As the video game industry moved into the 16-bit generation, Nintendo would step in a bit later than planned.

The Super Famicom released in Japan on November 21, 1990 launching alongside F-Zero and Super Mario World. The Super Famicom quickly took over Japan, surpassing NEC's PC Engine and Sega's Mega Drive to become the most dominant video game system in the country up until the release of the Sony PlayStation.

Meanwhile in North America, the Nintendo Entertainment System was losing its grip in market share with competition from NEC with the TurboGrafx-16 and Sega with the Sega Genesis. Details about the Super Famicom would be reported on up until the system officially released albeit with different branding and a system redesign.

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System released in North America on August 23, 1991. However, fierce competition from Sega would result in what is widely regarded as one of the most notorious console rivalries in video game history. In Europe, the system would release in 1992 with Super NES branding but with the system design of the Super Famicom.

The system was host to more legendary classic games than perhaps any other, though it certainly had its share of stinkers as well.
