Proto:Star Fox 2/April 15, 1994 Build

Gameplay Differences

  • The control scheme is the same as the first Star Fox and cannot be changed.
  • Bombs are fired in a torpedo-like fashion. With the Walker, they immediately explode on the ground unless it is midair.
  • The Walker is unbearably slow at this point. Even when holding Y to run, it isn't much faster.

First-Person Mode

A first-person mode can be toggled during gameplay by pressing L + R + Y. It works fine with the regular Arwing and UFO mode, but the camera with the walker is incomplete.

With the Walker, the camera will dip inside of it, and the aiming reticle can become displaced. When aiming around with the X button held, the screen becomes mostly obscured by the Walker.

The aiming reticle will remain on-screen after disabling first-person mode, but will not move around again until re-enabling it.

Mission Stages

STG1-GROUND

This stage is mostly empty, though some platforms with flashing bases are scattered around.

After defeating three waves of ostrich-like enemies, the Space Hammer boss will appear.

STG2-DESERT

The targets in this stage are tall, separated towers.

After destroying the towers, the Mirage Dragon boss will spawn.

STG3-MAGMA

The same background and ground plane as STG1-GROUND are used in this stage.

There's only one enemy here, and defeating it will spawn Space Hammer.

Lots of ramps can be found throughout the map; some of which move on their own!

STG4-PARK

The same background and ground plane as STG1-GROUND is used...again.

Seven enemies are spread throughout the map alongside different structures. Space Hammer is the boss of this stage.

STG5-SUN

This stage allows you to transform the Arwing into the scrapped UFO form, and uses an early rendition of Macbeth's music from the final version.

The Arwing is able to pass right through the carriers, and even though they are the targets, they can't always be damaged.

If you can manage to defeat enough carriers, Mirage Dragon will appear.

STG6-SEA

This stage has rings you can fly through, and you can go underwater by transforming into the Walker. The music is an earlier version of Fortuna's from the final game.

The underwater camera is pretty wonky at this point and only looks proper when you're on the seafloor. If you try swimming upward, the camera will point towards the Walker, but won't follow it. It's easy to tell that the underwater gameplay is still a work in progress.

There are some enemies above the water, and carriers underwater. The carriers on this map actually have collision, and the Walker can stand on top of them!

EXT1-SENKAN

The three EXT stages all take place in space, use the same music as STG5-SUN, and allow the Arwing to transform into UFO mode.

SENKAN (戦艦) means battleship in Japanese, referring to the large amount of carriers on the map

Alongside the carriers are some propeller enemies and rings you can fly through. This stage is prone to crashing whenever shots are fired at an enemy, but is usually okay if you take your time shooting them down in the UFO mode.

If you can manage to defeat all the enemies before the game crashes, Mirage Dragon will appear.

EXT2-ASTEROID

This stage has "asteroids" in the form of cubes placed around the map.
