Hello world


Sonic 3 1103 vs final version AIZ map comparison slices:

Act 1

A floating platform was added above the first palmtree making it easeir to reach the small bonus alcove.

Also in the 1103 prototype the monitor subtypes are not set which results in the player getting hurt when breaking them.

In the final version a ceiling was added to the entire area.

A big column of path swappers was added to reset the collision plane when starting the level.

The final version adds 3 rings and a small alcove with a super ring monitor.

A floating platform added in the final hinting that something is up there...

And a ceiling.

In the 1103 prototype, Tails will come down to pick sonic in this area and carry him to the upper right ledge.

In the final version Rhinobot was moved more to the right.

3 Additional rings were removed from the final at this location.

Some aesthetic layout changes between the versions.

A palmtree with a Monkeydude got cut the Rhinobot has been moved to the right.

The unset hidden monitor on top of the palmtree got changed to a fire shield.

A pair of spikes was also added in the final version just before the sliding rope ride.

The floor changed slightly, the final version adds a second backwards spring, maybe to increase the player's chance of finding the secret area with the special stage ring.

The foreground plants' position was adjusted slightly.

The monitor has been changed to an invincibility one, perhaps a robotnik monitor in the first level was a bit out of place.

Some rock sprites were added in the final version to make the area not feel so empty.

The rope position was slightly adjusted to the right.

A Toulipon got added in the final version.

A group of spikes got changed to a harmless rock sprite and the sneaky Rhinobot got deleted.

In the loop exit the path swapper range got extended all the way to the celing to not break collision if the player misses by going over it.

Just under the ledge, the underwater monitor got changed from a 1-Up to a Water shield in the final.

The floor was lowered to make room for a palmtree with a Monkeydude.

The Rhinobot got removed.

The secret area underwater entrance got filled with goodies and a seemingly useless path swapper, perhaps it was meant for a special stage ring.

The spring buried under the rock sprite got moved to the right in the final version.

A small floatind island was added to accomodate a starpost with a cluster of rings above it.

The palmtree and the Monkeydude from the prototype got removed to make room for an additional loop on the way to the giant tree trunk.

The second loop used to have a 1-Up monitor on its roof in the prototype, it got replaced by a super ring monitor in the final and got moved to the left to become slightly hidden by the leaves.

The final version adds more path swappers to prevent tails from being on the wrong collision layer when skipping the loop by flying.

The giant trunk 1-Up monitor's position was adjusted slightly.



Act 1.5

The ledge with the starpost and the upper wall was moved 128 pixels to the left, making the yellow sky transition area shorter.

The cavern under the starting area with the special stage ring got moved 128 pixels to the right.

In the proto the cavern is much smaller than in the final, which also adds ruings and a means to reach the area below.

The giant waterfall starts much sooner. It's also filled with falling logs, which got removed in the final version.

A ceiling was added to the top of the waterfall and a small alcove was created with a super ring monitor in the final.

The entrance to the special stage room was made less obvious and the path became hazard-free in the final version.

Most of the lake that used to exist in the proto in this area was turned into earth and its objects were removed.

A log bridge with 4 rings are missing in the prototype.

A collapsing platform was added to the left side, making it easier to avoid falling into the water in the final.

The floor between waterfalls changed between the proto and the final, the version in the proto looks more consistent.

The log bridge turned into a colapsing platform and an extension of solid ground.

The ground between waterfalls was extended on the bottom side in the final version.

An island with a Toulipon and a few objects weres added in the middle of the waterfall to make crossing it easier in the final version.

The underwater cavern used to be just a simple tunel in the prototype.

A loop was added in the final version with a thunder shield monitor hidden on top of it.

Some spikes got added in the final version to prevent Knuckles from climbing into Sonic's boss area.

A helpful fire shield monitor was added in the alcove to the left guarded by a Toulipon in the final version.

In the final version, a super ring monitor was also added on the bottom.

The miniboss area for Sonic got a ceiling added in the final version (much like the rest of the level did).


Act 2

In the final version, the tunnel at the beginning of act 2 got more bends and lost 3 rings.

At the tunnel exit, Sonic falls into the the water in the proto, while the final drains most of it, the only underwter part is a small pond with 3 rings.

This is the location in the final where the level starts when entering from level select or if Sonic dies before reaching any starpost after the miniboss.

In the proto the pond below the waterfall was a contunuation from the previous area, the waterfall was also a bit wider.

The collapsing platform in the proto turned into a log bridge ad 2 rings were added in the final.

The monitor behind the vegetation changed into a water shield from a 1-Up originally.

The waterfall got a ceiling and a small alcove was created with a 1-Up monitor and Toulipon that got moved from the pond up here.

A falling log spawner was added to let Sonic reach this area.

The upper path terrain got changed, the rings were removed and the Rhinobot got closer to the edge.

A swinging rope was added on the left and a pair of collapsing platforms were added on both sides in the final.

A small floating islet with an unclear purpose was added in the final version.

The terrain got changed slightly in the path below.

More terrain changes, but overall the same concept.

The way the path splits got changed, the lower one exits into a spin tunnel, while the upper one is reachable via a floating platform in the final version.

The upper path adds a secret room to the left containing a thunder shield monitor.

The spikes on the ledge got removed and a swinging rope was added for better accessability.

The upper path got a bit more perilous in the final version with a Rhinobot and a spike pit added to this area while the rings got removed.

The waterfall became shortened to half of its original width in the proto.

A second dedicated room containing the switch draining the water and opening the upper passage was added in the final, in the proto the upper passage was always open.

To the left an empty alcove in the proto got moved to be above the waterfall and populated with a fire shield and a Toulipon.

A ceiling was and a cluster of 12 rings were added t this area in the upper path.

A small floating islet, a rope and a floating platform were added to make it easier reaching the ledge on the left.

The upper portion got covered with a celing in the final version.

In the final, a ceiling as added and the alcove has been opened on the right side as well.
