The Chinese PC port done by Joyoland has 43 previously removed test maps that can be added back to any version of the game. Many of them simply showcase NPCs or enemies, but there are some unique ones sprinkled in. For convenience, all maps featured on this page may be downloaded from the link above.

A neat thing about all of these maps is that they also come with the plaintext .arg files prior to being converted to their binary .arb counterparts, which allows us to see exactly how these maps are configured.

Most of these areas default to using Forest of Dawn as their music. Funnily enough, in the .arg files, it still refers to the BGM as アルタゴ平原(フィールド全般) ("Altago Plains (General Field)").

tes0000

YsMOC-tes0000.png

An extremely simple test map containing two rooms with basic geometry. While there is nothing to do here, the rooms at least have collision, but the geometry inside them do not.

tes11 Series

These are test maps for Beast Plains.

tes1100

YsMOC-tes1100.png

Contains enemies from Beast Plains. This map has a marker on mp_9999 with the title of "Enemy Test_Casnan". Heading through the north corridor takes you back to mp_9999.

tes1101

YsMOC-tes1101.png

More enemies from Beast Plains. This map was probably meant to be connected to tes1100 through one of the other corridors, but it doesn't have an entry file to accomplish this.

tes1102

An early version of the midsection of Beast Plain, specifically mp1102. It's fairly far along, but has a somewhat simpler environment, a few texture bugs, and a different assortment of enemies.

  • The layout is mostly the same until the end, as the spot where the campsite would be is not on a separate map.
  • The background of the Forest of Dawn also has different details, being foggier and having different trees, including some dead trees that aren't in the final version. It's also missing the stone monument.
  • The minimap is in a primitive state, being more jagged, lacking water & collectibles, and highlighting outside maps that it doesn't need to.
  • Despite its early form, it is indeed connected to the same maps as its final version.

tes12 Series

These maps primarily showcase NPCs from Casnan.

tes1200

Has many NPCs from Casnan playing out their talking animations. This map has a marker on mp_9999 with the title of "NPC Test_Casnan". Heading through the north corridor takes you back to mp_9999.

More interestingly, there is an earlier revision of Adol's model on this map!

tes1201

YsMOC-tes1201.png

More NPCs, plus a few objects.

tes1202

YsMOC-tes1202.png

A bunch of NPCs standing up and sitting in midair, not to mention Gruda standing off to the side.

tes1203

YsMOC-tes1203.png

An empty map that probably had some NPCs before.

tes1210

YsMOC-tes1210.png

The NPCs, except the two Eldeels, just walk in place. Nothing else to see here.

tes21 Series

These maps primarily showcase enemies from the Forest of Dawn.

tes2100

Has low-level enemies from the Forest of Dawn.

An alternate setup of this map exists in tes2100_.arg, which also has a .arb counterpart so it can be loaded in-game. While it only loads up a Bozowalla, its .arg file reveals that two deleted test enemies were also supposed to appear:

Enemy ID Japanese Name Translated
e9910 バンビット Bambit
e9912 フロウラ Flowra

tes2101

YsMOC-tes2101.png

Has higher-level enemies from the Forest of Dawn.

tes2110

YsMOC-tes2110.png

Contains Vandaroper from the "Resentful Spirit" quest.

tes2111

An earlier version of Forest of Dawn: East (mp2111) with a different assortment of enemies; mostly a ton of Blaybyes. From a visual standpoint, it is nearly identical to its final iteration.

  • It uses Beast Plains' music, Burning Sword.
  • There are no resources to collect materials from.
  • The Vargin enemies are missing from the water.
  • There's a spot you can inspect just in front of the northern exit, but nothing happens when you attempt to.
  • The northern exit warps to tes2112.
  • The other exits take you to the same maps as the final version.

tes2112

An earlier, empty version of the map that houses Foria-Daros.

This area looks mostly the same as its final version, but is missing enemies, objects and some plants.

  • It uses Beast Plains' music, just like tes2111.
  • Entering this map from tes2111 takes you straight to the area where that Foria-Daros would spawn.
    • Heading south from here takes you to the real map, mp2112.
  • By removing this map's entry file after saving in the map and reloading it, you can explore the rest of this area.
    • Adding the entry file back at this point will reveal that the southernmost exit functions, taking you back to mp2111 (Forest of Dawn: East).

tes22 Series

NPC test maps for Comodo Village.

tes2200

YsMOC-tes2200.png

Has a few NPCs from Comodo Village, plus Mishy and a couple swords.

tes2201

YsMOC-tes2201.png

This map is empty.

Its .arg file reveals that three test enemies used to spawn here, but the lines were commented out, and all three have been removed from the game's files.

There isn't much information about them apart from their names and IDs:

Enemy ID Japanese Name Translated
e000 五部グリーン1 Category 5 - Green 1
e001 五部グリーンⅡ Category 5 - Green II
e999 豚野郎 Pig Man

tes2202

Empty, just like tes2201. Its .arg file is set up the same way as tes2201, with the same three enemies commented out.

tes31 Series

These are primarily enemy test maps for the Algon River Basin and adjacent areas.

tes3100

YsMOC-tes3100.png

Has enemies from the Algon River Basin and a few other areas.

Heading through the north entrance leads back to mp_9999, suggesting that mp_9999 once had a marker for this map, or was available through the debug menu.

tes3101

YsMOC-tes3101.png

Mostly has enemies from the Underground Ruins.

tes3110

YsMOC-tes3110.png

Has two pools of water with different colors. The purple pool does not damage you, acting like normal water.

It's not possible to get across the gap leading to the exit, but it doesn't matter since this map lacks an entry file.

The minimap has a few inaccuracies, showing corridors on the east and west sides that don't exist, and water running through the entire right half.

tes32 Series

NPC test maps for Selray Village.

tes3200

YsMOC-tes3200.png

Has NPCs from Selray Village.

Heading through the north entrance leads back to mp_9999, suggesting that mp_9999 once had a marker for this map, or was available through the debug menu.

tes3201

YsMOC-tes3201.png

This map probably had NPCs in it before, but it's empty now.

tes3202

Empty, just like tes3201.

tes41 Series

These are primarily enemy test maps for Table Mountain and adjacent areas.

tes4100

YsMOC-tes4100.png

Enemies from Table Mountain are here. Heading through the north entrance leads back to mp_9999, suggesting that mp_9999 once had a marker for this map, or was available through the debug menu.

tes4101

YsMOC-tes4101.png

Contains enemies from the Tower of Providence.

tes4110

This map was most likely intended for testing the Gale Shoes' ability to run up steep ramps. ...Except you can just walk up the walls without them here.

  • There's water on the northeast side of the map. The minimap shows a village icon next to it.
  • The gemstone lacks collision.
  • At the top of the cliff, you can jump off the southern side of the map.
  • Due to the map lacking an entry file, neither of the two exits function.

tes42 Series

NPC test maps for Highland Town.

tes4200

YsMOC-tes4200.png

Has NPCs from Highland Town.

Heading through the north entrance leads back to mp_9999, suggesting that mp_9999 once had a marker for this map, or was available through the debug menu.

tes4201

YsMOC-tes4201.png

This map probably had NPCs in it before, but it's empty now.

tes4202

Empty, just like tes4201.

tes5x Series

Test maps for Danan Village and the Subterranean Forest.

tes5100

YsMOC-tes5100.png

Contains enemies from the Subterranean Forest.

tes5110

This map tests damaging terrain.

  • The orange pool on the southern side quickly drains health and poisons you.
  • The right red sector can sometimes induce a small amount of damage.
  • The left red sector will damage and poison you.
  • The northern pool of water is safe to swim in, and you can walk through the red sphere.

tes5200

YsMOC-tes5200.png

Has NPCs from Danan Village.

tes6x Series

tes6100

YsMOC-tes6100.png

Contains enemies from a variety of locations, including the Ashen Forest, Forest of Spores, and Colonia Battlefield.

tes6110

YsMOC-tes6110.png

The only enemies here are a Reppi and Pigbulb, which are from the Sacred Beasts' Nest.

tes6200

YsMOC-tes6200.png

Contains the Roos.

tes7100

Mostly has enemies from the Colonia Artifact Laboratory.

tes8100

YsMOC-tes8100.png

Houses enemies from Iris, World of Records.

tes91 Series

Miscellaneous test maps.

tes9100

This map features an opaque pool of water and a Galba-Muva. You can also stand on the edges of the wall that sit on top of the water.

tes9101

YsMOC-tes9101.png

Same as tes9100 with a Mesarabadi instead.

tes9102

An enlarged version of tes9100 with a checkered floor and a variety of enemies. It has a village icon on its minimap. You can no longer stand on the edges of the walls on top of the water, and instead pass through them.

tes9103

YsMOC-tes9103.png

Another enlarged variant of tes9100 with a different array of enemies. Like tes9102, it also has a village icon on its minimap.

tes9104

YsMOC-tes9104.png

Yet another enlarged version of tes9100, this time with only a Masked Warrior on it. Like the two maps before, it also has a village icon on its minimap.

testmap

An expanded version of the test map of the same name from Ys Seven, which would be further developed in Ys VIII.

It's mostly the same, but with a few new areas and objects, lighting and transparency effects, and water you can swim in.

  • Mishy is here. Speaking to him will open a menu meant to set the playtime for each character to 5 hours (for unlocking their respective trophies), but nothing appears to happen.
  • The toge1, 2 and 3 .it3 model files were copied over from Ys Seven's version of this map. These are the thorns that you can run through on the northeast side of the central area. They no longer have a sound effect for running through them, but they still crumble the same.
  • The incline on the left side of the central area now requires the Gale Shoes to run up it. The tiles in front of it no longer pull you closer to the incline.
  • The west-most room now contains a sphere to make it more clear where the camera revolves.
  • Heading up the southern ramp in the central area will send you to mp_9999, suggesting that mp_9999 once had a marker for this map, or was available through the debug menu.

A small oddity: The uncompiled .arg file that the map comes with is encoded in GB2312 (Simplified Chinese), despite all of its text showing up as Japanese afterward.

testmap2

YsMOC-testmap2model.png

Another test map model is inlcuded in the same folder as testmap, but never loaded. Attempting to load it in-game in place of testmap just makes you fall through the floor, which is strange because it does technically have a collision model.

  • This model appears to have originated from Ys vs. Sora no Kiseki, being one of two test maps left in the game.
    • While that game does have a functional .arb file available (found inside the archive \PSP_GAME\USRDIR\pack\map\testmap.mpp), it does not work as intended with Memories of Celceta, as you still fall through the floor, and the map will turn red.
  • An exact copy of this map model exists in Ys VIII as well, but even though it has its own .arg and .arb files, it instead loads an alternate setup of the standard testmap.

Its model can be converted to a standard .obj format for viewing by using it3cnv.
