Tengai Makyou: Ziria (TurboGrafx-CD)/Unused Maps
This is a sub-page of Tengai Makyou: Ziria (TurboGrafx-CD).
In Tengai Makyou: Ziria, every map is a mostly self-contained entity with its own graphics, text, layout data, and so on. Due to the final version of the game basically being built on top of the ruins of an abandoned earlier version, an extremely large number of old, disused maps can be found scattered all across the game disc, often with all their data intact and seemingly untouched from the previous era of development.
Emphasis on "extremely large number"...Including the debug room shown on the main page, there are 109 (near-)complete unused maps and 47 unused map fragments, making for a total of 156 or so unused maps out of the 725 on the disc – over 20% of the total!

Full Maps
These maps exist in complete or mostly-complete form and are generally somewhat playable, though a few of them lack map structure data and can't be loaded. However, because most of these come from an earlier and much different version of the game, they suffer from several issues that mean they can't really be played as intended without further hacking:
- The way random encounters work seems to have been completely overhauled at some point without updating the encounter data in the old maps. Because of this, almost all unused maps have random encounters enabled (even houses and other places that obviously weren't meant to have them), and those encounters are based on garbage data. Walking around these areas without turning off random encounters will result in nonsensical groups of enemies popping up at best, but more likely will just freeze or crash the game.
- Older versions of the game didn't use a full-screen display, instead constraining the view to a small window. This matters because the game doesn't let the player move to any position that would put any part of the camera outside the map boundaries, even if it's otherwise accessible. The older game's smaller field of view meant that it was possible to get closer to the edges of the map, and many maps were laid out with those boundaries in mind. As a result, some unused maps place paths and NPCs too close to the upper- and left-most parts of the map, making them inaccessible in the finished game's engine.
- The parameters for some scripting commands seem to have been changed during development. As a result, most unused maps will crash the game or at least print garbage text when attemping to load cutscenes or NPC portraits.
- Due to maps being moved or overwritten during development, many of the exits on old maps now lead to obviously wrong locations.
These maps can be accessed in a debugging emulator by setting an execution breakpoint on $9969 and triggering a map change (in most cases, going to a building interior yields the best results). When the breakpoint triggers, set memory $3095-3097 to the target map's sector number in little-endian order. For most maps, the party's starting X/Y position can be set at this time by modifying $2059 and $205A, respectively. After the map loads, set $309C to a nonzero value to disable random encounters, or the game will most likely crash after a few steps. Due to the incomplete state of many maps, it's also a good idea to set $95BA to 0x10 to make it possible to walk through walls.
To do: Some text is missing because the tools used to dump it were designed to work with the final game, and some text commands were apparently altered during development such that they're no longer compatible with the finished product. In particular, maps that are noted as trying to trigger cutscenes are likely to have more text that may shed some light on the events that were supposed to be there. |

Namazu Shrine (map 0x181B)
This is the start of an early version of the Namazu Shrine sequence near the start of the game. It seems the original plot involved Hoteimaru being kidnapped and replaced by a tanuki impostor, who then lured Ziria into a trap.
The final game's scenario is similar, but instead has the tanuki posing as the fictional Fire Hero "Kinta," with the goal of the quest changed from rescuing Hoteimaru to obtaining the Big Tweezers. Hoteimaru isn't even introduced into the story until much later.
Proto | Final |
---|---|
The map itself has an identical layout to the final, but uses an older and less polished graphics set.
Note the change to the Daimonists' 大 logo on the rock: older maps consistenly depict it with a more distorted shape that makes it somewhat resemble a handwritten 火. This design also appears on various enemy sprites, suggesting that the design was changed during development but not all existing instances were updated.

The next set of maps forms the Snake Spring Cave, which ultimately became the Snake Hermit Cave. Aside from the general concept of being a short dungeon with water in it, it bears little resemblance to the final.

Taga (map 0x2B33)
This presents an older version of Taga with a slightly different plot: it's been attacked and presumably occupied by King Akurou, with the people urging the player to defeat him. This was changed for the final so that Akurou is instead a beloved king who brought peace between oni and humans, but has recently joined the Daimonists, upsetting the people (with it later being revealed that his hand was forced due to his son being kidnapped).
It's unclear if Akurou was actually intended to be a villain, like his "real-life" (legendary) counterpart, or if this is just a different framing of the same underlying scenario.

These lines belong to the poet Basho, who per early magazine coverage was intended to appear as a prominent character in the game, but was entirely cut from the final. He appears as an NPC with a unique sprite on the eastern edge of the town, but talking to him freezes the game as it tries to start a cutscene, so these lines can't actually be viewed. |

This is an older and very obviously unfinished version of Rikuu, the third continent, which has different graphics and is full of silly placeholder dialogue. Notably, it seems to be the only prototype "overworld" area left in the game.
The overall layout is essentially the same, though the trees that guide the player to the correct path over the bridges are absent.
Once again, the 大 logo of the Daimonists can be seen with its older, more distorted shape.

Thief Village (map 0x2B87)
The "Thief Villages" are early versions of what became the Kumogiri Hamlets in the final game. Though their name and layout is different, they seem to have served the same purpose of being basic "rest stops" along the road.

Thief Inn (map 0x2BA3)
Earlier versions of the game very heavily emphasized Ziria's role as a thief: stealing from shops was a prominent mechanic, and the player was supported by a nationwide network of Thief Villages. Similarly, there were also special Thief Inns (probably found mostly in Thief Villages) which at one point were the only place where it was possible to save the game. Thankfully, this was extended to regular inns as well for the final.

Basho here mashes up two of his famous haiku:
荒海や佐渡に横とう天の川 The rough seas -- stretching toward Sado Isle, the Milky Way. 古池や蛙飛びこむ水の音 The old pond -- a frog jumps in, sound of the water. Ziria is associated with frogs (well, toads), making this at least somewhat situationally appropriate. |

Yoshiwara N.1 (map 0x4B05)
The next several maps are for a set of brothels that would have been found in Yoshiwara. The scenario here apparently involved Tsukihime being kidnapped by Kiyomasa, the Minister of the Left, and held captive in one of the buildings.
In the final game, Tsukihime was basically removed from the story; she appears in Edo at the end of the game, but plays no role in the plot, and talking to her isn't even required.

Kawagoe (map 0x4C1D)
In the final game, Kawagoe appears as a ghost town as a result of a failed assault on Edo, but it was apparently meant to be a full-fledged area. This map bears little resemblance to the final's.
As described in early previews of the game, stealing was originally intended to be a major game mechanic, and it seems to be fully functional here! Entering either the 木 or 舟 buildings will activate the stealing minigame, with (paltry) rewards given on successful completion.
In the final game, the stealing minigame was relegated solely to "practice areas" in some Kumogiri Hamlets, with rewards so miniscule one has to wonder why they even bothered keeping it around.

Partial Maps
This needs some investigation. Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page. Specifically: There seem to be more maps, possibly in a different format or with too much missing graphics data to display properly; they're probably worth looking into at some point |
Beginning at disc sector 0xCB8E are various maps in an odd format. They seem to have no script data and incomplete graphics data, but otherwise are more or less in the same format as the final, and in most cases are an exact match to the final maps aside from the parts that are missing. At least one, however, is unused and not found anywhere else on the disc.
Partial Map 0x178F
Proto | Final |
---|---|
This is a rough draft of the Yonezawa Castle dungeon. Aside from lacking any kind of detail work, it matches the final layout. The only actual difference is that the right side of the second floor erroneously duplicates part of the layout immediately to the left of it instead of being blank, which was obviously fixed for the final.
The finished version of the dungeon is actually split up into two separate maps rather than combining both floors into a single one like this. The two final maps have been merged here for ease of comparison.
Script-Only Fragments
Some parts of the disc contain only the first sector or two of data for old maps. Exactly why this is the case isn't clear, but since the data seems to consist of the map's full text block, these partial maps give us some further peeks at early concepts for the game.
