Unused Track's Purpose?

The unused track might have been intended for the password entry in Wily Tower.--Ekkusuman88 18:11, 17 February 2011 (EST)

The game has no password entry, they all use the same save/load screen.--Ragey 07:05, 18 February 2011 (EST)
Correction: it may have been used for the save/load screen in Wily Tower.--Ekkusuman88 17:00, 18 February 2011 (EST)
It just use the standard save dialog. I could look to see if there was a deleted dialogue, but... Jesus Christ Wily Wars is a prime example of worse-than-thedailywtf code... - Andlabs 17:25, 18 February 2011 (EST)
Wait a minute..... Oh, hold on. I meant the screen after a game over. That's where.--Ekkusuman88 20:07, 18 February 2011 (EST)
The unused theme sounds like it was intended for the Continue/Stage Select screen, as Wily Tower does have its own unique Game Over theme, but uses the Mega Man 3 Continue/Stage Select(/Password) theme. In theory, it could also have been used as a "weapon get" theme, provided such a feature was actually planned for Wily Tower to begin with. ~ Doc Lithius (Info|Chat|Edits) 12:50, 27 November 2011 (EST)

Only on Sega Channel?

I picked up a North American cartridge of this game last week at a pawn shop. --Dr. Yay 23:58, 28 June 2013 (EDT)

It was likely a repro. There was never an official release of the game as a US cartridge. -TheKins 05:57, 29 June 2013 (EDT)
Yep, any cartridge/box labeled "Genesis", and certain PAL Mega Drive ones (ex. those with the older style Mega Drive branding/box design), are reproductions. --Xdaniel 11:39, 29 June 2013 (EDT)

Mega Man 1-3 Weapons in Any Game?

Using patch codes, you can play Mega Man 1-3 using a completely different set of weapons. For example, you can go through the first game with the third game's weapons and abilities... or, the second game with the first game's weapons. You can also activate the Wily Tower menu... but, it's pretty useless, unless you set the weapons, first, and it tends to glitch out the levels, anyway. But, that's not why I bring this up. The reason I bring this up... is that that (most of) the bosses in The Wily Wars can be beaten with weapons from the wrong games.

Some situations aren't that surprising. For example, Metalman dies in two hits of the Rolling Cutter and Iceman goes down in three uses of the Spark Shock. This is because, when coding the game, the programmers made certain weapons of certain types share damage data. They also made the Mega Man 2 Robot Masters and Doc Robots share damage data charts, with the exceptions of Doc Woodman, Doc Heatman, and Doc Quickman. But, here's the thing... Some bosses are actually vulnerable to unexpected weapons. Like... why would Fireman need to be so weak against Top Spin or Bubble Lead? Or, why would Needleman be so weak against Thunder Beam... despite being completely immune to Spark Shock? (He's also weak against, strangely, Atomic Fire L2 but not weak to L3.)

In any case, as that article suggests, we theorize that, maybe, you were meant to be able to take any weapon into any game, at some point. Or, at the very least, there may have been some sort of "boss gauntlet" mode or level, in or after Wily Tower.

Just a thought – one that I've been hanging on to for a while, now.

Retro-bit ROM Slowdown

I just stumbled upon a copy of Retro-bit ROM. This version supposedly eliminates slowdown. Well, in my limited testing… the only real difference on the surface is that the game loads in 8 frames rather than 155. Using Thunder Beam still slows everything down to 33% and up to 50% of maximum gameplay speed.

Since the patch codes are incompatible between versions, I haven't tested the Buster Rod G refight to see if that still lags like crazy. I might convert some codes and do it later, though. Maybe…

Upon further research, I am full of caca-dookie. The Retrobit ROM actually does optimize the coding to some degree. There is significantly less slowdown in general areas of the game. Some bosses, however – most notably the Yellow Devil Mk-II fight and Buster Rod G's refight in Wily Tower 3 – slow the game to about half speed. Even so, impressive work was done.
The Mega Drive Mini ROM, on the other hand, has had minimal changes done to it. So few, in fact, that any ROM hacks that work for Mega World also work for this one. Turns out the Mini just uses a more powerful processor. Overclocking the Motorola 68000 chip would have the same effect on an original Mega Drive. Go figure.
