Start Button Eggs are possibly CPU meter

I'm not sure if I have the same source codes you have, but I'm pretty sure that the eggs shown by Start button is CPU meter (StarTropics had something similar)

From the Readme.txt:

- Measurement of Yoshi Game CPU Processing Time
By defining SPEED_CHK at yos_game.h, an egg is displayed on the screen when START button
is pressed. X Coordinate, which lies in the center of the egg (the left edge of the screen
is zero), indicates the number of lines for raster position when game process is completed.
The maximum is about 100. Location of measurement can be altered by changing the insert
location for the row of p1_line_count = ... in game_main().

Does your yoshi.bin have sound?
Just checked yoshi.bin in the source folder... no, it's silent. I do own the sound-enabled ROM separately from it though. The source code I own is here. Purplebridge001 (talk) 10:22, 26 October 2013 (EDT)
Where did you get the no-sound version source? And do you happen to know where I can get GBA sdks other than version 3.0 ? --Hiccup (talk) 15:36, 27 October 2013 (EDT)
I got it from Video Game Source Code Repository some years ago. It's listed as "Yoshi's Island" under GBA section. I don't own any GBA SDKs. Purplebridge001 (talk) 04:56, 8 November 2013 (EST)
