Captain Rainbow
Captain Rainbow |
---|
Developer: Skip Ltd. This game has unused areas. |
To do: Text for debug menus exists. Unused menu layouts with unused graphics also exist, some of which would be used in the Wii version of Chibi-Robo. |
Captain Rainbow is a rather odd Japan-only game based around an island populated by Nintendo's more obscure characters, many of whom hadn't had their games released outside Japan.
It's probably best known for a quest where Catherine/Birdo is in jail for going into the wrong bathroom and you prove that she's female by way of an unknown vibrating thing (displayed as a question mark), something which probably also had a hand in the game not getting an international release.
Unused Graphics
To do: \map\all\eyecatch_bg.brres is an old titlescreen intro that's animated. |
A placeholder item icon with "dummy" slapped onto it. There are 36 copies of this placeholder item icon, which can be found in \tpl\item.tpl.
Another placeholder image found in the subfolder \map\test\, present on all three test maps in the folder.
An early title screen and effect texture, which can be found in \tpl\title.tpl.
\map\all\eyecatch_bg.brres | \lyt\title.arc |
---|---|
An old and very patriotic logo design.
\map\all\eyecatch_bg.brres | \lyt\title.arc |
---|---|
An old design for Nick. The core design is mostly the same, but the colors are quite different.
\map\all\eyecatch_bg.brres | \lyt\title.arc |
---|---|
An old design for Captain Rainbow. His hand was changed to show off his yoyo, and the color palette was adjusted.
\tst\test.arc | \lyt\layout.arc |
---|---|
Old designs for the item sub-menu icon on the pause menu.
Unused Models
To do: \map\all\henshin_belt.brres may be unused, and if not, likely contains older textures for Nick. Unused models for Wallmaster and Rotohex, all with several animations. |
A fully animated model of Mach Rider, seemingly depicted as female (as seen in the ending of the arcade Mach Rider), is in the game, both on and off her motorcycle.
\tst\nik.brres | \chr\nik.brres |
---|---|
An old version of Nick's model. The design matches some old art left in the game, and there are some animations for this model that slightly differ from the final model, or are seemingly missing for the final model.
Six flat images used for animation testing. There is animation data that makes the top left image rotate in the three different axes. This model is located in \tst\all_animation.brres.
A simple "test home", located in \map\test\test_home.brres.

There are several debug rooms present in the game. Two of them, test.bin and sayoko.bin, are not referenced in the DOL and do not manage to load even by replacing other rooms. The others can be accessed with Gecko Codes. Rooms may not load correctly depending on how where they are accessed from. A jump to stage00 is in the global script and is recommended to be used to always load it correctly. For the others, it's recommended to load them from a new file replacing the intro cutscene room. These rooms are similar to the debug rooms in Chibi-Robo in that they are mostly named after developers, with a main room to warp to parts of the game by interacting with characters.

stage00.bin
The main debug room with warps to other parts of the game.
ahk.bin
22
Contains several objects for testing, including an unused cylinder and cube. The unused test square graphics and early Nick model are here as well. Strangely, Sophie's sound effect file from the GameCube version of Chibi-Robo seems to be referenced, but it isn't present on the disc.
junko.bin
23
Several characters are in a row here, including the unused Mach Rider, Rotohex, and Wallmaster. Interacting with a bench will change the camera angle.
sumida.bin
24
Contains several NPCs that can be made to walk forward or perform other actions, including Mach Rider.
fukuda
25
Contains some characters who perform various test routines. An early version of the intro cutscene is here. Mach Rider and their bike are here, with their own dialog. Mach Rider's dialog reveals they'd have had different voices for having their helmet on or off. Although they have two voice control codes, the voice samples themselves no longer exist. The bike also appears to have its own removed voice.
tony
26
A room with some NPCs, the windmill, and the police station. Hikari will move around when spoken to repeatedly.
stage31.bin
31
What remains of what seems to be an unused boxing minigame. Nick's boxing minigame model loads in front of a punching bag in an area that looks like Little Mac's training area, and nothing else happens.
