Mr. Y's cockpit at the end of the stage.
