Image Compressions

Please do not reupload images with minimal compression savings. For example 5KB of savings on a 300KB image costs more to the server than it saves. Thank you. -Ehm (talk) 16:50, 10 February 2017 (EST)

Compressing a PNG (see my userpage) does not lessens quality or colors, it just removes junk code. MM456Sig.png® 11:06, 11 February 2017 (EST)
That's not the point in question here. The point is, the amount of data saved is far less than the file size. This means that you're essentially doubling the amount of data stored on the server for a minimal cost in bandwidth. -Einstein95 (talk) 11:24, 11 February 2017 (EST)

Uploading images

Hi, I'd like to mention a few points regarding some images you have recently reuploaded.

  • Please don't reupload images just to make them a few kilobytes smaller. Our image guidelines state that you should not reupload images "unless the filesize reduction would be significant", and a difference of just a few kilobytes or less doesn't really meet this requirement. Keep in mind that old versions of images are still stored on the server, so uploading new versions of images causes them to take up more server space, not less.
  • Please do not attempt to redesign or modify template images (such as Media:Download.png) or template code without discussing it with an administrator first.

Thanks. --Devin (talk) 16:53, 10 February 2017 (EST)

I'd also like to point out converting from JPEG to PNG by merely saving the file as such is explicitly prohibited on this wiki. Not only is it not very useful for the purposes of this wiki, but it doesn't improve the quality at all and only serves to increase the file size as any details lost in the JPEG remain lost in the PNG. Judging by your Mario Wiki activity, you seem to be doing the same thing here. If you continue to needlessly compress images here, I won't be afraid to ban you. Thank you and please spend your time doing things other than mingling with images nonstop. --From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 17:22, 10 February 2017 (EST)
I know that converting JPEG to PNG does not only makes image higher quality, as some elements from the original JPEG are still present. MM456Sig.png® 17:38, 10 February 2017 (EST)
I think you might be getting a bit confused here. Converting a JPEG file to PNG does not improve quality. The PNG quality will be the exact same as the JPEG, but the PNG version will be a much larger file. The only proper way to do this is, for example, retaking a screenshot and saving as PNG in the first place. ---GerbilSoft (talk) 17:47, 10 February 2017 (EST)
I resised the image and now it's lossless. MM456Sig.png® 10:59, 11 February 2017 (EST)
Oh, and don't reupload images just because it's not 16:9. We prefer game screenshots to use native resolutions and, for the most part, aspect ratios. Please don't re-upload an image just because it's not in HD, especially if a game doesn't support it.--From: divingkataetheweirdo (talk) 18:10, 12 February 2017 (EST)

Template Edits

Please do not edit any wiki templates or related files. Thank you. -Ehm (talk) 11:44, 12 February 2017 (EST)

I have already asked you not to modify templates or their images without consulting an admin first. If you do this again you will be blocked from editing. --Devin (talk) 11:52, 12 February 2017 (EST)
Thanks. I want to create a Super Mario Kart proto article, but it was deleted 2 years ago. MM456Sig.png® 11:56, 12 February 2017 (EST)

PNG Monstrous

I noticed on your userpage that you use a program called PNG Monstrous for PNG compression. Please be advised that the program defaults in PNG Monstrous do not retain gamma information, and lose image quality very slightly. We have a guideline against this practice. See point #3 in this section for more information. -Ehm (talk) 11:50, 12 February 2017 (EST)
