Super Paper Mario/English Translation Differences

From The Cutting Room Floor
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is a sub-page of Super Paper Mario.

  • The European version added an exclamation mark for the text "Level Up" which was missing in the US version.
  • A small horizontal line in the middle of a "7" was added in the European version, most likely to avoid confusion with "1".

Japanese to English

Hmmm...
To do:
What do the other languages say about Vivian and Watt?
  • Merlumina has the same Japanese name as Madam Merlar from the original Paper Mario (クリスタール, Kurisutāru), suggesting that she is this game's incarnation of the character (like with Merlon, Merlee, and Merluvlee).
Japanese Translation English
「マリオストーリー」に
とうじょうした マリオのなかま
あかちゃんなのに とても アタマがいい
あかるく 暗やみを てらすことができた
One of Mario's partners,
introduced in Paper Mario.
Very smart for a baby. Could
shine bright to light up the darkness.
This is Mario's good buddy
Watt from Paper Mario.
This guy was pretty bright
for his age!

Just like in the first game, Watt's English Catch Card description mistakenly refers to her as male. This is due to the Japanese description lacking any kind of pronoun, making her gender ambiguous without prior context.

Japanese Translation English
「ペーパーマリオRPG」に
とうじょうした マリオのなかま
火の魔法を 使う キュートな オトコのコ
カゲの三人組という てきの1人だった
One of Mario's partners, introduced in
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.
A cute boy wielding fire magic
who was once part of a group of
enemies known as the Shadow Trio.
It's Vivian from the last
Paper Mario adventure.
She was a great friend once
she split from her sisters.

Similarly, Vivian's Japanese Catch Card description refers to him/her as male, in accordance with the Japanese version of The Thousand-Year Door.

Japanese Translation English
ザコの中のザコ・・・
キング・オブ・ザコと よばれている・・・
これといった とくちょうは ない・・・
It's often called
"the small fry among small fries"...
or "King of the Small Fries"...
It has no distinguishing characteristics...
It really puts the "under" back in "underlings"...
It has no remarkable traits...

Tippi's tattle for a Goomba references both Goombario and Goombella's comments about them.

Language Text Translation

This text is said by Tippi when you tattle yourself in 8-1 between when the stairs appear by solving the torch puzzle and the opening cutscene of the O'Chunks fight (when GSW 0, the sequence value, is 363). But apparently a mistake was made in the non-Japanese versions. Somehow "ルミエール" ("Rumiēru") - Blumiere in the English localisation - got translated as Grambi, a character from Chapter 7, who is called "グランエル ("Guran Eru") in Japanese.

English Text Differences

  • Every instance in the game in the US version saying "spanking" was changed to "clobbering" or "yelling" in the European version. This is most notable with O'Chunks's dialogue.
  • The green character named Chap on the second floor of Flipside is renamed Glim, presumably to correspond to his Flopside counterpart Slim and to distinguish him from another Flipside resident named Chap in The Underwhere milk bar.
  • Merlee's guard dogs Gnip and Gnaw are renamed Howl and Growl, respectively.
  • Spit Roast, one of Saffron's dishes, was renamed to Roast Meat.
  • Cooking Disk [R/W/Y/B/G/PU] was renamed to Cooking Disk [2/3/4/5/6/7].

US Europe
Dimentio: I think I'll start with the green one. The shag upon his lip will make a fine trophy. Dimentio: I think I'll start with the green one, he looks like a pushover.
Luigi: SHAG?! This mustache is all LUIGI! Luigi: Pushover?! I'll show you who's a pushover!
Luigi: Besides, he made fun of my 'stache, Bro! Luigi: Besides, he called me a pushover, Bro!
  • Dimentio's insult toward Luigi was changed for the European version. In this context, "shag" is intended to be Luigi's mustache. However, this can be misinterpreted in British English to mean engaging in sexual intercourse. The reference to the mustache was edited out and the European version essentially says he simply looks weak. Compared to the rest of Dimentio's lines, this is rather bland. Luigi's response was edited likewise, causing him to sound slightly more aggressive.

  • This Catch Card's text was likely edited for the European version because the word "bonk" is slang for sexual intercourse in British English.

  • In America, a building's first floor is the ground floor, while in Europe, a building's first floor is above the ground floor. The floors of Flipside and Flopside were renamed to match this convention.
