War is an unlicensed shooter in which you throw knives and bombs at terrorists and Osama Bin Laden in the war-torn hellscapes of Earthworm Jim, Donkey Kong Country, and Final Fight 3.

ABAB Soft Screen

War ABABSoft.png

A screen where the ABAB Soft logo displays with the second stage's music playing can be found by changing RAM address $005F to $07. This appears to be a leftover from a multicart by them that contains War. The site does not exist anymore and can only be accessed through the Wayback Machine.

Unused Ending

On all known releases of War, beating the game causes it to fade out to a black screen and lock up. However, an ending does exist: at the title screen, change RAM address $005F to $0C.

Surprisingly, the CHR data bank for War from Super New Year Cart 15-in-1 has at least 36kb of unused data, which appears to be a different version of War but with the correct ending sequence code! This is a leftover from an actual 4-in-1 cart by ABAB Soft and has the fully functional menu inside, but since there is almost half of the original game missing it can't be played. If you use the first 5 banks of War, used in this multicart with some hacking (the system bank code is shifted), you can actually see the original menu from the 4-in-1 multicart, as well as the working ending screen!

Here is the fixed version fully working.

File: War_(Hummer_Team)_(Alt_ver,_Hidden_Menu_Ripped)-f1-.rar (42 KB) (info)

The reason why this is not working is because of the wrong main subroutine index setting. In the current version, the ABAB logo uses $005E=$00/$005F=$07, and the ending is put in the routines $005E=$00/$005F=$0C accordingly. In the unused working version, the $0C is used by the 4-in-1 menu. The real location of the ending is $005E=$03/$005F=$00, which is used by any version of this game to jump to the ending. But only in the unused leftover version of the code does the actual program exist. The other versions have no extra handlers there, so those just read garbage data and softlock.

Although this font is used for the HUD and ending, not all the characters seen here are used.

Unused Music

This game reused all of the tracks from Earthworm Jim 3 (including the unused Donkey Kong Country 4 tracks) with some added tracks. All of these unused tracks can be accessed by changing RAM address $0701 to one of the values listed below.

$20 & $2E - Butterfly by Smile.dk

A rendition of Butterfly can be found in the ROM. This was used in Finger DDR and may be related to another ABAB Soft game called Dance Y2k.

$22 - Unknown Noise Channel Track

An unusual track using only the noise channel. This also appears in Finger DDR, but it goes unused there as well. This was probably never intended to be used anywhere.

$2C - Super Mario World Fortress/Castle

This track from Hummer Team's Super Mario World appears again in the ROM and is still unused.

$2D - Donkey Kong Country 4 Aquatic Ambiance (Earthworm Jim 3 version)

Although this is used, only the first few seconds of it are heard until it gets cut off by the demo.

$2E - Super Mario World The End

Appears here again from Earthworm Jim 3 and is still unused.
