Unknown Item

It might actually be a B on there. The transparency shouldn't be like that for 日, since it would never have the second stroke go smaller then bigger again. --Tauwasser 10:54, 21 May 2010 (EDT)

True, but such a small difference may not be visible on a TV screen. It may even be intentionally ambiguous to make localization easier. I'd love to check what it looks like in-game, but I don't have a working Gameshark. --Joe 21:09, 22 May 2010 (EDT)

Crash Debug Screens

I don't know if it's worth mentioning or not, but it's possible to access crash debug screens via the crooked cartridge trick. When copying a save file, you do the trick, and then you get a save file that's both complete and not complete at the same time. However, the game crashes when Mario walks into certain areas, as I've experienced first-hand. These areas are the southern-most area of Toad Town, and a room in Dry Dry Ruins. But I'm not a smart enough person to know what they mean... >.<

Also, if the last save on the copied save file was in Peach's/Bowser's castle, it's possible to start Peach cutscenes with Twink even though you're playing as Mario. Your partner acts as Twink during these times and has weird, yet specific animations for talking as Twink, which can be seen in this video [1] . Thoughts? --Spiritix 06:44, 10 November 2012 (EST)

Hmmm....I know this is over a year old, but I thought I'd still respond. It seems like it would only be worthwhile if the animations are actually....well, animations. Because they could just be sprites acting up. Now, if those are actually in the game data....
Although we don't even know if they apply to all partners. I mean, only Goombario was in that video. I wonder if other partners do a similar thing? I can't test because I don't have a physical copy of Paper Mario. (And even then, I wouldn't want to tilt my cartridge....) but if someone can find me a save version of this for Wii Virtual Console or (more likely) Project 64, I'd be happy to record it using either FRAPS or Hauppauge Game Capture 2. But I mean, it's cartridge tilting. So the only way to actually get this save would be to execute this on a real N64 and then copy the file over....:/ Robotortoise 01:35, 26 July 2013 (EDT)

Likely reason for music change

The Japanese version of the "new partner" song is ridiculously similar to the song "America" from West Side Story. (No, really, go listen to it.) I'm guessing it was probably changed to avoid a lawsuit from Leonard Bernstein... --CodeMan38 10:46, 10 August 2013 (EDT)

The other unused enemies in battle.

Currently, only Dark Paratroopa and Albino Dino can be seen in battle, due to the fact that they are both in unused formation groups, but for the others, it looks like they weren't even put in any formations.

Maybe there is some way to modify an enemy in one specific formation group to one of the unused enemies? Of course, we don't know how functionally complete the enemies are.

Anyone want to look into this? I would myself, but finding the enemy values for one specific formation in Cheat Engine is VERY hard to find out.--Goomther (talk) 23:22, 9 October 2013 (EDT)

Depending on how easy it is to get assets of certain rooms out of the ROM, I might be able to help. It'll be a matter of figuring out where formations are stored and what to change to make the unused enemies appear. -Gamma (talk) 23:29, 9 October 2013 (EDT)
This guy hacked Whacka into a formation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j82ADx-aMWg
Well, now we know how functionally complete Whacka is, we still don't know about the other enemies. Anyone want to try and hack them into a formation? --Goomther (talk) 01:57, 22 April 2014 (EDT)
It looks as though there's an editor for formations (and other things) that looks set to be released sometime soon. -Einstein95 (talk) 02:04, 22 April 2014 (EDT)
Mm, well, I didn't actually hack it in, I just compiled them all into a nice video. This is the person that did the hacking. If you look at the explanation he gives, it seems that the Whacka with that hack is behaving as a Monty Mole in-battle, so he can actually have more functionality were he put into a formation properly Skawo (talk) 02:59, 22 April 2014 (EDT)

Two things

  • Does this actually exist in the game?
  • Two paper mario 64 editors have been created recently.

--Hiccup (talk) 08:07, 2 July 2014 (EDT)

I actually confim that that unsused soundtrack is found ingame, on code 00F33060:00000A40. -RobiNERD (talk) 14:34, 18 June 2016 (EDT)

NPC out of bounds?

At 2:08 in this video, the player goes out of bounds on the main city. You can see a plant dude under the ground. It's been ages since I last played the game, so can anybody confirm if this guy is meant to be there, if it is actually on the regular town, but the out-of-bounds glitch causes the sprites to show up incorrectly, or anything else? {EspyoT} 09:55, 2 July 2014 (EDT)

It's been a while since I played the game, but doesn't a plant guy appear there later in the game, I think? Maybe the game keeps all NPCs physically on the map, even if they are not visible. Two ways I can see this being confirmed, using a walk in air code to talk to the plant guy out of bounds to see if he says something familiar or some of the recent level editing progress for this game allows you to see a list of npcs in an area, to see if there are two plant guys or just one. --Hiccup (talk) 12:59, 2 July 2014 (EDT)
Yea, the game stores all the actors needed in cutscenes below the map, for example all the Star Spirits are under the boss maps etc. That Bub-ulb appears when you interact with the flower near the bottom entrance. --PPLToast (talk) 13:19, 2 July 2014 (EDT)

badge codes

anybody know action replay codes for the badges?(or whatever codes, doesn't need to be ar. any way at all to get the badges in game)

Can anything not be tattled in the game?

I would like to check TheRewster's text dump for unused tattles (including out-of battle tattles) , but I'm not that familar with the game. Could someone tell me if there are any enemies or anything that can't be tattled? --Hiccup (talk) 14:47, 24 July 2014 (EDT)

The only things that come to mind are Bowser in the very beginning of the game (before meeting Goombario) and Kammy Koopa, who only fights against Peach & Twink. Unlike in PMTYD, Goombario is always available for all of the other battles. I recommend looking up a list of all of the enemies in the game. You can find one on mariowiki. --Peardian (talk) 22:56, 24 July 2014 (EDT)
There's also Fuzzipede, who is impossible to tattle while battling him, because you can't see him without Watt. According to MarioWiki, he has a tattle, but I dunno. --PPLToast (talk) 05:32, 25 July 2014 (EDT)
These seem to be all the bowser tattles:
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
It's the Evil King Bowser!
Finally, after all this time!

Max HP: 50, Defense Power: 1

He has a huge arsenal of
attacks, from blowing clouds
of fire to jumping on us.

Fire Attack: 8,
Stamp Attack/Nail Attack: 6

I'm sure he has other attacks
that I don't know.
Boy, does he look nasty!

He's strong enough as it is,
but I'm sure he can use that
Star Rod to increase his power
until he's nearly invincible.

Princess Peach needs us!
Let's take him, Mario!
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
It's the Evil King Bowser!
Uh... I think he got bigger.
That's not a good sign...

Max HP: 99, Defense Power: 2

He has a huge arsenal of
attacks, from blowing clouds
of fire to jumping on us.

Fire Attack: 10,
Stamp Attack/Nail Attack: 8

I'm sure he has other attacks
that I don't know.

Kammy Koopa's mysterious
device has somehow beefed up
his power even more.
That's hardly fair!

You should use that Star Beam
whenever he uses the Star Rod
to increase his power.
Oh, you already knew that?
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
It's the Evil King Bowser!
No more messing around!

Max HP: 99, Defense Power: 2

He has a huge arsenal of
attacks, from blowing clouds
of fire to jumping on us.

Fire Attack: 10,
Stamp Attack/Nail Attack: 8

I'm sure he has other attacks
that I don't know.

When he increases his power
with the Star Rod, our attacks
will be totally useless.

When that happens, you must
use our ultimate weapon, the
Peach Beam! It has the power
of everyone's wishes!

This is our time, Mario!
Let's take this chump!
We're coming, Princess!
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Fuzzipede doesn't have an in-battle tattle. Kammy Koopa doesn't have any tattle. MarioWiki, as usual has made up some of their tattles on their bestiary.

Are all these Bowser ones used? Any other keywords you want me to search for? --Hiccup (talk) 09:17, 25 July 2014 (EDT)

Yea those Bowser ones are used, as can be seen on the MarioWiki page. The Fuzzipede one is used outside of battles. I don't think there's anything to find in the Text Dump tbh. --PPLToast (talk) 10:26, 25 July 2014 (EDT)

The first encounter with Jr. Troopa had Goompa instead of Goombario. — NES Boy (talk) 04:40, 27 July 2014 (EDT)

Unused Battle Property?

The in-game tattle log for Spiked Goombas says this:

This is a Spiked Goomba. Spiked Goombas are Goombas with spikes on their
heads.
Max HP: 2, Attack Power: 2, Defense Power: 0
Whatever you do, don't jump on their spikes or you'll get hurt or even
paralyzed!

I tried this several times on purpose and never got paralyzed from doing so. Could this possibly be an odd translation or an unimplemented behavior? The preceding unsigned comment was added by DangItBobby (talk • contribs)

Considering that the translation of Paper Mario is "Unique" (One of the character that I forgot his/her name is actually a woman in the Spanish Translation, but is unknown elsewhere being a prime example), I do think this is another thing lost in translation.

Question

I've been wondering, does the slot machine in Shy Guy's Toy Box actually have an HP value in the coding? Binarystep (talk) 17:59, 3 May 2015 (EDT)

Paper Mario new debug room?

Can I ask you if the room at code 0078 is a debug room? I was examinating the rom for hacking purposes and found this... The preceding unsigned comment was added by Robinerd (talk • contribs)

It isn't. Remember that cutscene that plays at the very end of the game right after Bowser's Castle explodes? This is that room. In-game it looks like this, but accessing it directly seems to cause some issues. The room's internal name is hos_10 and it is located at 0xA3F740 in the ROM. --RanASTC 19:53, 2 April 2016 (EDT)

Red Flower Debug Text

Giving Mario a Blue Berry with E9664B9C 59F0 or a Yellow Berry with E9664B9C 59FA and warping to the Red Flower room with 810740B0 0137 does indeed show the unused text.

Not sure what the best procedure is for adding it to the page, so I'll just leave it here for the time being.

Crash Handler contents

The handler info (which likely happens during unexpected CPU exceptions), for as far as I can translate it (mostly a register dump anyway):

  • THREAD: The thread ID. The game itself probably handles threads for various tasks.
  • The error names are MIPS exceptions. TLB (translation lookaside buffer) exceptions are related to virtual memory.
  • PC: Program counter (where was the CPU running code in when the exception occurred). Likely actually the EPC register in the exception handling coprocessor.
  • SR: A MIPS state/control register. Should be interpreted on a bit basis: bits can either signal a state or control a setting for the CPU. Likely actually the Status register in the exception handling coprocessor.
  • VA: The BadVAddr register in the exception handling coprocessor: address in memory where the exception occurred.
  • AT, V0-V1, A0-A3, T0-T7, S0-S7, T8-T9, GP, SP, S8, RA: State of registers. Since MIPS has general-purpose registers, they are named as in the "O32" calling convention, one of the more common ways to label the registers. Here's the purpose of these registers according to O32:
    • AT is an "assembler temporary" register used in some common CPU operations
    • V0-V1 contains return values of functions
    • A0-A3 contains function arguments
    • T0-T9 are temporary registers
    • S0-S7 are saved temporary registers, values that should never be changed by any called function (so after calling a function, values of S0-S7 will always be the same as before calling it).
    • GP has the global pointer used to access global variables.
    • SP is the stack pointer.
    • S8 (also called FP in MIPS programming) is the frame pointer, which contains the location of the stack frame within memory.
    • RA contains a return address. This is used when calling "leaf" subroutines - as in subroutines that do not call other ones, since it's faster than having the return address in the stack. This sort of register is usually called a link register.
  • MM: this value is probably related to the MMU in some way.

The rest are values from the floating-point coprocessor.

  • FPCSR: FPU control and status register
  • F0-F30: Floating-point general purpose registers. There are actually 32 of these registers, but Paper Mario seems to use them in 2 register pairs to store double-precision (64-bit) floating-point numbers.

Unused Partners

Remember when we talked about Goombella? Well, why not also about goompa, he is also an unused partner well I guess so. The preceding unsigned comment was added by BetaTalk64 (talk • contribs)

Goombella isn't in this game; do you mean Goombaria? It's true that Goompa never normally shows up in the partner list, but he is indeed your partner during most the Prologue until Goombario replaces him. Unlike Goompa, Goombaria is not Mario's partner at any point in the game, so she's completely unused. --Kimimaru (talk) 08:06, 1 April 2017 (EDT)
Well, thanks for telling me. I know that goompa can be used with the retrigger prologue glitch. But whatever, gombaria is STILL my favorite unused thing. The preceding unsigned comment was added by BetaTalk64 (talk • contribs)

Question

So, going through the game's text, I found the string "Monty's Hole" with other enemy names. Does anyone know if this is unused? Binarystep (talk) 22:48, 13 June 2017 (EDT)

Yes, this is unused since you cannot target the holes and see the name. This is interesting considering the holes Monty Moles are in do not disappear after defeating the mole. Perhaps they were planning to have more Monty Moles spawn from the holes? --Kimimaru (talk) 02:12, 5 July 2017 (EDT)

Whacka (Pro Mode)

"In Paper Mario Pro Mode, a hack of this game, the battle gets re-activated, complete with tattle data!"

There are three entries for Whacka in the battle script data: 09_WhackaA, 09_WhackaB, and 09_WhackaC. Is Whacka's battle sequence (Ex. what it does on its turn) in Pro Mode actually a revival utilizing these scripts or is it something new? If it's the latter, this note should probably be removed from the page. --Kimimaru (talk) 21:02, 19 December 2017 (EST)

tst_12 map

Paper mario tst 12 map.png

Is this map unused? Looks like it's a flower fields map.

Also, some speculation - Many of the internal map file names extracted from Star Rod are sorted by (Location#), and they jump quite a bit. Possible that there are some cut/deleted maps? Some of these maps are empty other than some objects.

--Flargy filler (talk) 17:45, 10 October 2018 (EDT)

About the Star Road maps, it's likely that some were deleted, but I don't know if there's any way to know for sure yet so it's just speculation. A lot of them are only used in cutscenes, which explain why they're mostly empty. On the other hand, tst_12 is one of the debug/test maps and I can confirm it's completely unused. I can't actually access it at all in-game without it freezing and I don't know why. How were you able to render it? --RanASTC 05:31, 11 October 2018 (EDT)
It's currently loaded in the Star Rod map editor on that screenshot. It may be possible to restore it in game via editing it in the map editor, but that might not be certain. --Flargy filler (talk) 06:46, 11 October 2018 (EDT)

What is the 'Unused area in the before-koopa bros fortress map?' thing all about in the todo list? It dosen't say anything about it

Do any of you seem to know? --Marcus (talk) 02:21, 13 August 2020 (UTC)

Its out of bounds geometry in either the "outside Koopa Bros' Fortress" map or the map to the left of that. --Hiccup (talk) 20:59, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Nintendo Switch Online crash?

Should we add the crash that happens when you get a game over with Watt as your partner in the Nintendo Switch Online version of the game in the bugs section? -legitknight39 (talk) 00:52, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

Asked about this on the TCRF Discord, the answer is no. Inaccurate emulation can lead to so many different and new bugs that would never happen on the original hardware that to document those bugs could be an endless task. -- Luna (talk) 18:12, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Re: C-down oddity

Stepping towards Mario like that is just a default behavior shared by most/all of the partners. Goombario always does it after tattling (more noticeable in maps that don't have a tattle (such as the debug rooms), since he just steps forward). Sushie does it if you're not at one of her docks. Goompa does it because he doesn't do anything else (same for Goombaria). So basically yes, it is a consequence of how the partners are coded, not a leftover. Dunno if that still makes it pageworthy or not, just thought I'd share what I recall. --Alley (talk) 19:28, 22 May 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation. Probably not pageworthy then. --Hiccup (talk) 13:06, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

Is this dialogue used?

Oh... Eeew!
I look frightful!
It's not real, Princess...
but... I must say...
That's not a good look for you.

This is one of the conversations Peach and Twink have when looking at the stuff in Peach's room, but I don't recall ever seeing it in-game. It sounds like it could be for the vanity, but when you interact with it she just powders her nose. Is this actually unused or did I just miss it somewhere? --Alley (talk) 01:48, 1 September 2022 (UTC)

It's used when looking in the mirror in Peach's room while disguised during the post-Chapter 6 part. --Luigi-San (talk) 02:02, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
Ohh, okay. Yeah, I didn't think to check it after using the parasol. Thanks. --Alley (talk) 06:26, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
