Asheron's Call
Asheron's Call |
---|
Developer: Turbine Entertainment Software This game has unused areas. |
This game is defunct. Do note the game no longer works at all without modifications. This is most likely due to the game's servers being shut down. As a result, further official developments with the game are unlikely to happen. |
Asheron's Call was an MMORPG developed by Turbine Entertainment Software. It was one of the first big three MMORPGs on the market, but newer MMORPGS rapidly supplanted it. After more than 17 years of uptime, the game was unceremoniously shut down on January 31, 2017. Despite plans to make a patch so that players could create their own servers, no such patch was released and the game was shut down due to Turbine losing interest in MMORPGs.
Unused Spells
Turbine released a video of an experimental spell that was never finished, Ring of Drudges. It would cause multiple Drudge monsters to fly out of the caster and then attack nearby targets. The video can be seen here.
Groovy Portal Sending is another unused spell that can be found in the game files. It has impossible cast requirements (50,000 Mana cost, along with a required Item Magic skill of 2,000 to even have a 50% chance to cast) and has the description "Sends you on a magical, groove-filled trip....". Its function is unknown.
Bovine Intervention is another interesting unused spell. This one has more reasonable casting requirements, but is still unobtainable. It has the description "When Cow gods intervene....." and is an "Area of Effect" type spell. The only spell of this type usable by players is Avalanche. While the exact functionality is unknown, based on the behavior of both Avalanche and used monster-only Area of Effect spells we can likely infer that this spell causes cows to rain from the sky, damaging any target they land on.
Unused Areas
There is an inaccessible area of the Golem Sanctuary dungeon that can only be seen by viewing the dungeon's map data. This area forms a hidden developer message when viewed this way, being shaped like the words "STOP HACKING THE DATA".
At the end of the Beyond the Mines of Despair dungeon is a locked door that cannot be opened by any means. Using an exploit to force yourself through the door reveals a short hallway and another door. Behind the 2nd door is a wall, and in front of it is an invisible, untargetable portal that teleports you to the Obsidian Rim.
Unused Developer Messages
In the Portal.dat file for the March 2001 update, the text "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US" can be found. It isn't used for anything.
Unused Items
In the Portal.dat file for the March 2004 update, many items can be seen that were never made available to players and were likely added as a joke. This includes items such as Dyeable Saddles, Golden Healing Kits, Horses, Dyeable Capes, Winged horses, Dyeable Chainmail Bikinis, and a Raygun.
Nexus Koujia Armor was introduced during April 2000, as one of the three rewards for killing the Nexus Crystal, a once-per-server boss. However, no player on any server chose this reward, and thus it is unobtainable and never appeared ingame. It provides the same spells as the other rewards but has an Armor Level of 245.
