Development:Pokémon Platinum/Sprites
This is a sub-page of Development:Pokémon Platinum.
Pokémon Sprites
With the full source code leaked, every last revision to all the Pokemon sprites are now available to us. Every single full scratchpad is also available, so the complete creative process can be viewed for each and every single Pokemon. And unlike the Diamond and Pearl pads from the same repository, these ones are, at the very least, finalized, while some already have some Platinum work done on them in their very first commit. The Pokemon sprites can be found at pl_data/graphic/pokegra in the repository.
Gen 1 Pads The original members of the Pokemon Crew. |
Gen 2 Pads It's a whole new set of pa---ds~! |
Gen 3 Pads Thankfully, there's no water in any of these. |
Gen 4 Pads Everyone is (now) here! |
Menu Sprites
The Pokemon to get new forms in this game, Rotom, Shaymin, and Giratina, all got their own menu sprites at the same point in development, however, Shaymin's sky form never received a revision. Below are the revisions for the remaining Pokemon. The menu icons can be found at pl_conv/pokeicon/graphic in the repository.
Trainer Sprites
The vast majority of trainer battle sprites remained the same in Platinum, carrying directly over from Diamond and Pearl. However, some got changes, and some new faces were added, such as the Maid, Frontier Brains, and the partner trainer battles. The partner trainer battle sprites use early and unused trainer sprites leftover in Diamond and Pearl because they were seemingly initially planned for those games before being fully implemented in Platinum. The trainer battle sprites can be found at pl_data/graphic/trgra in the repository.
Back Sprites
Front Sprites
Overworld Sprites
Overworld sprites can be found at pl_data/graphic/fieldobj/obj_nitro in the repository for the scratchpads, and pokemon_pl/src/data/rsc for the IMD files.
Player
Both Lucas and Dawn had a couple revisions done to their overworld sprites, however, Dawn's only literal change (with one exception) is that most of her frames were shifted over by a single pixel due to not being centered. Lucas, on the other hand, has a little bit more to his revisions. Note that none of these changes appeared in any scratchpad, and can only be found in the IMD files.

He originally had the new outfit for Platinum, but his hat still had the red colors from Diamond and Pearl. Some detail on the top of his hat in many sprites was also changed a bit.

Lucas was originally going to swap out his black tuxedo for a white one in Platinum for the Super Contests. Middle revision shifts front and back frames over a pixel, and there's also a minor palette change to adjust the reds to the duller Platinum ones. In the end, this design change was reverted and he used his black tuxedo again for this game.

This is the exception in the revisions to the Dawn sprites. Her contest outfit was originally going to swap the pink colors to yellow, but again, like Lucas's outfit, this design change was ultimately reverted. Do note that this design was introduced in r6397, but the only difference between it and r8604 is the 1-pixel shift adjustments that aren't really worth showing.

Includes an earlier design of him with different hair and outfit. Also included in his palette file are colors that give him blue hair, which seem to match up best with his early sprites. Indeed, this early blue design was used in a revision committed to the IMD files but not the scratchpads. The date for the blue hair design is December 8 2007 in r4813, while the final design appeared in the IMDs about a week later, on December 16 2007 in r5089. The scratchpad wasn't committed to the repository until January 2008.

Scratchpads include some sprites of Mars and Candice. Early versions have slightly different hair compared to final, and what seems to be an open chest(by 1 pixel), which was changed to be closed, probably to match her artwork and for the outfit to make sense. The dates on the scratchpads are actually much later than when they were first committed to the IMD files. While the earliest version is from r5090, the first scratchpad's sprites are dated just a few hours later on the next day, December 17 2007, r5093. The final's sprites were added to the IMD files at the same time as the scratchpad, one revision before it. As for the earliest design, only found in the IMD files, there's very slight shading differences on her face for her front-facing and sideways sprites.
Darach
Includes several sprites of him with an earlier design, featuring different hair and nothing in his right hand. This early design did not appear in any IMD file commit.

Started out with red hair, a design of which was only committed to the IMD files. The earlier purple-haired design was committed to the IMDs on December 17 2007, at r5093. Between this revision and the final, the colors on her shades were changed slightly. There's some early sprites of her at the bottom of both scratchpads that show her with slightly different hair. The final's sprites were added to the IMD files at the same time as the scratchpad, one revision before it.

Started out with a slightly different hair color, the same as Bertha's. Contains several sprites of her, too, suggesting he was built off of her. Early version has slightly different detail on his lab coat. The very first version of him wasn't committed in any scratchpads, instead appearing only in the IMD files. First scratchpad version was committed to the IMDs in r5093, dated December 17 2008. The final's sprites were added to the IMD files at the same time as the scratchpad, one revision before it.

NPCs used in Wifi-related things went through a few revisions. The female only received a palette update, but for some reason, the male one became a pink clown before changing back a couple days later. ...Strange.

All of the Battle Frontier staff members originally had a very different design, being a girl with a pony tail that appears in multiple colors. It's...not 100% known if these were intended solely for the Battle Frontier staff, as other new characters introduced in this game, such as Looker, the Frontier Brains, and the Game Freak Director, used this character as placeholder. However, the yellow Battle Frontier staff member is the only character during development to use the yellow version of the character, so they are compared here. This early design can only be found in the IMD files. Even the scratchpads for the staff members don't have this early character present anywhere, not does it appear in any other scratchpad in the repository.

An unused scratchpad of Rotom exists that was committed in the same revision as the used one (r8243). The unused one only has three frames, which are arranged vertically, while the used one has all frames with them arranged properly.

Each of the interactable machines accessible with the Secret Key item originally were fully animated versions of each of Rotom's forms. It's unknown how these early sprites would've worked, given what they were replaced by. As a footnote, a single early revision of Wash Rotom appeared in the IMD files but not the scratchpads from r6503, dated January 23 2008. However, it differs only from the scratchpad r6303 version in some very minor details on its sideways-facing sprites:
Giratina
The first version of Giratina's Origin Form overworld sprites were committed in r4717 dated December 5 2007. The green background is indeed part of the sprites. The sprites were finalized five days later, in r4827 on December 10.
The scratchpad for Giratina's origin form, committed in r6303 in January 2008, has a few extra goodies laying around the used sprites.
