Japanese version

Someone should really check it out. I heard there's a menu option in the Japanese version where Toad gives you hints on the game... it's not on TMK but someone described it on GameFAQs. I probably lost it by now. -- Prince Kassad 17:56, 26 July 2010 (EDT)

Other dummied attacks

There are two other dummied attacks that aren't mentioned anywhere else, as far as I know. One is Royal Flush, a version of the card-based attacks with a unique graphic effect. The other is Sickle, which is a version of Scythe and Deathsickle that causes Scarecrow. --Kahran042 23:55, 20 September 2010 (EDT)

Aren't they both used? -- Prince Kassad 01:19, 21 September 2010 (EDT)
No, they aren't, at least according to the enemy AI scripts. --Kahran042 10:30, 26 September 2010 (EDT)
The comments in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HLXzhmJmcQ claim otherwise. JorphoXL 00:52, 23 August 2011 (EDT)

Unused enemy animations

Every enemy has animations for the basic actions in battle, but not all of them use all of them, sometimes being later used by a recolor. I know Smithy's true head has a full set of animations, and one of the chest fake enemies has an animation revealing that he is an Ameboid, which I don't remember being used. Would someone want to look into this? --Peardian 11:57, 25 September 2010 (EDT)

I guess Muckle's physical attack falls under this, too. He uses only special attacks and, to my knowledge, does not have any palette swaps. It would be helpful to have someone look through all the animations, but there's an awful lot of them. -- Prince Kassad 15:08, 25 September 2010 (EDT)

Not-really-unused hidden scene

Thought I'd mention this. There's a pipe in Kero Sewers on a platform that's too high to jump to. A pipe in Land's End leads to that pipe, allowing you to reach a treasure chest. It's not supposed to be possible to reach the pipe from the sewers, but you can by jumping off a ghost after fleeing from it.

If you do go through the pipe early in the game, you're treated to some hidden dialogue, where an enemy helpfully informs you that you can't continue that way. Probably hardly anyone ever sees this, and I don't think being able to jump off the ghosts was intentional (it enables some rather large shortcuts), but whether to call it unused... 00:52, 5 March 2012 (EST)

In case you haven't noticed, we cover more than just unused stuff here. I think it'd be worth adding to the article, as an interesting oddity. --BMF54123 01:34, 5 March 2012 (EST)
It's worth pointing out that the chest also contains a Frog Coin if accessed that way, rather than the usual Cricket Jam. (Which is still possible to get if you go through the pipe the normal way, by the way. So you don't lose out on it.) -YK YK-sig.png 01:40, 5 March 2012 (EST)
It seems more like a case of "the developers thought of everything". Being able to jump off of enemies is an intentional feature, so it was probably left in as a reward for clever players. --Peardian 11:38, 7 March 2012 (EST)

Secrets

http://smrpgsecrets.tripod.com/

This is an older website whose author dug inside the game. There's a few unique observations and listings he's made (for example, the sprite animations and unused text). LinkTheLefty 23:05, 18 May 2012 (EDT)

Unused graphics?

SMRPGCutFour.png

This was added to the page recently, without any sort of description. What are they, and can we please get split GIF/PNG versions of them? --BMF54123 23:34, 20 May 2012 (EDT)

The second one may have been intended for Belome Temple. No idea about the others. --Kahran042 (talk) 11:57, 25 April 2015 (EDT)
These are definitely unused. It took some doing but I found where they are located. I'm going to add them to the article now. --Yakibomb (talk) 08:55, 24 June 2017 (EDT)

Trophy stands used in early screenshots

I don't see how these are the same as the early screenshot stands. The ones in the scans appear to have a more pronounced heart designed on them, and also their surface is not dark/black but light. In contrast, the stand found unused in the game has a darker top that doesn't match, and it doesn't have as obvious (any?) heart design on the side.

I see the similarities, but I don't see the one-and-the-same this entry suggests. I suggest the entry be reworded for a more speculative approach rather than a die-hard establishment of the graphic as being remnants of the scan's development period.--Celice 02:56, 20 November 2012 (EST)

Unfinished Enemy

Are there any cannon-based enemies in the game? At first the animation and shape reminded me of some sort of cashier thing, with a LCD face that animates/goes haywire. Maybe like a safe?

But then it seemed more likely, contextually, that this could be a cannon that launched a separate bullet-bill sprite. The animation where many tiles cycle through could be the prepping/spinning of the cannon chamber, and the two side-tiles seem to function as the "legs" of the cannons would that exist in the Mario universe.

Man, I love when stuff like this is uncovered. TCRF is a great resource.--Celice 03:04, 20 November 2012 (EST)

Contrary to belief, this was actually a cactus enemy, not a bullet-bill enemy. It was speculated that was replaced by the Artichoker. Source: https://jul.rustedlogic.net/thread.php?id=18144 --Yakibomb (talk) 08:48, 24 June 2017 (EDT)

"Mario's Factory"

Can somebody explain this: http://themushroomkingdom.net/mailbag_040704.shtml (search the page for "Mario's Factory")--Hiccup (talk) 07:27, 25 January 2014 (EST)

Well so far no one has found anything about this "Mario's Factory" in the ROM. There have been thousands of rumors about it though, including an incredibly big one on GameFAQs where someone claims to remember renting a version of the game which had Mario's Factory as an accessible location on the world map (apparently being the same as the regular factory, except you could walk on the conveyor belt and fight the Drill Bits). As with all rumors, no one was ever able to prove it, and I don't think there's any truth to it. -- Sheeza (talk) 08:37, 26 January 2014 (EST)

More unused enemies?

I think there's a few more unused enemies. Here's the ones I found in Lazy Shell:

  • -An unnamed copy of Corkpedite.
  • -A copy of Corkpedite's body named "Grit"
  • -An unnamed blue recolor of Boomer. Is this enemy used?
  • -Aero actually has an "enemy" version of him, who's ID is right after the ID for Bowyer.
  • -A Thwomp.
  • -A small bird. (?)
  • -Some small sparkles. (Again, ?)
  • -An enemy that uses a strange sprite of Exor's mouth. (Still ?)
  • -An unnamed enemy that looks like part of Bundt. (So much ?)
  • -3 unnamed enemies that use the "Dummy" sprite.

--Sandwichface (talk) 11:27, 1 June 2014 (EDT)

Not really unused

The message "Bowser's mood has affected the monster! The monster's confused!" appears if Bowser isn't in your active party. When it appears, the monsters that would run if Bowser were in your active party will indeed be confused. --Kahran042 (talk) 21:45, 5 August 2016 (EDT)

Animation Index For Unfinished Enemy?

I believe it was Mattrizzle who found the unfinished enemy animation, but he never specified what index it could be found in LazyShell. Does anyone know? Thanks. --Yakibomb (talk) 09:38, 24 June 2017 (EDT)

Info has been edited into the article! Thanks Mattrizzle! For those looking it's 30 or 48 for those using LazyShell. --Yakibomb (talk) 14:29, 25 June 2017 (EDT)

Unused Enemies Subpage?

Should the unused enemies become its own subpage? The list is kind of long so it might be worth it. --Yakibomb (talk) 09:59, 24 June 2017 (EDT)

Question

Do the unused enemies exist in the Japanese version of the game, and if so, do they have different names? Binarystep (talk) 03:44, 28 June 2017 (EDT)

I can confirm they do, at least for the most part. Some of them even make more sense. They are as follows...
  • Baba Yaga is named Pot (ポット), which doesn’t seem to align with Fautso (モックン, Mokkun). His Psychopath is 「あたまのクルクルかわいいっしょ? いいっしょ?」
  • Merlin is Kamek (カメック), which is odd because the game’s Magikoopa is known as Kamezard (カメザード), or Kamek Wizard. Maybe they planned to keep the name the same at one point?
  • Juju is Graver (グレイバー), which is similar to Reacher (グレイビー, Gravey). Its Psychopath is 「この間、ハイイヌに さこつ取られた‥‥シクシク。」 (crying at the end).
  • Lumbler is Cool Fungah (クールフンガー), obviously meant to be an icy version of Stumpet (フンガー, Fungah). Not tree-related as the English names indicate, they’re more like volcanic octopi-like monsters. Its Psychopath is 「フンガー! ンガー! ンンンガー! ガーー!」 (less a simple growl and more like it’s threatening to blow).
  • Harlequin is Sting (スティング), notably different from Jester (ダウト, Doubt) and unrelated to the bee enemies which don’t have generic names in Japanese. His Psychopath is 「ケケケケケケケケケケッケケケケケケッケケケケK」 (is it meant to be a laugh or just a placeholder?).
  • Radish is the same (ラディッシュ). It still doesn’t quite match Carroboscis (キャロライン, Caroline), so they probably didn’t think of a real pun before removing it.
  • Crippo is Hippopo Super (ヒッポポスーパー). In the final game, Hippopo just appears at an area near the end, so Hippopo was probably given the stats meant for this enemy.
  • Mastablasta is Jura Mamzo (ジュラマンゾー), probably short for Jurassic Mammoth Zombie, with Mastadoom called Mamzo (マンゾー). No Blaster Master reference here. Its Psychopath is 「生きるって、つらい事だよなぁ~~。」
  • Pile Driver is Jidatander (ジダタンダー), which is based on Corkpedite (ジタンダ, Jitanda). Its body is also unnamed, but has a Psychopath of 「‥‥‥。」
  • Super Spike is Spike Soldier Super (トゲへいスーパー), based on Spikey (トゲへい, Togehei).
  • The outlier is Chandeli-ho/Hangin’ Shy, which is surprisingly unnamed in battle in the Japanese version, but nonetheless has a Psychopath of 「ツライ、、コレデジキュウ2コイン、、ヤリキレナイ。」 (which is actually different from the three Snifits’). No idea why a westernized name is here of all places.
  • Thrax is Queen Flower (クィーンフラワー), which is identical to Megasmilax. It’s not called a stem. Maybe if you were somehow fast enough, you were meant to possibly one-shot the plant boss before it grew buds like in Yoshi's Island?
  • Drill Bit is Tsuttsun (ツッツン), which is similar to Jabit (ツッツクン, Tsuttsukun). It still appears as an unfought cameo in the final game, and it has the Psychopath 「ヤリドヴィッヒさまのカタキ! オカクゴ!」 (to my knowledge, no one refers to Yaridovich with sama in the final game, although the one arrow flunky addresses Bowyer this way).
  • Aero is Arrown (アーロン), reflecting its regional name difference as shown in one of text boxes.
  • From what I can tell, the rest are blank except for the extra duplicate versions of Booster (ブッキー) and Croco (クロコ). The fact that a number of these (plus Hippopo) have a similar blueish color scheme may be evidence of an area dropped from the game. On Psychopaths, Shy Ranger’s is technically unused since Mallow and Bowser can’t have high enough speed to touch it without hacking, I’m pretty sure.

Side note: the removed debug menu text is still in the Japanese version - it’s basically what you’d expect, but one of the options that doesn’t seem to do anything anymore has an odd label (クロコ面OBJ無). The same goes for the unused Chancellor and Smithy dialog as well as those Terrapin, Bowser, and Hammer Bro Psychopaths - I can see if I can add it if requested. LinkTheLefty (talk) 14:10, 28 June 2017 (EDT)

I believe that Baba Yaga being Pot in the Japanese version is meant to refer to his Pot belly. In addition, on Super Spike's Japanese name that you gave, (トゲへいスーパー) directly translates to Togehei Super. I must ask why you have put "Spike Solder Super" rather than "Spike Super"? --Yakibomb (talk) 23:52, 16 July 2017 (EDT)
Ah, I answered my own question. Togehei is just Spike Soldier, while Spikey was the English variation.--Yakibomb (talk) 23:56, 16 July 2017 (EDT)
Great info! I went through the trouble of trying to find it myself, and it turns out all of the information was already here all along. I think this information is worth having on the page. --Peardian (talk) 01:56, 16 April 2019 (EDT)

Unused Shy Guy?

Hey, using yychr, I found these graphics right under Bowser's Chandelier graphics (at 01C000 in yychr):

SMRPG unused shy guy @ 01C000.png

Sorry, I couldn't find the right palette. Are these unused? --Yakibomb (talk) 19:09, 16 July 2017 (EDT)

Should this go in the "Related Games" section of the Final Fantasy series?

The party system (3 at a time, lead cannot be removed, change party at any time) could be seen as a precursor to FF7's, and Culex exists. --Fuck Milk -Maggie 18:59, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

Probably not. SMRPG does contain a couple of small references to FF and both were developed by Square, but those are really the only connections between the two. --Жукороп (talk) 19:28, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

Should we make a page for the Nintendo Switch remake?

We should at least mention changes between the original and the remake. -- FanOfRosalina2007 (talk) 23:51, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

Pages are only created if there's unused/debug content, as usual. Comparisons between the games are not covered here, but you can add it to the talk page if you want once the page is created. ReyVGM (talk) 04:06, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Yes absolutely, just make sure you've found some content for the page first. If not, start a sandbox on your user page and go from there. Don't think that changes between a game remake and the original is really covered on this wiki. --Mantis (talk) 00:25, 18 January 2024 (UTC)
Okay, I might. I'm actually surprised no one has found any unused content for the remake. I am taking a break from being highly active here (see my userpage for why, if you're wondering) but I may start a sandbox at some point. I own the game, so that should make it easy. Thanks! -- FanOfRosalina2007 (talk) 02:54, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
