Starting in the mid-1970s, dedicated Electronic Chess computers were a popular way to play the legendary board game against an AI opponent. A great many of these devices were released by an assortment of manufacturers, running a wide variety of AI chess engines of varying strength... but they ultimately faded from popularity in the 1990s, as PCs became powerful enough to run popular chess engines themselves without any dedicated peripherals.
