Streets of Rage 4/Unused Mr. X Nightmare DLC Content
This is a sub-page of Streets of Rage 4.
Released on July 15, 2021 alongside a free major update for the base game, Mr. X Nightmare is the first (and probably last) DLC for Streets of Rage 4. It adds a Survival Mode that takes place in a simulation made by Dr. Zan using the remnants of Mr. X's brain.
Also comes with "new" enemies, three new characters (plus a finally-playable SoR3 Roo), unlockable alternative moves, weapons, and a soundtrack composed entirely by Tee Lopes of Sonic Mania fame.
The DLC itself has a good amount of unused content.
Contents
Unused Graphics
Spike Wall
A hazard meant for the jungle-themed stages in Survival Mode. A good amount of different ones are used in the final game, but this one never spawns at all.
Retro Enemies
Art | Filename(s) | Description |
---|---|---|
tiger016 | A Tiger sprite that went unused in Streets of Rage 3 and meets the same fate here. | |
robotx043 / 044 | The classic fake Mr. X intro sprites from Streets of Rage 3 can be found inside the Robo X graphics folder. In this game, he just spawns directly to its original form. Oddly, the sprites of him standing up do not exist in the game files. | |
robotx060 | A single frame of his "get off me" attack that he does in Streets of Rage 3 when held in a grab for too long. In this game, he just jumps out of the grab. | |
robotx032 to 042 | The flames related to Robo X's transition into his default sprite. | |
robotx016 | The destroyed body of Robo X. When defeated, he just disappears like a normal enemy instead. The colors are messed up for some reason. | |
barbon001 to 006 | The sprites of SoR2 Barbon sprites behind the counter. The classic stages are not linked with each other in this game, making the possible inclusion of this animation completely pointless. | |
barbon007 to 011 | And then there's also his sprites before you fight him, like in Streets of Rage 2. Similar to the rest of the classic enemies, he just spawns in his idle stance. | |
electra012 to 023 | The Streets of Rage 2 Electra mini-boss intro. She just spawns like a common enemy instead. | |
yamoto022 / 039 to 043 | Yamato's outro from Streets of Rage 3. Curiously misspelled as "yamoto" in the game files. Once again, like a normal enemy, he just disappears when defeated. |
Gladiator Arena Signs
While these are used, in-game they're completely darkened with the rest of the audience. Extracting them from the game files reveals that most of them have some rather silly - and rather harmless - jokes written on them, making it unclear as to why they're not normally visible.
Note that the last three signs are actually in a single image file, but were separated to be easier to display here.
Unused Music
Early Primal Pummel
A different version of the music "Primal Pummel" (named 655216838.wem in the game files), that is featured on the Jungle-themed stages. Overall, it sounds significantly different from the one used in the final version, but it retains the same structure.
Unnamed Track #1
A very early track with an unknown purpose, since it doesn't resemble anything else in the final product (named 417481381.wem in the game files). When asked about it, Tee Lopes responded explained that "That was actually just an early demo that ended up staying in the code somehow. It isn't in the DLC because we went a different route. It's clearly unfinished."
Unnamed Track #2
And there is another one that has the same vibe from the first unused track (named 707151810.wem in the game files). Maybe it was intended to be used with the Volcano-themed stages, as it fits very well there. Probably scrapped for the same reasons as the first one.
Unfinished Encore
An early, slightly unfinished version of the "Encore" music (which plays at the Results Screen of Survival Mode) can also be found on the game files.

Unused Sounds
To do: There's probably more. |
Filename | Sound | Description |
---|---|---|
Estel Voice Lines | ||
.004 | "How's that feel?" Unknown purpose. | |
.089 | "Watch out!" Maybe intended to be used with the Grenade special attacks. | |
.224 | "I'll make you hurt!" Probably related to a scrapped alternative Star Move or the Police Tackle special move. | |
.233 | "Don't mess with me." Could have fit well at the end of her Police Tackle special move. | |
.397 | "Take that!" Another finishing line to the Police Tackle? | |
Max Voice Lines | ||
.037 | "Atta!/Thunder!" An outtake for his Thunder Tackle special move, which tries to sound closer to the original version. | |
.077 | Ditto. | |
Shiva Voice Lines | ||
.213 | "Thousand Fist." An English version of his Senretsu Ken special move. I guess saying it in Japanese makes it cooler. | |
.213 | "Heart stop!" Unknown purpose. Probably for a scrapped alternative move. | |
.282 | Ditto. | |
.468 | "Tensho Uchi." "Tencho" means revolving hands/rotating palms, and "Uchi" is a form of striking in Karate that uses the back or the bottom of the fist. The closest move that could be related to this sound is Shiva's back attack. | |
Miscellaneous | ||
.131 | An unused powerup sound from Survival Mode, that features a character grunt (probably Adam) at the end. | |
.132 | A very quiet guitar riff. Something related to Cherry? | |
.526 | One of the hit sounds from Streets of Rage 2. | |
.709 | Hakuyo's "Hiyaa!" from Streets of Rage 2. He is oddly mute during his flying kick attack, probably a mistake. |
