Il Super Mario Bros. 2 giapponese è in pratica Super Mario Bros. con la difficoltà aumentata alle stelle. Lo spazio esteso fornito dal formato a dischetto ha permesso di avere livelli più lunghi e complessi, molte nuove meccaniche, ed un totale di 13 mondi ... ma complessivamente, è essenzialmente lo stesso gioco.
A causa principalmente della sua difficoltà e somiglianza con il suo predecessore, i giocatori d'oltreoceano non hanno ottenuto la possibilità di giocarci fino al rilascio di Super Mario All-Stars, anche se in forma rifatta. La versione sbloccabile inclusa con Super Mario Bros. Deluxe non aveva le grafiche uniche del rilascio originale o ogni cosa normalmente accessibile dopo l'8-4, ed i gamer non giapponesi non hanno avuto modo di giocare al gioco non modificato fino a quando non è stato rilasciato internazionalmente sulla Virtual Console Wii.
Grafiche Inutilizzate
Due tile di terreno ed un cactus possono essere trovate alla fine del file delle grafiche SM2CHAR1. L'ultima tile, una variazione dall'apparenza neutrale della tile di terreno di Super Mario Bros., in realtà appare in ogni screenshot del manuale di gioco, il che suggerisce che è stata cambiata verso la fine dello sviluppo.
Differenze Revisionali
Nel 2004, Super Mario Bros. 2 fu rilasciato come parte della serie giapponese Famicom Mini per il Game Boy Advance come Famicom Mini vol. 21. Il cambiamento più significativo in questa versione è che A + Start ti permette di, dopo aver ottenuto un Game Over, tornare indietro immediatamente all'inizio del mondo in cui sei morto (esclusi i Mondi 9 e A-D). Ciò non solo rende l'opzione "Continue" (Continua) ridondante, ma ha alcuni altri effetti:
- Utilizzando il menu dell'emulatore (accessibile premendo L + R) per salvare il tuo punteggio salverà anche l'ultimo mondo in cui sei morto, il che significa che la combinazione A + Start funzionerà anche dopo aver spento il gioco, che permette di completare il gioco in sessioni multiple.
- È possibile scambiare Mario e Luigi nel mezzo del gioco senza dover ricominciare daccapo, una cosa non possibile nella versione FDS.
- Dopo aver suparato l'8-4 otto volte, il giocatore deve premere B + Start allo schermo del titolo per accedere al Mondo A-1 anziché A + Start come nella versione FDS.
Questi cambiamenti non sono stati mantenuti nelle versioni 3DS e Wii/Wii U, le quali si comportano nella stessa maniera della versione FDS originale.
