Super Mario 4 is a rather infamous bootleg hack of Crayon Shin-chan 4: Ora no Itazura Dai Henshin that alters a good amount of the graphics to Mario-series stuff, with the end result doing a better job of looking like a legit entry of the series it's aping from than most bootlegs.

Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of having any kind of story, the original's minigames, or Super Game Boy compatibility, on top of being much more frustrating thanks to the new level designs (lots of blind jumps and points where Mario has to take damage to progress) and a complete lack of continues or passwords.

This game is, of course, not to be confused with the actual fourth Super Mario game.

Hmmm...
To do:
  • Can we restore the SGB support from the original game?
  • Is there any way to play the minigames? Selecting it on the cheat menu simply brings you to Stage 1.
  • Any more leftovers from the original game?

Password Screen

Hmmm...
To do:
Find a better way to access this.

By loading a save state from Crayon Shin-Chan 4, you will find the fully-functional password menu with all the passwords from said game working (even with music!) though with Shin-Chan's graphics being garbled. Doing this also seems to load the SGB features of that game.

Second and Third Quests

You can access the second and third quests with the password screen above. The game hangs after you lose a life, though.

Unused Stage 1 Intro

On the above password screen, you can use the cheat menu password from the original game. An unused intro screen for Stage 1 can be seen by setting the first value to 7 in the cheat menu and pressing Start.

Alternate Ending

The alternate ending from Crayon Shin-Chan 4 can be seen by setting the third value to 2 on the aforementioned menu and pressing Start. Since the game prevents you from entering the password screen through normal means, you can't access the second or third quests, thus preventing this ending from being triggered.
