This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.
Hmmm...
To do:
Since this game never saw the light of day, and there are no ROM images of this prototype on the Internet, this probably either shouldn't exist or should be merged with the SimCity (SNES) page. Until then, this is just a page for research.
Hmmm...
To do:
Add images.

This horrendously-cheesy video video from the Consumer Electronics Show features the prototype and may have some info worth adding.

According to a 1990 November/December issue of Nintendo Power magazine, Nintendo's SimCity was originally to be released on the SNES as well as the NES, although the latter was never released.

"Another of the games we hinted at last issue is the NES version of the home computer mega-hit SimCity, scheduled for Spring release. This city-building simulator is an engrossing strategy game that requires planning and brain power rather than quick reflexes to win. As the mayor of a growing city, you'll try to keep your citizens happy by zoning your city in a productive fashion. You also might find yourself rebuilding after a crunching disaster such as a giant monster attack, tornado or earthquake. The early NES version we saw played a little different than the P.C. version, but it had all the same options. This is definitely one to check out, especially if you don't have the computer version. Although SimCity is completely different from games like Tetris and Dr. Mario, it has the same qualities that make people play it obsessively, and appeals even to those who don't usually enjoy video games."

The game was never addressed again [further research needed] until 15 years later, in a July 2005 issue of Nintendo Power:

"Digging through the desk drawers of NP managing editor Scott Pelland for rare games is akin to exploring an archaeological dig for dinosaur bones. Our latest expedition into the unknown uncovered Sim City[sic] for the NES. For a good long while, Nintendo had the publishing rights to the Sim City series, and developed a handful of games. What makes this one special is that it never saw the light of day. While far along in development, the game was, unfortunately, canceled[sic]. As you can see here, the ROM is nestled comfortable into a gold The Adventures of Link cartridge! This gem item is most likely one of a kind. -Andy M."

(Caption) "Sim City for the NES plays much like the original PC version, but there are some slight differences, most noticeably in the menus. The game was never released because of bad timing."
