Version differences : censorship

I remember reading about this in a magazine, but apparently there was some censorship applied to the US version of Bloodlines compared to the Japanese version (simply called Vampire Killer), much like in other games in the series. I remember specifically reading about fountains of blood replaced with the more traditional fountain of water and nude statues with added stolae. I was gearing up to take screenshots of this in both versions but I'm terrible at the game. Can anyone confirm this ? --Octaedre 11:59, 27 January 2013 (EST)

I'm not really familiar with this game, but I've been playing through it so I'll try to note things like this. Blood was definitely censored in the European version, I mean they even removed it from the game's title! Eric was a lot less manly in the Japanese version, and supposedly the Japanese version is easier overall. There's very little, if any, censorship in the US version. The fountain of blood, the corpse being pecked by crows, and so forth are all there. It was a Genesis game, and with "blood" in its title, after all. In any case, the article already goes over the changes made to the European version, which actually was censored quite a bit in the violence department.--mercatfat
Yeah, I added those changes yesterday after doing a quick comparison of the different versions. Like I said before, I'm not very familiar with this game, and just figured I'd look into differences since I wanted to play it anyway. Molten Steel Room

The article just kind of matter of factly states that there was a molten steel room in Stage 4, but doesn't back it up with any evidence outside of the unused sprites. It even describes behavior for those sprites. It's not that I don't believe this stage existed, but if there's evidence of it (magazine scans or whatever), it should probably be put in the article, otherwise it just comes across as speculation. --Dragonsbrethren 13:44, 14 April 2013 (EDT)

It definitely did exist at one point in time, and there is a screenshot floating around the internet that exists from a US prototype build from an ebay auction eons ago that unfortunately had never been dumped. sorry about the ugly watermark on it, but its the best i could find.

Just as a note: it's fairly easy to make a mock-up screen without any actual evidence to back that the mock-up is real. I'm not pulling my bet as to whether it's a real screenshot or not, but I am saying that just because someone purportedly had a prototype cartridge up on ebay, and that this image was related to that auction, doesn't necessarily entail that at some point in development that area existed.
Anything can be shown in a mock-up, even things not able to actually run on the system it's purported to be running on (see: Link's Awakening early screenshots/scans).--Celice 04:22, 16 April 2013 (EDT)
Wow, that one's new to me, the only shot I've ever seen from that proto was the zeppelin. I doubt it's a hoax, since that proto was put up for auction years ago and I think these graphics were uncovered fairly recently. So bizarre that two seemingly near-complete sections of that stage got cut, the final version feels like such a mish-mash of areas. --Dragonsbrethren 05:33, 16 April 2013 (EDT)

Beta Hex Strings

I've been playing through the beta ROM. Outside of some very minor things, like the default difficulty being easy instead of normal, the only difference that's jumped out at me is that three hex strings are occasionally printed on the game over screen. One string ends with G and one with H; I'm not really familiar with the Genesis but maybe that'll help narrow down what they are for someone. I don't know what causes them to show, nor their placement/orientation; I've only had them come up twice out of four game overs. Someone who knows more about the Genesis might want to look into this. --Dragonsbrethren 17:17, 15 April 2013 (EDT)

Actually, what you're seeing is the character's "sprite", Mainly because this beta doesn't properly remove the characters once it gets to the Game Over screen. It's merely just something the Beta forgot to do properly, and since the font overwrites the chartacter tiles in the game's ram/VDP, you get this. The New Generation Beta
