Bugs:Yume Nikki
This page details bugs of Yume Nikki.
This page or section needs more images. There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this. |
To do: Determine the location of the last bug described in Yumesyussei's changelog: On the new map, half of the screen may appear black. |
The original release of Yume Nikki version 0.10 contained several bugs that were addressed in a patch Kikiyama released titled Yumesyussei. The fixes contained in this patch were later rolled into version 0.10a.
Despite the existence of this patch, some bugs still managed to sneak into Yumesyussei, and by extension, v0.10a.
Please note that bugs present in v0.10a apply to the fan translations as well, as they are also based on v0.10 with the Yumesyussei patch applied.

Bugs Exclusive to the Unpatched Version 0.10
Teleport Maze Error
Kikiyama's description: There was a link mistake in a particular map, and an error occurred when moving to a location.
In the Teleport Maze at coordinates (179, 145), which is on the far right side of the map, one of the teleport tiles is misconfigured to send the player back to Dense Woods B in the room that connects to the Mall. This will cause the game to crash because the subsequent event that gets called is exclusive to the Teleport Maze, and nowhere to be found in Dense Woods B. The teleport tile is supposed to send to player to coordinates (65, 177), on the southwest side of the map.
This odd mistake was not present in earlier versions.
Mars Hill Clip
Kikiyama's description: It was possible to go through a part in a specific map that is not supposed to be normally passable, causing it to become inoperable if proceeding as is.
On Mars in the room before the hole that requires the Midget effect, it is possible to walk north through the upper portion of the hill. You can walk around inside and outside the hill like this, but if you go to the top of the hill to the next room, the game will softlock due to the event that handles diagonal movement being interrupted.
This can also be in the room that leads to the hill.
Incorrect Currency
Kikiyama's description: Currency was displayed as "G" instead of "円".
A simple error where RPG Maker's default currency, G, is displayed instead of 円 for Yen. Given the almost two-year span between version 0.09 and 0.10's release, it's possible that Kikiyama may have made a new project for version 0.10, which is how this error would have occurred.

Drop Effects Outside the Nexus
Kikiyama's description: Number key 5 worked in places other than the Door Room, potentially causing errors.
If you have an effect equipped prior to entering a door in the Nexus, you can drop the effect in that area. This can crash the game by creating an object with no associated graphics, or spawn an NPC from the area you are in. Since the game still believes that you dropped an effect, it can still be picked back up in the Nexus.
Sit on the Ground in Chairs
Kikiyama's description: Number key 1 could be used in the chairs.
If you press the 1 key to while Madotsuki is sitting in any chair, she will sit down on the ground normally. After pressing the 1 key again to get back up, access to the menu is enabled, which allows chair-related glitches to be executed, such as the speed glitch.
Note that for Madotsuki's desk chair, this only works after returning to the desk after riding around in it.
This bug was resolved in the Yumesyussei patch by preventing the 1 key from being pressed while in the chair, but for some reason, Kikiyama made it possible to open the menu while sitting in Madotsuki's desk chair instead.
No NASU Bonus
Kikiyama's description: The minigame bonus could not be scored under certain conditions.
There is a very specific condition when playing the regular mode of NASU where if you grab the red eggplant first, then the purple eggplant in the same jump, you will not score a bonus. 1010 bonus points (1000 from the bonus, and 10 from the purple eggplant) will instead be placed in variable 79, which was used for keeping track of the score in older versions, but is a blank variable in v0.10.
Kikiyama corrected this in Yumesyussei to add the bonus points to the current score, which is stored in variable 88 in v0.10.
Stuck at the Desk after Dropping from the Witch's Flight Event
To do: See if Madotsuki can actually become invisible from this bug. |
Kikiyama's description: After a special wake-up event, the protagonist may become invisible due to the sit-down action being caught, or become inoperable at the time of saving. For this, it was corrected so that operation will return to normal even if the loaded data had the issue.
When you dismount the broom during the Witch's Flight event, you wake up laying on the floor. In the unpatched v0.10, it is possible to press the 1 key while you are in this position, which will make the game think that Madotsuki is in a sitting state. If you don't press the 1 key again to make the game think that you got back up from sitting, and then go to save, Madotsuki will be stuck at the desk after exiting the save menu. This carries over when you reload the save file.
True to Kikyama's description, this was resolved in Yumesyussei by allowing normal operation in save files affected by the bug.
Footsteps when Riding a Broom
Kikiyama's description: The footstep sound is heard even if you float with a broom on a certain map.
If you equip the Witch effect and ride the broom in Face Carpet Plaza, the regular footsteps can be heard instead of the floating sound effect that is supposed to play when riding the broom.
Eye Palm Scroll Lock
Kikiyama's description: When you return to the Door Room using an effect in a specific place, the scrolling will remain fixed.
At the top of Mars, if you use the Cat effect to make the UFOs appear, then teleport back to the Nexus using the Eye Palm effect, the screen will not scroll when moving. This happens because the event that makes the UFOs appear is set to lock the camera, preventing any scrolling from happening.
Incorrect Display Priority of Tiles
Kikiyama's description: In a certain map, there are places where the display priority of map chips is incorrect.
In the room right before the Mall's roof, there are a couple tiles next to the escalator that can be walked behind.
Other Adjustments
These changes made in Yumesyuusei weren't necessarily bugs, but are smaller changes made to refine the game a bit.
Madotsuki's Experience
Madotsuki's Experience stat, despite having no practical use, received a massive buff in the unpatched v0.10. This is most likely a mistake from refactoring the game between v0.09 and v0.10, as this oddity was not in older versions. This was corrected in Yumesyuusei, though if you use a save file from the unpatched v0.10 on it, Madotsuki's current Experience will remain the same.

FC Dungeon Glitch Room
In v0.09 and the unpatched v0.10, the FC Dungeon Glitch Room is unlit, like the rest of the FC Dungeon. Yumesyuusei changed this to make this room lit up regardless of whether or not you have the Lamp effect equipped and toggled.
Bugs in Yumesyussei / Version 0.10a
Each of the issues above were resolved in the Yumesyussei patch, but there are still some other bugs present in the patched version.
Speed Glitch
A useful and well-known glitch present in both the original v0.10 and v0.10a that can multiply your speed. To execute it, follow these steps:
- Sit in the chair in Madotsuki's dream room.
- Open the menu with X.
- Equip the desired effect.
- Press down, then Z to exit the chair.
While this is normally used in conjunction with the Bicycle effect to achieve quadruple speed, it can also be used with any other effect to double your speed. Note that in the unpatched v0.10, you first need to execute the glitch that lets you sit on the ground in chairs.
Noclip Glitch
Another glitch involving Madotsuki's desk chair that disables most collision. It can be executed with these steps:
- Sit in the chair in Madotsuki's dream room
- Equip the Kitchen Knife or Umbrella effect.
- Press down, then Z to get off the chair.
- Quickly (while Madotsuki is moving) press 1 to switch hands with the knife, or twirl the umbrella.
This allows Madotsuki to walk through anything, but some loading zones will not trigger.
Footsteps when Riding a Broom
In both the unpatched v0.10 and v0.10a, the following areas have a bug where the normal footsteps can be heard when riding the broom with the Witch effect equipped:
- Number World, in the room before the Guillotine Room.
- Neon Tile Path B
- Pink Sea
This bug was caused during the refactoring that occurred between v0.09 and v0.10's release, which made the events that handle the floating sound on these maps unused. An explanation can be found here.
Invisible Red Eggplant
In both the unpatched v0.10 and v0.10a, when playing NASU, if you grab the red eggplant right as soon as a purple eggplant hits the ground, the red eggplants in the next game will be invisible. They can still be collected, and will become visible again after grabbing one.
Stuck lying down
If the 1 button is pressed then Madotsuki will sit down, and then eventually lay down after some time. However, if she does this during the cutscene that plays as Masada's ship is crashing, when it is done, Madotsuki will be stuck in this position.
Unused Kinoko-san colors
In both the unpatched v0.10 and v0.10a, the small Kinoko-san in the FC Demon's room will change its sprite to the unused variants when dragged with the Cat effect. The bug did not occur in earlier versions, and the other small Kinoko-san outside of the room is unaffected by this bug.
Bugs in the English Steam version
These bugs were introduced in the localization process of the English version on Steam, and were never resolved in the multitude of updates that were pushed out.
Spaceship screen dimming
The screen will not dim during three different events in the Spaceship: sleeping in the Spaceship's bed, the alarm during the Spaceship Crash event, and the fade in and out of the aforementioned event's cutscene. This is due to the pure-black picture used in such events being set as transparent.

Old effect names
Some effects were renamed in the January 22, 2018 Update, but it was not applied everywhere:
FC Menu | FC Menu (how it should be) | FC Menu (all effects) | FC Menu (all effects, how it should be) |
---|---|---|---|
Game Explanation | Tutorial | Game Explanation | Tutorial |
Midget | Midget | Miget | Midget |
Get Fat | Fatten | Get Fat | Fatten |
Flute | Flute | Whistle | Flute |
Severed Head | Severed Head | Talking Head | Severed Head |
Oni | Oni | Devil | Oni |
The Fatten, Flute, Severed Head and Oni effects are also called by their old name in The Nexus.
Menu Theme text
In the English Steam version, if you talk to the lunatic Toriningen in The Mall while using the Traffic Light effect with the light set to red, the text displayed will be completely broken. This is due to the fact that this line of text is displayed on another page of the event, which was not translated.
Missing Sound Effects
In the English Steam version, some sounds effects are missing, like the sound effects used when talking to an FC Pirori (000000000005.WAV and 000000000006.WAV) or the sound heard when flying with the Witch effect. This is due to these files being incorrectly renamed in the translation.
Lag
The Steam release of the game features prominent lag during sprite-scaling animations, such as when opening doors in the Nexus, saving the game, or viewing Monoko's full-screen event. Bizarrely, the easiest way to fix this is by simply replacing the RPG Maker 2003 runtime executable with that for EasyRPG.
