Prey 2

Developers: Human Head Studios (2009-2012), Arkane Studios (2012-2014)
Platforms: Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Prey 2 was the intended sequel to 2006's Prey. Despite how promising the game looked from its trailers and presentations, it would inexpiably go unreleased.

Announced only a month after the release of the first game, it originally was planned as a direct sequel following Domasi "Tommy" Tawodi's defeat of the Sphere. In rather classic 3D Realms fashion, the game was announced far too early then what it was ready, as actual development of the title only started around 2009.

In June 2009, 3D Realms would transfer the IP over to Miller's Rader Group venture, before they then transferred it over to Bethesda Softworks parent ZeniMax Media in July. Alleged bad blood behind the scenes between Human Head and Bethesda would cause the developers to leave. After attempts to rescue the game, even with Dishonored developer Arkane Studios being brought in, the game was ultimately confirmed to be cancelled in October 2014.

Early Development (2006-2009)

The earliest indication of a sequel to Prey was as early as 1997. The E3 1998 trailer described Prey as "the first adventure in the saga of Talon Brave".[1]

A sequel to the Talon Brave version of Prey was not intended to be called "Prey 2". Former project lead Paul Schuytema stated in an interview with Voodoo Extreme that a hypothetical Prey game would likely have a new name with "A Talon Brave Game" as a subtitle.[2] In a .plan update from July 24th, 1998, Miller stated that 3D Realms would never publish a game with "sequel numbers" as a title, feeling that such titles were "uncreative and lame".[3]

Of course, due to that version getting scrapped, a sequel would go unrealized.

The words "Prey will continue ..." appear on screen.

Scott Miller would announce Prey 2 in an interview with Edge Magazine.[4]

1. I'm currently working on...

Prey 2, of course! We are addressing concerns about combat, as well as adding in more gameplay innovations.

Since Prey 2 is already under production, we asked Scott if we be seeing a long term series of Prey games:

Scott: That is always the goal. With Max Payne, for example, we always planned for a long series. I’m still puzzled to this day why – after 3D Realms and Remedy sold the IP to Take2 – there’s not been a Max Payne 3. That’s a franchise that sold over 7 million copies between two games. We should be hearing about Max 4 in development by now.

March 17th

Rader Group, a new brand management venture from Scott Miller, would announce three projects Earth No More, Incarnate and Prey 2.[6] [7] To date, Rader Group would not release a single game.

This Prey 2/Arkane rumor is giving new life to a lot of old lies. I’m been quiet about this whole business but can’t stay so anymore. I’ve worked at/with @humanheadgames for years, including different stages of Prey 2 development. I was narrative designer/writer on Prey 2 for the last six months of its development at Human Head. It was a lot more than a demo. Prey 2 was a full game. And a crazy fun one. The team was small but you wouldn’t have known it. What happened to Prey 2, from where I sat, was political. And petty. And potentially litigable. Human Head had a great game. I was heartbroken when Prey 2 went into limbo. Human Head deserved to have that game released. Frankly, they needed it. As for Arkane, I’ve enjoyed what I played of Dishonored. They have the chops. If the rumor is true, they’ll likely do well with Prey 2. But I mourn that Prey 2 won’t belong to Human Head. I mourn that my friends won’t get recognition for what they accomplished.
