I knew I had seen those first two maps somewhere years and years ago - an old demo version of Ruby, playable at a Japanese event, a video of which I had downloaded and watched years ago. Prototype maps

Xdan, did you check all the regions of the game (Japan, etc). Maybe they did a minor clean up for the U.S release if you were using the U.S version to look for map data...

I checked the Japanese version first, since it was the first version to be released, and it doesn't contain the map data. The US version doesn't either, but all the text used by events on the two maps has been translated into English there. Dunno if ex. some trainers there are still used in-game, but I guess that ex. the sign saying "Welcome to the World of POKéMON!" isn't. Guess I'll look into ex. the German version to at least see if they translated the text there as well. --Xdaniel 14:10, 4 June 2010 (EDT)

This is the most fascinating part to me. Does this mean that gen 2 migration was considered, or that the engine was a heavily modified gen 2 engine? (which in turn was a modified gen 1). Unused NPC/sprite

I remember this old thread about sprites of a character from another Game Freak game, Mendel Palace (for NES), being found in one of the GBA Pokémon games. I even remember a video of it being posted on YouTube somewhere, but I can't seem to find it... Unused Music Track IDs

I created this list of unused music values by using Sappy 2006 mod 15. I searched for all of the unused music in the Pokémon - Sapphire Version (USA) ROM, and converted the song values displayed by the program to hexadecimal.

0x15E: Weird version of Littleroot Town theme
0x15F: Route 38/39 theme (GSC)
0x164: Pokémon Communication Center theme (Crystal)
0x165: Saffron City theme (GSC)
0x166: Suicune, Raikou, Entei Battle (Crystal)
0x189: Contest test 1
0x18A: Contest test 2
0x18B: Contest test 3
0x18C: Contest test 4
0x1D3: Team Rocket's takeover of Goldenrod's Radio Tower (GSC) (Interestingly, this is the very last track in the data!)

It is, it's a trainer theme, namely for the Gentleman trainer class. I don't know why the debugger copy calls it a testing song though. --Team Fail (talk) 03:20, 4 June 2015 (EDT)

Mawile's Pokédex entry

According to Bulbapedia, American copies of Ruby erroneously spell Mawile as "Mawhile" in its Pokédex entry. However, I have an American copy that spells it correctly. Is this some revisional difference that hasn't been discovered yet? --Blaziken257 22:34, 3 April 2013 (EDT)

Inside the truck map location

Could it be that its coordinates are undefined? If so, I don't think we should list it as unused content. The position shown in the image is at the top-left selectable corner of the map, which could be coordinates of 0,0, but I don't know the mechanics of it. Unused text strings: "a NORMAL move", etc

Apparently there's unused strings for attack names taking the form of "a NORMAL move", one for each type including ???. As far as I can understand, they show up when an invalid move with a valid type is used, though it sounds like it's more complicated than that. Yamiidenryuu (talk) 14:30, 7 January 2015 (EST)

Wild Double battles

Bulbapedia has this section, saying that Wild Double Battles were planned, based on a text string: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_Ruby_and_Sapphire_beta#Battles I was actually the one to initially add that information, as I found the string by accident using Advance-Text. It also exists in Emerald, albeit with weird placeholders ("Wild [RIVAL] and [TEAM1] appeared!"), but I suspect this quirk is something to do with A-Text itself since the [RIVAL] placeholder also shows up in the regular "Wild _ appeared!" string. Anyway, I would like to add this information to the article, but I'm not sure where it should go. Frezgle (talk) 17:16, 24 February 2015 (EST)

Unused wild pokemon victory theme is actually used

The article invalidly states that the wild pokemon battle victory theme without the intro is unused, but it is in-fact used in-game. It is played only if you catch a wild pokemon, if you just defeat it the regular "used" theme plays. This can be confirmed by both gameplay and pokeruby disassembly(particularly the text strings for a wild pokemon being caught calling this theme to be played. They're located in \src\data\battle_strings_en.h on lines 750 and 751). This is also true for Emerald. --TheFearsomeDzeraora (talk) 07:06, 27 August 2019 (EDT)

More unused text strings?

These strings are right before those for "coolness", "beauty", "cuteness", "smartness", and "toughness", but I'm not sure if they're actually used anywhere in Contests.

These appear to be in-battle messages, but idk the context; are any of them used? The "hustle" one appears to be referring to the use of an item, given the string type referenced.

I don't think the hustle one is used, as I can't think of any item that has an effect associated with the word "hustle". I don't think the "stopped working" lines are used, unless they are used when Safeguard, Reflect, or Light Screen ends. --NOBODY (talk) 22:48, 23 January 2022 (UTC)


Just remembered another possibly-unused one: the move description for Struggle:
Used only if all PP are gone.
Also hurts the user a little.

There is no POKéMON.

Just to avoid confusion I just tested and you can get the message in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald too. For 'Mandela effect' reasons it seems like I forgot or ignored the player's PC having a Potion in the Hoenn games as well. So it seems like (at least in the English versions as I didn't test the Japanese versions and the equivalents) this was never unused in any Generation III core games. Based on tests of the No-Intro ROMs of Pocket Monsters Ruby, Pocket Monsters Ruby (Rev 1), Pocket Monsters Ruby (Pokemon Box), Pocket Monsters FireRed, Pocket Monsters FireRed (Rev 1) in the Japanese versions, the same is true and equivalent message isn't unused either (ポケモンが いませんよ!). I did notice one curiosity though. In FireRed/LeafGreen, you can't exit this menu with B (nothing happens) while in Ruby/Sapphire you could. I don't know whether this was intended (for whatever reason) or is an oversight. Torchickens (talk) 19:58, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
Also you can't exit the menu with B in Pokémon Emerald either (Japanese and English versions). I also tested the Spanish version of Emerald just for the sake of it, and again the menu can't be closed with B. Torchickens (talk) 20:05, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

why was gen 3 not translated to korean? were there plans to do so?

why was gen 3 not translated to korean? the language defines skip 6 which a theory states it might have been meant for korean?

(Worth mentioning): According to Bulbapedia (citing this page), Daewon C.I. did release it as 포켓몬스터 루비·사파이어, but they only translated the back cover and manual. Furthermore Hyundai did not license their own version of the Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance. Also, after a cursory Google search, there is cover art that appears more like a front cover; why is this? EvieMelody (talk) 14:15, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
I know this, but it doesn't sit right with me. they released gsc in s-korea, which were gbc-exclusive (for anyone wondering, they made g&s gbc-only in s-korea), but if they didn't license a gbc, how, if at all, were those played? Lunathedog (talk) 19:03, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
Exactly, Geum/Eun were Game Paks also (playable on Game Boy Color). I see the inconsistency there. Also, according to this tweet by SnorlaxMonster; "In Gen 4 onward, Korean uses ID 8. If 6 had been reserved for Korean, it likely would have used it when it was added. The most convincing guess I've heard is that ID 6 was for Portuguese (which was scrapped and never used)." Additionally, there are versions of Gold/Silver released in Brazil/South America called "Pokémon Versão Gold e Versão Silver" (I have one of these Game Paks); but the ROMs are in English and the same as the US release.
