Gather 8 Mangy Wolf Pelts

Alright. I honestly have absolutely no idea how I stumbled on to this in the first place. As you can see in this video I made, the level somehow takes so long to load that the intro of the Academy stage bugs out. I never see the iris-in, SAIL never tells me to wake up, and of course, I get to see that [:File:StarboundPC-v122 DefaultQuest.png|lovely, glitched quest interface].

I think this requires more research. I'm genuinely curious if there's more to this "temporary quest" than just a single text string and, moreover, I'd love to find out if there's a way to get it during normal gameplay.

And yes, I did the research. Google turns up total bupkis as far as "mangy wolf," much less just plain ol' "wolf," so I'm reasonably sure this isn't a normal quest. The lack of a hyphen before the quest objective and the similarity to World of Warcraft starting quests ("Collect 8 of X") seems too much of a coincidence... to be a coincidence.

i couldn't find anything related to that in the assets, and nothing comes up when i searched the quest in chucklefish forums either. which is sad because i'm interested in what this even is too. could this be caused by mods? --Mashabely (talk) 08:15, 24 July 2017 (EDT)
I tried to get hold of Chucklefish through Twitter about it but they didn't bite. Guess they were busy...
Anyway, if it's any help in the slightest, this happened back in v1.2.2 of the game. I mean, it doesn't happen that I could only ever get it to do it once and only once... but, man, it was pretty fortunate that I was recording it. And, no, I didn't have any mods running, at the time. My "first look" video was recorded on a completely fresh install using a computer that, admittedly, has a hard time with loading screens. (My desktop's pretty old...) It's incredibly strange that you couldn't find anything about it in the game's assets, though. I'd think there would be a string... or, a placeholder graphic of some sort. I mean, if it came up once, it should be in the game somewhere. Right?

the placeholder image part made me look around in the interface folder, and i actually found it in interface/questtracker/questtracker.config! in "lblQuestObjectiveList", the value is "Gather 8 Mangy Wolf Pelts". i dont know what does it mean, but at least i found it. --Mashabely (talk) 12:04, 17 August 2017 (EDT)
Oh, my gosh! You have no idea how happy I am to hear (read) that! I mean, I knew I wasn't crazy... I had video proof, after all! But, the fact that it actually is in there, somewhere, is great!. Heh heh.
As for what it means? Like I said, it's most likely just a placeholder or "error handler" quest for very rare occasions of the interface not initializing properly while a quest is being tracked -- as happened in that video of mine. I would love to find a way to trigger it manually, if only to get a proper screenshot. But, I mean, since it's not really supposed to display under most circumstances... I dunno.
But, yes. Thank you so much for looking into this! I'm super-glad you found something!

some unused stuff

ive run around the assets just documenting some stuff, might need to test if actually unused:

  • in the ai folder before 1.0 update theres an image titled mockaidialogue. its just a screenshot of the game between the novakids' addition and the font update
  • ai folder, already 1.0, also contains old ai images but not the ones of novakids for some reason
  • the kill 10 poptops achievenent doesnt work so its unused
  • in tech/distortionsphere, oldbasic and waterball are unused
  • items/generic/crafting, some unused images and items: alienweirdwood, alienwoodsap, ancientbones, artificial brain, basicpelt, biosample2, bolt, brain, bugshell, cellmateria, cog, dragonbone(looks like sharpened claw), endomorphicjelly, fossilore, glasscoffeemug, gnome, hinge, holidayspirit, icecrystal, inferiorbrain, laserdiode, lead, lightbulb3, matteritem, moltencore(no relation to scorched core), monsterplating, moonstoreore, plutoniumrod, polymer, prisilite star, processor, robotarms, robotchest, robothead, robotlegs, screws, seaweed, sulphur, thread, toxicwaste, triangliumore, uraniumore, uraniumrod, wildvines
  • everything in items/generic/tradingcards, items/generic/trophies, items/generic/unlock, celestial/sector folders is unused
  • a few unused hurt sounds for all races are in sfx/humanoid folder, along with some others
  • everything removed in 1.0 should be noted too
